ARCHSPIRE Relentless Mutation Album Review | Overkill Review 

Sad everyone disliked the machine guns at the beginning of Calamus Will Animate, I love those

This is the tech/death that tech/death bands listen to.

This album is a masterpiece. 10/10

I don't particularly care for the whole machine-gun thing either (for different reasons) , but Calamus Will Animate is one of the best songs on the album along with Remote Tumor Seeker. For me, it's a 10 / 10 album. What I like about it most compared to say, their previous album, is that it's not lacking any substance even though it tip-toes on the edge of musical masturbation. I love The Lucid Collective, it's the album that got me listening to the band, but there are some things on it that seem like they were done just 'cause it could be. Whereas everything on this album seems purposeful and intentional.

Just picked up Relentless Mutation today and HOLY PISS. Really blew away my expectations. This band gets better with every release.

This album towers over Rings Of Saturn's last effort. The "Stay Tech" tagline is a shot at other bands who were once super inaccessible who are now throwing down djent chugs and metalcore two-steps (like ring of saturn). Relentless Mutation is a champion of the genera. 4.5/5 (7 songs is a little light)

One thing to consider on your point of them being "campy" with the machine guns on Calamus Will Animate: They were purposely mimicking Tech N9ne's Stamina as Tech N9ne is one of Oli Peters' major influences.

Really pleased that you reviewed this album Brad. Other than that weird type writer on overdrive part, this album doesn't make a wrong step. Spectacular, over the top, intelligent tech death. Thought that nothing was gonna beat The Replacire album for tech death in 2017 but these guys just smashed it out of the park.

Tech N9ne Death Metal

Good review but I think you could've talked a little more about the drums because I think they set the band apart just as much as the vocals. The INSANE gravity blasts in The mimic well or the bass drum rolls in remote tumor seeker would've been good examples to show. In my opinion Spencer is the craziest drummer in metal because of the outright onslaught he unleashes from behind that kit. But hey at least you're giving some exposure to a great band. I saw these dudes live in Iowa at a Fraternal Order of the Eagles club with a crowd of about 100 people. They are really cool dudes and fucking insane live.

All the best tech death bands are from Canada. Not only are they nice over there, but they shred!!

I love such long reviews and it is well done too, Brad. Spotify tries to shove this band into my ears about a month now, but I could not get into it (yet). These fast vocals are not really my taste, while I still can appreciate their uniqueness. In the same vein, you are right about the vocals making kind of room for the bass melodies, but you can pull this off anyways, like Horrendous, where the bass often carries the melody across guitar melody pauses for example. The last clip you played is really awesome, if the whole album would be like this, I would probably love it. I will give it another shot I guess.

Ive been listening to archspire since i was 12 so i was really excited for this album, i was kinda scared because of the new bass player, especially because hes not playing a fretless, but i was surprised how great it sounded, to me all 3 archspire albums are perfect 5/5

This album is so good, I've listened to it from start to finish nearly ten times already. Made easy by its 30 minute length, sure, but it'll get many more listens before the years end.

With 2 reviews I wish one of them would have been for Wolves in the Throne Room's new album... That being said I don't listen to much death metal but this review has inspired me to go listen to some tech death.

Hey dudes! Big fan here. I just wanted to comment a little late on this review... I totally understand the criticizing part about the tech death machine gun stuff... HOWEVER! There is a video out there somewhere, showcasing the dude that recorded and mixed the album and that intro on, "Calamus will Animate" he shows that the band was just taking a break one day to go shoot some guns. The beat on the intro where the vocalist is just seemingly rambling away is actually a bunch of different guns fired off that they themselves recorded! I think this adds to the quality of the song, that the band went out and did something cool and recorded it. Just better than the machine gun, snare drum kinda thing lol.

Tech Death needs some leaders, Archspire and Beyond Creation can definitely plant some good seeds. They remind us all that you can go as brutal and fast as you want but what matters most is solid song writing and creating something memorable that fans can delve into and drown in themselves. My back ground is DM, I love all sorts of quality DM from early days until now. And I totally dig this album. Origin and Archspire definitely have a story to tell you in addition to their lyrics with their music. I just wish the genre to focus more on song writing alongside technicality. And the slower parts are just well composed and dreamy, I thought only Mithras was labled meditative DM ! Brilliant review, but I might even give them 5 skulls :)

I wasn't huge on the machine gun part, but besides that, this is a perfect album imo. The entire Relentless Mutation song really shows what this band is capable of.

Gimmicky or not, I love this band, the first song I heard from them was Rapid Elemental Dissolve off of the album All Shall Align, and it blew my mind. I also watched some videos of the drummer, and during the All Shall Align tour he was playing with a broken cymbal, but it sounds like he got that fixed! Lol

This band is SOOOO good, I stumbled across them on Spotify (hate it all you want, I've discovered a lot of awesome music there) and have probably listened to the singles 100+ times and the entire album 50 or 60 times. Didn't even know they were Canadian, and that makes them even better :)

Good review. Having bought their last album though, I doubt i will get this one as it didn't have enough playback value for me. They're talented guys, but I prefer memorable songs, and their songs just seem to fly by so fast and snowball into the next one that I get lost amongst it. Fair play to them though 👍

Yeah... holy and FUCK! I mean musically, and I'm not comparing, but I've heard similar from bands like 'The Faceless' and 'Psyopus' < (spelling ?), but damn that vocal style is crazy!

Excellent review, and I think you hit the nail on the coffin with that remark about this band's conscious gimmickry. Seeing these guys tonight along with Inferi and Obscura and I look forward to seeing what they sound like and how they perform on a stage (and really hoping its not all "guitar masturbation" the whole time haha!)
