I don't put chrome on an impact gun, but I don't impact anything under 1/2" drive. So my 1/4" and 3/8" drives are chrome with ratchets. My 1/2", 3/4", and 1" drives are impact.

I know this is old I'm out of new videos to watch .. but gearwrench pliers and screwdrivers are very soft expecally the pit bull dike pliers chipped the jaws up on a few tiney finish nails... And the ends on the driver's are all married up from light use

Depends on the job.. Mostly boils down too what I’m hitting, how hard I need to hit it, and how much space I have to swing. For example if I’m taking off rotors and they are seized to the hub. Replacing rotor? Mini sledge or metal face dead low.. not replacing? Soft faced dead blow but big. Taking rim off a duely? Biggest hammer I can grab and swing without smashing the bed up. Need to tap out stubborn cotter pin? Smallest metal hammer in the box. Replacing brakes and the caliper bracket scaled Over with slag? Small chipping hammer. sadly there is need for a lot of different hammers if you repair a lot of things..

I would add, if you're young: buy a lifetime warranty hammer set. I bought mine at 18 and have warrantied out those hammers over the past 20 years. Well worth it to me. Those hammers are useful for all kinds of things, not just car stuff!

I love my chrome sockets, but I really think that I should add the Grey Pneumatic 81659CRD 3/8" Drive 59pc Standard/Deep Length Fractional and Metric Duo-Socket set to my collection. It is a thin wall impact socket so it can be used for many different purposes.

1/4” I have only chrome, 3/8” I have both impact and chrome and use both, in 1/2” I have only impact... if I pull out the 1/2” it’s a bad day. Haha 🤣

Same here. But I got one set a sae 1/2” chrome deep Mac sockets. 20+ years old and still haven’t gotten worn out. The rest of the 1/2” is impact along with my 3/4” drive sockets

I agree with these guys. 1/4 chrome other then the 1/4 impact rated tripple square and torx. 3/8 have both as well but mostly use chrome. 1/2 i have mostly impact with a few exceptions.

I use to be like that but I find myself pulling out the chrome 1/2” drive a lot more than I use too because it’s easier to deal with hard to break fasteners.

@@richb2229 do you actually find the 1/2 chrome to be better? I switch between both normally if it isn't a space issue i just use whatever is easiest to get to. I always like to hear(read) about other peoples experiences. Sometimes its actually something i think about during the next time i am working on something(which happens to be almost dailiy)

I personally think that as a DIY a good 1/4 and 3/8 chrome set will work fine and 1/2 impact. If you have something with specialty fasteners then buy as needed if you are a DIY.

Was your gearwrench rep a Cornwell guy before? Seems like cornwell reps are a dying breed. Just lost mine after I bought over 2k in tools... I am a diyer at home. If money wasn’t an option would you just stick to snap-on? I’m think of just going to and sticking to gearwrench. I know your trying to make Craftsman Great again, but I’m not sold yet. My OCD makes me want to stick with one brand and have uniformity. Worth the headache or just buy whatever?

squeaky61 Yes used to be a couple more reps before switching to Gearwrench. No I will never stick to just one name brand. I never know what’s gonna break or how often it’s going to break. Honestly I prefer purchasing tools from big box stores rather than buying from the tool truck. I don’t mind ordering Tools occasionally online but again not my go to place for buying tools. But if you have OCD then me telling you to buy a little bit of everything isn’t gonna help you especially since you like uniformity. You like what you like nothing wrong that. Cheers! 🍻👍

Like the snap on for small sizes deep neck comes in handy. Sunex is my favorite impact socket because they hold up better then the Snap-ons can buy individual with life time. Got duo for my 12 points so I don’t have to buy impact and chrome but no warranty sucks rare use so it’s fine.

