I've always had some respect for Donner. For being as cheap as they are, every one I've played has been bloody amazing. Greetings and well wishes from Utah man!
I bought this exact guitar from Trogly about a month after this video. I replaced the tuners with Classic Vibe Tele tuners. All of my other guitars are 2X to 4X more expensive. This one holds it's own pretty well. I was never interested in Telecasters. But this one gives me one that feels, sounds and plays great. I've also bought a looper and delay pedal from Donner. I'm very impressed and satisfied with their products I have. Love this channel. Bought T-shirts from it and the guitar. For Trogly to put out daily content I'm glad to support him!😀
That little push he does with the box says everything you need to know, at the same time I would absolutely buy one. This really is a gem of a channel. Hope we get to see the crestwood, Coronet, Wilshire combo one of these days.
@@danielktdoran it has an F hole and its a quality made instrument. Trogs even said it has some flame maple depending on the viewing angle. The fair market value for it should be around $4k USD.
@@danielktdoran Yes….It increases the “sweet sweet sound resonance” while you bend the notes to your “heart’s content” . This raises the fair market value considerably.
@@PopeyeFPV The fact you think the fair market value for this Donner should be 4k tells me everything I need to know about your perception of guitar value. The current asking price of this guitar is its fair market value....nothing more. It's a sub 200 guitar and it shows. Ive handled two of these in our guitar shop. It was absolutely horrible or should I say a train wreck. Im willing to bet the guitar Trogly has is not representative of the majority.
I got a Donner Black Tele during Prime Day for less than $100. They are definitely punching above their weight. If you want to mod it, it's a great platform, out of the box do a little setup work and you've got an inexpensive guitar with limitless possibilities. Enjoy your content and appreciate your in depth look at guitars.
Right now, 4PM Pacific Time, they have the SOLID body Donner Tele on sale for Prime Day, when you add the coupon discount offered, it's selling for $87.99, with the gig bag and all the rest. You've got 7 1/2 hours left to get it.
I am so happy that from when I started playing guitar in the late 90s you can get a good quality instrument for low prices if ya look in the right places
I recently purchased one of these guitars, and I am beyond impressed with the quality it! It is a helluva value, and I would say it is comparable to the MIM Fenders. The one I received needed nothing done to it straight out of the box, and plays beautifully. It actually feels like playing with my old early '70s Tele Thinline. I personally really love the middle position. It is a beautiful balance between the two pups. Smooth and dark, with just the right amount of bite. It has quickly become one of my favorite guitars! Thank you for the excellent review!
I bought one of these directly from Donner and for the price, they are phenomenal. Great sounding pick ups, great feeling neck. Great for slide playing. Now I have 1 more to add to my collection that is over 60. Gibson, fenders, epiphone, slick, firefly, hard luck kings, Squier, agile, harley benton and more.
@@benallmark9671 I've got a few that are great guitars that were under $200. A snake head telecaster, a no name es335 style that i converted to an Alvin Lee tribute guitar, a Harley benton flying V, a King brand single p90 at the bridge gold top, a Jay Turser Ckeopatra semi hollow, a firefly double cut p90s les paul special style, a couple of telecasters built from parts from guitar fedish. They have a deal on the 335 style guitar that I made into the Alvin Lee tribute. I actually have 2.
@@ExplodingPsyche agile makes great guitars. I've got a les paul style with p90s that's fantastic. I bought it as a blem. A small scratch on the neck pickup cavity. Can't even see it. Slick telecaster are great playing guitars. I've got a SL60 too. I cover over the slick logo with black electric tape. Looks better.
Real nice video ... The guitar actually impressed me for the price ... Either way it was a nice change of pace from all the Gibson, Gibson, Gibson ....
An “ok guitar” and the “best amp you can afford” - 110% correct. A good amp will make an average guitar so much better. Of course find the type of amp that works for you too. I always considered myself a Fender amp kinda guy (if there is such a thing). And now my go to amp is based on a modified Marshall. I fell in love with it the moment I plugged into it having tried several other high end amps prior that were more “Fendery”. It just worked for me. Find out what works for you.
Would love to see you review a harley benton model! They're fantastic for the money, and its always good to see you look at more budget-friendly guitars. Love the content!
