I discuss the overseeding pros and cons of Princess 77 and Arden 15 Bermuda grass seed. I've overseeded with this cultivar 3 times over the past 4 years and have seen it perform in all kinds of conditions. Arden 15 is the replacement for Princess 77 and offers tons of benefits over standard Bermuda grass. I go into all major benefits and provide evidence in this video.

I'm really enjoying these videos. Overseeding Bermuda seems to be a controversial subject. The cost and potential of it not taking well has kept me from doing it. I might have to rethink that though. I just bought a new house about 8 months ago and am working on getting this yard up to par. Patience is tough when you're used to having the #1 lawn in the neighborhood 😎😂
@RonHenry
@RonHenry 4 года назад
I totally get it Zman. Before I first overseeded, I saw the videos and read pages saying why overseeding is a terrible idea. I do believe that could be true if you're mixing major grass types. For example if you decided to overseed your Bermuda lawn with Rye in the winter, I could see how that could produce a suboptimal result. In my case I'm overseeding with the same major grass type: Bermuda. It's just an improved version of what I already have. I think my results show that it can work well, if you apply the seed properly. Just think of how much you're doing to dominate once you're rocking that "Super Bermuda" in your lawn. 😎 Thanks for your support.

Ron, you are amazing! Thank you for sharing all of your amazing steps to keep your lawn so amazing. I am about to over seed my front yard with Arden 15 where I currently have ugly common Bermuda and a large patch of Zoyzia that was planted before I bought the house. Anyway, my point here is how often to do water the over seed? I know that the seed must stay moist. I'm in Tucker, Ga so our weather patterns are the same.
@RonHenry
@RonHenry 4 года назад
As far as watering, I'd aim for 3 days per week assuming we don't get any rain. It's not very hot yet, so a light watering to keep the ground moist should be all that's needed. Are you planning to kill off the Zoysia before over seeding or hoping that the Arden 15 chokes it out over time? It definitely sounds like an interesting project. Tucker isn't too far away from me. Probably 40 minutes or so. Thanks for the kind words sir. Really glad you're getting some value out of the content.🤓

I sowed a full Bermuda lawn last year. Nuked it and put out seed. Came out great. It was a trio seed blend from Ewing irrigation. That’s when I’d use seed and overseed with it again. I also did it at my house with Princess 77 and you can see a difference between the Princess 77 and the original to the house 20 yr old Bermuda. I should’ve taken plugs from one area and transplanted them, because from afar you can’t tell, but up close, you can see the difference in textures. If you’re cutting taller, you wouldn’t notice as much. Cutting lower it is much more noticeable in their height and growth habits. I see the purpose, but now also know that it will spread and fill in on its own and cultural practices, not overseeding, will help with that. Just my opinion, bud. You can still tell that your yard clearly dominates your neighbor and there’s no denying that. Not everyone is going to come up and examine your lawn with a magnifying class and say, “that’s not Tifway 419, that looks different”. So, I say, if you need to, and are not the most patient person, do it.
@RonHenry
@RonHenry 4 года назад
Great comment Andrew. If you look at my video on Princess 77 and Tifway 419 from fall 2 years ago, (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-HqmOnQ2mwOk.html) I show the difference in color between the 2. I'd just overseeded and the Princess 77 had not spread and filled out across the lawn as yet. Last year and this year, it looks worlds better now that the seeded Bermuda has had an entire season to do spread. Tifway 419 and Princess 77 / Arden 15 seem to have pretty good compatibility. Overseeding with Arden 15 this year was so that I can try out Princess 77's big brother and to show my process for overseeding. It will be interesting to see if there's a noticeable difference in color over the next few months. I'll be sure to bring you guys along as I find out! 😎.
@andrewp.619
@andrewp.619 4 года назад
Ron Henry, indeed. The Princess 77 came in much darker this year, prob because it is thicker this year too. I get compliments weekly on my lawn from neighbors walking by, so definitely, nobody is complaining that I overseeded my hybrid Bermuda with a seeded variety of Bermuda. 😂 It’s all for the love of the lawn.

Yukon Bermuda. I live in zone 7 also. Had slightly better cold hardiness and drought tolerance than princess77. I wanted P77 for the fine leaf texture though. Spring greenup and winter dormancy starts when soil temps hit 55-60. With mild springs, and falls I wanted something to be green for longer to help with weed pressure. I have a green lawn April-November.
@RonHenry
@RonHenry 4 года назад
You’re much further north than I am so I can see how Yukon would perform much better than Princess 77. Arden 15 is supposed to perform better in cold weather than P77. It wasn’t really a think when you went to Yukon though. I’m really excited to see how this seed does later this year once the weather gets cold again. How tall are you mowing your Yukon?

