A lot of teachers are saying that fanning the club open on the takeaway is horrible even though the majority of our golf legends have played that way. Bobby Jones, Ben Hogan and Sam Snead (probably the best swing ever) to name a few. The argument is that “spinning” the arms so that they time the middle of the face of the club on the way down is too difficult. This video tells us why most of today’s teachers online are wrong about this with the exception of #John Dunigan @ JD Golf TV. Although he has questions about this technique, he also says “If it works for you, use it.” Believe me after 57 years of playing, the only right way for you to play swing is YOUR WAY because it probably matches your body movements and center of balance the best.

One of the best coaches was John Jacobs. He was the first person I ever saw explaining about how to play Golf in b&w on TV back in the 1960's. The overwhelming point he made was, "It does not matter what you do in your swing, you only have to get the club back to the ball facing down the target line". It really is that simple.

Well getting back to the ball with a square club face will start the ball on line but depending on your swing path the ball can curve any which way from there. So it’s not just that simple.

I think it is a square to square release v a roll release as to whether you fan the club face open on the backswing. In the eighties it was all the fashion to fan it open on the backswing. I was taught it and then roll released through the ball by rotating my forearms. The modern method is a lot simpler now.

Old school v young school Tony but Old is my way and you don't have to turn left elbow in on take away to keep club head to spine angle.

you failed to mention one important advantage of this backswing/takeaway technique. on the downswing, you're going to have to get in this position. so, if you are closed on the backswing, you're going to have to to flatten the shaft on the downswing. where if you use the "open" backswing you are essentially "presetting" the downswing, and obviously the fewer manipulations you have to make on the downswing the less likely for an improper delivery.

I can't agree more with you, we are all different, find a swing method that works for you, practice it, play it and have fun. It's a great game enjoy it and don't worry about others who think their method is the best. I rather hit the ball straight like you do than further into the woods...

Great video, but according to Trevino he was closed turning back then no release follow through, which i think these closed takeaway players would also do, more work less distance. To each his own, coaches need to watch your video then have their players watch it

Yes the swing works providing the hands don't get in front and you don't lift and lose posture.Can you give us a drill to contain these 2 swing faults Tony to avoid slicing.

Look at Tom Watson's instruction video on here about spine angle where he is holding a long stick. That will really help. Your lower body especially hips start the downswing but don't let your hands from the top go out away from you like they did with Bobby Jones. They must come down on the plane or ideally just under the plane they went up on. That will mean you don't spin out after impact. That will lift your head. The best to watch for head position throughout the swing is Nicklaus. Look at him back in the sixties and notice how still his head was whilst hitting balls a mile! Good luck. Tony is saying this but just to ram it home for you ok.

If you do it correctly, gravity and centrifugal force will square the clubface. Keep rotating and swing between your feet.

It works perfectly, i call it open to square, in Bobby's day there were shut face players much as there are today they just use different terms. Either way works but i think the shut face method is more off line with the woods. You can work the ball better open to square. I dont like when they say fanning it open because your not its a turn and yes it will be square at impact. Good video sir. And remember the greatest Amateur was also the greatest of them all. 13 majors retired at 28 years old went months between tournaments without touching a club and had a 46% win rate yes 46%.

Snead most definitely did not "fan the club wide open" on the backswing

He did however come over the top- he thought hitting the ball as a pull shot with a closed face-so pulling it to his target would give him extra distance

@@TheForgottenGolfer Snead wasn't OTT in the usual usage of the term. It was OTT only in the sense his DS plane was "over the top" of his BS plane. He had more of an inside takeaway so that was always going to be the case

But like I said, he aimed to the right, took it way inside, came over the top on the DS in order to pull the shot left to the target for the extra distance. He probably didn't have to, but he gained extra distance that way just as we do when we close our club face at impact and it goes left of the target. Except he planned the pull to hit his mark. I read this over and over again when I was a teenager. There were quite a few tour players playing the same way at the time.
