Really great movie and I love your breakdown. However, here's another for you guys. He attempted to sign he and his wife up for the program but she denies. He does it alone or its mandatory for employees. The accident happens, killing him and the company has lost out on his skills. His consciousness is place in this box which is also a simulated environment the company can monitor. A company employee is assigned to him as a handler and can call him just like his wife can. Every time he's side tracked she calls him to get him back on task. Which is why she's so annoyed when he wants to go to the bar. Its futile. At the end they know they are losing him so she calls and they simulate the helicopters to push/panic him just enough to finish his work before he expires. The company benefits from his skills anyway. Watch it again and see how she pushes him through out the movie.

You know the whole idea of him being used by arm is not a bad one. It makes a lot of sense. It would explain Rhonda Mitra character a lot. And explain why he’s even there, so it’s a great theory.

I thought the exact same thing and then I read your comment and now I know I'm on track for something. I don't think he works for nothing. This company is not able to do anything more than put the consciousness in a box and let the families call and talk to the deciesed one for some time but this guy just developed a way to transfer that consciousness into a walking, living, robot. He was definently pushed to finish the project imo

The "Base" is his body dying. He's constantly fixing things, delaying his death. The time he has left is spent trying to make a physical copy of Jules in his world. Technically you could say there are 5 jules'. The one in the box, J1, J2, J3 and when he overwrites her. Maybe the 5 stages of grief? When he hears the sound of his daughters voice he finally accepts the fact that he's dead? If what is said is true in the movie and somnolence truly makes the person unreachable for a long while. That means that when he missed the calls, she was actually calling him. But he wasn't picking up. The machine also signifies this by actually showing it on the display. The final call is just being forced because they have to shut him down I guess? So the people coming to the door are I guess "Simulated by the company" to make him have his final call maybe? The Wolf was strange. In Native American Culture the spirit animal of the Coyote is a jokester. One who Reveals the truth behind illusion and chaos. So he's living an illusion and the coyote is there to lift the curtain.(Though the tail is mysteriously thin for a coyote, the fur matches and the face). I still think they meant to show a coyote in this instance. Since they don't appear in Japan, this is very strange indeed. Either that or the extinct wolf species of Japan of which there are 2. The names are hard and I don't know any cultural significance to them. My gut says coyote... The second animal that appears quite prominently is the goldfish. Which signifies fortune and "Being blessed with children". The constant showing of the animal well... By the end of the movie we know. I also keep coming back to the 3 tiny plastic robots. The one that J2 finds near the waterfall... I don't know what it means. You see the robot again when in the final scene "The real jules" is handed a final folder. She's also holding the robot in the car before the crash. Was it a gift? The woman with the umbrella is also confusing to me. In the house you can see her portrait change. From smiling, to leaving. In the club you can see video of her taking a pill. Matrix reference? I have so much questions that I would love to speak to Gavin Rothery about. But I'm afraid I'll become depressed after speaking with him.

The sad thing is, the Archive company literally fooled George with that whole scenario of his wife dying to motivate him to further his work, all to benefit the company; that's why the movie ended as soon as he succesfully implanted his wife's consciousness in the AI. Remember when the fake archive company reps came into George's residence and said something about 2 years, and having her for that long before solomnence? In a flashback conversation with his living wife, it was described as 200 hours of interaction instead of years. Also, when J3 asked how long the fabrication of her legs would take, George said days, when he has been spending all these years developing to get to model J3. This may point to him being aware of time dilation but not being 100% aware. The fake guys discovered the security seal was tampered with. This may be the archive company breaching the unit to read his work and memories, instead of him breaching it to read his wife's memories. Another example of them breaching his mind is the multiple armored doors being broken into in the end of the movie. When they found J2's body in the lake, the helicopters came in shortly after. I think this was the company finding signs in his consciousness that his contract "deliverable" was close to ready. They totally put him in the archive to fulfill his contract, which was ultimately just using him as labor and downloading his work afterwards. This may also explain why J3 did not want him to answer the final call, since J3 saw the outside world during the final download and realized that he was in the box.
@gaila.9852
@gaila.9852 2 года назад
J3 didn’t want George to answer because she wanted him to choose her over Jules.
@SlyBeast

I didn't think George's death was up for debate by the end of the movie. I gather that his consciousness, preserved in the archive, continued on as if nothing ever happened but was slightly tweaked by the Archive company so that he would believe his wife was dead instead of himself. It seems like this is a necessary step in order to avoid somnolence - the consciousness of the deceased, in order to be accessible to the living via the black box, has to believe it's still alive. Once his consciousness (or soul?) realized its body was dead, it moved on. Clever movie, exceeded expectations.
@MovieEmporium

I think it's what he was doing, and why he was there which is debatable. I always figured it was coping mechanisms was the reason he was building robots, but I like the idea of him being used. It stills has debatable issues.

