The person might have been kicked from the tournament if it was using the duel commander banlist, which the fast mana that was talked about is on the list. Could be that it wasn't relayed or displayed properly during entry or signup.

Removing reminder text, i fully agree. With so many sets coming out and so many new abilities, it gets difficult to jump into a set when reminder text is just gone. What does discover do? not sure. Disguise? don't know. Craft? not a clue. Let me pull up my phone real quick and google the rules in the middle of this commander game.

I found it annoying to play the Ixalan Pirates Precon when I played a creature that created a map token, but it didn't say what the map token did. Now of course since it's a precon there's a map token included in the box which has the reminder text, but would've been nice to see it on the creature.

Commander tournaments are an oxymoron, however...the LGS should be plainly stating the overarching rules. Whether they're Cedh or EDH or something in between. They should be posting what cards are unacceptable for the event and putting it in writing. Basically having the rule zero conversation on paper before taking entry fees...

The best tactic for dealing with that would probably have to be giving a budget (determined by tcgplayer/cardmarket/etc. prices) and probably allowing proxies

@@michaelcollins4534 Not true, as I stated in my comment, my LGS has a Point based commander night with store credit on the line and has been running for a year+. No one typically brings anything cedh or that will roflstomp someone out the game. Ppl have been coming to our events from other lgs because its inviting.

I would like them to shorten the frase" use mana as though it was mana of any type to cast" with a keyword or something. Having a play from exile or steal deck it gets very wordy to repeat multiple times per match.

1v1 commander has a different ban list than multiplayer commander and, mana crypt for one is banned. In that context why wouldn't the LGS remove the player playing banned cards?

I also thought there could be multiplayer on Arena when I first saw that card, but then I realized it was just an easier way to word it for the opponent. It saves a ton of text by wording it that way, rather than putting 3 lines of text saying the same thing twice, once for you and once for the opponent

How is "from the library of the player to their right" simpler than "from their opponent's library"? Assuming we're limited to 1v1 then each player's opponent is already defined so there's no need to specify a direction.

But y'all can keep dreaming about a 4 player mode if y'all want to... A card that refers to you will say "you", not "your opponent's opponent" or "that player's opponent" lol...

The example crim gave of missing reminders text actually happened with cryptic coat which lead to funny moments on the aspiring spike stream as he figured out how every aspect of the card worked

I remember hearing Maro (can't remember where, sorry, likely his blog though) talk about how R&D does explicitly consider digital when they design. The example I remember him using was something like Quick Study: In the past, they would've had target player draw 2, but R&D didn't want digital players to accidentally input the wrong target when you're going to pick yourself 99.9% of the time anyway, so now it's "you draw 2 cards" instead. I don't think this practice is ruining Magic, it's nice that they're doing things for Arena players, but I am concerned that it constricts designers from making cool cards just because they'd be a nightmare for digital. Would we see something like Emrakul today when it was such an epic effort to make it work on Arena back then?

Another subtle example is putting small numbers of cards on the bottom of your library. Before Kaladesh, pretty much every effect like Collected Company, Goblin Ringleader, or Ancient Stirrings would default to putting the cards you didn't choose on the bottom in any order, which is easier in paper. While it hasn't vanished entirely, most newer cards have you put them on the bottom of your library in a random order instead because it's easier for digital magic.

Good example@@Marenth - the number of times where "random order" vs. (essentially) "an order of your choosing" for a few cards to the bottom would be meaningful is probably nearly zero; the bottom of your library is a pretty hard zone to interact with! I know there's a couple cards that care about it, but I think that's mostly a Commander thing. Like, if you scry a card to the bottom, you're almost certainly not seeing it again unless you tutor for it or shuffle again and draw it from somewhere else, in which case the order placed doesn't matter. The "target player draws 2" vs "you draw 2" is another good example - I can support eliminating this choice where players would like 90% do the obviously correct thing to target themselves with it, 0.1% choose the other to finish someone off by decking, and 9.9% frustrating misplays. I once saw a game on MTGO where Seth was playing against Amulet Titan, and watching all those triggers tick by was a drag. Might as well try to shave down a lot of more-or-less useless clicks where you are essentially confirming a really obvious game action.

