Imo ebikes are ugly and are for lazy people :[ if you want to be fast you can buy a sporty fastbike which will make you feel much better afterwards! And giving you a little workout everyday. Not to mention the battery waste which just increases all the waste/badlabour/scarcity we got from electric cars now. You look sportier then needing to having to use a motor! Also that grandma.. dude just dont care. :) i rather find it stupd seeing young people on an e bike. Looks emberrassing. I enjoy your other videos! Just dont agree with this one.
@@feuerherz007 thats a pretty closed minded way of looking at things, I went from 300 to 260 pounds in the last 4 months, and went from 110 watts average over 30 miles to 190 watts average. Being so over weight it would've been way harder to do that on a normal bike. I prefer a Bosch motor. Aventon isn't a bike company and their stuff is poorly made. I average 147 bpm over that 30 miles.
I fractured my spine and had 3 crush virtabre bones in my back in July 2021, I couldn't feel my legs and walking would hurt my back very much. Last March when I bought my e-bike I had major back pain and I was mainly using the throttle. I live in Victoria BC Canada so throttling is allowed, but then my doctor told me to use the pedal assist to ride and get exercise. So, I use pedal assist 3 and ride about 20 km/hr on average and I ride about a distance of about 25-30 km on daily rides (I rode 8,400 km since last March). Now I DON'T have any back pain and have full mobility of my back and continue to ride. My e-bike still feels New and I still love it so much. Thank You for this video and Ride Safe. 😎❤
Problem with Ebike is thieves!!! you'll really have to make sure you have at least one anti grinder lock and add 2 or 3 more locks plus a 120db alarm. I know, and it's unfortunate that we had to go through all this just to somehow protect our Ebike. I still get anxiety even just parking for 10mins away from my ebike. Even with two Hiplock D1000. 😢😢😢
Thanks for this video, Mike. Though I prefer mid drive ebikes and folding ones, for easier storage (I have a Tern D8, which folds and has smaller wheels, but similar range to your bike), I do love the integrated lights, the great brakes, the ease of carrying stuff, and mostly, the extreme fun factor! You didn't dwell on the fun factor too much, but my personal experience was like "oh, this is how I felt when I was much younger on the bike; this is just pure joy."
Ebikes are great, Aventon are poorly made though. We sold them for a year and I've never had to do so many warranties. I'll stick to actual bike companies when buying an ebike. Been riding a diamondback union 2 for years with zero issues with the bosch motor, and great gear ratios and real 4 piston shimano xt brakes. I say if you can't afford it and have a good bicycle already, slap a bafang kit on it. It will serve you better then an Aventon.
I ride my E-bike all the time when ever I can, love it. Longest ride 28 miles and your butt needs a break. I leave it unattended when I go shop, but it has an alarm with a heavy duty chain/ lock around the frame and smaller chain/lock through the back wheel.
🇬🇧E bikes are so worth it I have been riding ebikes for 22 years and have owned 12 different bikes! When people who have never ridden ebikes say we are lazy or cheats I laugh as I have thousands of friends worldwide some disabled who depend on ebikes to get their independence back! I currently have road and offroad ebikes I traverse 5 miles off-road to work each day and hit the trails at the weekends im subscribed to hundreds of ebike creators and you could say I'm obsessed but I know many others too! If you own an ebike take no notice of negative comments they really don't understand and you will waste your time trying to educate them! There are some amazing bikes on the market but if you can't afford them rent or buy second hand that is the only way you can get on the ebike bandwagon! Once you get bitten by the ebike bug you'll find it is a fascinating pastime! Great Video Mike! 🤘😎🤘
I bought one of these and have ridden to work every day for almost a year now. I live in a hilly area, with somewhat steep grades. I've sold my car, saved thousands, got my health better. My tip: if you're gonna commute everyday, get a bike that makes your trip as easy as possible. There are gonna be days you aren't feeling it. The path of least resistance is important. Also, get a good pannier set to hold your lunch, iPad/laptop, and any other things you bring to work. I HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend switching to ebike commuting. It's changed my life, and I have saved so much money.
Im buying an ebike to replace my car. No more insurance, no more registration, no more oil changes, no more repairs, no more car payments saves me a load of money.
I have a Fiido D2 folding ebike. I modded it and wired in 2 extra batteries in parallel. Strong motor. I have tested it with 4 bags of quick cement on the back and it pulled away easily without peddling. TORQUE is the key with electric.
