1/4" 12 point sockets are my money makers on helicopters. Most fasteners on aircraft are 12 point and most work is done in the 1/4" drive range.

Too bad I dont want to repair aircraft I want to fly them, but I already purchased a huge Stanley set with 1/4 and 3/8 ratchet and sockets... ONLY THEY'RE ALL 12 POINT!! And my scooters are all 6 point bolts

Titanium aircraft fasteners are 12 point, usually 1/4" heads and in a space where you need 1/4" drive; most of my ARP fasteners are 12 point accessible with 3/8" drive. Harley uses 12 point engine fasteners requiring 1/2" breaker bars then a 1/2" torque wrench for re-installation.

I was working on an old outboard motor once and the bolts holding the actual motor to the rest of the thing were 1/4” 12 point heads. Luckily I had a 1/4” 12 point socket. It surprised me though, 12 point sockets are definitely good to have around.

Head bolts on a lot of Diesel engines like 19,23 liter Cummins, 30 liter Cummins, 50 liter Cummins have a lot of 12 point bolts . Starter bolts on Caterpillar, Cummins, Detroits, 12 points are all over these big diesel engines, and the equipment they power. 12 point bolts are used on a lot of automotive stuff as well . Drive shafts on 992 caterpillars, Cat uses 12 point all over, Kawasaki loaders do also, and so much more.

Toyota has some 12 point bolts that you may need 12pt sockets for. And axle nuts on Toyotas are 12pt.

I'm embarassed to say it wasn't all that long ago it finally dawned on me that 12 point sockets were really a detriment when working on hex fasteners. God only knows how many bolt heads and nuts I rounded off with 12 point sockets (and box end wrenches) before it dawned on me that....hey...this never happens when I'm using those danged 6 point sockets and wrenches I never want to pick up. So I still have a ton of 12 point stuff that I'm trying as best I can to replace with decent 6 points as budget permits. Uggh.

drive shaft bolts for semis are 12 point. I have a set of axle sockets that are 8 point, on trailers socket size goes from 3 1/4" to 4 7/8" and they are 3/4" drive.

driveline bolts, head bolts, front wheel hub to knuckle bolts, starter bolts on some vehicles, axle nuts, flex plate bolts...that's about it lol.If I was on a 12 point socket fix, 3/8dr shallow/deep and 1/2dr deep.I would encourage anyone, to invest in 6 points first.

I found them on some aftermarket performance con rods I bought and they were super high torque so you might want to add on get a tool truck brand as well. I did use a craftsman china 12 point I had laying around but if I was torquing on the reg it would be a snappy. Since then I bought and recommend for everyone that builds motors to get 10-14mm in a snappy atleast in 3/8. Imo it is the little things that hang you up the most when it counts. You can always run out to the hardware store for a large specialty socket in 12 point. Oh and before I saw the end get them in deep as well chromies are the way to go.

For my 2007 R6, the swingarm calls for a 42mm ring/castle nut socket. I was thinking of getting a 42mm or 1-5/8 socket and cutting it. Do you think it matters much whether the socket i'll be cutting up is a 12-point or 6-point? Yamaha's official tool is only a 3-pin socket, even though the swingarm's ring nut has 6 slots in it. However, Motion Pro's version is a 6-pin socket. Do you think I should do 3 or 6? Torque is 68ft/lb.

Need them for driveline applications and for some axle nuts too.I only had to buy one for the Toyota axle nuts,a 12 point 30mm deepwell impact socket.Tried a 12 point 1 3/16,a very sloppy fit.The smallest 12 point fastner I have seen was a 1/4 for Harley Davidson rocker box bolts on their evolution engines

I heard folks say you don’t need 12pt and that 6pt is better. I was skeptical and kept my 12pt socket set I had purchased as my first tool set - just in case. Fast forward a few years and working on a rusty BMW, those 12 points saved me numerous times where a 6pt socket could not hold the bolt head due to the enormous amount of rust.

I rarely use 12 point for automotive use, but for the examples given I bought 12 point impact sockets. I rarely use them so having them in chrome and impact does not make sense to me. You should try the new high torque Milwaukee impact. It is rated for 1400 ft lbs of torque. It is kind of overkill for automotive use, but when you need it you need it. I live in the rust belt and use the Milwaukee stubby and mid torque about 95 percent of the time, but for the 5 percent of the time the high torque is awesome.

Great topic Justin. My last socket purchase was 12 point deep set in 1/2 drive. I'm more old school, I remember when most all the, especially 1/2 drive we're all twelve point. I don't think I've ever broken a twelve point, more likely to round off the fastener so that's why they came up with the 6 point. I want to get a Carlyle 12 point metric 3/8 drive set next. Most wrenches are still 12 point, I did get myself a 6 point wrench set in sae and metric they do have their place.

Great video. Made a lot of good points but there is no way the half inch Milwaukee impact isn’t going to take that the bolt off. Which kind did you use and it wouldn’t do it you said you use Milwaukee and snap on? Was it the half inch Milwaukee with 1400 foot pounds torque? I take the rusty lugs off semis those that are torqued to at least 550 ft-lbs. And most of the time guys are putting them on with three-quarter and 1 inch guns you know they’re talking I’m a lot more at least 800 to 1000’ pounds

These days most brands of 12 pt. sockets use a version of Snap-on's flank drive so there's less chance of rounding off a hex that's in reasonably good condition. I'm not saying you shouldn't use 6 pt. sockets, just that it's not as risky to use a 12 pt. these days.

It seems to me the question I have weather someone needs to have 12 point sockets or not really depends on who the question is about. For a mechanic, it sounds like having 12 points available is a definite requirement. For an average DIY person, it seems like it may be possible to never encounter a 12-point bolt still. All my Chrome sockets pretty much are 12 point, but, today, I don't think I've ever had to use one on a 12-point bolt yet. That said, clearly if I were to take on more complex automotive projects, I would definitely need them.