@@Marenth The 'in any order' variants definitely had another subtle downside as well. That being that people were spending a lot of time deciding the order to put the cards in. A choice that very likely did not matter but at the same time could be rather complex. Easier to just give them a quick shuffle and pop them on the bottom.

Just to highlight, for people that don’t know, the reason foils curl is because they aren’t foiled on both sides. You see the same thing with woodworking. If you paint one side of a board the different sides will absorb moisture from the air at different rates (and expand/contract at different rates) and cause the board to warp. Foiling both sides would fix the problem but presents an obvious challenge when it comes to people playing without sleeves. Making foil patterns with lots of alternating, small foiled and unfoiled regions would help mitigate curling to an extent as well.

I was thinking about this - I wonder if they could foil the opposite side, but then cover it with something opaque so you can't tell it's foil. Then you get a standard magic back that also acts like the foiled side with its moisture absorption.

In Yu-Gi searching your library always implies shuffling it afterwards, trimming down the need to add "shuffles their library" after any search effect. Would trim down ramp cards and tutors at the same time.

This is a good point, I don't think there's a single effect that permits a player to search WITHOUT shuffling afterwards; while I'm sure an overwhelming majority of players wouldn't even try, no doubt someone trying to spike a tournament would try to search then note down their top few cards (or all, why not).

Alt and textless versions of cards can definitely be annoying, but unless you're going to also mandate all cards in a tournament be in a single language it's hard to say it's a new or unique problem. The solution to both is having your phone ready.

I can see an argument for textless cards. Originally they were smart enough to do it only to cards with like, a sentence of rules... but these days they'll turn anything into a textless card... no matter the textbook of rules it might have. I do have sympathy for any tournament lost because someone might play a textless card and nobody remembers EXACTLY what it does... I don't see ANY argument at all for alt art cards... they still say what the cards do on the cards.

Shortcut red card Exile: Impulse 2 until end of turn, or Impulse 3 until the end of your next turn. Instead of having to say: Exile x cards from the top of your library. You may play them this turn

Problen is some cards are play vs cast until end of turn. Add on until end of next turn/next end step/your next end step and they would need at least 2 keywords or more to do this.

@@themrrental2509I see no problem moving forward just being able to use the wording for playing cards moving forward . since playing cards still lets you cast spells ; it just let's you play lands in addition Edit: impulse x until end of turn Or impulse x until end your next turn And that would eliminate " exile cards from the top of your library you may play them" Though you would need a new keyword for exiling opponents cards from top of their library so maybe something like "plunder" Plunder x from target opponent Plunder x from each opponent

But I was going to say that I like impulse as a keyword and it should be about playing cards since you still get to cast spells for cards that care about casting from exile. But there would have to be one for doing the same with your opponents library why not call it "plunder" Plunder x from target opponent Plunder x from each opponent And can add until end of turn/ or until end of your next turn/ or as long as they remain in exile

There are cards that tell you to search graveyards and/or hand. Finale of Devastation, Invasion of Arcavios, and lobotomy effects are examples of this. However, the instruction to search a graveyard or hand only happens when the card also instructs you to search a library.

Whenever I start a EDH sessions I keep it as bring whatever you got since worrying about power level is just a hassle. Then if its about testing the deck then my group usually talks about whether they want to test it against average prebuilt edh or try against maximum risk.

22:07 The problem with this is that they're reducing text not for making things simpler, it's so they can add even more conditions, restrictions, bonuses or other effects to a card to increase it's complexity and add as legitimately make cards even more wordy and complex than they have already become in the last 4+ years. I wouldn't be surprised if 2 years from now ETB will just be added to replace enters.