Just ordered one- got it for $117, WHAAATT!??!. I'll let you know if it ever comes in!...UPDATE!!!UPDATE!!!UPDATE!!!...I got mine in today(6-30). First, I have to tell you, this is the first time I've ever bought a guitar before I played it, the first time I've ordered a guitar online. I was a little sceptical to pull the trigger on this one, but for $117, I took a chance. I own a lot of guitars, from $129 Bullet Tele to a Gibson Les Paul. So I'm not a brand snob at all. I have to say that I really do like this guitar! The pickups are good. The neck is good. It's super light. No fret sprout at all! I'm more than pleased with my purchase, and I've been playing it all afternoon. I'll change the strings and lower the action just a hair, but other than that, I'm gonna keep it just like it is, no mods. Good call on this one Trog! Thanks for putting me on to this good little guitar!
Also Austin, skunks stripes aren't exclusive to the existence of truss rod insertion area. My Fender Teles that have rosewood fingerboards also have skunk stripes on back. It's more so just one of Fender's aesthetic choices.
There are even maple necks without skunk stripe. They use separate maple fingerboard. It really depends when the neck was made for the originals and what they've chosen to emulate in current production.
thanks for the look and review. I picked one of these up on the prime deal and i had a few amazon pts so scored it for like 99 bucks. I plan to noodle around on it and maybe practice my guitar setup skills on a more affordable guitar.
This is the art of creating budget guitars. knowing where to trim the dollars, but also knowing enough to pay attention to the sound and using good sounding pickups. if it doesn't sound good nobody will want it and it wont succeed in sales. decent tuners are tricky for the pricing but it needs to stay in tune. the plies of wood seem durable enough and I don't expect a player to try and use this for 20 years, but it will probably build lots of character over time anyway. lets imagine how it might age over it's high end distant cousins of the west, it could surprise us.
Same here. I actually like it more than I thought I would, and it plays better than guitars that cost a whole lot more! Personally, I love the neck! It has a very comfortable '60s Fender feel.
I got a tele copy from Donner in white, absolutely love it. Not everyone can afford a Fender or a Gibson, also, not everyone wants one either. For the price, I can't see how anyone can complain. The guitar is way better than I will ever be & I am very happy with my purchase. 😎👍
Allen Goodman: well im sure most of us would love to have an American made guitar, but since most people can't afford them these days, you pretty much get the best guitar you can afford to get without over spending. the closest you can get to American is the Fender Mexican stuff, and even they've gone up in price in recent years ever since the Player series was introduced back in 2018. they used to pretty affordable back in the day, i actually have one MIM Fender and I've had it since 2007. got a good deal on it at the time for $399 on a Mexican Standard, and i have this guitar lol. Donner is a fairly new company, but i saw one of these guitars at Walmart. it wasn't this version, but it was alot like this.
The price for a sheet of plywood is well over 50 bucks right now, at least it's not made from fence posts. Still a good deal and a useful review, good advice for someone who is starting out.
I've always been in the thinking of getting a better used guitar.Just off the top of my head get like a EVH Peavey or something for similar price. I am not knocking Donner just my opinion.
as someone who never bought a used guitar in my life, i have to agree with you. I buy cheap stuff because I like to mod the crap out of my guitars to make them more "mine", if it's expensive i'm a little more hesitant to mess around with. But it's deff a good point! I think this one is intended more as a first guitar for someone who's just entering this universe of guitars, or a candidate for a suspiciously trained "luthier" 😬
My gal bought me one of these when I saw this and said I want one after the review. Believe it or not I haven't changed the factory strings in its 14 months of on off playing just because every review counting this wasn't happy with them. My gal also does acrylic pours and I've convinced her to do two pick guards for me but she still hasn't got my Donner but I definitely will put some quality strings and a Super distortion Dimarzio
With so many guitars that wander into our studio the exposure to so many instruments is great, thank you Trogly! We haven't had a Donner show up in here yet however if one does, I'll know more now. Cheers and thanks again!
At 6:52 you mention that sanding the edges would help it look higher end. Meanwhile Suhr, a company that sells 3000U$ guitars, also have the same style on their intruments.
Totally agree on the fretboard end being too squared. But looks pretty good, can't complain at that price. Sounds better to me than some of the high end Fenders you've demoed.
Great review. I wound up getting one on Amazon for $130..I have to say I'm pretty amazed that it plays, and sounds as good as it does. I've already used it to record two tracks over my LP and Schecters..Kind of makes you mad when you realize that high priced guitars aren't such a difference anymore, but hopefully guitars like this will allow people with limited means to get into playing guitar, and not get turned off by poor quality beginner instruments. Bridge pup absolutely shreds!