This is the comment I was looking for and like Movie Emporium said 'coping mechanisms' it sure brings the pieces together and the involvement of Archive company on his consciousness!
@SlyBeast
@SlyBeast 4 года назад
@@MovieEmporium See, I took his actions as a logical response to his consciousness after the death of his wife been introduced to it (which it was). A guy with his skill set and resources loses his wife, has a "backup copy" of her, so he tries to bring her back in some form. It's like he was continuing to exist and do what came natural until the realization occurred that HE was the archive, not his wife. Maybe in that world, that's how the Archive company is able to maintain the consciousness of a person that has passed - by fooling it into thinking its body is still alive. Great stuff.

I could also definitely agree on this as they had no problem turning his memory into digital data "AI" and then he magnified that by in theory bringing his wife into this reality also. AI now learns way faster than any human could possibly think of... A bit scary when you think about it actually. I would assume the box is how the company is containing the AI until they feel it has reached the point of adulthood and acts just like a human would "AI experimentation" . Another noticeable is that Ai traditionally always wants to improve itself. this is especially true in this case as J02 flat out says "I want to be better" and even more with j03 as she completely understands what is going on by telling him not to pick up the phone and pretending she is the wife. Funny thing is the only AI that is not improving is his lol , even though he is the engineer in the movie the company limits his understanding of the world that has been created for him. One thing not mentioned here is as we all know the company inevitably wants a weapon, this is a given. At the very end though His AI now also completely understands what is going on. I think this is why the Company sets a predetermined time of expiration knowing that at some point the AI will become fully aware. Here's the kicker, all him and her have to do is upload themselves to the mainframe prior to the actual termination which we never actually see happen. We only given the illusion of this happening.. good starting point for a sequel.

My opinion: after the car crash, the company kept his consciousness so he can finish the work. All this time he was trying so much because he loved her. He would not accept J1 or J2 because he only wants her. The power of love. He is very cold to J2 which will comit suicide. When he finally creates final J, the company breaches in to get the information and he is shutdown. Read on the terminal: archive depleted. He opens the security box and gets his last call. This way finds out he was the dead one. This movie is about the power of love.

Your interpretation was excellent, along with everyone else's alternate explanations. Lots of food for thought regarding Archive. I'm not as astute as others with sci-fi films, but I watched this, and it wasn't until that shock ending that it made sense...so I watched it again after a few days with clearer eyes. One thing that bothered me about George was that, while he babied J1 -- J1 being more child-like -- how he treated J2 sometimes was upsetting. Yes, she was, at times, a petulant "teen," but he was often short with her. (Not that I blame him, I've got two teens myself.) The one part that continues to stick with me is the dog/wolf that got into the house. I thought he would try to befriend it, being alone with only robots to live with; fast forward to when he was testing J3 for empathy: "You can tell a lot about a person by the way they interact with animals." Although he loved his wife very much and was guilt-ridden by the accident, do you think that was a bit of a hint about his personality that wasn't outright shown? A certain amount of coldness in him? Maybe that's why he treated J2 the way he did at times? Just wondering what your think. The wolf was never explained, as someone mentioned, but I suppose a lot of things that weren't explained were made to make us think a little more, about technology, A.I., our humanity. P.S. Great review and explanation!
@MovieEmporium
@MovieEmporium 4 года назад
I honestly think the wolf was one of two things, a symbolism for something maybe his hungry attempt to keep building, maybe it was a defense mechanism to keep him home. I’d be interested to see what the director says. Actually you make an excellent point about J2, I think when kids grow up they become more annoying or more rebellious, they want things, to be loved but space, and your absolutely right George was cold with almost everyone. It also could be a play on kids being affected by the pressures of the better thing, feeing lost or helpless, maybe the suicide of the robot can be interrupted to the loss that kids feel today or the hopelessness of the feeling rejected by mankind. Or his own creator. J3 honestly is I think when he becomes truly kinda free to start accepting but your right it could mean a multitude of ways. Awesome response and thanks for watching the video.

