Which of these two iconic, or "miconic", microphones do you best? Will the Shure SM7B be the one you choose, or will you elect the Electro-Voice for your voice?

I own the sm7b and an re320 but I still want the re20 cause it’s sound is just so unique and amazing. I would say the sm7b is the more versatile mic, it’s the best option for most people, but I personally prefer the sound of the re20.

In my case I did not want to invest in something which I did not love for its looks so I bought a rode pro-caster. Not sure if other people feel the same. The SM7B must be great, no doubt but I don't know why people praise it for the looks.

RE-20 is my favorite mic for mixed use (singing + speech + instruments), but I think it's hard to hear in head-to-head comparisons why it's worth the money. It doesn't necessarily shine in a head-to-head audio comparison, IMO, because you can't hear how much easier it is to EQ compared to the SM7B when the vocalist has poor mic discipline (like me) because its off-axis response and proximity effect are so even and controlled. I once did a song on the SM7B where I was both engineer and vocalist, which meant frequently walking to and from the mic, and every track sounded so wildly different that if I wanted to comp a track together, I needed to adjust not only volume but redo EQ for every single phrase. For what it's worth, I think SM7B in its sweet spot is extremely flattering to most vocals and speech, but you have to be in it. I also use condensers at home, and they can sound amazing, but it's more of a pain to use because you have to try to find moments of relative silence, lose some otherwise quality takes because of a car driving by, deal with pop filters or plosives, find yourself struggling with Izotope RX or other audio repair programs, etc. The RE-20 gets solidly good results, not amazing compared to others, but in my experience, it results in the highest rate of keeper takes, just make sure you get a FetHead or Cloudlifter so you have enough gain for comfortable monitoring.
@tombuck
@tombuck 2 года назад
That's a great point- the way that a mics fits into your workflow is a huge component that goes beyond the basic sound character. The RE20 is a lovely mic to work with. I hadn't used one until recently, and when I learned that they've been around for so long I really understood why. It's just an outstanding mic.
@shaft9000
@shaft9000 11 месяцев назад
True, that. Mics won't reveal their differences in isolation nearly as much as when you are mixing multiple tracks recorded with one model of mic. The most direct way to hear is to record some barber-shop harmonies yourself. A very revealing example is the classic SM57/58 compared to most vocal mics; they have a bit more presence and ability to 'cut through' a dense mix than most other dynamic microphones can, due in large part to it's significant coloration (...more like a mountain of boost spanning 3kHz to 11kHz) that peaks with a bump of >6 db @6kHz. It also send low frequencies under 200Hz into a strong attenuation of 5dB-per-octave. This imparts a focused or slightly 'muscular' bandwidth for tenor and alto voices to thrive in, but isn't so flattering to sopranos (especially if they are at all nasally-sounding), and entirely unsuited to a basso. Every good mic can sound great on some subject(s), but no mic is great at reproducing every subject in every situation. That's why it's much better to have one expensive pre-amp and several inexpensive mics than vice-versa. If I'm combining a dozen or more mics on all the drums and amps and singers - and the mics are all 57s/58s - then I'm dealing with some attenuated bass fundamentals, little to no sub-bass response, and exaggerated upper-mids in the 6kHz region piling up... that will likely need some liberal EQ-ing unless I'm in the mood for some rapid ear-fatigue.

The RE20 has always been one of my favorites. Back when I was in sound engineering school I used it for everything. I had access to Neumann mics and all sorts of high end gear but my favorites were the re20 and the AKG 414. But the 414 is obviously a very high end mic. I personally had an RCA 77DX but it got stolen. I wish I still had that thing.

it's not as durable as shure sm57 or sm58.. if you don't believe me, drop both ( re20 and sm58/57) plus the internal foam is going to disintegrate in some years time and it will affect the diaphragm if not taken care of.. but no doubt, it's the best sounding dynamic mic I have ever tried ( sounds like a ribbon mic )

I have both and love them both, I think the RE20 is a higher quality mic and the SM7B is little overhyped but both are great mics and you can't go wrong with either. If I had to keep just one of them I would choose the RE20.

Tom - Just a quick note to thank you for your great content. In addition to your videos, I recently discovered The Enthusiasm Project and have been binging in the car. As far as microphones, I like to think long term and am a "buy once, cry once" person, so I've been looking at the SM7B and RE20. This video came at the perfect time. The SM7B sounds to me to be the "winner" (that smooth, natural sound), but it's close. I'll probably try both and make a decision based on my own voice. It will be a tough call. Thanks again for the great content.

