Are Falcom About To Correct The Biggest Problem With Trails? 

I just want to say, Estelle is still my favorite protagonist of the series, and I would happily play through the entire series from her perspective.

I'd personally just like a remaster/port. The artstyle of the original was part of the charm for me that I don't think a full on remake can replicate well.

One thing I love about Trails that I don't think the developers even thought about is how the entries tend to have conveniences that mirror the year they came out despite having an internal calendar. It gives off the unintended motif of the games having a recurring theme of the downsides of technology progressing too quickly. It allows for characters like Estelle to struggle to use a phone, but also allowing Juna to shred on a motorcycle in the span of 4 or 5 years. That being said, I really hope any remakes don't modernize the setting of Liberl- keep it as conservative as it was when it was released.

i would prefer a remaster rather than a full on remake because a remake would take a lot of manpower and money and i would much prefer that AFTER the whole series is over

Sky is the only arc in the series that I care about.

Actually, PC is the native hardware of the Sky trilogy, and it’s very much accessible on Steam, running on any old PC. It doesn’t hurt to have more ports, though.

Ah yes, let's kill all of Sky's charm and turn it into a soulless Cold Steel clone but with Estelle and Joshua. Great idea.

The most ideal scenario is to just port the Sky Trilogy to the Switch, where the limited but charming graphics and gameplay would fit right in and JRPG fans can easily access them.

I started with Sky last year and I'm currently playing CS3, it's been quite a journey, and I've loved every single one of the entries. I think that albeit a bit slow, FC is the best entry point overall. It's such a nice and comfy game that you can just take your time getting to know the characters and world. Such a satisfying game.... Plus it has chest messages, which I miss a lot in the CS games

Glad to see Falcom are finally getting around to this. We'll almost certainly get this Sky rerelease officially localised in the West. Contrary to what many fans online claim, we don't know for sure whether XSEED or Falcom owns the translation rights for the Sky trilogy. And even if XSEED did, it makes no sense to not license it out to other companies. There's way too much money on the table.

I think a port or enhanced version for modern platforms would be totallyfine, it also worked well with the Crossbell games. A complete remake is not really necessary.

I think most fans of Trails and those itching to recommend it will be happy with a remaster of the three games. More people get to jump in sooner and the trilogy being on console will be a game changer for a lot of people. Its a trilogy that no matter what happens Im buying the collectors/Limited Editions on console, very happily I might add. Sky will be able to be so much easier to appropriately access and that would make me happy. Falcom and NIS are legit on a roll!

I've been playing through the Sky trilogy for the first time ever on my Steam Deck this year with the Japanese voiceover "Evo mod"-absolutely LOVED SC, and am currently about 2/3rds of the way through on The 3rd. That being said, if Falcom were to release the Sky trilogy on console, I'd definitely pick up physical copies without a second thought.

I think the biggest problem with this franchise is the absence of "adult players conveniences". When I was a kid, I could play non stop and could renounce to any "help" the game could offer; as an adult, I often find myself playing at points in time so different that I forget what the objective was, can't make sense of my position on the map, and so on. I started Steel, and I was enjoying it, then I had to stop playing for one month (job related) and when I came back I didn't know what to do anymore. Restarting? no way. Wandering aimlessly? also no way. It would be nice if the developers kept this in mind and added some options for these scenarios.

I never finished the Sky trilogy because the first game kept crashing on me, and I haven't gotten back to it for almost 5 years. I would be more than happy to get physical copies of the Sky trilogy regardless of if they are just a port, or remaster, or entirely remade.

i got into this series last year and finished up the sky games earlier this year. i loved them and just picked up the Crossbell games on the summer sale!

My main question is if it’s a port is what will falcom do with western release for the ports?Because as far as we the players and fans know Xseed has the rights for sky trilogy. Have they at a meeting with Xseed about the possible ports or did nisa somehow brought the sky trilogy rights for Xseed. All this leads to more questions. But we have to wait and see either at anime expo, Tokyo game show, the possible Nintendo direct in September, share holders meeting in December, and maybe the game awards if they want a big impact for sky trilogy.

I remember there were reports of Hoyoverse talking with Falcom to collab with Honkai: Star Rail in the future. I have a theory that they’re going to release the Sky remakes when the collab comes out because the series will naturally have a lot of newcomers and just more eyeballs in general (if the collab is real ofc 😅)

A similar trilogy treatment like DQ 1-3 port is ideal way to introduce the whole Trails in the Sky trilogy globally (finally). And please have it available in multiplatform.

