401Ks were absolutely meant to replace retirement benefits supplied by the companies. That's why they came about just before pensions started going away.

If it’s matched, put it in. Invest in side businesses until you find one that you can make a living from, then make the choice to go all in. Once it’s bringing in enough money, make the jump to hire the right people to run the business, withdrawing from your retirement account if necessary, and turn it from a job to a recurring revenue source, reinvesting a decent percent of the profits, but giving yourself a payout so you know you have skin in the game. Hire a prepaid legal firm to deal with the unfortunate events that inevitably come from running a business.

I personally always tell my friends and family to never rely on one type of investment for your retirement. I think you could have a 401K as a complement but I think IRA and Roth IRA are better options in my option. If you are going to be on the high taxes in the future go for Roth IRA and if on the lower taxes go with IRA.

Did you intentionally put the titles at 410K as opposed to 401k?

roth over 401k. I feel you can make money faster investing your self with your own stock picks or real estate and reduce your tax as well with real estate.

I think 401K are ok but I personally like dividends paying stocks much better.

It's nice that qualified dividends are only taxed at 15% up to $500k income. Once I get closer to retirement I may change my strategy a little and invest more in dividend stocks.