The 26" ebikes are too big for me. I ride a fat tire folder, with 20" wheels. I'm close to the ground with smaller wheels. I love my new ebike, unfortunately its been raining since I got it. I wont wash it ever, or ride this one in the rain. My ebike stays with me inside my residence.
BEST ADVICE I would like to add to this conversation is AFTER you have FINALLY selected WHAT EVER e-bike that you have chosen AND BEFORE you PAY for whatever one it is GO TO THE BBB website and LOOK UP THE COMPANY track record... whether it’s a model that is popular or not DO NOT get too excited and willing to pay your hard earned money b4 you do this how is there service AFTER they have YOUR MONEY ? I’m in the 1st week of December 2022 my bike arrived October 25th the bike I received had MANY issues that prevented me from riding including a BROKEN LOCK that supposed to hold the rear battery in place it was laying in the bottom of the box , Also the torque arm bolt that goes on the front tire was missing and I STILL have not received that part and it’s now too late to return it , t gf ere where other issues but this are the most serious... This IS one of the more popular e-bikes probably top ten or even top 5 ... I did not bother to look into there issues until after I discovered my problems.... turns out ACCORDING to the Better Business Bureau this company has an ( F ) rating for customer service . Finding this out AFTER giving this company my $ 3,500 . The bike has not been out of my basement at all .. only response so far is to inform me how to remove the rear battery , Not sure WHY it’s taking SO LONG to send the missing torque on bolt . So BE AWARE of the company you select
I've had plenty of exercise on my EU legal 250 Watts cadence sensor cheap ebike, I've just bought it 2 weeks ago, tested it on steepest hill here...oh god, it was harder than expected, my speed was 10kmh and my heart rate 170 BPM...but without help on normal bike, I'd be walking, or rather pushing it.... But for commuting it's perfect...or just exploring town and surroundings...Ebike really makes me wanna go out 😊
I bought a normal bike just for 250 CAD including taxes but i had a worst experience riding it on hilly roads of Toronto. I tried an ebike by renting from Zygg and it was just an awesome experience. Just a level 3 pedal assist was enough for me most of the times. The price difference between a normal bike and ebike is huge but it's worth is what I think if you get one in an offer or just a pedal assist one without throttle which we can get for less money. Renting an ebike instead of spending a lot of money also a good option I think, because we no need to worry about the repairs and maintenance.
better yet bro ... get a cheap aF craigslist or marketplace bike... some used motor and controller on same or ebay... then get a battery ... bam you can get a bike put together for less than you paid bro...
@@animalmake7149 I was going to go that route but then I found the Fucare Gemini. 1300 US with free shipping. It has 2 10.4 ah batteries, hydraulic disc brakes and it came with a nice rack , 2 chargers and lights.
Unfortunately, here in Florida, it is illegal to operate an e-bike (under motor power) on 90% of our rail-trails/greenways/multi-use paths. If you want to ride an e-bike legally, you are pretty much stuck to the road shoulders/bike lanes and some State/National Forests (if you have a Class 1). Usually people get away with riding the rail-trails/multi-use paths by using the pedal-assist and not throttle. If any Karen or E-Cop were to check you out, you simply just shut off the battery/motor and claim you were manually pedaling. It really does not make any sense sticking more cyclists right next to 45mph+ motor traffic when perfectly good greenways exist all over our state. The 40mph+ E-moped crowd is ruining a great thing for everyone. Many beach towns are beginning to ban e-bikes on the beaches as well smh. This has been my main reason for not purchasing an e-bike yet. I really love the Aventon Level.2 and I have decided that this will be the e-bike I go for if/when I do. It is very subtle and looks like any modern bike minus the display and huge down-tube lol. I believe most people wouldn't really give you a second look on this thing unless you were maxing out the throttle without pedaling up a hill. I even have an Aventon affiliate shop/dealer right here in town for service. E-bike laws need to change from these "blanket laws" to ones that single out the 72v, 10kw crowd.
Check this again about Florida. The information I found says e-bikes can be written anywhere that a traditional bike can be ridden. Might be a new law.
Hi Mike, normally enjoy your videos. I think the topic here is way too broad. You are talking about commuter bikes….but in the mountain bike industry its a whole different ball game all together. Two different worlds, so i dont think you can discuss them under one umbrella. Still gave you a thumbs up for nailing the commuter side of things and for tackling an incredibly difficult topic a(s it spans many categories of riding with different use cases for each.)