For a moment I thought it would be the localization 🤣 I was finally biting the bullet and buying them on Steam, learned why everyone says Estelle truly is Bestelle.

If they remade the sky trilogy I’d lose my mind. A port would be nice enough though. These hold up super well and the more accessible they are the better in my book.

The best entry point in the Legend of Heroes Trails series is definitely Tokyo Xanadu

I could see them going to the trouble of a remake if they were already having to make 3D models of Liberl areas due to going back there for a subsequent arc of the series. Sky trilogy was my starting point and it truly is the best place to start and hopefully more people will get to experience the full story from there.

Thanks for the clarification, I was confused myself since that's a insane list for one company. Not even AAA companies are transparent or have that many games in the work, Falcom is really ambitious lately and I'm here for it. Playing the Trails trilogy in 4k, 120hz would be amazing.

Make a straight Switch port of the trilogy's Steam version, and it's a day one, full price buy from me. No need for fancy shmakes.

Sky SC is still my favourite Trails game (with FC in my top 5) so getting them remade to look/play like Kuro would be my dream! But, even just ports I’ll happily take so I can own physical copies I can actually play (I bought the Japanese ps3 copies for my collection)

We need a new version, it's about time, it could be full 3D or 2.5 and I'd be happy.

Well, maybe I'll go and buy it on console if it gets a port... but atm, just started SC #4 (y'know, the part where you get context of a picture Dorothy took), so... yeah, I'm just gonna keep playing SC and then 3rd, and finally, I'll be able to just play the games on my playstation! So close, yet so far!!!! Definitely gonna complete my collection if they make releases for console.

Man i love the Trails in the sky. I remember playing the first chapter on the PSP, I found a cord that would allow me to see it on my tv. So there i was basically holding this cord with my pinky to stay plugged into my PSP, cause it just would not stay. But man that was so enjoyable just kinda janky playing this game on the PSP on my tv.

I want more people to have access to the Sky Trilogy, but I also really want a Tokyo Xanadu 2.

I'd be happy either way, but a remake could be interesting. I've played the PC versions so I know the story and probably listen to the music way too much, but if they remade it, I would love to see what would change and what stayed the same.

I've played Sky 1&2 recently and they've aged well I think. It's a great port on PC and looks like an indie game you'd see today. If anything they should remake Cold Steel.

Sky in daybreak engine, omg the shivers im getting. One thing is that i hope they keep the orbments same as in sky. Its the first game and has the simplest orbments but they have implemented them into the lore so well that it would break the continuity if they suddenly made them advanced. Its just my hope but whatever happens, happens

I’d love the Kai versions on modern hardware. I imported them for the Vita and played them that way. Love them.

I just finished trails in the sky on PC. I loved the series, if it gets a full blown remake and more accessible to the masses I would be super happy.

Here is the thing, how do they want to remake it? Similar to Ream style or the Van Arkdyle style? I think if they want to do a fresh start, a modification of the Ream style is due, with a more Persona / LAD battle strategy.

My first guess about the remake was Ys 1 & 2, but you made a good point and I'm kinda convinced. I really hope they remake something else since Trails in the Sky still looks aesthetically pleasing and they give us simple ports/remasters of the trilogy. It could aslo be a remake of Prophecy of the Moonlight Witch, which also looks aesthetically pleasing, but I'm really crossing fingers for an Ys game like Ys V or 1&2 which are very old and definitely need a remake 🙏

Never got round to finishing Sky because of a big ol' story/irl saga. But modern ports would be lovely. Or I'm sure a Remake in whatever the engine is called would be great - could probably re-use a heckton of assets but it would still be a mammoth thing.

I have a potato for a laptop, yet I can still playthrough the Liberl arc on Steam with a PS4 controller. But we do need a console release to get more people to play, even as a remake.

The thing that worries me a little here is Falcom apparently saying they want to finish Kai as soon as possible to commit to the remake. I really hope they don't rush that game. They can remake Sky anytime, but Kai is the crucial next step. I agree, a port would be a better idea. At least for now.

I'm at the very end of Sky FC on PSP and was planning on jumping to SC right after. Now I don't know what to do! Do I just keep going or wait in the hopes for an updated version before starting SC!?

A nice re-release of the sky trilogy that also includes the voice dubs of the Ps vita versions would be amazing.

