Great stuff, as always! I found the Samsung 990 Pro 1TB for $119.99 USD on NewEgg US and ended up picking one up finally. I couldn't justify 50 to 70 dollars more, but 20 dollars over the WD SN850X 1TB was a bit easier to swallow. Still no luck on the SK Hynix P41 Platnium coming back down to under 110 USD as I mentioned in a comment in a previous video asking about it. NewEgg US lists it but it's WELL over 200 USD. 🤣 At least it's ony 149.99 on Amazon US.

I was so excited to see this video post. You are my favorite SSD reviewer. I actually bought my current drive (2TB WD 850x) based on your review and have been totally satisfied with it. I also have an ASUS Strix X670E Motherboard and I've been wanted to outfit it with a Gen 5 SSD. You are the first reviewer I've seen who posted a useful review of a Gen 5 drive and it has given me some good information to consider. The only detail I wish more SSD reviewers would include is Windows load time. However, when I considered how time consuming it would probably be to load a new Windows installation on several drives, I can appreciate why reviewers would think the juice is not worth the squeeze. As always - great job with this review.

Looking forward to my PCIe 7.0 x1 NVMe SSD doing 15GB/s haha. I wonder if the future will be sticking with older PCIe specs or using fewer lanes of the newer specs. Given the current pace of PCIe spec development and average delay from final spec to implementation on platforms, the spec should be finalized by 2025 with implementation in platforms by 2027-2028? So I guess I'll be checking to see Nada's review of the first Gen7 SSDs in 4-5 years? Haha.

As a KC3000 1TB owner, the only thing I d like to improve on the next or very next generation, is the Virtual Memory, that is using NVME as ram when ram runs out. Even the 15 GB autosave (of Blender) every 2 minutes, is not that annoying anymore
@MyrKnof
@MyrKnof Год назад
"Using NVME as ram" thats one way to say swap file, and also kill your drive. Windows does this automatically, as you will just get a hard crash if you ran out of memory otherwise. Atleast thats what happend in earlier versions, as I usually disabled swapping to get better responsiveness. Just had to be careful with my chrome tabs XD
@iliasiosifidis4532
@iliasiosifidis4532 Год назад
@@MyrKnof it's called virtual memory, and it is really useful for creative apps like blender, because it's giving you time to save a file before restarting (otherwise you ll get bsod), or even turn off a feature that takes to much memory (like subdivision)

4k reads are still largely the same as a gen3 drive, and even decent dram/tlc Sata SSDs are competitive under that regard.. which is truly what is needed for Windows responsiveness and general system fruition. Sure directstorage will eventually make these drives shine, or if you video edit or compile heavy stuff.. but for now gen3 Vs gen4 gained very little if not nothing with Forspoken and I can't feel a difference running my windows from a Crucial mx500 to a WD 850 or a 980 Pro, unless I pull out a stopwatch to measure differences that often won't matter at all. So we'll see.. new Crucial Gen5 are already at 12k mb/s, others will probably push it more. But I still wonder why 4k reads are stuck.. is it what nvme protocol limit?
@TechTesters

I am more confused why this drive exists TBH, yeah it is blistering fast until the cache runs out then it turns into the same as gen3 and gen4 drives. If I am not mistaken the whole reason to use Gen 5 in the first place isn't the Overwhelming bandwidth but like Samsung is doing using CXL to have co-processors speaking across PCIe at ultra low latency, I could swear they said IDE is 0 but I might be mistaken. Its fine for files before you hit that wall but ultimately you are always going to hit that wall, as for gaming Forspoken showed zero difference in frame rates trying to plug into the new tech wave "Directstorage" but to be honest I don't even see a need for that unless you are a Fallout/Elder Scrolls open world game. Atomic Heart did it really well. So I am a bit confused, I hope the prices on these drives are more back down to earth, If you are charging more than 50$ a terabyte you might be just pricegouging.

@@TechTesters Yeah I can see that point of view. I can't help but think mostly this will just be used as marketing and product stacking for the sake of sales, and not really any form of actual benefit to consumers other than maybe those who don't move large files around. Almost reminds me of the Gen 4 PCIe cards that used bifurcation on a severely limited set of boards, while it is nice to theoretically have those speeds, software and the OS itself will end up contributing to bottlenecks that make it a waste even for enthusiasts, that is you don't eventually hit the cache brick wall. As A side note it would be interesting to see newer drives that upon formatting allow you to chose; SLC, MLC, TLC, or QLC modes and allow consumers to make the choice in capacity and theoretical endurance level, even though personally I haven't seen a drive being used since 2008 hit that mark where it fails due to overuse of drive cells erroring themselves out. I mean for the most part the drives are capable as in operation they proved that with the Cache reserving features. It would only be as fast as the SSDs slowest part, and it may be very real to bottleneck the controller and NANDs capabilities, but it would be none the less interesting.

Not a knock on your review, because I do enjoy your channel... This is just another TLC NAND drive with all of TLCs inherent latency and low endurance. Hooking it up to PCIE 5 won't make a difference, unless your use case is running synthetic benchmarks, which test onboard cache and little else.

I wouldn't hold my breath for SLC / 2-bit MLC drives to become a thing again :P

@@TechTesters That isn't my point, which is that there is no real world performance gain with this drive.

Could you also test Gen5 drives in a Gen4 board? (or just limit the main slot to Gen4 from BIOS). I would be interested to see how it behaves. Naturally the sequential performance would take a hit but it would be interesting to see if a Gen5 drive limited to Gen4 could saturate Gen4. Also would be interesting to see if random r/w numbers would be affected at all considering those are below the 8000MB/s theoretical limit of the Gen4 standard anyway.

I'll stick with my sn850x nice review your definitely the go to for ssd and once you standardise ya monitor reviews you'll be just as good as Rtings or HWU

My only hope for Gen 5 is that it makes gen 4 and gen 3 cheaper.

seems like the pc tech industry nowadays just keep on churning out products with no practical/wide-spread application to real-world problems, all for the sake of just being able to sell something, and banking on the propensity of the 1st world market to buy whatever is put out there, for the fear of missing out. Hot CPUs, "flaming" hot GPUs and now even hotter SSDs LOL bring it on . . . .

"New" stuff not making a lot of sense has always been a thing though. In the end we end up with better/faster/more efficient products anyway.

You's be surprised at how quickly I can accelerate the demise of an SSD. 1400 TB is less than two years for sure.

As far as I am aware Gigabyte barely ever have a firmware update for their ssds

Guys, new viewer here. I beg you just start posting CrystalDisk Mark results. It is really exhausting to evaluate benchmark charts. I understand you want to be original, but Crystal is too easy to understand from the first sight.