The biggest problem with ebikes is range and the fact you spend more time charging them than riding them. With mine if i wanna ride fast i can expect to get 15-20 km of range which is nothing or if i wanna ride it like a normal bike and only use the motor for hills i can get 50-60 km.
I have a Heybike and get 32 miles (51km) before I start feeling the battery lag. I ride it close to 20 mi most of the ride. Although it is rather flat. Also charges in 4 to 6 hrs (I don't time it)
I just made a 17 mile loop on the Aventon 1 today. 4000 miles total. It’s well made. I averaged 17 mph with slowdowns for pedestrians and some traffic. Believe me, you can get plenty of good exercise with a cadence sensor.
I’m a bike fitter at a bike shop - I interface the human body (which has terrible quality control) with a bike. I do fittings on e-bikes as well because they can also create injury if the rider position isn’t right. In a normal fitting I have to get the rider to understand that their weight goes on the pedal - rider weight is all forward of the saddle, so it must be supported somewhere on the bike. I can stand for an hour but I can’t do a plank for that long, so getting my weight on my feet and taking it off my hands is a good solution. (If you’re thinking core strength, the fulcrum is the saddle your torso is all on one side, you would need to be attached to your saddle for that to work - good luck with that). On a normal bike weight on the pedals is also how you power the bike. I’ve told my clients that I fit e-bikes as if they were regular bikes… What alarms me about e-bikes is how people ride them. They often require so little effort that e-bike riders tend to sit very upright. It’s less of a workout than they would have you believe, and it’s not weight bearing. A number of staff members at my bike shop have switched to e-bikes, there is a clear health disadvantage over time. You’ve been warned - not that anyone listens to me…
Great video Mike. How does the Aventon Level 2 handle hills? I live in a hilly neighborhood. I don't expect an ebike I purchase to make these hills without pedal assist, but I'm 74. Will I be able to make these hills?
I'm not a fan of any currently produced e-bike. They tend to be ugly, weak, uncomfortable, overpriced, plagued with proprietary tech, incompatible with my DC-powered home, or any combination of these. E-bikes are not worth it until they replace large scooters and small motorcycles and charge directly from the most popular home solar power systems. In order to do this, they need to be 96-volt and each BMS, of the two required, will have to be external so that the halves can be charged at 48 volts. They need a large range of seat and handlebar adjustability. This may mean that the seat post is on a section that is also adjustable and is not a structural part of the bike. If I want to ride sitting upright, it should be possible. If a short person wants to ride the same bike, that should be possible. A failed battery should be user-serviceable. No. E-bikes are not worth it for me.
In the UK we are limited to a paltry 25kmh / 15 mph. Where I live in Scotland the hills are numerous. Without the "assist" I would be unable to go up the most gradual incline I a 75 years of age. Some of the steeper inclines are such that I can get up to 42 mph. One of my bikes was easily modified by re siting the magnet and pickup. giving me 30mph. My bikes get me out and about. I removed this "assist" when I bought a "chip" and easily fitted it myself. Now the speedometer etc work perfectly. I shall now investigate removing the restriction to my rear hub motor.
This e-bike is totally awesome for a seasoned wife trying to keep up with her pro cyclist husband. I know, that's me and my wife! Now she can easily ride 40 miles round trip, while I have to stick to eco mode and paddle along.
For me, as transportation, not so much. But as exercise and to keep my knees working? It's great. Cheaper than a gym or physical therapy and far more interesting. I stick to the budget variety. $1000 or more, not worth it.
If you are buying one as a toy, they are not the worst way to blow money....But practically, they have no value at all, Done the ride the motorcycle thing to work and trust me, Get a car.
Why no mention of no gas and no insurance. Speed is not the major safety problem being ignored by cars is and USA roads designed for cars. Bike laws are designed for thin guys. A bike design is based on 10 to 15 year olds. Light weight design is not for 350 lb person. A electric motor 750wat is great for a 100lb person going up hills but not for a 400lb person. The laws should be by max speed by throttle not by wattage. A lot of people just want a cheaper way to get to work with little exercise.
I got the aventon adventure 2 and the burley nomad cargo trailer. I use my bike for averything including shopping, going to work, going to see family, and going for rides. The burley nomad can’t be locked to my bike because everything on it uses quick releases so I just use the trailer as my shopping cart and leave it at home when I don’t need it.
In the US, you can juste use it for fun. In your neighborhood type of errands, not for work. I’m seriously thinking about getting one but where am I gonna ride it?
