I'm not usually a fan of the internal layouts and design choices British rail operaors go with, but this is a fantastic interior and a good choice of model as well - the seperate genset makes for such a quiet and smooth ride for passengers. Good call, Greater Anglia!

Better than any other regional diesel. It's a huge improvement noise wise not having the engines under the carriages. Certainly better than the ones EMR use on the Norwich route

Comfortable seats? Lighting that's at a reasonable level instead of being brighter than the sun? Please, other UK train operators / rolling stock companies, take note! Presumably the other advantage to having the diesel generator in a separate car is that the EMU can be fairly easily re-raked without it if it's going to be used on a fully electrified route, reducing dead weight and increasing efficiency. Given that more routes will have to be electrified during the lifetime of this train if we're to meet our climate targets, that seems like sensible planning.
@ChangesOneTim
@ChangesOneTim 2 года назад
Yes, it's an extreme version of the modular style in which today's MUs are built. Most are designed so that underfloor diesel powerpack rafts could one day be junked and hydrogen/ battery/ nuclear/ whatever powerpacks can replace them. With the 755s the power pod can either be refitted with something else in place of the diesels...or lose the deadweight and scrap it if going AC electric-only.
@tomcarr1358
@tomcarr1358 2 года назад
Borrowed from Modern Railways: - The power cars could be removed once the network had general electrification thus achieving a weight saving and noise reduction. There are 4 diesels in the power car and two can be switched out where load, schedule and gradients allow. Seat backs regarded as being too close to the vertical for long journeys. Lack of internal doors from vestibules into seating area compromises heating arrangements. Remote overhead pictograms to advise on WC cubicle occupation very helpful.

Narrating rather than captioning allows you to give a lot more detail about the train and the areas it passes through, which is much appreciated. In print it would have covered the screen; spoken, it's just right.

We live next to the greater anglia line (Ipswich) and the trains are really impressive. The livery is great, the general design, and the interior make you think… why aren’t all trains like this in the UK? They just feel expensive.

You could have mentioned that the line will soon gain a station. Soham, between Ely and Bury, closed in 1965 but is set to reopen as a single platform with a two-hourly service pattern. The chord facing Newmarket may be reinstated later to permit Soham-Cambridge running. It is strange that Soham (pop. now 11,000) was axed while Kennett, the next stop towards Bury, was spared. The site is cherished as the scene of one of the railway's most heroic deeds. In 1944 a driver and fireman gave their lives to prevent a wartime munitions train exploding near the town centre.

This was bit of a time warp for me, I spent seven years at RAF Lakenheath during the early 1980's. Think the Station there is no longer served, nearest being Bury-St-Edmonds. Didn't have a carpark but being an Officer I could always get a ride to the Station. The rolling stock was ancient then but good enough for the run down to London. Been trying to get back but this damn Covid. Keep up the narrated videos, so much better than the old ones.

I did this route recently (Peterborough to Ely) and I was very impressed with them, they look very continental. Rumor is that these types of seats might be going into EMR's 810s, and if that's the case, I'll be very happy. Although to be honest, any decent seat is an upgrade from the seats on the current IET fleet, bar the Lumo 803s. I also find no step access is really satisfying to look at for some reason 😂.

another lovely journey. I'd surely take that train. Very nice interior. The whole train looked like an upgrade. I love the step free access. That would be a giant aid for me. The scenery was pleasant. One more thumbs up Dylan. Maybe next time we'll get to see a little more of you. I love the quaint old station at March. I'm sure I've seen that in movies or on the telly.

Great camera work Dylan - and what a pleasure to see a well designed train on UK rural routes. Loved the step free access - even my power chair could cope with that, and as you didn't mention any catering I presume none was available on this short journey - which is understandable. Prices as usual in the UK too steep to encourage more usage. Will be ever learn? (rhetorical)

That stopped a long way from the buffers at Ipswich, could've got a bit closer, having got that out of the way I must say that these 755's are a very nice train with no engine sound under the seat, these will certainly give some of the British counterparts a run for the money, the trip will be even better if and when the Peterborough to Ely line is equipped with overhead electric supply

Another good video and voiceover Dylan. Those Stadler trains look good. A few years ago I travelled from Milano CLE to Parma on another train from the FLIRT family. At the time the train was packed and had to make do with a fold down seat. They're not the best for comfort, especially on a long journey.

