I hate how fish and hamsters are treated almost as "living toys". I myself was guilty of that when I was a kid, but it was because I was not properly educated. In fairs when I see gold fish being given to children as a prize, I'm like WHY??

I won a goldfish as a prize at a fair when I was little. I became absolutely enamoured with the little guy, so my father helped me set up a nice tank for him. Our at-home filtration system was kinda shoddy, so I had to change the water more frequently, but I managed to keep the water healthy for my fish. I became SUPER interested in fish and hyperfixated on them during my Otto's lifetime. My little guy didn't live too long, only a few years, and he got HUGE. My Otto lived for about three and a half years, which is already ancient for an inbred little feeder fish, but it still felt way too short. I was absolutely GUTTED when he died. He was 11-year-old me's whole world, and losing him was all I could think about for the school year. The more I see videos and channels like this talking about fish care, the more confident I am that I gave that little feeder fish the best life I could. I hope to take care of fish again someday, in Otto's honor. They're such beautiful creatures, no pet deserves to be a "disposable" pet.

Sounds about right! Goldfish naturally grow quite big, but lots of people don't know that because most people think it's fine to keep them in tiny little bowls, stunting their growth. Idk a whole lot about fancy goldfish (I very much dislike most fancy goldfish, the same way I dislike how people have bred pugs and siamese cats), so maybe some of those are bred to stay smaller, but I know that normal goldfish are meant to grow much bigger than people think.

I've had fish in my tank and a couple days ago they turned 3 years old! :D we've gotten pretty serious with how we take care of them, we check pH, Ammonia, oxygen, etc on almost a weekly bases and we feed the fishes a variety of live, frozen, meat and veg etc. I love them with all my heart and even though cleaning the tank and draining the water is tiring, seeing them swim around and grow families is more than worth it!!!

🐠 In fish keeping, education is key. Each fish has its own unique care requirements so it’s hard to answer this question with a straightforward answer. Overall, it’s easy to maintain a beautiful tank but it’s also just as easy to make mistakes - I know I’ve made a few that’s for sure. Hopefully me sharing my experiences helps you to not make the same ones!

I used to work in a pet store (corporate chain) and we had specific requirements about who could and couldn’t buy fish. The amount of people I had to turn away because they wanted to keep their fish in tiny bowls (some people like to use live fish as table decorations?) was shocking. People really think fish don’t need care just because they’re small :/

It makes me so sad that people often don’t take proper care of their betas.

When I was a kid I had some fish as pets and they always died, it made me feel kind of guilty, then when I grew up I started getting interested in fish keeping channels and oh boy, was I unprepared. I think most people don't know how much (if not effort, at least knowledge) it takes to properly take care of a fish and they just give it to children without properly preparing them for the experience

Same here… i had a cichlid tank as a child, with new cichlids every second week Got back into the hobby a year ago, & im still learning new things. As a parent people should either inform themselves or have their kids study the matter a little before just buying a fish. You wont buy a new dog every week if your kid doesn’t take care of it, so why kill fish for fun? 🙃

I kept goldfish back when I was in school. Won the first one at a church fete. Don't think any of them lasted longer than 2 months. I had a 40 litre tank, powerhead and bubbler, and I would use test strips to check the water. Now I know that 40 litres is not enough for onr goldfish, let alone four. I also know not to put store-bought fish into the main tank without a long quarantine period to ensure they aren't sick. Fifteen odd years later, about six months ago, I got that 40 litre tank down from the loft. I set it up, cycled it, and after a month, bought six Rosy Barbs (a much smaller schooling fish.) Those six Rosy Barbs are still alive today, and I intend to keep it that way through the power of actually knowing what I'm doing.

From experience, I find that 'beginner fish' are still harder to care for than a dog. Although bettas and goldfish can live long lives under bad living conditions, as you say. Surviving doesn't equal thriving, the bettas and goldfishes I saw in other people's houses have scales that are falling off and fin rot problems. If you live in ignorance and buy fish without educating yourself, it's easy. But when you actually do your research, fish keeping is so hard😂 (and expensive AF)! Me and my dad wanted to keep goldfishes but after I told him what it would take to keep them healthy and beautiful he said it was too much work and we don't have the space to house them.
@wolverinexo6417

A fish should never be harder to take care of then a dog. You should be walking your dog 5 times a week or preferably everyday. Dogs need near constant attention and there food is expensive.
@citroken
@citroken 2 года назад
@@wolverinexo6417 I think the problem is what she said where people think surviving is good enough because most people can't tell whether a fish is "happy" or not with their quality of living. Idk about being "harder" but it's definitely more tedious to me to learn everything your fish needs, make sure everything from the ph, ammonia, salinity, temperature, co2 levels, bacteria etc are balanced correctly to have healthy growing fish + the consistent cleaning of their tanks and average care taking, not to mention random diseases that seem to just come out of nowhere vs. A pretty easy to understand dog with simple needs similar to our own so we can easily recognize when something is wrong. Ofc it's up to personal opinion and as someone that's owned both it's obviously never an easy job to be any pet parent!
@roopaachuri2216
@roopaachuri2216 2 года назад
@@wolverinexo6417 fish need constant attention to water parameter water quality must be maintained. Walking a dog 5 times a week isn’t that big of a deal or difficult if you miss one day of a dog walk your dog will be fine if your still regularly walk it. If you miss a water change it could be serious. Water quality can easily change if you accidentally overfeed your fish it could put major stress. fish keeping is harder then keeping a dog if you don’t have live plants and no micro fauna .