@@MovieEmporium I also feel the movie puts the idea of how do we deal with AI from an ethical point of view . There is a huge question in the scientific community ( same thing about cloning ) : if we give an AI human like conscience and feelings, would it be considered a human ? therefore , should it enjoy human rights ? would it be unethical and unhuman to treat it like a thing , yet give it human feelings ? would it feel sadness , hurt , excitement ,and should we go that far ? it's a question that always intrigued me

@@safaaharrouni195 we can't really answer to that because our interpretation of AI is way far from what the films show us. Regarding the subject matter - there's the theme of not being able to distinguish delusion or simulation from reality which is also found in 'Total Recall', but I think that there's also a theme running through the film about the moral dilemmas we face if we are able to build artificial intelligences that are truly sentient and emotional. If you believe that such AI's would deserve similar rights to human beings then George fails completely - J2 behaves like a teenage girl who becomes increasingly more troubled and depressed throughout the film, eventually resorting to suicide. Even though she is based on Julie, George is more a father figure than a husband to her, and she looks to him for emotional support, yet he totally fails to recognise her distress at her feeling that his new love is displacing her, and in fact adds to it by taking her legs for J3. He behaves more affectionately toward J1, but still falls far short of the care due to a human child, leaving her to watch cartoons all day rather than finding more stimulating activities to do with her, failing to build her any arms and leaving her in the care of J2 who lets her go out in the rain. If they were a human family, George would have been jailed for child abuse and neglect, yet because they are robots, somehow it is acceptable to him. And then there is his "murder" of J3, who is in love with him, by over-writing her with Julie from the archive. All in all, he "uses" the robots, rather than respecting them as sentient beings (though it is explained to some extent by his guilt at Julie's death and desperation to bring her back before her archive expires). This makes the denouement of the film all the more appropriate thematically, since it is suddenly revealed that he himself is the one who exists totally at the whim of other people, he is the consciousness in a box with no control over whether he lives or dies. In a sense, it's his karma, he gets the same treatment that he gave to his robots. However, in a happier sense, it's a time of absolution as he realises that none of the things that he thought that he had done ever actually happened, and that he can let go of the guilt for Julie's death and that of his child who never in fact died. That moment feels a bit like waking from a dream in which one has done something terrible, some crime, to discover that one has not. All in all, I think that it is a very clever and thought-provoking film.

On my next viewing I realized why I felt that way, basically that what he was doing in the base amount to nothing really. The creation of the J robot didn't have a parallel to what was happening in the real world, nor did it signify anything other than what the plot show, that he was going to attempt to bring his wife's mind back in a robot body. I think Melvin and Sinclair was trying to patch his simulated memories and failed. He wasn't exactly an artificial intelligent human but rather a simulation of a dead person's memory and ended up become a virus (consciousness) which he later created 3 other viruses J1/2/3. That's why the Risk assessor evaluated him and saw him as a risk, hence why opening the box locks him in, like an antivirus quarantining a virus. I'm going to assume that the Archive is not only him but a bunch of simulated memories of the dead and he's just one of the memory in the archive (why they needed a direct line to his program) misbehaving and need to be deleted. J1/2/3 is just a way of showing his level of growth from being just a simulated memory to becoming fully conscious.

Got analysis on how each robot represented the levels of emotional growth he went through. Also what if he was trying to save a version of his wife to stay with him after he lost the connection on the dead side? Maybe he found out he was dead and did like a reverse black box for his side??? Did she really hear a woman voice on the phone?? “Who was that woman?”” How could she (his wife) speak to the robot while he was gone unless he really was building it to preserve a copy of his wife on the dead side.” He was a super engineer. Would love to hear what you think.
@MovieEmporium

I was thinking maybe the woman is similar to the Tom Cruise film Oblivion and part of an AI program or something. Honestly the whole idea of what the robots are truly for is an interesting discussion, I like what your thinking though with maybe hes trying to build a counterpart for his wife. It leaves it open for interpertation on the ethics of this whole concept. Great theory though.

I think it was stupid. How come she didnt let Him know that he is the one who got killed. From his point of view. He is the one alived and from his understanding they put her into archive.... So by 2038 you can let your love ones know what happened if they died.. and you can communicate to them for a short period. That was kinda mean if you ask me since her wife didnt let her know. Or maybe she did and he was just hallucinating the whole thing.. in any case the movie did NOT give us a clear picture and just reversed the ending. No it was not a good movie.. The idea sucks. No. Its not a masterpiece. The story was only there to incite emotions. Plot was a total BS.