My Fender American Special Tele came with a gig bag but I told the salesman he'd better throw in a fender hard case or no deal. And he can keep the gig bag. Walked out with exactly what I wanted.
I bought one of these about a year ago and I really like it. The only complaint I have is the split-shaft tuners. The holes weren't deep enough, especially on the 6th string. I couldn't get the end to stay in the hole enough to tighten the string. Easy fix with a new set of tuners. I'm not really crazy about the bridge saddles either, so maybe I'll change them too.
@@Trog Oh I know....RSL has become kind of " Ive made it" as a youtuber thing. Is it true that next week you'll be reviewing the Eart guitar line? Love the show and Father's Day LP addition was great. Do that each year!
Sold out in America and Canada, but available in Asia. Got for about 180 USD bucks. Kind of over price since the wholesale cost in lots of 300 from the factory ( comparable guitars ) are about. Drop a reply and I 'll post my connection in China.
Trog your reputation is based on honesty you are very honest plz plz plz don't start selling out because you have a huge mortgage now it's a donner it sounded like shit coming threw my Bose system plz don't start getting nervous and selling out to dinner
So this Donner Tele seems the perfect budget guitar except for the large chips of wood caused by drilling every tuner hole sloppily, now held down by a little poly and tuner washers, but will pop up soon as you back the washers off? Would have been great if Trogly pulled the tuners off to see if any chips would pop up. Oh well, grab some wood filler but it won't look as pretty.
With all the sub-200 dollar guitars that are decent, I just can never decide if I want three of them or maybe hold out for something in the $5-600 range instead. G&L Tributes seem mighty nice.
Okay, this Donner Tele or the Donner Les Paul, it’s come down to those two and a Epiphone SG Special. I’m looking for something different and I don’t have a Tele or a Les Paul or SG, eventually I will get them all but want something cheap and fun to play with at the moment
Shred Monster!! Ended that G string. Maybe the saddles need filed from sharp edges. Not bad for entry level, as long as fret ends are not stealing flesh, good to go. Ü
If you want cheap but decent guitar buy a Monoprice Indio guitar. I have 5. You won't be amazed but also they don't suck. Their tube amps are also good. Likely they use the same manufacturer as Harley Benton.
Don't know what you do in your off time Austin but don't knock your play skills. You've been continually surprising me when you do a demo. Just want to know if your deluxe reverb is a reissue or an actual 65. I have a true 65 and love the hell out of it.
"I played it so hard, I lost my G-string"... I could never play in a G-string...I wouldn't be able to concentrate. (".) But seriously, thanks for this review. Someone here has a brand new one in the box for sale at $80 AUD under its' new price. Soon to be mine.
I really wish you would try picking up a IYV Thinline tele you will be surprised on how high-quality they are at a great budget price of $144 granted it does not come with a case for a guitar chord just your adjustment tools however I think you would love it you can pick them up at Amazon
I wish there were guitars of this quality when I started playing 20+ years ago. My first guitar was a cheap Washburn HSS S-style guitar. The fit and finish of my guitar was nowhere near this level.
December22/22 and deadly cold out here in Saskatchewan. I'm a sucker for cheap guitars because of their potential. Making them terrific is my hobby. This Donner is giving me terrible g.a.s. $219 Cdn delivered in January. And then you go and make it sound so FINE. I trust your reviews so I guess what I'm going to have to do here is sell 1 or 2 of my "inventory" and buy this Donner cuz I have never had a thinline guitar. Not fair. Thanks for helping me convince myself to go ahead with this. Selling 2 to buy 1 leaves me feeling vindicated. I like your show.
Update. The DJC 1000S thinline I ordered arrived in only 2 weeks in regular mail. 4 short pieces of clear packing tape held the top of an extremely low grade, soft cardboard box to the box bottom. Box SEVERELY damaged. Guitar within a decent gig bag was free floating inside box. No extra "stuffing" to immobilize. Guitar has severe crack in finish only, extending from neck pocket down back of body 4 inches. Otherwise perfect. So here we go with return/replace routine. I dint even remove the paper from the strings to try it out.
I picked one of these up last year, and my only complaint so far has been the pain in the nickers it is to put on new strings. lol I hate those tuners with a passion 🙂
