I really like the idea of getting the most out of a small place. It's easy to make tons of content in a big house where you can stretch all the way, but having a decent small space is way harder. However, this type of content is so much more relevant to a lot of people. Thanks Daniel

I always feel that people can live quite well in small spaces. There's always such a push for bigger/larger but in reality, thoughtful design and creative solutions can get you the same (if not better) outcome.

So, heres the thing. Kids do not know anything but what they have. If their lives starts in a small place, they adapt. Its most likely on the parents and what they want to achieve in life and what they want for their family. It is quite stressful to live in a small apartment as Daniel's with a kid and in the future two (CONGRATS ON THAT BY THE WAY. I had goosebumps!

I think a happy medium is best. We don’t all need to live in mansions, but many Western countries also have a bit of a housing crisis at the moment. A tiny house or a studio flat are great solutions for some people and some life situations, but not for others. There is a risk of glorifying the small space lifestyle. Many developers sell “luxury apartments” that are just a normal size. I always wonder when having two or three bedrooms and enough space for a family became a luxury. Of course it’s good to walk through life with an attitude of gratitude, but working people need to be able to afford a family home. Some people might live in small homes out of choice, but many do out of necessity.

I usually love your work. However, this video confuses me. Why didn’t you just move your desk into the living room? That way, you could integrate work and play instead of work and sleep? It would also save you from having to pack up your bed every morning.
@hanibee22
@hanibee22 Год назад
Commonly unused space during the day is our bedroom varied by people of course 😂 Me personally I made my bed most of the morning and I don’t sleep during the day but I do take a nap, though its pretty unusual. I also have my office setup in my bedroom as it gives me privacy and serenity from outdoor chaos from sharing the space with family members. During the day when I need a break I’ll go out to the living room and have lunch and chit chat with family members before going back to my office aka bedroom. On the evening when I no longer use the office, then I use my bed for sleep at night. So from my perspective I see the valid reasons why Daniel made the changes 😉

I do not like. I would make the desk "folding" against the wall. The monitor does not need to be placed on a desk. It can be hung on the wall /as TVs are hung/. The computer itself does not need to be placed on the desk either. Subwoofers are also superfluous. The chair may be foldable. In reality, you and your wife are sleeping UNDER THE DESK right now. Terrible and unnecessary. Your daughter's room is like a junkyard. Terrace of the children's room is DANGEROUS. You had to switch the places of your bedroom and the children's room. It is not a good idea to fold and unfold the bed. Imagine a situation where one of you and my wife is sick... Your desk should have been foldable, not the bed!
@QWEEKEN73

I’m with you on preferring smaller spaces. I live in a studio. I find satisfaction in knowing that every sq ft serves a purpose, though trade offs are to be made in order to maintain all the functionality that you need. I previously had my office situated in my living area, which was nice because I had the room to intentionally build out the office I really wanted. Then I bought a couch, and now my desk is in my kitchen lol. Over all it works out much better this way!
@lydiahonchiri2649
@lydiahonchiri2649 Год назад
Same here. I actually moved from a one bedroom to a studio 3 months ago. I find it comforting too. Knowing where everything is, and how easy it is to clean, makes me more relaxed. I hate clutter and it stresses me out. I also work from home, and organising a studio is like playing Tetris lol. Wanna swap pics of our studios? 😅. I'm always curious how everyone organises theirs lol.

So much love for this channel and this particular challenge, Daniel. I've just moved out of my first home of 12 years, which was a 19th-century terraced cottage in southeast UK. The struggle for space and storage was ever-present, but it was a great challenge to have, and I actually really enjoyed finding clever ways to maximise and 'unlock' space whilst minimising our living at/working from home footprint.

I think they should have kept things as they were. It's okay to surrender your living room to very young children as they need to be watched, just limit (and rotate) if need be the number of toys they have access to play with. Moving around the cot is genius. If they're having another baby, I'd say keep this apartment till the eldest is around 6. I shared a room with 2 siblings and slept in a fold out bed till I was 6 or7 and loved it so much I was distraught when I got my own room.

I admire your problem solving abilities and how you continually adapt to new challenges. The place needs a little bit more of a woman’s touch I feel. Apart form the toys in one room it’s hard to tell that a women and kid live in the apartment. The space feels more like an office overall. Its not the size, I live small with kids… its more the color palette and lack of cozy elements in the space. I am aware of minimalism esthetic you are going for, but I think a little color and some fabrics don’t take a lot of space. Otherwise great channel 😊👍 Me an my kids live in a small home as well. 3 kids no less. We have to be fairly minimal but I have chosen to create a more womb like environment in our space after decorating in a super minimalistic style for a while… actually with similar color palette as is in your space. And boy let me tell you… this sort interior just feels so good I am never going back. We are still fairly minimal… it just colors are very different and there are more cozy elements added in✌️ I am glad you are making videos though… very useful 😊

We basically reorganize sth every 6 months. Just now, when my kids are 5 and 7 i feel like we can settle down for a bit. We would love to get a bigger apartment, give our boys separate rooms but prices are horrendous. So for now we choose great neighbourhood over living space

Love how you three are making your small space work and how that inspires others to think of what might be possible. We have four living in an older condo ~1050sqft, that is hard to do; but we did have enough space to give the kids separate bedrooms by utilizing part of the large living room, some IKEA Pax cabinets and ingenuity. As to the possible punchline at the end of the video, only you can tell us if that was a good old British gag-line setup or not😊

As a person who had bedroom and home office more than 12 years, I really cant stand having work area in bedroom. My GF needs to sleep while I can work at night. ANd the worst part of having setup and bedroom in one room is dust. Dust cleaning in bedroom/office needs to be done at least once per day.

Makes me giggle seeing another minimalist with Bluey toys as it is exactly the same in my house with my two year old. I don't have all the luxury that you have and we live together in a 450ft one bedroom flat with a garden and shed. We will be sharing a room together for a very long time and so we got the Ikea single with storage and mattress underneath and put a bed length bed guard up to stop him or myself falling out of bed when he inevitably sleeps the wrong way round. I am really considering what life will look like later and deeply considering a coffee to dinning table like you had and installing a Murphy bed for the living room down the line so that he can have the bedroom as completely his. Then it would become a choice of toys in his room and my clothes in the living room, or leaving my clothes in his room and leaving toys in the living room or keeping both his toys and clothes and my clothes in the bedroom. So many choices, made more complex by living in smaller spaces. What would anyone else do?

Since COVID I've been working from home, I have a company furnished Dell 5820 that puts out a massive amount of heat - even with a ceiling fan it pushes the temperature of the room to over 80°F / 27°C, even in December. Hi Daniel, thank you for inspiration for living in small spaces! I have a question- could you share, where do you keep the big mattress for king size bed, when the bed is folded? I have beedn wandering about a similar solution for my family bedroom, but I cannot figure out a good way to store the mattress :/

Really shows that kids make stuff a lot difficult, huh? I can never see myself having kids, certainly not while living a minimalist lifestyle. Thankfully, I don't have to worry about that because I'm never having them.

So which specific model of computer do you use? You mention computer visualization, but what about your architectural design software? What do you use for that, and do you think it will run something like Chief Architect?

Hmmm, I think creating a wall of sorts around your desk is the answer. So you don’t see it at night. Also where’s the artwork? Wall decor? Nightstands? Pretty things? Rugs?