If I was only looking at Milwaukee I would Tell you that each are beneficial for different reasons. The Stubby fits in tight spots, the Mid Torque has more Umph.. & the Half inch is a beast. That being said it also depends on the fastener. Rusted? Stripped? Metal deterioration? Milwaukee is impressive. They also are not without flaws. Mostly battery issues that could be resolved if they put a little more time and effort into it. That costs time, money & frankly that might make the tool price go up. Soooo... hard to say what your needs are without observing the type of work you do, but I think you'll be satisfied for the next 12 months. If it's mainly DIY you may get a few years without any issue. You may never have an issue at all. I played around with the Milwaukee line for about 3 years and went a different direction. I started with all chrome then bought the impacts as I needed them. I still have most of my first set of impacts, Ingersoll Rand full(short/long/sae/metric) 6 point 3/8 & 1/2 with some skips. The only complaint I have with them is the sizing is only painted on and wears off with use. They are just as thin as GP Duo's and i have never broke one with professional use. I have & prefer Matco's ADV 1/4 impacts & they get pushed to their limits every day.

I have the $15 1/2 inch deep sae and metric 12pt impact sockets tough sockets easily way more durable than the campbell hausfeld and great neck socket sets I had I had destroyed several of the sockets on impacts of those two sets..not one messed up pittsburgh socket yet matte black not the gloss black laser etched set

I've learned to never have only 1 set of anything because if a wrench spreads or a sockets slips or rachet slips you put it down grab the backup and keep working if you got 1 then you got to borrow if someone will let you borrow so always have extra everything

Especially if you are in the middle of fixed something and it's imperative that it be fixed ASAP lol, because then you gotta stop what you are doing go and buy another one of the tool you messed up or exchange it,or spend all day looking for a equivalent you can make do with to finish the job, and there goes your day,why living on a farm in bfe...lol I've already had several socket sets,wrench sets,pliers,vice grips of different versions, several different screwdrivers, hammers,pullers, two tap and die sets,two bolt extractor sets,two timing lights,two or three dvom,4 different versions of a continuity test light..my best one being a lisle. Etc.. lessons learned the hard way lol

Let the dummies keep spending all the money on expensive impact sockets. My harbor freight impact sockets will give any tool truck impact sockets a run for their money. Been using them for years with no problems and have lasted years.

I personally avoid using impact tools and sockets unless I know the bolt/fastener I'm working on is hardened. And I can't speak for anyone else, but I just can't find it in myself to spend actual money on screwdrivers, given how stray ones seem to find their way into my toolbox.

My mobile cart has GearWrench impact sets 1/2" drive deep and shallow. 3/8 drive deep and swivel sockets plus ratchet wrenches. The tools have all stood up well and are used daily.

Not sure if you’re checking the comments on a video this old anymore, but I’d appreciate advice from anyone that wants to help out. I have a question about impact driver bits. I’m a DIYer, just work on my own stuff. So it’s all pretty random and doesn’t see a ton of use. Anyway, I am thinking about getting a drill/impact driver combination kit. And I’m wondering, for the impact driver, will all the bits that I have in my mechanics tool set that I got work? I recently got a good deal on a craftsman mechanic set that came with a bunch of driver bits. Screwdriver heads, star heads, hex heads, etc. Can I use those with an impact driver? Or will I need to get actual impact driver bits?

When I was lube tech I had some harbor freight impact sockets and the other guy bought some snap on ones. Mine lasted 2 years and still going, he’s had to replace his like 3 time in 1 year. I noticed snap on are way thinner than the harbor freight. Which I guess in some cases you’d want a thicker socket especially if all you’re doing is tires all day and they’re getting used all day but I can also see why you’d need a thin one because I’ve ran into times where s thinner impact socket was necessary.

They aren't the HF or your Tekton suck. They may have the fit decent & not break right away but they dont hit as hard. The cheap ones are just Chrome Vanadium the better ones are Chrome Moly.

Yes you can, but most will have to pay up front. I've have only ever seen one or two cases where a mobile mechanic service was able to get the tool truck to drop by once a week to their own house. Needless to say they were very busy and loyal customers. Cheers!

I have those I wiss crimper they work pretty good, I know trucks gotta make there money but I paid 36 bucks with the free cutters. The heat gun is also good but you want to run big btteries to get a better heat range.

You can get that iwiss battery crimper with cable cutter for 30 bucks on amazon. Gearwrench screwdrivers are like 55 bucks. Milwaukee heat gun m18 130 from homedepot Tool trucks seem to be a rip off. He didn't have one good deal. I guess if you need the ability to pay per paycheck?

Wish Snap-On never started selling cheapass GearWrench shit..The wrenches break super easy and even though they are cheap in my opinion it's not worth constantly replacing them. My Bluepoint ratchet wrenches are miles above them and STILL alot less than the Snap-On ones..