The producers did a great job (indirectly) forcing the audience to ponder many of the "interesting/troubling" issues humanity could face "if" computer technology and AI ever reach (or are allowed to reach) the level of complexity seen in the movie. That said, it's a bit frustrating how the producer's left so many things up to the viewer's interpretation, for example... 1) Does the "Archive" computer system capture and upload a person's "actual" soul(?) 2) Or, is the "Archive" computer system just a "mourning service" that helps the living with the loss of a loved one(?) 3) If "souls" are uploaded, does the "Archive" company eventually tell a soul they died & were uploaded into a VR sim(?) 4) Once uploaded, are "souls" forever trapped inside the Archive system as "ghosts in the machine"(?) 5) Is a "souls" time inside the Archive system "decaying" because of technological design limitations, or is the "decay" the result of families/the living getting over their mourning, pulling the plug and moving on(?)

Seeing the end of this was epic and a heck of a plot twist though the main character found out he was indeed the the dead one he was an inventor and he had the know how to make A.I. but lacked the resource to be able to present it to the real world which is apart of what the other characters represent his love for his wife and confusion of his death to hers keeps him from revealing the work to the public to have him restored before being put to rest.

I think it's more like telling us how the other side of being in a coma is like. I think last part shows us the wife pulling the plug. I believe the conversation about putting the wife in a box, was about him keeping her trapped in the body if she is ever is in an coma. But the wife understands how he believe in it so much and since she was not ready to let go and was trying to honor her husband's wishes and held to the very last. Yet, he just won't recover and since he living off machine....like breathing tubes, oxygen etc. When she said she can't do this anymore. I believe it's has to with, that the hospital bills are getting too high and she probably want to start a new life. I also feel that the conversation over the phone calls means him in reality showing signs that he could get better or even maybe slight body movements. That's why the wife was still waiting around.

I do wish he was happy to die with his work... Personally, he would have had a greater character arc if he'd realized he cant hold onto the past and neither can Jules (His wife), that its best for both of them to accept the pain... but then again, George wasn't real per se, he was a simulation... I also noticed a few details... if you listen closely the waterfall has a background sound, similar to that of a white noise machine. Then some parts of the area had trees grown too perfectly, they were in line and exactly the same height and width (these are visible when he drive the Jeep out). Which felt a little unnatural, but that could just be me..... Then just the clear, untouched, pristine looking snow in general, we don’t see any sign of life near the prefecture. Then a detail about George, when he sees the dog in the lab, he doesn’t try to befriend it. Instead he chases it away, and we hear from him that you can access people’s empathy to a certain extent by how they respond to animals. I’m not saying George in reality was a robot, but his robots showed more empathy and care than he did... J2 certainly cared, but she pushed herself to suicide because of his ignorance. I did have a few questions, who was the risk accessor, what was the drone he saw flying while at the tower, why was the lab failing and loosing energy? (which forced him to come down from the tower) I like the movie a ton, but very unsettling and interesting to think about nonetheless.
@MovieEmporium

I thought the ending was really dumb. The whole drama about his prototype being stolen by another company was silly, the fact that he was making robots was silly, the fact that the people working at the funeral home made it into his fantasy is stupid but the dumbest part by far is that the robot could talk on the box-phone when he wasn't even in the room. Makes no sense and the ending feels like a total ripoff just for the sake of "gotcha!". Would've been better if it was all real and after the transfer the robot didn't wake up and he was shot or something.

I just watched this. I see that the most active banter in the comments is from several months ago, so everyone else has probably already moved on, but I was impressed by the analysis in this video and also the level of analysis in this comment section. All good food for thought. I guess one of my main observations is the quality of the story presentation. In the old debate of which one was better "the book" or "the movie" (any book/movie), one of the arguments for "the book" is that one is allowed to employ their own imagination to make of it what they want, like art. However, it seems that this presentation was well crafted to allow for that in this movie as well (I don't even know if there is a book for this story). Many commenters have offered different plausible interpretations. The beauty is that you get to choose your own "reality", and no one is "wrong". I wonder if the writer and director had a definite version of what the story was actually about or if they intentionally made it "flexible"? If the latter is true, good job! If the former is true, it would still be interesting to know what exactly they meant it to be. By the way, I must confess that when I first clicked on this video, I was kind of expecting someone else who didn't really know anymore than the rest of us trying to school us as though he did, but again I was impressed not only by the insightful analysis but also by the humble demeanor in which it was conveyed. So, good job, Movie Emporium.