@TheStudioFreq
@TheStudioFreq Год назад
Cool comparison. Thanks. Just a suggestion though. The switches on the SM7B do change the frequency presentation of the mic as you said but that frequency change does not sound "compressed" as you suggested. I'm sure it was just a mis-speak. EQ settings used for broadcast do often have various similarities from person to person - which often include compression, but eq in and of itself definitely does not add any form of compressed sound. Fun fact - some of the compression we hear in broadcast is actually happening at the broadcast station which also compresses the sound before it hits the air (radio/tv). For streaming, other than the affects of the streaming codecs being used, if someone wants compression for the "sound" of it, it all needs to be done by the user now. I'm a full time sound engineer (25+ yrs) and I really love your channel. You've got great content. There are just some things that are very specific in audio engineering that sometimes are described and/or explained incorrectly by folks who have learned audio from other video folks or RU-vid videos over the past 10 years or so. There are at least 10 misnomers (audio principles and/or definitions) that are constantly being perpetuated across RU-vid that come from videographers teaching videographers audio. I almost feel obligated to comment when I see those things to try to help steer the ship back on course for as many as I can. PS, Pro user tip: when used properly, mics can be used as front end EQ's in the sense that proximity to the sound source has a big impact on what frequencies are captured in the recording and specifically what the volume (amplitude) of those frequencies are. Audio engineers use mic placement to get the perfect balance of both frequency response and reflection at the input. That way the sound can be enhanced in the mix rather than needing to be "fixed" due to poor placement. A final tip for today is one of the BIGGEST differences in mic quality is how a mic behaves "off axis". Each mic has a frequency response on axis, but the off axis info is what makes the biggest difference in how one mic performs over the other. That's where the cost of a microphone enters in. This is still noticeable in single mic uses, but is VERY important for stereo recording as the the stereo image relies very heavily on the off axis info being shared across the pair of mics.
@tombuck
@tombuck Год назад
Definitely a misspeak on my part, but thanks so much for all of the additional info!
@thejonathandoan
@thejonathandoan 2 года назад
Great comparison video. I've always liked the look of the RE20 more so than the SM7B (which is entirely a personal choice), but the main difference for me is, the RE20 has a high-end sibilance that needs taming, and the SM7B has a low end boom that needs taming - also it's harder to drive, so you'll need more gain. However, they both sound great, and I think with a little EQ, I might even prefer the SM7B due to the very smooth and easy to listen to sound, which matters when you're listening for long periods of time. On a side note, your video quality is superb! The cameras you use are very clear and detailed. I love 4K video! Even though, in my case, I'm viewing it in 1440p (my ASUS monitor is native 1440p). It still looks amazingly detailed!

Thanks for the kind words! I did a blind mic test last weekend and ended up choosing the RE20 over the SM7B, even though I would normally pick the SM7B first. Hi Tom. I love that you're an A/V nerd. I'm a recording studio nerd. I hope you won't mind if I nerd out on you a little bit. When you talk about a microphone being softer, studio nerds initially think that you're talking about the self noise of a mic, i.e. how much noise it puts into the signal. But we quickly understand that you really mean to be talking about a mic's sensitivity. What you're calling a quiet mic is actually one that is less sensitive than another. That's why you want to put a Cloudlifter on it. You say it is quieter than another mic but what you truly mean is that it is less sensitive to sound pressure and needs a little more amplification in order to sound as loud as another mic that is more sensitive. One of the other comments mentioned that the writer liked how your voice sounded using the RE20. To a mic/studio nerd, that comment is spot on. That is one reason why certain professional singers bring their own mic to a gig rather than relying on whatever a sound company might use. After much trial and error, they have determined that a certain mic compliments their voice more than any other mic they have tried. This is good info for podcasters to know because even announcers will benefit from using the "right" mic. Another reason that some bring their own mic is that they like to know that their mic has never been dropped on the floor or been used to stir a beer! As a host of two radio shows at two different FM stations, I use an RE20 at one and an SM7B at the other. As a community volunteer, I can only use what each station provides. On a side note, the RE20 was introduced in 1968. Although the lineage of the SM7B goes back to 1973 when the SM7 was introduced, the SM7B is the relative newcomer having been introduced in 2001. To tie the last two paragraphs together, Variable-D™ is the name of a technology developed by Electro-Voice in 1954 to reduce proximity effect of cardioid microphones. The result is the "virtual elimination of proximity effect." Perhaps this might be why nmbr73 prefers the sound of your voice through the RE20.