Thanks. I was looking to overseed my common bermuda here in Texas and looked into a few types but I still have not decided. I like to cut my grass at 2" or so and Arden 15 and Princess 77 recommends a max of 1". I saw a few videos from GCI Turf on his bermuda blend that I might try out being that it has Blackjack and Riviera seed. You are right about the expense of premium grass seed.
@RonHenry

I heard really good things about the Blackjack Bermuda blend J Harris. I'm not sure how it would look at 2" since most Bermuda cultivars really like being cut at 1.5" or lower. Blackjack might be different though.

Hi Ron, stumbled across your video here - great stuff. I am near Alpharetta, GA and recently moved into a 2005-era home/yard where they used common Bermuda and I have quite the ill lawn. Currently getting it up to par with pre/post emergents and then eventually have to level out some eroded and wavy spots throughout. I bought a bag of Highlander Turf Bermuda from Hancock Seed Co. and have it sitting until it's time to overseed. I was also planning on using that Big Yellow Bag (SOIL3) to level the lawn. Thoughts on that seed type and the soil? Can I level and overseed all at the same time? Was thinking of also dropping down a balanced fertilizer and Humicar with the seed. Let me know optimal time to accomplish in GA weather - I've read around mid-summer. Thank you!!

Subbed to the channel. Love you videos! I am a rookie but have began reel mowing at 1 1/2 inch on my common bermuda. I live in a Southern California desert by PGA West. My 2 questions are: 1. When I overseed my lawn with PRG in the fall, how low can I keep that grass? Will 1/2 to 1 inch work? 2. What type of Hybrid Bermuda should I overseed my Common Bermuda with for extreme heat (115 to 120 degrees in Summer) in the desert? Thanks
@RonHenry
@RonHenry 4 года назад
Thanks so much JonD. Really means a lot. I've never overseeded my Bermuda with Rye so I'm not sure exactly what kind of results you'll get. You will want to mow it a touch higher than you are Bermuda. More in the 1.5" range is where it will be happy. I've overseeded my hybrid Tifway 419 with Arden 15. It matches the color very well. You could do that with common Bermuda, but be prepared to deal with differences in color while the Arden 15 spreads. How good of a job your do with applying the seed will dictate how even the look is. Let me know if I can help with anything else. Again, thanks so much for subscribing! 👍😎
@stevebuchanan4829
@stevebuchanan4829 2 года назад
I can help here. Perennial Rye will not survive the heat no matter how much you water or how high you cut it. It is just going to burn out . The most I’ve gotten Rye into the summer is early May. It is beautiful during the cooler months, and you can begin over seeding Rye in mid September in the desert SW, so that gives you from October to the end of April most years to enjoy the beautiful PRG.

Hey Ron I have been considering Arden 15 here in Nashville TN. I currently have tall fescue and as you would expect is A LOT of work in mid June, July and August. My concern is the dormancy during our winters here in Nashville, and I just don’t know about the color I would experience during the cooler months. Any thoughts or info would be appreciated. Thanks and keep up the good work👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
@RonHenry
@RonHenry 4 года назад
Heya Sam Queen. In my opinion, the issue with overseeding tall fescue with any type of Bermuda is what you'd have to deal with during the transition months. Bermuda comes out of dormancy in March/April while the tall fescue is still doing well. This is likely to slow the Bermuda growth because you have another grass competing with it. There's also the appearance difference you're likely to see when they're both on the lawn. This is the reason why I've opted to not overseed my lawn with rye in the winter months for a year round green lawn. I believe it would create too much headache once the Bermuda started to come back. Also consider that you'd have to be more careful which products you apply to the lawn because now you have 2 different grass types to consider for compatibility instead of one. Does that make sense?
@samqueen8276

@@RonHenry Yes we are about 6-12 days ground heat wise ahead in the spring. I decided to over seed once I get the yard aerated and a company to top dress the yard. Welcome aboard Saul. I've not seen Celebration in person to know how well the colors would match. I know Arden 15 blends pretty well with Tifway 419. They're both drought tolerant with Arden 15 supposedly having better cold weather resistance. You really can't go wrong with either. If you decide to overseed, be sure to get coverage as even as possible so that they 2 cultivars blend well. Realize that it will probably take an entire season before the color evens out completely.

Heya Thomas. The big thing with overseeding common Bermuda is that the color is likely going to be less of a match than Arden 15. That said, if you're willing to put up with a bit of difference in color while the Arden 15 takes root, you can go ahead with overseeding. Just wanted to give you an idea of what to expect. @RonHenry I have been experimenting with The Arden 15. It’s probably the wrong time of year here in central Texas due to the heat, but maybe you can give me a few pointers. I have added compost,sand,topsoil mixed to a small section to test the Arden15. The Arden15 germinates no problem, but dies once it gets to about 1/4” to 1/2” in length. I’m not sure if it’s the 100 degree weather or my watering. I try not to let the soil dry out to ensure I am getting maximum germination but all my Arden15 dies after about two weeks from germination.
@RonHenry
@RonHenry 4 года назад
I'd say more water J Anthony. Bermuda is pretty hard to kill once it starts growing so even though it's turning brown, I wouldn't count the Arden 15 out just yet. If you do another round of testing, lets try picking up the watering to ensure that for 3 weeks, the turf never gets dry. The new grass should be strong enough at that point to handle a reduced watering program

Not a great answer for this one Los. You can't use pre-emergent or you'll have poor germination. I would eliminate existing weeds as much as possible with a post-emergent herbicide like Celsius and/or Certainty and then plant your seed.