I hope they remake the Sky trilogy or at least the first 2 games. I would certainly buy it again and replay it. It's still my no 1 favorite JRPG of all time, I'd love any excuse to replay the game again.

i think it'll be similar to how zero and azure we're released in the west recently. and i'm also thinking they may want to get it out in the west before we get o zemuria so fans can understand whats going on more

The one trilogy I haven’t played. Not a PC gamer so I’ve been starving to touch where it all began. I’ll take either port or remake as long as I can play all 3 on modern consoles I’m good!

I'd be perfectly happy with a Sky remaster on the level of what PH3 did with Zero/Azure for PC and Switch. If they really go for the full remake using their most recent tech, it'll take way more time and require their own team to work on it instead of working on continuing the series or making other new games. In the long run that would also put Crossbell in a weird place as new people discovering the series with a remade Sky would suddendly have to go back to older graphics and mechanics in the middle of the series before being able to play Cold Steel.

Hopefully it would just be a remaster to up resolution and sharpen visuals, and not a remake. The original style has its charm.

I’d gladly accept a port to Switch, particularly with a physical version. I bought Skies 1 on Steam and was enjoying it, but I just don’t want to sit at my pc desk any longer than I have to these days.

I suspect it's going to be a tweaked and reworked port of the Trails in the Sky Evolution games to all the major platforms.

So more chances for the 3 Sky Evolution titles than a full remake huh... a bit of a bummer since i already have those on my PSVITA, but well, considering a lot of people can't read moonrunes, i suppose it's would be the most logical decision indeed. Still, pretty impatient to hear what Falcom has kept stored for us for those 20th years anniversary, also Loewe is my boy!

Besides the Sky trilogy there’s also ports of Cold Steel 1&2 for Switch already. They just haven’t been brought over. Xseed has not acknowledged anything about the Falcom titles they hold the rights to. It’s very frustrating. Ys the Oath in Felghana remaster is out on modern platforms and just sitting there waiting to be brought over to the west.

I want the sky trilogy on Switch

I imagine the sky triology may be getting the Atlier Marie treatment. Not a full 3d remake in the graphics of modern titles, but rather a chibi 2d top-down remake with newer models, backgrounds, updated sprite art, etc. I would like full voice acting, and I imagine a jp version would, considering evolution. But I seriously have doubs for an en dub.

I hope a possible remaster or port of the trilogy will still be released on the PS4 and with physical versions.

It was a bit challenging as a non-pc gamer where it took me a while to play through the Sky trilogy. Especially during the summer when it is hot does not help to have a heater aka PC running.

I was confused at first when you pointed out the "problem", until you mentioned that the devs/publisher were the ones acknowledging some form of problem. Subjectively I don't see it, I played the whole series in order just fine, but I'm obviously "onboard" with a remake, and this entire thought process is just curiosity to me. With that in mind this idea of "old and inaccessible" as a problem, needs to be backed up with proper logistics, surveys, feedback, market projections, and more "stuff" I don't care. They (corporate) probably already took care of that, and know if it's hurting or holding back the franchise, not me. Anyway, I don't think this is the "biggest problem with trails", and anyone who gives it a shot, would quickly realize how charming and "full of soul" trails in the sky is (it has a number of other issues, though). So: Modern Times Entry Barrier to the trilogy? Yeah I will agree to that... Inaccessible and unappealing (that's the dev subtext I gather here), not so much. I probably wouldn't even comment, if something other than "biggest problem" was on the title.

I’m seeing a lot of people preferring a port instead of remake, but I feel the opposite. Star Ocean the second story R was as close to a perfect remake that polished out many of the original issues as you can find (at least in my opinion) and a remake like that for the trails in the sky trilogy would be perfect to me

The Sky evolution trilogy from Vita was good, anime portraits, anime shots & most important is, it’s voiced.

I've played the first two but a little of the 3rd because I don't have the patch.

further questions might be whether they want to release the game this year or next, since the nintendo switch is quite prominent in japan and the next generation console of nintendo "might" release next year as well. a port with some remaster features would be cool, but publishing the trilogy on a platform that might be replaced next year would be an odd choice as well. i personally hope for a hd remaster rather than a remake, though i'm hooked anyways.

I'm kinda lucky when i start play this series because i use PC, i start the series from Sky FC with Voice Acting, adding EVO music,and character potrait. I prefer remaster or rerelease EVO version to other platforms. If i remember in Interview last year for Ys X the interviewer ask Ys V Kondo said, development of remake game can cost more than new game. I think it's true when it comes to asset. Remake Sky Trilogy will be nice but i don't know when the remake release, NISA already catchup to Kai no Kiseki release.

