ArcMap vs Arcgis Pro? As far as I'm concerned, there's no contest. It's like a healthy young boxer in the ring with an old boxer on life support. These five tips will help you make the transition quicker.

I think that more attention should be given to establishing geodatabases. When I first ventured into Pro, I was fooled by the ability to transfer Map into Pro, but not back, guaranteeing the obsolescence of Map. I discounted the importance of establishing databases, and why I should spend time doing so because of the relative difficulty. Making layers was awesome. And, layers kept my symbolization, potentially saving me hours of tedious and repetitive work, awesome!! Suddenly there were at least five ways to save a map, and it was so cool-but even if I did all 5, no promise that I’d ever by able to reopen a working map again. Frustration. Frankly, I’m still working on it. I learn more every day. But a real hack would be instructions on making a map, and having it bounce flawlessly through several drives. Fear is a terrible waste of time as I don’t want to lose shapefiles, so I import EVERYTHING, and then wade through it. Not a good plan. Still learning to pare things down to sleek and sturdy.

It sounds like your transition journey is a rough one. Would you like to do an interview? Afterwards maybe I can see if I can help you sort out your import problems and data management issues? It wouldn’t go up on RU-vid, I have to interview 50 people for an online class I’m taking, so it’s for my own research. Send me a DM on Instagram with your email to @gischops and I’ll send you a link to my schedule.

Thank you. It has been rough. Yesterday I deleted an entire database on accident. Luckily the data is replaceable. The person I am working with demands frequent formatting changes.

Too many databases slows you down. Too few, means loss of work. Why are the remove and delete functions so close together with very similar meanings but very different outcomes?! Still trying.

Can you do a video on refactor Python toolboxes from Arcmap to Arc pro

I’ll have to look into that. I still have two ArcMap documents I haven’t ported over to Pro because they have python tools and I haven’t wanted to deal with that yet. 😄