Ron, I am planning to level my lawn with sand and overseed it immediately with arden seed with No aerating. What are your thoughts, will the seed germinate on the sand?
@RonHenry
@RonHenry 4 года назад
I wouldn't top dress the entire lawn with play sand. You want to have some organic material mixed in. In Georgia, we tend to use river sand mixed with organic material. One of the benefits of top dressing is you're also adding nutrient-rich soil to your lawn. If you do that, then it's absolutely the best time to overseed since the new seed will have fresh soil to work with. Make sense? Let me know if you have any other questions.

I planted arden 15 about 3 weeks ago. Everything is coming in very very nice. However, i also have lots of weeds germinating at the same time. Would you recommend spraying while grass is still sprouting and in seedling stage. Or just wait till its all established?
@RonHenry
@RonHenry 4 года назад
He Dean, I would wait until it's established. If you want to get rid of the weeds in the meantime, I'd just pull them manually. Having said that I want to overawed with Arden Bermuda . Is this a good idea, or do I have to remove everything first?

Hi Giuseppe. The best way to go is to remove the existing grass before seeding. You'll get a more even result with less differences in color. That's the best way to go as long as you are willing to do all the work associated with it. It's very important to water the new grass seed regularly for the first 3 weeks until you get good germination. The hardest part of establishing Bermuda from seed is the watering requirements. If I have a Tiff419 lawn, I can overseed with Arden or do I need to pull up the Tiff ?
@RonHenry
@RonHenry 4 года назад
It depends on your tolerance for a temporary difference in color as the Arden 15 grows in and spreads throughout the Arden 15. The fastest result that will result in the most even color would involve killing your current grass and seeding the Arden 15. Tifway 419 is actually a really good grass type. Arden 15 is arguably better but again, whether to overseed or not depends on your tolerance. My lawn has been overseeded with both Princess 77 and Arden 15. Sure thing Frankie. What you’re seeing now is the Princess 77 from previous seasons. I imagine that by summer the Arden 15 will have taken root and we’ll see color differences if any. I know there's a feeling by some other lawn care enthusiasts that you shouldn't overseed Bermuda but I've had great results with it. If you look at my previous videos on Princess 77, I point out areas where there was initially some color difference. Over the past year though, it's evened out very nicely. Just takes a bit of patience like most things related to lawn care. 😎 So you are completely against overseeding one Bermuda type with another?
@FrankieKennethL
@FrankieKennethL 4 года назад
Ron Henry as a “General’ opinion, yes,,,I’m against overseeing with Bermuda or more specifically seeding Bermuda over a sod(hybrid) cultivar. With that said, it’s all in the context of what ‘look’ of turf you want. In my lawn for example, like you, I have a tiff 419 sod (15yrs ). Prior to getting into the LawnCare knowledge in forums and videos like your channel, I also over-seeded a few problem spots with Arden 15 (cause I had researched it was quite good in quality) but it became immediately apparent to me that I was not gonna like the results... it stood out among my tiff. For context, I cut my lawn at 10-12mm depending on the time of year so it will “tell’ on you more than a lawn cut at let’s say 1.5”. So if I were a devil’s advocate, some of the positives you covered may I turn become negatives...They both have different growth characteristics, different color, different blade characteristics, etc...inwish I could post pics here to show you what I mean.
@RonHenry

Your experience is very interesting Frankie. If you want, you can email me pictures at ron@ron-henry.com. I'd like to see what kind of color and texture differences you ran into. One thing that stood out is you said you overseeded a given problem area. Do you think your results would have been better if you'd done the entire lawn? I agree there differences in leaf texture and color, but if the seed is evenly applied over the entire lawn, it should blend fairly well. At least that's been my experience. Thanks for sharing your experience with overseeding.
@FrankieKennethL
@FrankieKennethL 4 года назад
Ron Henry that’s absolutely a contributing factor. The fact I only did spots. An entire application would certainly blend in much better. You will in essence end up with one of those “blends” that seed stores sell. Some are actually quality cultivars. But IMO suited for athletic fields, tall laws or higher traffic areas, not a golf course type application. Again. It’s just One mans observations and opinions. I think it would be a good idea if you can do a vid interviewing maybe one of your local golf course superintendents or foremen and get their experiences and observations.
