Audiophiles seem to question the quality of Chinese made high end audio products. What's Paul think about that?

I was always wondering two things, first if all, does tube pre-amp help or hinders sound resolution for sonically very dense musical genres like Black Metal or Technical Death. Secondly, JBL Synthesis horn speakers ... are they better for Metal than Klipsch or regular cone audiophile speakers?

Paul, thanks for those wise words! As you state in your video, it is about the company, their people, their goals and how all resonates with thos of the buyer. We in Germany had great brands in consumer electronics that have been swept away by the Japanese companies in the 70ies and 80ies, and now more and more good products come from China or are manufactured in China. Global economy tends to follow long-time swings or movements that drive change and innovation. Yes, it is not about national protectionism, but all about being one world with economic strengths in certain industry sectors getting pernanently redistributed.

I'm an electronics manufacturing engineer for the past 40 years. I built the initial SMT capacity for Dolby Labs. I've worked in defense and in contract manufacturing. Now I work in consumer electronics and most of my job is dealing with factories in China. While there are some that will cut every corner, there are others that make me cry for the quality of infrastructure that they have. In my CM life in Silicon Valley it was like pulling teeth to upgrade equipment and technical capability. The better factories in China have all the latest stuff and are building the highest tech products at amazing yields. Much of the technical white papers on metallurgy and reliability are coming out of Chinese engineers and scientists. Their ability to make precision tooling and scale up a production line in a matter of weeks astounds me compared to what I can do here. As you say, it's all about the goals of the company. Are they in a race to the bottom or the top?
@GodmanchesterGoblin
@GodmanchesterGoblin 3 года назад
Exactly this. I have also worked with a few Chinese electronics factories over many years. The good ones survive and are worth working with, and they will bend over backwards to deliver a good product. If you want better quality, they can do that too - sometimes it costs, sometimes they will do it just for the pride of doing it, and to know that you will come back next year for more. The only reason *some* Chinese made goods are so poor is because brands or retailers want to sell cheaper than their competitor, and the consumer is too easily persuaded by lower prices.

Man, Paul. Thanks for touching on the subject the way you did. Us Western Europeans have a lot of prejudices about the USA. And many of them are unfortunately often confirmed. But if we weren't able to put those aside and look at every case separately, I wouldn't be listening to an Ayre preamp and Martin Logan speakers now. And the same goes for all other audio, wherever it comes from. If you have the chance, listen first, then ask questions. Come to think of it; Remember the Boston Acoustics A25? Great little speaker at, I believe, 160usd per pair. Designed in the USA, built in China. The logo stickers are falling off. Other than that a great little product. I think people also often forget that they tend to overpay for stuff because of the name. Look at the 'suckers' buying Sonos these days. Like it's the best thing since sliced bread. Paying four, five, six times more than better sounding equivalents. Doesn't happen with Chinese products, yet. And there's cool initiatives like Schiit Audio of course, where you get properly designed audio for a fraction of the price. And you see that people have a hard time taking it seriously, because it's cheap. Their loss ;).

Genocide, imprisonment, organ harvesting of prisoners, usually prisoners of conscience, and the government has their totalitarian hand in ever facet of business. Hong Kong. Now possibly Taiwan. I know I can't avoid buying items from China, but where I can, I choose not to. It has nothing to do with race. Luce, your points needs to be clarified. 1. China has a far higher investment in renewable energy than any other country in the world. They are building massive solar, wind farms and nuclear to replace fossil fuels. Pollution levels in China today are far LOWER than they were ten years ago. The U.S. is the world's #1 polluter per capita. No country outputs more pollution per person than Americans. 2. China's govt started an anti-corruption campaign under Xi Jinping that has cut corruption levels substantially, with far more transparent rule than before. Companies must receive multiple bids for projects, gifts are strictly forbidden, corrupt govt officials are often put in jail and even the death sentence. Whereas, in the United States, the billionaires that screwed everybody were let off by Obama and given more billions in bailout money so they could continue making themselves even bigger billionaires while U.S. wages for the lower/ middle class remain FLAT for 25 years. So, I hope this update is helpful. Best, Mario

