Are video gamy myths and urban legends dead? Some may say that's the case. That perception certainly exists, and in this video, I seek to identify and explain why the community feels this way.
Thanks for tuning into the SeedButtter channel today. I've been trying out some new editing software so this video took longer than it should have, but from here on out, the quality of videos will be improving. I hope you subscribe to stick around for more.

As I'm listening to this I'm reminded of the hilarious incidence involving Chapter 3 of Metal Gear Solid 5 and all the weird stuff that went down regarding a secret Nuke Disarmament ending. I guess that could be considered Urban Legend related.

this was such a great vid! I was just talking to some friends about gaming urban legends and whatnot, and I think different generations of gamers experience these myths, easter eggs, etc. in different ways - like the urban legends of my day is super different than my dad’s, kinda neat to think about!

Data miners make such things less sustainable, urban legends lose a lot of their luster when the mystery is gone, so if someone can look into the code and find all the assets they can determine with certainty whether something is true.

Data mining and how easy it is to do nowadays affected this alot. Being able to search every file in a game leaves no room for error. The only myths that can be are more meta, like myths about the making of the game and what was cut, or what a game designer might have meant with something placed out of boundaries that arent used plainly.

When it comes to modern urban legends in gaming, the games put out by Rockstar such as GTA V and Red Dead 2 still have a lot of mysteries surrounding them. Of course everyone knows about the Mount Chiliad mural, but in Red Dead 2 you have the markings on Mount Shann, the missing princess poster, and the 3rd meteorite piece. While much of it is chocked up as cut content, many people still look for answers. Cut content itself seems to be a thing talked about much more often now, too; I'm not sure if I'm misremembering but it seemed like back in the day it was much more common to assume that the devs shipped the game with everything they wanted to include and didn't cut anything out (which we now understand is extremely common). And the increased documentation of anything and everything in videogames has turned what could have been potential legends into just easter eggs-- like the UFOs in GTA and RDR. A little hope can be found in the fact that many easter eggs manage to go years without being discovered, such as Tunic's Tuneic language (though that was only secret for about half a year) and the Sasquatch vs Beast fight in GTA V that is so cryptic and difficult to start I still am not sure it is real-- but these are the exceptions, usually. As for my favorite gaming legend, I've always been a fan of the myth that you could go to the moon and capture Jirachi and Deoxys in Pokemon gen 3.

I haven't finished the video yet but if I were to attribute anything the lack of newer vg rumors, it'd probably be because 1.) The initial boom video games had in the 80's and 90's has died down/progressed more and more into everyday life and 2.) It's a lot easier to debunk things now. You could never get away with saying something like "Luigi is in SM64" now without it being disproven within the hour by someone who dug through the files and code and turned up no Luigi. You could probably get away with it if you were telling it to a gullible kid or something but it'd never get to the scale of popularity and video game legend as it has if it were created now. Lastly, 3.) The internet. With the internet being as big as it is now with all it's resources to look to, you can't really make something up without the person you're telling it to look it up and tell you you're wrong.

Bigfoot in San Andreas is what introduced me to urban legends in video games and for that, it'll always be may favorite.

It's like some of the cod zombies easter eggs. If those didn't have guides and walk throughs there's no way most people would discover them let alone complete them.

This channel is a seriously underrated, hidden gem. Quality content. I share many of your sentiments, interests and hobbies it seems. The internet is truely special sometimes. Keep it up! I'll do my best to support your channel as much as i can. Although i keep up with alot of content, as despite what my current channel would state, i have been watching RU-vid content nearly every single day consistently and passionately since 2007. Love that your videos are about exploring everything mystical, secret, fantastical or interesting regardless of whether or not it is popular, childish or controversial. It's incredibly great considering that it is "clean", yet still relying on the video essay style of some other RU-vid channels. Almost no swearing, unless absolutely appropriate or nessessary. Not done purely because the YT higher ups are soulless, "politically correct" tyrants - but because it's just your own personal style to be more formal in your approach and creative expression. I'm sorry for not commenting about anything in the video here, but if i did that, i would end up nerding about SO many things, which would make me waste too much time unfortunately lol. I do miss old easter eggs and secret levels/features in video games.

my favourite myth was that you could play as N. Oxide in CTR for PS1/PSX. you can play as him in the new one, but it'll never be the same as trying to beat everything in the game to try and cheat Oxide out.

I bet that it isn't even that the games aren't old enough, but that the audience that best makes these legends isn't quite old enough to add to the conversation. I'd be shocked if there wasn't a hoard of playground rumors formed around FNAF that are on the brink of joining the conversation.

I think there is also another looser factor, ARGs. Catastrophe Crow was an ARG, and so was Ben Drowned. There are many games, like mario 64 and minecraft, where there are both urban legends like Herobrine and ARGs like Old Root. Edit: mario 64 examples would be unlocking luigi or unlocking waluigi in the ds version, whereas SM64 Classified and The SM64 Beta Archives are ARGs.

It doesn’t matter if they’re were fake. They were fun and entertaining story’s that gave you chills and were interesting to learn about. Plus they aren’t all fake and you can still get missing no.

Urban legend has a pretty solid definition and that is something that is pure BS, such as L is Real in Mario64.

So, basically, humans and advanced technology are what ruined modern gaming urban legends. Well, that's okay. I never liked gaming urban legends. I think they're dumb and 90% of the time are hoaxes; like, why fond over something that may be real, but turns out to be fake (or with modern games, no longer exist due to patching)?
@ravenfrancis1476
@ravenfrancis1476 Год назад
For the same reason people feel emotional investment in other "fake" things. We know, logically, that they don't actually exist, but they're still fun to hear and talk about. And yeah, of course they're "hoaxes", that's what made them urban legends. If we had undeniable verifiable proof of their existence it would cease to be an urban legend and would instead just be objective fact.
