I like this follow up review idea! It’s nice to see if things hold up over time. I always shy away from anything over 20 amps because of the same heat issue. They all get warm but 50 amps is allot of heat. I now have so many batteries laying around I don’t need to be in a hurry to charge them. Lol

Well done to do the basic repair. Is it still holding up now a year further down the track? Wise move to back the current down likely reducing the strain on the MosFets. Would appear that most chargers are best not run at full capacity suggesting buying a heavy duty unit and cruise at a reduced amperage to extend product life.

Yes, it's actually still holding up after the repair. Thanks!

I sure do like to repair rather than scrap equipment. 👍 Nice also keeping them away from the toroid. Thought with 3 spots for caps being replaced by 2, I'd have probably put them in at a diagonal so the leads could be more side by side.

Ahh, diagonal, I did not think of that. Yeah, If it's something simple like a mosfet, or cap I will absolutely repair. I do hate trashing equipment.

I put a USB fan on any power supply or charger that gets hot. I put one behind my 20 amp LiFeP04 charger when I use it to assist the internal fan plus blow a lot of air on the metal case. Some of my power station wall warts get way too warm so I do the same with those and they stay very cool. I also have a 60 watt type C charger I use to quick charge some huge power bricks before storms that get too hot to touch so they always get a fan. I do the same when charging my solar power stations, especially if I`m doing it outside in hot weather, and it keeps their internal fans from constantly running and keeps the battery cells cool which is important. I just plug the fan directly into one of my small folding panels or a power bank. My 300ah 12v Ampere Time battery ran my tiny Frigidaire window air conditioner for 22 hours with the ambient temperature in the mid to upper 70s and kept my camper at 72 degrees. It used 2.8 kwh before I stopped the test. Not sure how much energy the inverter uses but I didn`t want to completely drain the battery and had to sleep. I`m setting up my emergency solar power system this month (or making a first attempt). I have the basics to get started. Waiting on a ground wire for the inverter. I don`t have wire cutters or strippers though to cut the MC4 cable to attach to the controller or the 6 AWG wire from controller to the battery. It came with lug connectors on both ends and they have to be removed on one end. If I run into issues I may have to wait until next month to order whatever I need to continue.

Nice, what frigidaire model is it? That's good run time, now I'm interested in the results in the mid summer. Keep me updated.

@@BradCagle I`ve noticed testing the frigidaire that the warmer it is the higher wattage the compressor runs at. I remember it using 500 watts last year but now it`s using 380-400 when the compressor is on.

I think you could MacGyver a HP sever supply to get 14+volts, Rubicon caps and a fan for giveaway prices...somehow I think you might already know this.

I've seen those, and some videos. It sure did peek my interest. I've also seen guys using them for crypo mining PSU's, which is where I think I originally found out about them.

My 50amp charger got hot as hell also - I had no patience so I returned it to amazon for a refund

Probably a wise decision :)

Nice find and fix Brad! A couple of considerations - 3 caps in parallel have a lower ESR than two in parallel and perhaps they should be 105oC rated capacitors too. I suppose lowering the maximum current will relieve some pressure from it so the 105oC caps may not be required. The ESR probably means a little more ripple - probably not important. Another possibility is to see if you can upgrade the fan so a lot more air is pushed through? 50A chargers are not cheap, so possibly worth improving its reliability.
@BradCagle
@BradCagle Год назад
True, but I bet those mega cheap caps that were in there were not truly 105c rated/capable. :) I'll be using the heck out of it, so we'll see if it holds up. Thanks for the info!

@@BradCagle I'm sure they weren't 105oC - they cost more. :)

Does it run cooler at 40 amps, please? Also what 120v AC in amperage or wattage does it draw at 40 amps DC out? A T Burke
@BradCagle

It does seem cooler. I'll have to check the AC wattage

Probably between 500w and 600w. My 20 amp draws about 300 watts I think.
@atburke6258
@atburke6258 Год назад
@@baneverything5580 Thank you. A 20 amp dc charger at 14.6 volts would put out 292 watts. Loss in the leads would be at least 8 watts. So in round figures, say 300 watts out. Dividing by.9 (if efficiency was 90%) says it would draw 333 watts from the AC plug. At 80% efficiency it would draw 375 watts. But that is only theory. I'm curious about what it would truly draw, and also the 50 amp model. A T Burke

@@atburke6258 I`ll put a watt meter on mine and check it in a few minutes. I need to fully charge up my big battery for a test. Connecting it to solar this month if everything goes right. I`ve been using it for power outages with the wall charger but if the power is out I can charge it some with my Bluetti EB70s and my two cheap 500w power stations to use my bigger inverter for my microwave, tiny air conditioner, or just extra storage for cloudy days in a pinch. I have a 300ah 12v Ampere Time LiFeP04, a 2000w pure sine inverter, and some odd 60 amp MPPT charge controller I took a chance on when only a few had been sold because it was half the price of others. Others who got one like it so I hope mine is good. For redundancy I plan to get simple in line 10 amp MPPT charge controllers that can be used with 12v 100-150 watt panels. I`m on a tiny fixed income with disabilities living in the boondocks of Louisiana in a camper with no transportation so I put the last of my savings into something better than solar power stations after I saw how amazing they can be when the power fails. And it fails a LOT here due to damage to our grid caused by multiple hurricanes in recent years. I`ve been very lucky to be able to get my cheap camper and these preps. I was homeless for years. We were hit hard here in central Louisiana twice back to back in 2020 and another time by Gustav in 2008. There were others too but I was in another region. I almost died of heat stroke after Laura in 2020 and saw people using generators running out of fuel because it was hard to get. So I`ve been carefully shopping for and learning all I can about off grid solar power for three years. I have 15 little power banks, rechargeable batteries for everything with chargers that connect to solar panels, 11 power stations between 250 and 700 watts, and the large battery. My biggest dream came true....I HAVE SOLAR POWER! And I truly appreciate what I have. My preps will go to a church when I`m gone.