For my beta, I always make sure the ammonia level isn't too high, I put a thing in his water that prevent infection, there is a filter in his aquarium and I make regular water changes. But, I've seen people who keep them in very small bowl and that don't make water changes often. Remember that, even if they are qualified as "easy to take care", it doesn't mean you can neglect them, they still need to be took cared of! If you are wondering why are water changes so important, its because their poop produces ammonia, and ammonia is toxic to fishes. Changing the water removes the ammonia and let the fish live longer.

And that was because we kept them in a 40 gallon tank with regular maintenance cleaning control, and a variety of food. First, fish live in a completely different environment from us humans. That's takes the difficulties up a notch. Once I took care of a sick tiger barb. It was almost recovered until I was too busy and forgot to change the water in its temporary quarantine tank. The next day, it was dead. Then one of my neon tetra got sucked inside the filter and crushed into pieces. For a few days I kept looking for the missing fish until I saw its bone sticking out of the filter sponge, and the entire tank become cloudy out of the blues.

We got two fair goldfish that died almost immediately in our tank, we didn't know they were cold water fish(we were like 7 and 8), so when we found out the type of fish that were warm water we got fish suited for the tank and water we had. All of our fish lived for years even after we gave them away after that, lol. Bala sharks have got to be my favorite!

I would say goldfish and bettas aren’t hard so long as the tank is at least 5 gallons for a single fish, you have the proper equipment (read a filter and possibly a heater if it’s a Betta), you keep an eye on the water composition (lit just stick the paper in test and add stuff accordingly) and you keep it clean. So read, it’s easy once you get past the set up stage. The setup stage, yeah that’s tricky especially if it’s your first time. But after that fish tanks mostly run themselves with supervision. It’s not like a dog where active participation is required constantly.

I have one beta named bubbles, I have him in a 5 gallon tank and it’s very lush. I’ve had him for about a year and it’s actually not super easy, you have to clean the tank often and find the right food and environment for the fish.

I have 7 goldfish, 2 big adults, 4 one year olds and 1 a couple months old that we just got last month. I was always told goldfish were super easy to take care of but its kind of hard. I had gotten my first fish 5 years ago and he's still thriving. We got our second fish a year after and they're both as big as my hand. My first fish I named Stick, my second I named Twig. Twig has jumped out of her old tank before while I was out with my family but she lived and i found her in time. I love my goldfish, and over time without realizing they've learned that when they want food they can go up to the top of the tank when they see me. My newest one named Gili is barely cathing on and learning. I love my fish, I've grown emotionally attached. I used this as an excuse to talk about my fish too, I love them

When I got my first goldfish last year, I was really uneducated. After it died, I waited and got a bigger tank. I educated myself on how to properly care for a tank, and with my mom's help, the tank became healthy and I put a betta from the fish store in it, though he died after a while- I'm assuming it was because of his health, I think he had a disease when we got him from the store. My current fish is another betta, his name is Aang and he's doing great. He's happy and swims around a lot, he's smart and knows to go to his feeding portal when it's time. Education is key to keeping your fish healthy- and effort. If you don't put the effort in, it won't last long.

A good beginner pet over all is a hermit crab they are easy for the most part as long as you give them shells something to hide in and sand or dirt. Then you just feed them and give them tons of water

I'll give the same advice I got from a friend when I started fish keeping. Don't start with a small tank and don't start with a lot of fish. The extra water and space will be a buffer for your fishie friends if you do have issues. It's easier to keep a 125 gal tank community stable than a 5 gal. The water changes and not over feeding part remains the same.

We received 4 Goldfishes as a gift for my father's birthday in June last year. We added 4 more fishes in the later months so at one point of time we had 8 fishes. Since we were beginners and knew nothing about handling fishes + the worst weather was there, so unfortunately 2 of the baby fishes died but after that the rest 6 are thriving. I still miss the other two which sadly passed away tho

I have 5 fish tanks, a ten gallon with a beta (male) ten gallon with some zebra fish and tetras, another ten gallon with a beta (male), a 20 gallon with a goldfish (currently trying to upgrade, but it’s the best I could do at the moment) and a ton of red wag platys cause they had children, and a 15 gallon sorority tank with three betas (female)

I'm curious, how's the sorority doing? I've heard it's very stressful for them and they could be prone to more diseases due to that.

A friend who moved left a fish behind to me when I was a child. Another girl and I "split custody" and took care of it swhiching it each month. All I was told is to change the water and use the heater - but my father kept unplugging it because he thought it was a fire hazard. I didn't know better and now looking back I feel really sorry for the fish.
