I've seen this guy before. I checked out one of his other videos and within the first couple of minutes, he calls a gay people "satanic devil worshippers". at that point, I couldn't take him seriously anymore. I won't deny that there is a lot of garbage games getting released now that also tend to be progressive. but that bit genuinely left me laughing out loud. the worst part is that I can get behind some of what he says. but I think I agree with him for different reasons. he says, "it's woke, liberal, satanic garbage getting injected into video games." I say it's greedy corporations prioritizing revenue and player retention rather than fun.
If a gay character is outwardly gay its pushing an agenda, if its a subtle reveal through hidden clues they are turning straight characters gay, its a lose lose situation, its like to some people there needs to be a lore reason why someone is black or gay, as those people don't just exist irl.
That doesn't work for some games. Look at Cyberpunk 2077. The one blatant transgender person in a game all about swapping body parts and cyborgs, is (afaik) the only time you'll see the transgender flag, slapped on the back of the same transgender character's truck, which you can eventually unlock to drive it, and many people are confused as to why transgenderism still exists in the world of cyberpunk. This was definitely an "inclusive, in your face" moment IMHO, while the logic behind it made no sense.

A diverse cast of characters is always nice. One of my favorite casts is baldurs gate 3 and elden ring, both games have such interesting and unique characters that aren't just manly white guy

So he's saying old games were better because it had men in it. Not because they were good, or had amazing combat, or that the characters were well written, nope it was good because it was about men.

I couldn't care less about a character's sexuality, but many game studios think that diversity can replace writing. Many companies think that being gay isn't a single attribute, but rather an entire personality that should be the crux of a character, and that is the problem.
I think one character that's personality is literally just being gay but is actually written well is Bernie from GTA 4. Im not going to go into full detail but basically in the beginning the protag is trying to track down the man who sold his unit out and you spend most of the 1st part of the game trying to track down this man who from the protag's personal experience viewed him as being one of the manliest and intimidating soldiers in the Yukoslovian army. Once the protag confronts Bernie, you find out he became super feminine and openly gay and we don't know why until Bernie reveals he wasen't the one who sold the unit out and when he directs the protag to the real betrayer he lets down his mask briefly and became super menacing before repressing his trauma and going back to himself. For the rest of the game he's just a regular dude who's super femmine and is openly gay thus his personality just being "im gay" but I thought that was pretty deep especially since you do jobs for Bernie since him masking his trauma also made him reject violence despite being just as skillful and hardened as the protag.

That's just been a trend in video games over the last decade, because in-game lighting effects have gotten better, and textures/models can be more detailed, so you don't have to have a gray tint and motion blur over everything to hide the low resolution graphics. This whole video is an unintentional Rorschach test where everybody's weird markers for what is efeminite and "unmanly" come out in full force. And then the other 50% of the totally manly men have to justify why their chosen character isn't gay. It's like being in Middle school all over again, I hate it.

As a straight male who is in love with old 2000s video games, I must say I always appreciate well written female protags as much as well written male protags I don't ever care about games that aggressively include LGBT stuff, I'm not gonna support it, but I'm not gonna go around and call everything gay or wish we could have more female characters whose only purpose is to be the sex object and the male protag be more dominant I just want a game like Saints Row 2, the main target audience is male but can be unisex with the inclusion of female character option, and yet they still didn't hold their punches with the theme of the entire game Or better yet, just a female protag that doesn't have to be entirely written around LGBT, I'm tired of game devs trying to be so diversed and try too hard to please everyone, but not focusing on what makes a game good and what makes a story good

I want nice writings, good plot, likeable characters, awesome soundtracks and amazing gameplays. That's it. If I can't have all of those requirements met in a video game, that is fine too. I can appreciate the remaining "saving graces" of a flawed game at the very least. The diverse representations in video games don't bother me. It is tokenism, a.k.a "shallow diversity" in video games that bother me. That is when I can tell the developers (and their executives) went with their pathetic D.E.I approach for their games. That is when we know they're desperately pandering to a certain crowd but failing miserably anyways.

My Dad used to work for rockstar games as a programmer/game tester when the first GTA games were coming out and he said it was the most toxic work enviorment he's been in. He left because of it. From what I've been told by some of his work stories there were no women working there.

there's no such thing as "forced diversity". the term doesn't even make sense if you think about it at all. diversity exists, and it's baked into the creative process of making media because the people making it want diversity. there's nothing "forced" about that. of course his problem is the existence of any diversity, that's the point of being "antiwoke". people who "hate forced diversity" really just hate ANY diversity.

You probably have couple of tripple A slop of your choosing set to release in 1 or 1,5 years so in the meantime, instead of grinding your frontal lobe in multiplayer of your chosing, just grab 60 bucks and browse indie section to buy whatever makes you curious. Play Lacuna and when Sunless Skies, they are amazing.

I do agree that currently games are focusing way too much on inclusivity while ignoring the quality of the product, and the market is so unsure with ruthless backers ready to pull funding at any moment if you don't satisfy their agenda, but god damn. Why do you need to sound like Andrew Tate? 3:51 there are seven gay characters in Red Dead Redemption. Rockstar's GTA IV had a mission that literally revolved around a gay character, and the gay character was presented in a positive light, although flawed. Bill Williamson, a gay man in Red Dead Redemption 2, was presented as a manly man. "But he has a wife!" They made it abundantly clear throughout the game that he, like most gay people of the time, married someone to hide his sexual preference. He is a closeted gay man, and it is deep within the canon. People hold Rockstar on a pedestal for "owning the libs" and "being an icon for anti-wokeism", but they as a company are extremely diverse and present "woke" characters all the time. The only reason people talk the way they do about Rockstar is because of the controversy they got into with GTA because it was "too violent". Rockstar Games is a great example of how a great and talented team of developers can make great games and make characters that are gay or feminist or anything else that is considered "woke" and do it just fine. Don't insult the integrity of Rockstar by wrapping them up in your own anti-woke political propaganda. Thank you, Pyro, for covering this guy, I cannot STAND him. Anti-woke fearmongering is such a cringe and worthless way to waste your time, someone's artistic integrity and creative freedom should never be limited for someone else's political values. The author of the video in question is so afraid that his fragile masculinity will be ruined by a character in a game he probably doesn't even interact with. I'm gay myself and I CRAVE more LGBT characters in games/other media, but not the woke way. Woke character is a character with no personality, plain husk only existing to show that "HEY, HEY, LOOK! WE HAVE A GAY/BLACK/OTHER MINORITIES CHARACTER!!! NOW GIVE US MONEY!!", no, i need really good, fleshed-out characters with personalities that consist of more than that they're a part of a certain minority
I'm gay and i DON'T want more LGBT in games or other media, because all we're going to get is characters whose only personality is their sexuality/minority they belong in. There are ways of making gay characters interesting, but now a days i have no hope for it to happen.