Lovely video Dylan, excellent work mate. These are my local trains as I live in Norwich, these are a better improvement on what we had on regional and express trains, fast smooth and comfortable although the seating is a bit hard for me. For me though as I don’t use trains that often they can be expensive even for a single which puts me off using them on a regular basis. Keep up the great work though 👍🏻👌🏼

I lived near Ipswich until two years ago and was a regular traveller to London so I enjoyed the video. Worth pointing out one nonsensical issue regarding the station interchange which is that they do not allow National Express coaches to call there. They have to terminate more than a walking distance away which is clearly to prevent competition with Greater Anglia. Damned annoying when you've caught the coach from Heathrow and need to connect with a local bus service or taxi in Ipswich.

Thanks for this nice and informative video, as they are always ! The ticketing systems made remembering the old days of British Rail, when you got for the very most of the destinations a cheap day return ticket at a reduction of 30% in total with some restrictions during peak hours. As a tourist from abroad, as I 'm German, I could by a Tourist Return Ticket in alot of travel agencies allover Germany in advance without these restrictions. To understand restrictions in a foreign country may turn into a quite likely unimpossible mission...

Hello Dylan, The quickest journey between Peteborough & Ipswich via the A1M & the A14 takes at least 1 hour & 45 minutes for the 94 miles. Current petrol costs alone at 30 mpg are 22 pence per mile or £22-60 for the journey without adding in the additional costs of car ownership, which virtually double the figure to 41 pence per mile or £38-54. Even without your discount, the train saved over £10 & you travelled in comfort.

Living in Switzerland I've got the opportunity to try out a bunch of Stadler Flirts, be it from our national railroad company SBB or the regional BLS, who just got the newest 4th generation Flirts called "Mika". Unlike the class 755 they are purely electric, as all our lines here are electrified, so they are more comparable to your class 745. The overall standard of the Greater Anglia Flirts looks to be pretty high, I'd say at par with our latest "Mika" version. Your seats look a bit more comfy, while on ours the windows are a bit bigger and offer even better views. Here's a video featuring the "Mika", feel free to compare: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-2EJzcWeb0OY.html

A good ticket to consider is the Anglia Plus day ranger, which for Adult is about £24.00, it allows travel in a Boundary of Cambridge,Ipswich, Ely,Norwich, so a good day out on the flirts can be had, both 755 and the 745, ive had a good few days running around on the Flirts, and can recommend this day ranger, for a good value day out.

Nice train, good video. The step-free access from the platform into the coach is great. But one thing that hasn't been mentioned is that some of the 2x2 seating at the tables is elevated with a small step up to the seating area. If you forget there is a step there when leaving your seat, you can lose your balance and find yourself thrown against the seats opposite which has happened to me more than once! This is obviously not a problem if you use the 755's regularly.
@buffalo6524

Good report Dylan as always As a very old retired railway signalling engineer I get a travel discount on tickets but that aside I think if they want to save the planet (cop26) train fares need to be halved and carparking free for ticket holders to get people off the roads. This 755 stock is not bad at all and the wife and i use it to go to Liverpool St fairly often. Stay safe more power to your excellent trip reports Lee & Christine

Part of the reason for high fares is to choke off demand, the comparitively short trains typically used in the UK could not cope if the fares were slashed. Even BR used the same technique soon after the IC125 HST was introduced when it became too popular.

The Class 755 doesn't really compete in the same segment as the Voyagers. The Class 755 is a firm regional unit. The Voyagers are Inter City units, hence the 125mph top speed versus the Class 755's 100mph top speed.

Hi Dylan. A double whammy from me this week as I am just catching up with RU-vid, etc. after being set free to travel last week (30th Oct.). I nearly fell out of my chair when this video started at Railworld, which I visited briefly while waiting for 60163 'Tornado" to arrive to convey me on a journey along the Nene Valley Railway. You travelled part of the way I journeyed on a separate trip from Peterborough to Cambridge on a CrossCountry Class 170. Brought back great memories from Sept/Oct.2018 for me. Thoroughly agree with your assessment of the Class 755 Units. Wish we had some downunder, although our V/locity units (Bombardier) are not too bad by comparison (apart from hard seats in some of the 2nd series and later units). I was quite blown away by the Renfe AVE S 102 units on your Madrid to Valencia journey on the other video I've just viewed. Again, it's great to hear your commentary while viewing and not being distracted by the caption comments (although I appreciate that these continue to be useful for viewers unfamiliar with your accent or who may be hearing impaired. Thanks again for two very informative videos. Looking forward to next week's offering. Cheers from Michael in now free Melbourne, Australia.

Which app do you use for the speed? Do they work on every train?

One of the better U.K. trains that I've seen. Great video, Dylan. One of many things that I love about living in New England, is the plethora of English names. In Massachusetts there is a coastal town called Ipswich, and here in Connecticut we have New Britain, New Haven, and Norwich to name a few.