I like the exile land idea kind of... but I think a better design would to make it an exile fetch basically. you can't do recur shenanigans since you exile it but otherwise it's exactly the same as a fetchland. that'd be a really excellent land to have printed.

"Ramp" could work as a shorthand. "Ramp a basic land tapped" works for Rampant Growth. "Ramp a forest land" works for Nature's Lore. "Ramp X basic lands tapped where X is the number of lands you control" works for Boundless Realms. Not sure if ramp is worth shortening in general tho.

i think the term "fetch" would work for any searching of the library for lands fetch 3 basics put 2 onto the battlefield, fetch up to 2 forests and put them onto the battlefield, etc.

the thing with the text removal, there is a big difference between keywording and text simplification that still fits within the rules and templating. ex: we could keyword the "ramp idea" though not using the word ramp and it would be narrow but useful. changing search tho does not function like a mechanic of its own and reducign its wording to just search would limit design space of using the word search or searching other zones in the future.

It needs to be legible... I'm colorblind and some of the Secret Lairs are impossible to read. As a self imposed rule I bring a printout of any foreign language card or secret lair that I can lay over the original at my opponents request.

I have a Japanese Kamigawa Patron of the Moon for my Moonfolk typal deck in a clear case and the other side is the mystery booster English one. My Giada deck has the JP anime version on one side and English on the other. I think most people with textless or foreign commanders do something similar.

I've found that Commander is fine for things like Point or PreCon Leagues but if people want to 1v1 compete, pick a competitive format or define the power level in a way that's easily understandable. Pauper EDH is a thing if you're trying to keep the power levels within a certain threshold and budget consideration. French/Duel have their own ban list(s) and whatnot I'm pretty sure. There's a reason WOTC barely supports like a dozen formats. You can't just keep shoving a social format into a competitive structure based on however Judge Hank feels that night.

RE the Reddit post - The only time I’ve played Commander for prizes was Commander Legends Draft where I built a Nevinyrral, Urborg Tyrant deck that only cared about wiping the board and playing my commander in the same turn for 2/2s. The rest of the deck was nothing but counter spells, removal, discard effects, etc. and it’s the only Esper commander I’ve ever built/played in over 10 years of Commander. So while the post may not tell the whole story, the idea of being kicked out because the store doesn’t like your deck when in a tournament/prize setting is insane. You’re asking people to sweat when you put prizes on the line.

I can understand banning foils, including the masterpieces and such. Just because of the curling. When i was foiling my abzan deck, back with rhinos and lotv, i made sure to shuffle before looking to see what foils id be ordering this time, took all nonfoils shuffled them and ordered whatever i "drew" led to no issues at all

My issue with the foils conversation is that some cards ONLY exist in foil or (as Crim pointed out) the cheapest version of that card only exists in foil (eg bundle version on The One Ring) so while the rest of your deck is non-foil you are forced to have to play foils because that is all that exists. You cannot force someone to foil their deck because WOTC made a busted foil only (before secret lair) Buy-A-Box promo card (Nexus of Fate) when they show up to a tournament.

i think another motivation for arena wording stuff as “target opponent” and “to your right” is to let players play them with proxies if they wanna put in the elbow grease to make alchemy work in paper. now, in reality I don’t think anyone wants to do that but I do still think wizards cares

My LGS does EDH tournaments sometimes that he specifically lists as high powered, but people join with casual decks and get frustrated with the power of other peoples decks and drop. I think it should be labeled cEDH, because that is the crowd he wants to draw in but I can't imagine that would actually fill an entry since there aren't many people that do cEDH at my lgs maybe only 4-6 at most

19:00 I like Crim's move here, to keep texted versions on hand of all their deck's textless cards. I hope he does the same with the full text basic lands :P All joke aside, I do the same with all my double-faced cards, with an extra copy on hand flipped around in a different color sleeve, since I hate de-sleeving and re-sleeving my double-sleeved cards.