I'm biased because I have two of the RE20s. I tried the SM7b for a while. It's also a great mic but it sounded just slightly muddy to my ears. I own both, I also own a few Shure MV7's. Ive used all for my podcast. I have a naturally warm and deeper voice and while I love the SM7B I MUCH prefer the RE20 hands down. I feel the RE20 has the slight edge when it comes to capturing mid range tones incredibly well without muddying the lower end. The hype with the SM7B is definitely due to the "aesthetic" of the microphone on camera and with everyone wanting to be the new upcoming "RU-vid streaming podcast gamer on twitch tok" they just default to the SM7B since they see everyone else using it. But I am happy to see more people doing some decent research and more and more people are turning to the RE20...which I personally think looks better on camera...even if my friend refers to it as the Robot D**K lol.

I am a bit different, been using an SM57 with an A2WS windscreen on my channel. I am familiar with processing my audio with parametric EQ and it essentially becomes an SM7B. It doesn't need a cloudlifter and a heck a lot less expensive. Plus, SM7B became the Blue Yeti, where everyone uses it or wants it, I rather be different. A while back, when you made a video comparing between the SM57 and SM7B, I was sold. Thanks for the videos Tom!

Frasier really gave the RE20 some bonus points in my book 😁 Truthfully, I've had a weird relationship with the SM7B. I first started using them back in 2014 when I built a podcast studio for a school, but we had no idea how to use them properly and I ended up really disliking it (totally my fault). I then spent several years thinking the SM7B was overrated and not worth the hype. Fast forward a little more to a time when I had learned a bit more and now had the proper gear. I literally laughed out loud to myself when I connected an SM7B for the first time because it sounded so good. With the right setup, it's an absolutely phenomenal microphone.

Tom, great podcast and you've helped me a great deal. I've got one issue that I can't seem to solve. I'm using the RodeCaster Pro. I've programmed several music clips into the effect pads and then I've also got one bank programmed with my commercials. To your knowledge, is there a way that I can be carrying on an un-broadcasted conversation with a person who may be joining in via Bluetooth telephone for the podcast...basically, so we can have an off-air exchange during commercial breaks while I'm still listening to/prompting the effect pads?

Ahh yes, I ended up replacing the original lights with LED's about a year after building that studio. The other ones were taking too much power and generating too much heat. LED is definitely the way to go, especially if you can find several larger panels to illuminate a larger space evenly. Then you can add in other lights for specific style/atmosphere.

Question for you, did you create that box so you could do VO with isolation or just for this video. Also, how effective is the "iso-box" you created versus the higher-end solutions? I've been looking at these two mics for quite a while and will eventually get them both rather than one over the other. They both make phenomenal additions to mic lockers. Of course, I've got a lot of JZ Mics since they've become my go-to mics for talking and recording, however, they are large condenser microphones and don't have a requirement for a cloudlifter.

Your ntg is doing a fantastic job here. I have the RE320 I chose it over the re20 and I sold off my SM7B, it sounded beautiful but I think it’s ugly, I never used my cloudlifter for RU-vid as my focusrite scarlet solo has a loud solid gain. I use cloudlifter with band mixers. I wouldn’t buy the rode caster pro as it’s not powering that re20 properly, a broadcast quality mixer would run them, I notice audio guys on RU-vid don’t use any broadcast mixers to run their broadcast mics. I’d recommend a broadcast mixer if you ever make a tonne of spare money, I just sold off my broadcast mixer as it was too huge for my RU-vid desk. What would you recommend for RU-vid that has 2 xlr inputs that isn’t the rodecaster? Also you should be using a pop filter on the re20 I use a nice metal one. This video would sell a lot of ntgs that was first class audio at the start. The re20 looks better hanging from above with the cradle on.