There's a theory where as the company "ARM" was the only company existed and they actually hired him, but he got into an accident and died. They lost his skills but had him sign up for the "Box" beforehand which had an analog expiry date, and all the helicopters and army was just an illusion to make him complete his work before his own expiry. The company benefitted, but the actual lost was his wife; Not knowing what they were actually doing to and with him to get his work complete EVEN after his death. The most eff-ed up part is that, you can see his facial expression change when he realised it wasn't the wife that was in that box, but it was him (when he looked at the box mirror and also heard his own daughter's voice which was impossible since he only remembered his wife dying in the car crash when she was pregnant)

During the sequence of images, there is a funeral looking/somber one flash. 3 old parents and a brown haired lady in the middle. They are in a living room on the coach with their backs to us. Wow, this is an in depth explanation. I didn't catch the ending and reading this made me think of so many things, like what a person will do for love, and for not facing reality. I would have liked it, if this movie centered more around the bad guys.

You may want to watch 'Ghost in a Shell' if you haven't already, although the anti-feminism topics in this movie are mind blowing.

Honestly with the bad guys, I almost felt it was a defense mechanism he created and were never 100 percent logical and it was meant to feel that way. I saw the Ghost in the shell movie, and wasn’t a fan.

I finally come to the conclusion that the wolf is a mystery. I don’t know or can’t figure it out.

@@MovieEmporium I know in this types of movies everything means something. I showed it to my mom she's 74 and she loved it but said the waterfall shots were so many and so annoying so here I'm thinking that the water also means something. Btw as a funny side note I asked her if she knew he was dead and she said "of course" and I was like "how did you guess it?" And she replied "The car hit him on his side, of course he's dead" Lol simple but effective thinking I guess 😁
@MovieEmporium

@@dedsecleader6437 That's actually a good point, which makes me kind of think that something happened that we don't get information on , some reason for why the car crash happened. Wish we got more. You 74 year old mom catches on better then most of us.

The ending was basically another "it was all a dream" trope, resulting in his character journey ultimately having no meaning. It feels like a scifi short story from an anthology forced into a full story (of which I'm sure so many of us have read a thousand times before, a familiar thread in sci-fi literature), which just doesn't work to me as a full feature production. It would work much better if it was condensed into 20-30mins art-house featurette where he starts to question inconsistencies about his situation, building on emotional intensity and his need to hold on to life and his loved ones in order to validate the shock ending of everything being turned on its head.

But he went outside his area to get the emergency box. How will you explain that??
@MovieEmporium
@MovieEmporium 4 года назад
To be honest I’m not even 100 percent sure why he went out. That part always kinda bothered me because I’m like he has the kit, he opens it and everything is shielded for his protection, which makes the idea that maybe his death was caused by Arm, because they needed this work done, maybe this guy with the box was like the head of security or something. Sadly it’s a couple of the many flaws that doesn’t make senses.

Idk but I didn't like the ending, for me the better plot twist would be after he overwrite the memory of j3 and the archive phone rang and he answered it, he would still hear her wife and then j3 hits his head and j3 explains to him that the memory he transfered was the memory of j1 then the plot twist is j1 is mastermind of it all j1 commanded all of j2's doing and he thought that j1 ended up developing its ai at the age of 6 but he did not realize that it's still developing and observing him because j1 doesn't have hands and can't talk it can't communicate with him that's why j1 commanded j2 to do all of the sabotage because j1 want to have a better body. Then after the doors open the deputy arrested him and he tries to tell the truth but no one believe him then j1 smiles at him the end

Does extremely well in how it deals with the subject of death, bereavement. This was a real jewel of a film in an age of trash. Deserved better recognition. The lead actor was particularly good.

Well explained, I was thinking about the misdirection that J02 created, like it was the bad robot which didn't wanted J03 which is being created, also J02 sometimes ignores the hero all the time when she knows that the hero is creating J03, as we all have seen many robots movies in which at some point the robots becomes a villan or the company which the hero working on becomes a villan company, these thoughts and opinions which miss directed me to believe that all the wrong things which was done, was done by J02.. but at the end it was very confusing when I heard of the wife and her baby talking to the black box. Now after seeing your video it made sense that this not not another villan robot movie but about how people miss each other when they are gone and how according to the century where technology is capable of making consciousness of the person as archives when they are deceased.. this was a really nice movie.

Not sure why there are so many theories. I suppose its cool to see what others think but, I dont think it needs to be over complicated. Its pretty clear that George was the one who passed away and that his wife and kid survived.