Step 1: put text on the back of full-art cards. Step 2: realize that you can put "some" reminder text on the back of normal cards. Step 3: "Questing Dragon Beast" with 5 keywords, 3 activated abilities, 2 ETBs and couple of lines of flavor text, because why not, we have ALL that space on the back, LET'S USE IT FULLY!

Other card games keyword actions like entering & leaving the battlefield and such and honestly this would do a lot to declutter text boxes imo. Imagine, you could have a Wood Elves' text box be as simple as "Fanfare - Ramp 1 basic forest, Shuffle"

My LGS hosts a point-based Commander tournament, its been going on for a year and everyone who attends seems to enjoy it. Avg of 16 ppl each weekend and it goes well. The point system we have encourages casual play. Every once in a while we have a player who plays a deck that verges cedh but loses anyway because they dont get enough points in the end.

@@ryanstuck4292 We have 2 sets of ways to score points, 1 is Play Points and to get them they vary. The community put in their suggestions i.e Get first blood with a commander, non commander and non combat, each being a different point. We have Deck points as well i.e Does your deck have the least amount of lands or the most sorceries. We post these points a half a week ahead so ppl can prepare. There are few points that are set in stone as they are recurring each week but we have like 12 of each to score on and as well as voting at the end who had the coolest deck and who was the most fun.

I get the sense that WotC is not designing cards for digital but rather the digital designs are influencing how the card designs are thought of in general. Kind of like a feedback loop of "what can we do with digital only" > "hey that's a pretty cool design, what would it take to do this in paper"

I don't mind the change of "enters the battlefield" to just "enters", and it's way better than the alternative of printing "ETB" on the card. But I hate that Magic cards are getting so wordy that WotC needs to do this sort of thing to save space in text boxes.

Interesting card design I just thought of that would allow a counterspell to be used to stop a combo but not also funstion as a way of protecting the combo at the same time. Shut Down 2UU You may dicard a blue card instead of paying this cards mana cost. If you do it cannot target a spell, if that spell also targets a spell. Counter Target Spell. --- Effectively it can do the free shutdown a combo thing for free, but cannot counter someone elses counter spell on the stack unless they actually pay the overcosted counter spell.

In here we have commander tournaments that works. It is 2v2 (not two headed) and have limits with the price of the deck. The deck must have $150 or $250.

When EDH started our stored adopted it very quickly. A lot of long time players with huge collections we couldn't' play with. LGS decided to hold a tournament. 4 player pods. Winner of each pod would move on to next round. 40 players showed up. The top 4 players get put into the same pod first round. Claimed pods were random.....yeah right. I'm playing Animar, Soul of Elements. The precons were rather new at this time. I keep my hand. I can win on turn 3 or 4. I'm last to act. Player 1 sol rings. Player 2 land mana dork. Player 3 don't remember. Me Turn 1 land > birds of paradise. Player 1 kills my birds of paradise. Player 2 ramps, Player 3 don't remember. My turn 2 play land go. Player 1 Plow Under my 2 lands to the top of my deck. I spend the next 2 turns replaying my lands from the top of my deck and nothing else. Player 2 Plow Under my 2 land to the top of my deck. Another 2 turns playing my lands from top of my deck. Player 3 Plow Under my 2 land. During all of this time the entire table is attacking me with everything they have while I have nothing in play. I paid $25 to enter that tournament. NEVER AGAIN!!!! EDH is a flawed tournament format.

I’ve had discussions about card games and referred to 3 and up as multiplayer as a “common” way to express this but people keep correcting me that 1v1 is “multiplayer” as if I didn’t know that. I just don’t think it should be considered multiplayer since all tcgs are at base level 1v1. What do you think?

12:47 nah, I agree about banning them because of accessibility issues. Some of these cards are extremely hard to read, especially the latest secret lair cards. The tournaments should allow proxies in this case.

Seriously, the LTR ones are utterly illegible. Saruman of Many Colors takes like three rereads to have a guess at what it does even BEFORE the words are smeared all over half the card. Pro players like LSV looked at that in their set review and were like ".... what?"

