Do ghosts exist? How about demons? The supernatural in general? Whether or not you are skeptical of the concepts, these questions themselves, are fascinating ones that have stirred up many heated debates over the centuries. Ryan and Shane from Buzzfeed’s Unsolved, have dedicated their time and energy to creating engaging, supernatural content, our question is, is it real? Are they lying to us, or is what they are showing the truth. Perhaps their nonverbal communication will be revealing as their body language shows us what they are really feeling.

I'd love to see what you think of Ryan and Shane in a later episode. Maybe even the newest one where they went to The Conjuring house? That way you can see how much Ryan, in particular, has changed. Also, if you want to see Ryan acting, I'd reccomend searching for his and Shane's cameo on S.W.A.T.

I use to jump at any sound as a kid, even had trouble sleeping in the dark in my early 20s because I was super indoctrinated. Once I heard about what atheism is and no longer a christian, you could strap me to a gurney in the middle of a cornfield, inside an abandoned mental asylum and sleep like a baby. Some fun bts stuff from the Sallie House episode filming: - At one point (after the flashlight scene), Ryan ran out of the house with full intent to leave and abandon the video. Shane went out and calmed him down. With knowledge of Ryan’s anxiety he might have truly had a panic attack after that scene. After calming him down, they obviously carried on filming. - While exploring the house Shane thought it would be funny to move a Bible he found from the shelf to the centre of the room to scare Ryan, but realised that Ryan was scared enough with everything else going on that he owned up to moving the Bible as a prank almost immediately because he felt bad.

I love how the second Megan came on screen his own body language totally changed! I believe those flashlights they bring with them are unscrewed a bit-they’re supposed to be easily manipulated/blink on and off. So Shane’s probably not controlling it, he just believes it’s coincidental, whereas Ryan is reading into the timing of the blinks and how they align with what Shane is saying

@Dom Koyuki Only some of the time tbh. Which is total coincidence. If the torch turns on/off in the ten seconds after they've asked a question that doesn't mean it's the ghost doing it, just means those types of torches turn on/off at random and it randomly happened at that time.

i've been watching ryan & shane for YEARS & let me tell you, shane is absolutely insane. he does not fear anything 💀 before something has happened, he's already rationalised it in his head, which is why he hardly has any reaction to what happens other than reacting to ryan's reaction 💀 ryan on the other hand gets scared at the tiniest sound (although he's become more brave recently) love both of them, they always give me a good laugh :)))

I think I recall Shane once admitting that he's actually pretty afraid of a lot of things, but because he doesn't believe in ghosts or demons, he can rationalise it and display no fear, since in his mind there's nothing to be afraid of.

For anyone who is not familiar with Buzzfeed Unsolved, 9:50 when Shane is laughing and Ryan is screaming is basically a good summary of what the show is like. They've changed a little bit through the years, Ryan is definitely a lot braver but this is still part of the vibe.

I was thinking the exact same thing. It's been a while since I watched these early episodes and I forgot about how intense some of Ryan's reactions were. Of course he's still scared, but I think the fact that he's still alive after all these investigations has toned down his fear somewhat.

Yeah the flashlight is halfway on and off, so any little breeze or warming of the lens makes it switch. It's just a coincidence it seemed to respond to Shane. No need to fake it, it's just what it is. And oh yes Ryan did have nightmares. He explained in a later Q&A video that he started hearing voices, had nightmares and had to go talk to a priest to get rid of it. I think a piece of his mind just cracked a little in that extreme fear situation :D

ryan probably got followed home, if attached to him. demons do that to people that are weak and fear = weakness. it’s very common that they give nightmares and can hurt you in your sleep. the scariest part is going home alone knowing you’re not actually alone 0.0

Shane and Ryan did a Q&A on their own channel in a haunted house and Ryan knew where all the jump scares were and still jumped. Shane on the other hand ... I don't think he flinched once. That would be cool for you to watch and analyse. Also, Logan & Megan with Shane & Ryan is the collab we need!!

I think Shane being subdued is because he’s often said he just switches off feeling scared when in situations like that. Also their post-mortem q and a has shown that Shane is 100% skeptic to the point of being infuriating.

But that's the thing: he doesn't have any reason to be scared. He just really is a total skeptic and is sure he doesn't have anything to worry about. The only times he's been noticeably unsettled were when they thought homeless people broke into the site during an investigation or that time he ate some bad Taco Bell before the shoot and his intestines were in revolt.

Even as a skeptic I would get unnerved by the places they go. I mean, I get unnerved in my own house at night, just because it's a fairly natural human instinct to be afraid in the dark... let alone in the dark in an unfamiliar or even abandoned building that could, at the very least, have gross shit like spiders and bats. I definitely think Shane has a unique ability to shut off that part of his emotions and be Supernaturally Chill.

Just to add to the constant little smile that Ryan has on a lot in this episode, I think it's also because he's really comfortable with Shane. You know when you're terrified enough to want to poop but your bestie is in the room so you know if you die, you'll at least die with your bestie? XD I think that helps him a lot, which is why he veers on laughing/panic whenever he's with Shane throughout the entire series. He's much different in moments he has to explore spaces alone, so it'd be fun to watch you observe that if you're feeling up to it in the future!