Chinese manufacturing and technological expertise is fine. Chinese culture, namely their immoral, unethical, authoritarian government is far from fine. Economics for me comes down to much more than "finding the cheapest price." It's about promoting and encouraging human flourishing of those who promote the flourishing of other humans. The CCP is shameful. I'm fine with having trading partners the world over. But China, Russia, and many countries in Asia, Africa, and The Middle East won't be getting my money if I can help it. Some in China have hurt their reputation by stealing tech, using components and labor that are too cheap, and having poor quality control. Unfortunately, this is a lot of what is seen in the US. @thunderpooch 3 года назад
@@timothymitchell7250 Honestly, I don't give a rat's behind about "technological theft." Once something hits the market, most of it can be reverse engineered. Every company and country the world over learns from what other companies do. And it's naive to think western countries and their companies aren't trying to send in people to download research and development files from their competitors. My problem with China is their lack of human rights being codified in a constutution. I also have a problem with their treatment of animals and the environment. The US is by no means a bunch of saints, but China in comparison makes them appear so. And that's a sad and pathetic reality. So where I can, I'd much rather buy from companies who do more of their manufacturing and part sourcing with America, Canada, and Western Europe. Chinese products are getting good, there's a lot to learn from any country or company's engineering, and Americans should be humbled by their skill and ability to progress.. But with respect, it's different from the racist Japan-bashing here. China is a communist dictatorship. People and especially businesses should be thinking hard on whether they want to do business with companies that are directly controlled by a government that doesn't support their people's own basic freedoms, and have a track record of extreme human rights abuses against political dissidents and minority populations. Their companies aren't structured like the classic Anglo/American LLC, they are ultimately in the service of their military dictator. Japan has realized this and started to dump huge amounts of cash into companies who retreat from manufacturing in China (even if they don't return to Japan). They know they're up against a dangerous burgeoning force. I have only the best wishes for the Chinese people, but such economic decisions and global trade aren't always about *xenophobia. It's about what's right.

Well the audio may be good quality but I worked in a repair shop and the TVs and vcr are cheaply made compared to the American made units. In the old days a repair shop charged $125 to service a vcr and we could make a profit. These older models were built to last a long time. Later on we lowered our price to $35 to service a vcr because the cost of a new one was so cheap.

I am an expatriate in China. People outside of China always thought the Chinese have a tyranny government. It’s not, it’s just a different system from ours. Any citizen in China can work for the government and be part of the government, and any citizen has be an entrepreneur like Jack Ma and become a billionaire. Living in China is no different than my country, Singapore, or Los Angeles or Sydney. Western media has painted a wrong picture of China through and through.

I’m all for buying products based on quality AND value. If those products are made in the US, or the EU, or China, that’s fine. I own audio equipment made in all those places. I do expect, however, that the companies I do business with pay living wages, adhere to environmental standards in their manufacturing processes, and don’t engage in intellectual property theft. While I agree, Paul, that nationalism can quickly become dangerous, it is more than reasonable to ask the tough questions of those with whom the US has trade relationships. I’m speaking about governments and corporations, not individuals who happen to be from those nations!

@Fat Rat Bingo! China and all their crap is crap because of their lack of ethics and values. Sure their gadgets and products work just fine and are often extremely advanced. But economics is about far more than finding the cheapest price. Economics should be about wanting to support people who are moral and decent. I'd rather give my money to Denmark over China any day. And if I can only afford a Chinese product, I'd rather not have it. Culture and value promotion is far more important to me than owning stuff.
@thunderpooch
@thunderpooch 3 года назад
@Fat Rat I do fear though that the bad people have been in power far too long. Pathologies do get promoted in a society because the good and decent people find it harder and harder to thrive and subsequently reproduce. If John Wayne Gacy had become supreme dictator over America, it would have had biological and neurological consequences, no doubt. Empathy can be compared from generation to generation, and it matters what leaders are doing to shape the culture. If they're cruel, the cruel among society do better and have more resources and then are able to have more children. People like to pretend this can't occur, but every dog breeder or horse breeder knows the obvious. Temperaments and personalities are passed down at a ratio far higher than what a random outcome would produce. So yes, it matters when people economically support fascists or totalitarian communists.