Okay, but some of the various printings have been legitimately a problem. I'm not saying we should ban them outright, but things like the textless cryptic command and phyrexian cards have made it feel like you have to play with a gatherer page open. Also sucks the the cheapest version of any card is typically it's phyrexian version so you're a lot more likely to see them.

regarding juggle the performance, I feel inclined to believe that they are hinting towards multiplayer in MTGA. Magic has a history of teasing future keywords on cards (goyf for planeswalkers, atraxa for battles), which this sort of announcement would be similar to imo. also, regarding why use an Alchemy card for this “sneak peak,” I could see them wanting to create buzz and conversation around a format that they are trying to sell to enfranchised players.

That tournament story reminded me of the fact that selling my collection and never looking back was the best decision I’ve ever made. Save for the rare individuals or content creators (like Seth or Crim), everyone else, from WOTC to players to LGSs to Content Creators, they all seem hellbent on making the MTG community (and general experiencie of playing MTG) THE ABSOLUTE WORST…

You CANNOT have a land that exiles itself to pull a basic from outside the game. Even if it takes up a card slot in your side board. It makes 5 color piles have no draw back at all. De building restrictions are the heart of the game. If you are missing a color you built your deck wrong.

Your "commander on Arena" discussion made me think maybe Wizards could make a new commander online client that you need an Arena account to log in to, that way you could use your Arena cards on this new client. I doubt they're working on it at the moment tho, it's most likely just formating an online only card's text as if it could have worked in paper or maybe they thought about multiplayer on Arena as a concept and this is future proofing just in case they actually manage to make it work in the future.

Although I agree that the card is phrased like that for a more accessible reading; perhaps I could entertain the idea of a multiplayer mode that only uses Alchemy cards. This would be the way to give people what they want in a water down, weird but very WotC way that forces everyone who likes Arena to play this format and keeps the integrity of social Commander outside without breaking the game that much.

The issue with the many card variants has been a frustration of mine for ages. I understand the people like having art for card that suits their style/interests, but I was watching a round of pioneer during the recent pro tour, and halfway through the match, I look over at their lands and every single land on the table looked like it was from a different card game. It just looked really ugly from a viewer's perspective and I couldn't tell what lands were in play. That didn't used to be the case, but now it feels very alienating. Definitely turns me off from watching coverage when someone plays a card I know, but don't recognize the art.

The removal of reminder text was especially infuriating lately because it mainly affected the alt art cards, so if you pulled the card with the cool art like one of the cool dossier frames from Murders and it was one of the new keywords you were kinda SOL on what it did unless you also happened to get one with the default frame too (or decided to look it up via phone). It's like cool card art but what does it *do* again? It's not a matter that it doesn't fit because the default printings still have them so... why WotC?

The question about “a land that sacrifices to fetch a basic from outside of the game” how is that functionally different than a “choose a colour as this land enters” card? Because a lane that can sac itself to go grab any basic has to enter tapped surely if you want people to ever actually run basic in main deck, so I just don’t get what he’s asking.

The "choose a color" lands can already do this if you just can't stand putting a single basic of each color in your deck for Evolving Wilds / Prismatic Vista. It seems like what this person really wants is just even more pushed 5-color fixing for competitive formats, to which the answer is... umm, no. Formats with good fixing already struggle not to become 3/4/5 color soup. Anything you could print that would magically "solve" color-screw forever would also turn all decks into 5 color decks.

i always hated the debate about textless cards, because for a majority of the people I've played with, foreign cards are just as unhelpful, and I don't see people going around trying to get people to not play foreign cards.

Sounds like that LGS needs to implement a price point then, cause clearly they took issue with the OP using strong staple cards, well those cards are expensive. The best way to limit the use of them is likely a price ceiling. Because if the argument was that his deck was 1000s of dollars more than the rest of the casual store, then limit him into a similar price bracket