I just want to mention how much I appreciate you editing things out while encouraging your viewers to go watch the original content. Not only is it courteous to your fellow youtubers but it also trains your viewers to always go to the original source. So much of the dark side of the internet is caused because folks had knee jerk reactions without consulting the original source.

you have to keep in mind Shane keeps Ryan distracted from the fear by pissing him off on how much ununbeliever he is so they are a great match, also that colab.... would love to have Logan doing a post recording with the team trying to read a psychic or victim speech and expressions, both while there and the after recordings would be so interesting

I’ve done paranormal investigations, and unfortunately, the flashlight is a trick, done by unscrewing the flashlight while it’s on ever so slightly until the battery disconnects, but due to reactions from the heat and springs, it does make connection again and turns on, then turns back off and on as long as you like. The trick is find out on average how long the reaction takes and use filler material and questions for the spirits between cycles, and ask the spirit to do the next “on” or “off” as a “yes” or “no.” I know the producers knew this and maybe they didn’t let Ryan and Shane in on this, it is good for the camera, though.

Shane talks about this in a couple of post mortems when he and Ryan are arguing about the flashlight legitimacy. They knew that it was a trick, but Ryan still believes it's evidence because the flashlight needs "a little nudge" from the ghost to turn on or off. Imo, that doesn't make a lot of sense but he seems to believe it.

I don't think they are knowingly using it as a trick but it is intentionally calibrated in a way that it will randomly turn on and off by itself to make it easy for ghosts to influence it or whatever. Like the voice box thing they use in later seasons it's just a random noise generator and it's easy with human memory selection bias to convince yourself that it always turns on in response to questions when it's actually just random.

I have too, and I know they adjust the flashlight to be on the border of on and off to theoretically make it easier for ghosts to manipulate, but I’ve never seen an instance where there’s been a reliable pattern in the time between modes where someone could strategically time their questions. I feel like that would be a pretty easy thing to figure out. I’m not convinced by flashlights, but I’m not convinced there’s nothing to them either.

They are 100% genuine. I definitely recommend watching some post mortem episodes for future unsolved eps. Also, Ryan stated that he's pretty certain a ghost or demon followed him home after the Sallie house, because he was hearing voices and he went to a church to get blessed and that got rid of them. So I would definitely think Ryan was being genuine lol

Check out their own venture separate from Buzzfeed as well: Watcher. They have a similar show on there called "Are you scared" reading creepypastas and Shane being his glorious irreverent self. The Unsolved True Crime had its last season this year and the final supernatural season is airing atm, but they're not really allowed to promote their own channel much.

This is the only episode where the flashlights have worked so well, so imo the medium they had on the show brought those flashlights and was controlling it. When Ryan and Shane use their own in subsequent eps, it's never happened again.

I think the pastor shaking his head no and shrugging is a reaction to his moral thoughts about satanic cults and rituals that he was talking about. what i noticed at 21:37 is that while Rryan is describing his fear, Shane raises a arm alsmot to stop him from that train of thought and as Ryan continues a look of almost regreat/reluctance passes Shanes face. I think this is because at one point Ryan says, during a Q&A much later (I can't remember the video) that he almost had a panic attack and was going to flat out leave before they finished the investigation. Shane was the one who calmed him down and convinced him to stay. Shane probably didn't want him to sprial again and freak out. this fact alone makes Ryans fear -- and their friendship very geninue to me and a reason i love them so much. they care for one another and aren't just business partners, where all their interactions feel kind of flat and forced like in some other ghost shows I've seen.

A little info on the flashlight they use to “communicate”. It’s a very sensitive one where you twist the top to turn it on or off. So for these things they leave just at the edge of off and on allowing ghosts or demons to gently push or pull it to switch it the other way. Or just wind drafts or whatever other normal things. Which is why Ryan who believes is freaking out. And Shane who knows it’s all normal worldly interactions doing it is totally chill about it.

Hi, Logan and Megan. I can give you a little more data on Ryan & Shane's interactions, as well as the flashlight, since I'm a longtime fan of the series. Ryan and Shane are genuine friends, and Shane is usually very kind to Ryan (as in moving his leg aside when Ryan lay down), though he does sometimes tease him. As for the flashlight, they use one or even two flashlights in most episodes following this one, and eventually they both admit that the flashlights are prone to turning on and off just because they're unpredictable gadgets. So I don't think there's any trickery involved in the flashlight turning on and off when it did in the Sallie House; I think that was just the first time they'd used one...unless this one came from the "psychic" and *he* was controlling it!

The thing with the flashlight is that it's a maglite with the head turned to be almost completely off so that any touch should turn it on or off. The theory is that ghosts can then touch the light and prove they're there... the problem is that it doesn't actually have to be touched - When the light is on, it heats up, parts start to expand, turns it on/off, once off it cools, parts start to contract, turns it on/off. In other words, it will do it by itself and ghosts are not required. But it's good visually so ghost hunting shows use it.

I’ve never seen one of these, I typically stay clear of anything connected to Buzzfeed, but this may have changed my mind. I’ve gone on several “ghost hunts” and stayed overnight in a “haunted” forest with less skeptical friends and can say that Shane is definitely my spirit animal. 🤣😂🤣

Definitely watch. As long as you don't mind some irreverence, I think it's got enough evidence for believers and enough callouts and well, skepticism for skeptics. Note the current format of the Supernatural videos starts with the episode featured in this video, and their True Crime series takes form around the Zodiac Killer episode or the Sodder Children episode.

omg I love that button down! also I love this sm. the things people can tell just from the littlest body movement is fascinating. I mean, most people can tell body language in general, but microexpressions and little soothing gestures and nervous fiddling is something I wouldn't necessarily pick up on, personally.
