I totally agree with you, Crist. I used to have two items (MacBook Air and iPad Pro) and both were great for me. However, I sold my MacBook Air because I do a lot of things with my iPad for my work. Like you said, the iPad and MacBook are totally different, but they both help you get your tasks done. In the end, it depends on what you want to accomplish or achieve with your tasks. As I said, both items were good and I have no complaints about them, but for me, the iPad works well for my tasks.

ipad looks cooler than any macbooks and laptops but it only does the light work and at the end of the day most professionals use their laptops or pc to finish and polish their job you cant do that on ipads. all good with those people who could or think theyre all set with ipads but real work means needs computer. i remember i tried to use ipad pro as laptop in college. it couldnt even render and open simple word assignment. yes you can edit it but once you did that everything are all messed up esp the one that has tables in it. theyre all over the place and i ended up using my old laptop

I do 100% of my work, including mid-grade video editing, exclusively on my iPad. Granted, the Mac is better at some of these tasks, true. However, the form factor, connectivity, app libraries, and other tools make the trade off worth it. You can absolutely do Pro work on an iPad Pro. Granted, some tasks will be “easier” on the Mac and others on the iPad. And I’m fine with it. @@user-li6ns2lk3z

This is a great take on the iPad Pro. I have a 12.9" iPad Pro and a MacBook and agree that they do different things and both can make sense in your life, and with the Magic Keyboard I totally agree -- the iPad then offers most of the flexibility of the Mac but still gives everything that's great about a tablet. Also worth mentioning that the 12.9" iPad Pro has the XDR display that the MacBook does not. For me, that matters.

They are complimentary products and not trying to replace each in any way. I have carried both Mac and iPad for years and use the heck out of both of them daily. Honestly, from 12.9 Pro to Mini… my iPad Minis have always had a special place in my workflow. But that is the point… individual use case is the most important thing unless you have both and if you do, you will find how they work best together.

I saw the other video, and I think your rebuttal is brilliant and fair. I switched from pc to the Apple Universe five years ago at the ripe young age of 70. Today I have the iMac 27.5”, an iPad Pro 11”, an iPad Mini and an iPhone 12 Pro Max, and each has a specific use, and I.m at each of them every day. I don’t expect any of them to do what the others do. Well done!

Definitely agree with you. We work on MacBook pros, and iPad pros. The iPads are so much easier to lug around knowing that we can auto transfer. Because it’s just easier for us to use. Each one does its own thing.

As an illustrator, the iPad Pro is a vital tool. The only thing I ever use my Mac for is to scan physical artwork. I’ve bought newer Macs in recent years, only to return them, because they really don’t offer me anything new to my current need on a Mac. My 10 year old MacBook can handle it, as long as it still breathes. But even with scanning, I can use my flatbed scanner on my iPad. I don’t have as many options like I do scanning directly from Photoshop. My iPad gets constant use, where at most, I use a MacBook for about 15 minutes a week

I have the first M1 iPad Pro and I appreciate how long it has remained relevant for my use case . In fact, I replaced my 2015 MacBook Pro with the iPad Pro when my logic board went out. I have a few hobbies that are dependent on Windows so my other computer is a windows laptop. With cloud solutions it’s pretty seamless working on things using both. My desk setup includes a Logitech keyboard and mouse with a 27” monitor that I can toggle between the two and it works well enough that I have been running this setup for about 3 years. It’s fairly safe to say that if I were to integrate another MacOS machine into the mix in the future, it would likely be a Mac Mini and not a laptop. No judgement on others doing different things that work for them and I agree that Apple understands this and has generally been pretty perceptive to its customers.

Spot on rebuttal. It resonated with me greatly. I’ll just say I’ve been a content creator and professor of media tools for quite some time. For many years I’ve had to (like all of us) move and shift with changes in tech (anyone remember going from NuBus to PCI hardware with the Mac). I have found my way to maximizing the benefits of the Mac and the iPad very nicely now… and I actually use two iPads and a Mac Mini M2. My iPad Pro 12.9” has a Magic Keyboard and has replaced my MacBook Air for daily work and my iPad Mini 6 is my notetaking device ( I love handwriting notes with the Nebo app) for replacing paper and having my notes everywhere (thank you Paperlike!). My M2 Mac Mini is connected to my entire recording studio/art studio and handles Final Cut, Logic, and Adobe apps. I use the Logic Remote app on my iPad to control Logic Pro on my Mac Mini from across the room when I’m tracking on my weighted Roland keyboard. I can’t imagine life without these products. Great job on this video… the Mac and iPad are two devices with different use cases for many people… sometimes you just have to spend some money to get what you need in order to streamline your workflow… I’ve definitely found it in these devices. Thanks for making this video… it supported what I’ve been experiencing over the years.

I am also still using my 2018 iPad Pro. I think both iPad and MacBook have value. My MacBook does higher horsepower things and my iPad is for lesser needs. Sometimes it's really nice to have that touchscreen with Apple Pencil and other times it's nice to use the MacBook with its capabilities. I agree with your take on this Chris. Thanks for this video!

