Archvale is an open world bullet hell RPG, that me and phops have been making for a few years. The game is built in GameMaker Studio 2. This devlog mostly covers some game design stuff, but I'll try to do some more technical explanations in future videos. Thanks for stopping by :)

I feel like nikkis themes sound more relaxed and upbeat and Gojis sounds more combat like in my opinion
@IDoZYT
@IDoZYT 3 года назад
yeah for sure! Nikki's tracks are focusing on really creating a cool atmosphere the first time you find a place, they are themes that will play as you explore. Goji's tracks in this video are for arena battles where you're enclosed and fighting!

I feel like ore could be used not just for crafting tools, but also to use as cover, where enemy bullets actually break it the more they hit. This could be used for more strategy in fights and also not having to actually “mine” the ore, rather using your opponents
@IDoZYT
@IDoZYT 3 года назад
that's a very cool idea!
@griflet1
@griflet1 3 года назад
@the guy that plays minecraft that's easily fixed tho, if you link the xp for mining to destroyed ore. Except if ore is randomly being destroyed for no reason that should work.
@griflet1
@griflet1 3 года назад
I just had the same idea! I thought maybe do that for the most valuable ore, but it could be for all of them. And it could be limited to some enemy types. A seperate idea is to have other enemy types degrade ore when they hit it, decreasing the number of nuggets dropped by every hit. This would impact the strategies employed by the player to lure enemies away from valuable ores or kill them faster. Wouldn't do it with the omnidirectional attacks tho, because that would be messy.

Gosh, I love those tooltips! Nothing like a well designed and aesthetically pleasing tooltip that gets me going! I know it's an odd thing to get hung up on, but man does it matter a lot. I've bought games based on UI design before. You guys are nailing this!
@IDoZYT
@IDoZYT 3 года назад
good to hear the tooltips are to your liking, very difficult to come up with the right way to present them using a pixel font! i know some pixel art games just go with a hi res font for their tooltips like dead cells, but i think we've managed something decent here without needing it! though, writing long descriptions in these tooltips would be very difficult

Maybe a good way of getting around that weird kill enemies/mine ores dicotomy is for the ores to "explode" and drop the parts only after you've killed all the enemies in the room. With that, you'll always have a reason to kill enemies when entering a room for the first time. You could still let the ore drops just on the floor and not automatically come to the player, so that they have the sense of "cleaning" the room themselves. Anyways, just a suggestion. Loving the devlogs :) Cheers! EDIT: And just to be clear, the ores only appear on the FIRST time you enter a room. With that, you don't incentivize players to just keep grinding rooms for ore.
@IDoZYT

One of the ways to deal with mining is to make ores in a type of enemy. And harder ore-enemies would require better gear, so it's workaround pickaxe system.

If you don't want to remove mining completely, you could space out mining spots more and make them give more ores, making it less of a chore and more a rewards. By carefully adjusting how often ores room happens, you could make this mining moment a welcomed and rewarding break from combat as well. Cheers

I want to comment on how much I LOVE the weapon comparison system, It's really small but it's such a nice quality of life feature. Also a quick suggestion, I'm sure its already come up but it might be nice to have the toad merchant offer upgrades to your flasks, since your max health is increasing at regular intervals it might be helpful to make it so your health potions are also increasing at regular intervals.

The potion thing makes so much sense. (Not only gameplay wise, but lore wise) I mean if there are magical fountains in the world that produce water that can heal you, why wouldn’t the residents of that world bottle up that water?
@riseofevillink
@riseofevillink 3 года назад
I think that instead of having the enemies directly drop the ore it might be better if they drop a resource needed to perform the crafting, like using lapis in Minecraft enchanting. For example, the shell armor would require both shell and slime, or iron armor would require iron and some sort of hot object, etc. that way mining the area can still provide some loot to make maybe smaller items like weapons and what not while bigger objects will require enemy drops and mined loot, or perhaps vice versa. I think leaving mining in is worthwhile as you could enter a new area and you might not be able to beat the enemies but could quickly harvest some mined goods that could lead to helping you establish a foothold in the new area.

Also maybe add a speed run toggle in the settings that's unlocked after beating the game that switches the inventory system to the old one for people that want to go fast. As somebody who watched a video about this game for the first time, my suggestion would be to add bonuses to tools or items that wouldnt otherwise be used. Make the pickaxe result in more ore compared to other items used to break them? Maybe ores could drop xyz rare items only when pickaxe has been used (or again, it adds a bonus %).
@ZeZa1515
@ZeZa1515 3 года назад
Those tooltips look so good now, I love that you can compare weapons right there. Maybe instead of ore drops, enemies drop an item specific to their type that could be used in some way. They could be ingredients for the frog chef to make other potions that apply a buff to your character or a weapon of your choice?

Maybe a way to make ore more exciting would be to give it a random chance of dropping exclusive items, like certain skill badges, very occasionally, meaning there is something unique you can only get from mining to balance out enemies dropping ores

About mining. I'm not sure you'll see this comment, as video is fairly old, but In a tabletop game Munchkin if the room doesn't contain enemy encounter, you can loot the room. So, my first thought when you said about slow-paced ore collecting was - add some caches, hidden loot or stuff. Just so the room cleaning is a bit more fun and interacting. Perhaps, something that would require you to use your brain.
