About All In The Family:
One of the most acclaimed comedy series of all time, All in the Family with Archie Bunker as the irascible, highly opinionated, working-class family man who viewed the world on his terms and his terms only. When not arguing with his liberal son-in-law, "Meathead," Archie took refuge in his long-suffering wife, Edith, who tries her best to understand Archie's conservative ways and outdated beliefs.

What makes this scene even sadder is that Archie's brother is dying of cancer, and sought Archie out to make amends with him before he died. Archie found out that his brother is dying, but chose not to tell him he knew, because he knew that his brother didn't want him to know. That makes this scene ten times sadder when you know that.

@@kathyk2777 Was that her way of saying you were book smart, but had no common sense? How do we define intelligence? Who is the smarter one? The person who got decent grades in high school who retired early, or the class valedictorian who works, and retires at 65? I thought my father was the same way. He never rewarded his kids when they did good. But he would be quick to punish if we did bad. Makes no sense right? But you do not have the time to dwell on that, you can only move ahead with your own choices, and reflect on them until another decision becomes imminent. You always find the daddy's little girl's syndrome locking horns with the mother. Strange is it not? Ever see the movie The Graduate? All that intelligence being thrown down the chute. Potential being wasted, and the parents were worried! Was she getting you off your a## when scolding you? It sounds like it. How did she treat other siblings if any? The same? Your father? The same? If she did so, she had the issues, and not you! Apologies if I am too invasive. Others who you worked with would think otherwise. Everybody does stupid things at home, lol! I know I have! Your mom had a short patience streak it seemed. My dad was he same. He had little patience, and a short temper. You must have been more like you dad. Cool, calm, and collected.

Yes ! Archie was a product of his environment. The episode "Two's a Crowd" illustrates this perfectly. Mike gets some insight into Archie's mindset as he talks about growing up during the depression, being poor, bullied and abused by his father (whom he idolized) EDIT I don't remember the episode name but there's a wonderful scene where Edith tells Mike that Archie yells at him because he's jealous. This is why Archie hates Mike. It’s not just the politics. He sees in Mike all the opportunities that he never got. I can relate. I wasn’t allowed to go to school until I was 16. My dad quit work and forced my mom back into nursing so he could stay home and teach religious studies to me. He didn’t care about academics if I didn’t buy in to his religious beliefs.

STILL the best show to come out of the 1970's. This should should be required watching at ANY acting or film school. THIS is how you do television. Still, for being 50 years old (or almost) the picture quality looks good. All In The Family is a perfect candidate for a HD remaster. Imagine what could be done with that film stock that they used back then. Though the "nostalgic" look is part of the charm of the show, I would love to see the entire series in 4k HD one day.

Archie is like that though to a degree, in his past he learned that that's how one lived by the people who influenced him, His father abused, degraded him and exposed him to the disrespect of minorities and Archie didn't know any better to the point he was bullied by minorities because of it. The thing about Archie is though, while at times he's stuck in the past he's willing to break bread and have a good time with minorities despite the way he talks and sees them which means he has an open mind, he struggles at times but through the series he grows and while he doesn't come out squeaky clean... He's still a better man for it. In one episode he claims to have said the N word in the past, in a future episode he punches his Lodge leader buddy for using it. If that's not character growth... Idk what is.

Sorry. I have to disagree. You should look into narcissistic parenting and how they create roles for their children (specifically the golden child and the scapegoat). I don’t think he favored Archie’s brother because he needed help - he favored him because he saw all the good things he liked about himself in him. With Archie, he saw the negative and rejected him. I think Archie became strong because of this mistreatment, rather than the other way around.

When I look at this scene now I tear up a bit. In some ways I’m like Archie-when it comes to relationships, keeping things the way they should be, mixing up views into insanity just to fit and calm my psyche. Never knew some of these things came from my father and brother. But Unlike Archie, I can’t half fix things with my father or brother. Both of them died when I was young(er), and oddly they too died at young ages…brother; age 22; car accident. Father; age 66; cancer. I know life isn’t a sitcom but many people get the opportunity to fix things with at least 1 family member before they die. Now I’m 40, alone, trying to fix myself and my life overall into something better. Therapists aren’t helping because they don’t buy the “you grew up misunderstood.” That maybe you have a right to play a “partial victim”, that it’s “not completely your fault”. This is why I smile and say thank you to many of the comments below. Just from your responses to this clip I know there are people who believe and think like me, that I’m not alone. Maybe people really can be “partial victims” love you guys.