Id be even happier if those ports get a physical release as we only have FC in the west as a physical. Would love to have sc and the 3rd as hard copies to add to my collection

While PC gaming has become more and more popular worldwide and has been a preferred platform of choice by more players than ever, there are still some people out there who don't want to play on that platform for some reason(like me), so at least remastering the Trails into Sky to modern platforms like they did with Zero and Azure trilogy would be great. I would rather have Falcom do that than have a full-blown remake of the trilogy. This would great as I am a newcomer to the series and in JRPGs, so I hope this happens. I also can't wait for Tokyo Xanadu sequel and the Switch port of the enhanced PS4 version of the original coming out in America this year, though it got delayed to July.

A port would be enough

Just started playing the sky trilogy a few weeks ago on steam. Currently on chapter 4 of SC, but still would be cool to own these elsewhere.

The thing is that i love the first triology and since i have it on PC i can play it every couple years. I have grown to dislike the new quartz sistems and i think the story got to "big" for their own good. But trails is still a series that i deply love with its flaws and i will see to its conclusion with a smile. And since i have the original that i can play when i want, i don't mind a remaster, remake or what they cook even if they made them more like the modern games if that allows more people to fall in love with a 600+ hours series. At the end of the day no one forces you to play the newer version

I understand that sentiment of just doing a remaster but I think we need remember that the underlying purpose of this is not for the people that have already played the game (eg. this community generally), but to get those that have not had accessibility to have the optimal entry-point into the series (and hence drive sales). Falcom needs to be able to appeal to a younger audience and get them into their games and that audience may want something which is more up to date than an isometric sprite-based game (which I love and I know many of the fans love but again this is not about us). And they would like all the veterans to buy the game as well, regardless of whether we have the old game or not - I know I would buy it even though I have the games on PC, Vita etc.. At the end of the day I think this will have cost benefit of developing a remake (high cost both in terms of $ and time but potentially high benefit to them because all the old audience plus significant new audience who have felt blocked to the series) versus a remaster (lower cost maybe - depends on the portability of the code, but a lot less benefit). I think if I was going to do a remaster, I would look to get it onto Android / Apple through emulation because that would probably provide a lot more accessibility with low cost and it would look appropriate for the medium. But would that be very satisfying or achieve the goal?

I love the Trails In The Sky Arc, so good. I prefer it to Crossbell, Cold Steel 1-2 were my first 2 but I went back and played Trails In The Sky Trilogy, masterpieces. 1-2 I wayyy prefer over 3 though. I played them on Steam and played Crossbell on Switch. Now I move on to the newer series, Trails Of Cold Steel 3 onward A remaster or remake would be great, could just be an HD 2-D or 2.5-D remake too I would honestly love that, but would not play until after I finish all the other Trails games cause I already played them.

Wanted to ask as someone who hasnt played the evo versions... are those game just a face-lift in terms of visuals and all, or do they change the story of the respective parts?

I love Trail of the Sky's art style, but unfortunately they will never return to the chibi characters and more anime style that Trail of the Sky once had.

My devil's advocate thought - though I would like remakes of the Sky Trilogy - is that beloved remake might be about White Witch/Prophecy of the Moonlight Witch instead, as if I remember right it's the reason Kondo at least joined the company.

I would love a full remake but even though I already own them on PC I would still buy (not at full price) updated ports of them depending on what is different though I have a feeling they would be closer to straight ports then remasters

I think the original is great as it is, I hope they don't change much. A similar treatment to what Zero and Azure got would be best, that is QoL, and improvement of assets and textures... But the game structure, music and gameplay themselves are great as they are. Yeah, QoL, improved menus, remove the bugginess when you go into "high speed" (4x etc) movement in the map (that can jam you into the scenery) etc... Or perhaps a remake, but really I think the game has it's charm due to that isometric graphic style, a charm that also comes from its simplicity and that would be lost with a cold steel like remake. (yeah, I love the style of the Sky trilogy) I mean, there is a lot of charm in e.g. that choreographed fight between Agate and Loewe with Silver Will Golden Wings in the background played on the beautiful pseudo-isometric engine of the Sky trilogy has so much damn charm, sometimes I have dreams about it.

If there is a sky remake and they rewrite the dialogue, then it won't have full voice acting and the older games would still be a better entry point. If they don't rewrite the dialogue then I guess it could be patched in.

Personally, I would like to start with bringing all three games into a single package and placing them on modern hardware. Then we can start talking remakes because its going to take a while to build this world under the respective engine like you mentioned. Also the translation for a new game should be looked at as well. Again, time.
