Are Democrats Whistling Past the Graveyard?

A New York Times and Siena College poll released Nov. 5 showed Donald Trump leading Joe Biden in five of the six key swing states, with a notable jump in support among nonwhite and young voters. In response, Democrats freaked out.
But then two days later, voters across the country actually went to the polls, and Democrats and Democratic-associated policy did pretty well. In Kentucky, Andy Beshear held the governorship. Democrats took back the House of Delegates in Virginia. And Ohio voted for an amendment protecting abortion rights.
I asked Mike Podhorzer, a longtime poll skeptic, to help me understand the apparent gap between the polls and the ballot box. Podhorzer was the longtime political director of the A.F.L.-C.I.O. And as the founder of the Analyst Institute, he was the godfather of the data-driven turn in Democratic campaign strategy. He also writes a newsletter on these topics called “Weekend Reading (www.weekendreading.net/?...) .”
We discuss the underlying assumptions behind polling methodologies and what that says about their results; how to square Biden’s unpopularity with the Democrats’ recent wins; why he thinks an anti-MAGA majority is Biden’s best bet to the White House and how that coalition doesn’t always map cleanly onto demographic data; what a newly energized labor movement might means for Biden; and much more.

Issues confronting this country (and world) are not well-addressed by the current body politic. That body includes all those now being polled. The 2024 electoral cycle will only fundamentally shift if a large group of unsampled potential voters actually vote...

Even as an atheist I feel like the "christian values" that underpinned American society in a very real way have kind of disintegrated. It feels like living in Babylon sometimes. Rampant hedonism, selfish individualism, greed, open air drug markets, extremely explicit parades and public indecency, mass looting, unpunished criminality, collapse of the education system, kids at Harvard public signing a letter justifying one of the worst crimes against humanity in modern history.

I live in Germany and as someone who doesn't live in the US it seemed to me, besides the media coverage and their obsession with Trump, that the US was in a better shape than under the current administration!? Low numbers of illegal migration, a pretty strong economy, low unemployment rates, good relations with countries that were usually considered as their enemies,etc. How did you perceive Trump's presidency back then, compared to Biden's presidency? I'm just curious. Don't get me wrong please, Trump is as equally hated over here in Germany as in the U.S I guess. It's difficult to compare both presidents, when there is a stark contrast between the media coverage of Trump and Biden.

Anyone that has a union probably doesn’t need one. Anyone that needs a union is legislated from getting one like 10 years ago. We need to individually push labor standards in higher levels of government rather than protecting or attacking unions

No, both sides aren't "a bad choice." One side is dangerous, while the other is just "not doing what I want" or "too old" (Truth: both were in high school at same time, 3 yrs apart). ONE is an authoritarian who will use vengeance, who stops free speech, his people plan to create Concentration CAMPS to hold people he hates, who is today trying to destroy our Law & Order & Courts system, commits crimes. The OTHER HAS helped Americans, is ensuring the world isn't taken over by psychopath dictators, who HAS kept our economy stronger than all top nations despite Covid-caused & Ukraine-war-caused worldwide economic recession. Looking at things as "both sides" is way too simplistic -- this view requires ignoring too many facts -- it's frankly just wrong.

How come you didn’t bring up Biden’s declining mental acuity? He already looks pathetic . I think they’re not going to let him campaign. He will just get worse month by month, not to mention the coming 5 years. He’s even having trouble walking. I’d say it’s a national crisis waiting to happen

@keep-ukraine-free
@keep-ukraine-free 7 месяцев назад
People love to think "my issue is the most important." The age of both candidates being "too old" DOES NOT MATTER. The real issue is THE THREAT - trump's people are talking about creating CONCENTRATION CAMPS to put democrats into. The fact is, only candidates who get votes in Southern states become president. No progressive will get votes in the south. ONLY A MODERATE CAN DEFEAT trump - so to save our country, we all need to vote for Biden 💙. There's no other choice now.

MAGA, abortion, and Coup/anti-Democracy are FAR bigger issues to most people than whether Dems give a choice of candidate (when we have an incumbent)

You have a very low opinion of voters. Biden projects- Willingness to serve the people. Trump projects- Willingness to only serve himself. If you haven't joined the MAGA cult this delineation is very clear. That is what we saw in 2020 when Biden earned more votes than any other Presidential candidate in history. Like Joe, I am not ready to bet against Americans.

I hate politics. But we are obligated to vote. I voté reliably national Democratic. But I have a strong sympathy for Christian Rights beliefs. I k have a strong disapproval of moral laxity. if given a chance to vote on a single Issue would support money or time to focus on the social issue. I have a strong sympathy for racial and s few other minority rights, except foR a couple…of groups.
@user-vz7nm8cc2v
@user-vz7nm8cc2v 7 месяцев назад
From my perspective, the Christian Right is emblematic of moral laxity. They project moral certainty while supporting a Candidate like Trump who has no moral center and destroys any semblance of mutuality among the population. The GOP from all appearances has jettisoned all their former policies and principles for a politics of anger and destruction aimed at our essential institutions. What aspects of the Christian Right do you support?

how about some balance ? maybe bring on IMCs (independents, moderates, centrists) vs. just Dem hacks, thinkers, etc.. NYT has become a Dem media shop.. this is why I canceled my subscription after 30yrs.. it always leaned left but has gone full left, Dem media shop. I read more specialist journals, local papers, substacks, WSJ(non-opinion sections), youtube channels DW, France-24, BBC, etc.. feel way better then NYT..