I’m really curious if anybody knows if the fatter tires on the Aventon adventure 2 e bikes can fit on a city commute bus rack temporarily to get to a farther location…
I use mine to commute to work when the weather is nice saves on gas or having to stop for it I can use the bike lane and dodge a lot of traffic and be home in six minutes
@@MikeOBrienMedia How long does Aventon say they will continue making batteries for discontinued models? Or will there be an aftermarket option when they do? I am seriously considering the Level.2 but need to know that 5-10yrs from now I will still be able to buy new OEM/Aftermarket parts for it. The industry & tech is changing/updating so fast without many standards in place. $1.7k+ is a lot of money for someone like me. I have that kinda cash once/yr. and only because of child-tax credits/refunds. When the OEM battery eventually cycles-out or something else, I probably won't be able to run out and purchase a new e-bike. I really want to justify this purchase because I can see tons of benefits but this just gave me some serious anxiety!
@@logankeilitz6132I'm in Ireland but looking at getting an e-bike. Two things about my choices. Because I'm almost 6'7 there are only a limited number of manufacturers making bikes in or above the 62 cm frame size so they are almost entirely from the premium brands so I'm not getting anything cheap unfortunately. Unless I buy a conversion kit for my existing hybrid bike. Also there are bike to work schemes almost everywhere in the world now to encourage people to buy new bikes, e-bikes or cargo bikes and get a tax refund. You could look into that if it's available to you. This will take a part of the financial sting out of my eventful purchase. As for a bikes longevity, I ask everywhere about this. Nearly all of the available size options for me have Bosch motors and batteries and I am assured that in ten years time these will still be repairable, replaceable or upgradeable just like parts for a mainstream car. I am very much aware of people who bought bikes from startup manufacturers or generic Chinese imports or built in or unique proprietary parts no longer available that as soon as they ran into trouble out of warranty these bikes were essentially just scrap.
@@logankeilitz6132 Aventon does use the same few battery packs across multiple models; it's only the outer shell that's different. In fact, when you do get a second battery to have two available, you should also order the cover that matches your bike with it. If you're replacing an old battery, you'd move the cover from the old to the new battery, with only 4 Philips screws. This does make it more likely that Aventon would maintain their existing battery packs for future models, though no guarantees with that alone.
@mikeobriien What you want to talk about? The common perception I get from people is that they are unaware they exist, but I always turn heads jamming my music with my dog in tow behind me, using little effort and not dressed as expected as one would be on a bike.
I think electric unicycles are better. Pound for pound, they are more efficient, more powerful, and more portable. Ebikes struggle up hills unless you buy those higher powered ones, but those are huge and cost more. I have a lower end EUC and I go up hills like it's nothing. I put it in my trunk, super portable.
I’ve read analyses where the efficiency ranges from 480-800MPGe. And other studies where the amount of road damage a 350lb ebike+rider+cargo does is just 0.00006 times that done by the average 4000lb car. So municipalities that have road maintenance budget issues would be wise to encourage more travel by bike.
If I want to commute I use my air conditioned truck lol and I can carry all the cargo I need. I can see an e bike being fun, if you lived in a small village and everything was close , but for me to go to my favorite places I would have to drive through bad streets maybe get robbed or get run over and when I arrived would have to chain up my bike. Half the year it’s hot as hell here and being on a bike is not much fun. Class 3 bikes are not legal in my state. Sounds like another thing to waste money on. I like to drive places and go for walks , walking is safer and healthier and not cost much lol
Do you know that the USA has 50 states and is one of the biggest country in the world? You probably know 1% of it (if you even ever lived in the US at all, which I doubt) so your generalization is a bit exaggerated.
Hmm... I guess that depends where you are in the US. I live near a ton of sidewalks, bike lanes, and bike trails. Previously, I lived in another part of the country without bike lanes or sidewalks but there was so little traffic that I just rode on the roads
Your neighborhood < USA. The city I live in has bike trails for off-road bikes and regular paved trails that extend throughout the entire city. Speak for yourself.
I thought that at first too but after riding this one with a torque sensor, I changed my mind. I think a bike like this is actually less lazy. Let me explain. A few days ago, I had a meeting that was 7 miles away. This would be a long enough bike ride that I would normally have just driven. With an ebike, I instead chose to pedal there. Perhaps not everyone will experience this but that's my perspective. For casual trail riding, you're 100% correct. Many ebikes are just lazier bikes
Heres a well hidden secret. If you do a 28 mile a day commute 5 days a week on a normal bike, you'd have 8 pack abs and veins you didn't know were in your body will start bulging to show off your fitness.
