I noticed you didn't mention the environmental harm from mining lithium cobalt and zinc. As more electric vehicles are manufactured, more and more of these mine's will be required. Not exactly eco-friendly, as they require more than just a hole drilled into the ground. Each battery requires several tons of rock to extract a few kg of lithium, or the other elements required to make a battery. All of which are poisonous; especially to wildlife.Have you any idea how much energy is required to make a single battery? We're ok here in the UK we don't have any Lithium, Zink, or Cobalt, so out of sight is out of mind.

It's really not as cut and dry as that, though. Solid state battery technology without lithium, cobalt, nickel and manganese does exist, and many manufacturers have dumped or are dumping cobalt (though given it's cheaper to mine lithium than recycle it, that does cast a shadow over battery recycling). Whilst I'm not an EV-angelist (yeah, that term exists), there's so much development going on right now that I can't see a road ahead for ICE vehicles... but perhaps it's more environmentally responsible to keep the used market going for now?

@@stephandolby Yes I am sure you are right about the development of batteries, as I really can’t see lithium batteries being sustainable in the long run. I am surprised Friends of the Earth haven’t started kicking up a fuss about the mining of lithium and the damage it is doing to the environment. I guess because most of it is mined in China and in remote areas of the world. So like I said, out of sight out of mind.