I couldn't have said it better myself. I absolutely agree with you 100%. This hate towards one another needs to stop. We all have our own problems, and we are all doing the best we can with what we have available to us. We all have feelings. We need to set aside our differences and look at what we all have in common. I am an American but not of America in the sense of the hate and outright abominable behavior of some of my fellow Americans. We more now than ever should be spreading love, peace, and happiness to all. Time's are tough for everyone ( some more than others) and the outright disrespect some people show towards one another is appalling. I buy good products regardless of where they are from. in fact I own an xduoo xd-05 portable dac/amp. I look forward to buying more from them, and hopefully one day from you as well at ps audio.

I live in Thailand and I buy a lot of things relative cheap from China. In my experience a big problem is that it's difficult to trust companies over there. I.e. one big online shop is the official distributor for some good brand names and they sell the real thing. But in the same shop are also lots of fake products which are advertised as if they are the real thing - maybe even with pictures from the original product. And then when people buy things they might find out that they received bad copies. And then they complain and what happens? Nothing. And that is a problem because it makes it difficult to trust those companies. Obviously scams and low quality happen not only in Asia or China. But it seems many Chinese companies get away with bad business which wouldn't be allowed to go on for many years in other parts of the world.

I was searching for speakers to partner my Accuphase E370. I listened to many brands from the usual suspects - B&W, Harbeth, PMC, etc. I was not really impressed with any of them (maybe the PMCs were the best of the bunch) when one of the HiFi dealers suggested "I will play you a pair of speakers as a blind audition. I will not tell you the brand, just listen." Then what I heard just blew me away. It turned out to be a pair of Aurum Cantus Volta Mk II. They were made of solid lacquered wood, looked great, sounded fantastic and cost about a half of the price of speakers from mainstream brands with similar quality. Of course, I bought them and I have been extremely happy with them (I paired them with a REL T9i subwoofer). It turns out that Aurum Cantus supply drivers to many big companies. The Voltas have a 15 cm tweeter and the highs are just fantastic. The moral is: the correlation between country of origin and quality is only in our minds. As Paul says, simply trust your ears!

The quality of sound this amp offers, can be easily compared and be on par with many similar _name_ products, that sell for 3 or 4 time its price. Also, the build quality leaves nothing to complain about! It looks, feels, and sounds like a so called, 'high end' western product. And, for all intends and purposes, IT IS a high end product, even when, Stereophile does not ever mention its existence... Would they do (mention it) if Yaqin bought a couple of pages for advertising?

Paul, you're a good man - I really admire you for putting into words what many decent HiFi enthusiasts are thinking. I got in a lot of trouble on WhatsBest forum for daring to contradict the prevailing mindset that all Chinese HiFi was "knock off fakes" or "cheap tat" etc etc. I even ventured the notion that the attitude was close to racism, I also used the analogy of how the US and UK once regarded Japanese products. You're right, it's a very similar thing. What I'd like to see is more reviews of Chinese HiFi so that consumers can get a better idea of what's what. RU-vid aside, most of the HiFi press still seems to have a vested interest in promoting domestic brands that they have a relationship with - that's fair enough, it's quite natural. But I've noticed that there are some worrying trends in the high-end part of the industry. Some people are even talking about the "hifi mafia". It's a risky game, at present there are people in the west who have enormous wealth, but while only the very wealthy can afford the very best HiFI, it needs to be remembered that there's no correlation between wealth and the passion somebody might have for music. One day, I've a feeling the true nature of the open market and real competition will catch up with the sort of high-end brands that charge £1500 for a single tungsten support pod. We have a boutique brand in the UK which sells extension blocks and mains cables - their products are well reviewed and their prices are sort of midway, not astronomic, but still about 4 times more than the Chinese versions. However their accompanying blurb really lets the cat out of the bag, not only making absurd claims but also falling well short of what you and I would accept as coherent use of the English language. They state all their products are manufactured in the UK - not so, all they're doing is importing from China and adding branded shrinks etc. That's okay, but for goodness sake be honest about it. One recent hilarity is their claim that there's an "erogenous" back order for their latest product. Sounds embarrassing! Meanwhile many older UK HiFi brands are being resurrected, taking their new high tech designs to China, having their products manufactured there. Result - great equipment at prices more people are able to afford. And these brands are honest about it. I think that's good. You're in the industry, I'm sure you know there are dozens of UK brands doing this now, the majority I would say.