I’m curious if your just plugging the Rode VideoMIC NTG into your DSLR Camera and bypassing the RodeCaster Pro all together? Amazing video Tom! just a little question, the optimal gain for both mics was 35 decibels (without cloudlifter)? or maybe SM7B needs more gain than RE20? I have SM7B + focusrite + cloudlifter and may gain is about 50%, maybe you could have another video about how to find the perfect gain, and thanks for good information!
@tombuck
@tombuck 2 года назад
As far as I know (and I might be wrong), "perfect gain" depends a lot on your mixer or interface. With the RCP, when you adjust the gain levels, it puts these little green lines around the level meter and you should adjust the gain to the point where the level is solidly within those lines. From there, you can use the channel's fader to adjust the level within the actual output mix. But on something like the Scarlett 2i2, which just has a knob, I just turn it until it starts peaking and then back it off a bit. 🤷🏻‍♂️

For podcasting the RE-20. its a easy pick.. the whole SM7B trend is hillarious.. Its a dynamic mic that has to get boosted so much that if youre not in a treated room or your set up isnt properly grounded your going to hear artifacts. It has never been considered a broadcasting mic as far as ive known. Not to mention you have to be directly infront of the sm7b in a fixed position much like a condenser mic. Now the RE-20 has the Proximity technology and the No coloration on its off axis's. You can move around and be natural while still maintaining the up close sound. This is why its in just about every radio station in the world. With how versatile the SM7B actually is, it's kind of funny that everyone seems to be using it for the one things its not for lol. It's ment for Recording Studios with controlled acoustics and silent rooms.

I don't have an RCP2-specific video for these mics, but they have shown up in quite a few of my RCP2 videos. The one about boosters covers the presets pretty well. Ultimately, the more powerful preamps of the RCP2 make both of these mics much more enjoyable to use with it. The presets are great too. You could probably dial in the same overall quality on the original RCP, but this just makes it easier.

I ordered the elgato low profile mic arm and a go xlr mini a few day ago. I like the sound of the re20 over the sm7b and I know that the re20 is long with the xlr cable plugged into it. Would it fit onto the elgato low profile mic arm and allow for keyboard space or is to too big? Also, would the handling noise be reduced when connected to an arm. Otherwise, I’ll get a sm7b as I’ve seen people use it with elgato low profile mic arm perfectly.
@tombuck
@tombuck 2 года назад
You can definitely use the RE20 with the low profile arms since the ball mount on the arm gives you a lot of flexibility. That arm doesn’t reduce noise very much though, so you’ll definitely hear any accidental bumps and things. If the mic is too long with a cable, you can always try using a 90 degree XLR adapter 👍

Well i have the SM7b and the RE320 and yes they sound a little different and at first i liked the sound of the RE320. But going on air with it and listening through the audio processing, the SM7b was more suitable for my voice. The only microphone that comes close to the "fat voice" sound was a condensor microphone ( yes really ) and it was the Audio Technica ATM31a. The Rode Broadcaster was sounding a little thin for my voice. So what you said about try before you buy is correct. Not all the microphones are suitable for any voice. So the microphone to go in this case for me it's the Sure SM7b.

Alright- I'll say this. I used to use a Blue Yeti to talk to my friends or people in game, and sometimes people would tell me it sounded pretty good (I used Nvidia Broadcast to block background noise) and it was perfectly acceptable. Because I'm stupid and like to spend money on things I don't need, I purchased a GOXLR Mini and a Shure SM7B, without a cloudlifter (it isn't necessary.) I receive compliments on how good the mic sounds almost every time I talk in game. It really did make a difference, and I love the customizability you get with the GOXLR. So for me, it was worth it. If you are smart and don't spend money when you don't need to, then I wouldn't recommend the upgrade.

The RE20 will always be the clear winner. It has that upper clarity and Air you get from a good Condenser. It's also richer in the lows naturally where as the Sm7b only gets it's warmth from proximity effect which introduces mudd also. I use it for Vocals/Instruments. SM7B is cheaper and hard to beat for the price. but if you just want the better and more usable microphone get the RE20 it's like only like £170 more expensive. You don't need an in line preamp quite as much with the RE20 but I do use a FETHEAD on mine as that way I can let it push my TB12 tonebeast Preamp they way it's designed for more colour.

I feel like the RE27N/D needs to be discussed more in these comparisons - it is a hotter / brighter mic that I think would be of more interest to many content creators who could benefit from the positives of a dynamic mic while also having a much more modern/crisp sound than either the darker tones the two in the mix will give. Also, needing less gain by about 5db can be a real factor for folks with preamps that just won't push an SM7b to the sweet spot.