I looked at them extend ratchets im not sold on them. The head and neck look just too damn big. I have impact for 1/2 and 3/8ths and chrome for 1/4" just need to get impact swivel 1/4"

I replaced the oem tools torx set last month with the same thing rail is color coded, but the original version from 97 was sold by both great neck and oem and sold by auto zone auto parts.., and I have picked up almost complete assortment of the gearwrench midlength socket sets sae and metric mostly from jb tools buy one get one free.. and the ingersoll rand air hammer is probably your best bet,I have a devibiss air power tool company kit, the air hammer is durable and works great but is weak... bought a long time ago from harbor freight. There's several stronger options out now than it and the 1/2 air impact gun in the kit.

I’m saving the second half of this for when I get home and grab a beer myself. And even tho it’s a domestic I’m still using my Quinn bottle opener 👍🏽 After thinking I had every tool since I was a trade electrician and pops turned wrenches it was very disappointing after ordering lower control arms and ball joints and realizing that not only didn’t I have a big selection of 1/2 sockets but barely any 1/2 deep. A buddy of mine(a Chrysler tech) saved my ass and we did the job. The following day I went out and bought my first full set of Pittsburgh deeps. The obsession grew from there.

as a small engine mechanic it is very beneficial to have both. As not always do you need an impact. most times your using a ratchet so its nice to have the chromes. but then big rusty POS's come in and then you need the impact.

I use the Pittsburgh impact sockets, harbor freight is a 5 minute drive for me so it's the easiest place to shop from, granted I'm just a shade tree mechanic myself.

Chrome's are a must once you get in to European and Asian cars and then theres motorcycles where long hex and torx are a must (HD starters) I also believe in modifying tools for specific needs and wobble extensions are a must as well

Is the thickness difference more prominent with 12 pt chrome vs 6pt impact sockets? Reason for asking is that My S-K 6pt chrome sockets (1/2" dr) are actually thicker than my Wright 6pt Impact sockets. Great video either way!

Not all impact sockets are equal, that’s for sure. Even within a brand there can be significant differences such as between Pittsburgh (CO-V) and Pittsburgh Professional (CO-M).

Does anyone know if there are any weird fasteners on Chevy's? Like the e-torx on the Chrysler. I have a 2014 Chevy Express work van that I do the maintenance and repairs on. But I am, what I would call, a "novice" when it comes to automotive repairs... And I am wondering if I should pickup a set of spline drives or e-torx, security torx, or anything else that I may need, besides the normal 6 and 12 pt. metric hex tools that I already have?? Any insight greatly appreciated.

I prefer only impact sockets as the are much more durable and won't break easy. For tight spaces I keep chrome socket set.

Sunex 3/8 impacts are about the thinnest I’ve owned that’ll compare to chrome. GP are thicker and so are GRIP impact sockets. I own both chrome and impact of most brands and always gravitate towards impact unless I’m doing work in tighter places or something delicate and that’s when I’ll use chrome. Each style has its purpose.

I farm so I work out of a service bed what I do is a complete set of 3/8 drive chrome sockets sae and metric deep and shallow and because I use mostly ratchets and electric ratchet but I do carry 1/2 drive deep impact sockets only deep sockets. And I keep a set of impacts in the shop. That being said I think get both impact sockets are not that expensive when you can buy sunnex.

I cop the dollar store socket sets, $4 for a 10-19mm 3/8” socket strip, good for a backup if I’m missing one size in my craftsman set lol. They’re made from soft metal but even then, the dollar store tools are great as backups or cheaply replaceable tools. I have a 1ft adjustable wrench that I got for $4, made from soft metal but that’s like 25 percent of regular cost (for a cheap one at that). When the wrench jaws started to bend out and were no longer parallel I milled the top jaw to be equally crooked and parallel with the adjustable jaw

The Chicago Pneumatic .498 air hammer is superior to the Astro one. I've seen them side by side at the shop, and the CP one seems to hit a little bit harder. But they're both killer.

Excellent assessment Mr dow. I was going to waste my time and say I've already had this argument with heavy truck technicians, they usually say you only need impacts for big and heavy. My argument is if you think that you've never done interior work where clearance is everything.... Thanks for sharing!