Excellent video. For years I’ve had both a macbook and an iPad and use both, depending on what I’m doing. Macbook for writing long documents (often with external display), working with big spreadsheets, creating Powerpoints and similar. Great if you need multiple apps open, eg Word, Excel, mail etc. Ipad if I’m sitting in a coffee shop reading email (it’s lightweight & convenient), checking diary / making quick notes or just browsing sitting in an easy chair. I’ve got the keyboard for my ipad pro, but don’t use it much. A major plus for having an ipad for me is portability, lightweight and convenience.

Thoughtful response and opinion. I’m an academic professor and conduct roughly 95% of my research and teaching on iPad Pro 12’9 with no issues. It meets all my daily needs and major projects. There are rare times where I have to go to my office Mac for minor file conversions due to software limitations on iPad apps… which I suspect is due to developer decisions.

So glad to have found this video. Made me subscribe and add notifications. I saw the “other” video… I left a comment about how much the lightweight iPad, not having a keyboard, and the most notable touchscreen are what I love the most about the iPad Pro. I’m on my 2018 iPad Pro 11” almost all the time. My m1 Mac fills in when I feel like I need a bigger desktop. Even when traveling I’ve never missed my desktop or MacBook. Would not mind another incremental iPad Pro update soon or even a big update. Does not matter. I’ll buy the next iPad Pro even though… I don’t need to. It’s just time to update the technology. I have been gifted 5 years of patience because the 2018 iPad Pro 11” is simply amazing . Great video Chris.

To your point about longevity, I had the iPad Pro 9.7 from 2016. The battery started to deteriorate over that last year or so, but was still supported up to ios 16. That’s 7 years of support. For any tech device that’s really good. I’d been interested in the 12.9 iPads since they came out so I finally upgraded to the M2 iPad Pro. And I’m sure I’ll have it just as long.

As a professional graphic designer and indie comic creator, I wish Apple would make a separate MacBook Pro line that is similar to the Microsoft Surface Laptop Studio. A MacBook Pro with touchscreen/Apple Pencil support would be a dream come true. And still I would get an iPad, maybe not a iPad Pro though lol. Only because it would be mainly for media consumption, and the iPad Pro would be overkill for that.

Agreed with your more sensible, thoughtful, considerate perspective. The alluded to content creator hasn’t been my bag for a while, but I respect the notion of “to each his or her or their own.” Love both my iPad Pro and my MacBook Pro. Do the devices overlap a bit?-Sure. But neither is “dying” … and a little overlap offers me different springboards for similar (or the same) tasks. I can take notes, browse the web, consume media, etc. on both devices, and depending upon the moment, I may use either depending upon my mood. I don’t see them as competing in that way, but rather as complimentary. And I’ll second the lack of need for a keyboard-sheer tablet user here that feels a keyboard defiles my iPad experience.

Great Video, wish you did this video a month sooner 😂. I had MacBook Pro (2014) & 3rd 11” iPad Pro. Both still run great but decided time to upgrade since I started my MBA, so I checked out the apple education store. I went back and forth between which to upgrade but decided to get 12.9 iPad Pro. I really liked what stage manager offered, so paired it with the studio display. Your video hits home when you start talking about accessories though. I found myself spending so much time looking at cases, stands, keyboards which led me to this whole RU-vid tech review world and channels like yours. I really liked my set up, as it gave me a computer feel when I was at my desk but could just take my iPad alone when relaxing in the evening to study, watch videos, read, etc. However, there was a void in certain things a MAC offer that was missing. So after a few weeks , I went ahead and added a MAC studio to my set up. Overkill for sure, but I tend to use my tech longer term and they both do seem “future proof’ for many years. Main accessories I went with was Keytron K8 pro & Logitech MX 3s, both really solid. Using both IPad and Mac with universal control is amazing! Although I didn’t plan on it, I guess I fit into the both category and apple makes having multiple devices so seamless.

When the iPhone launch it changed the game and disrupted every productivity device. Now you have one device that have these capabilities to do things a computer can just not as good because of the size which restricted the use ability. The size restricted how it can be use but it was such an easy intuitive design that almost anyone can learn in less than a week. Today you have college classes that last semesters just to teach you how to use a computer. iPhone had simplicity Mac had ability. The iPad was and is a perfect device to bridge that gap between simplicity and ability. You can purchase an iPad and in a week understand 90% of it. And that’s why the basic iPad models to the air are perfect for 90% of the customers where the iPad Pro and air is perfect for the other 10% where it gives the extra more “ complex” Mac ability but does not over whelm majority of the OS where the average person can still grab it and use 90% of it.

You aren’t obnoxious-unless you count your video thumbnails!!😂 I’m JOKING!!! - you have to grab attention & totally understand, but I truly have no negatives, so I just made up a small barb to have some fun 😂 You don’t have some over-the-top presentation w/ fireworks, ulterior motives simply to sell something (we all have to eat, but that’s not what I’m talking about-I try to buy stuff from you as much as possible like screensavers, etc., to help out you & others whose work I respect & can see your goal is to ACTUALLY HELP VIEWERS. It is thoroughly appreciated, so those who can, should support the channel for hardworking, highly driven & intelligent people like you! Thank you for keeping them crisp, clean & quick! They are fantastic and you know what you’re doing. - NOTE, I am not one of Chris’s parents or relatives -🎉😂 Oh yeah, and this - they can have my iPad…when they pry it from my cold, dead fingers…and my Apple pencil will be in the other hand…

I’ve been using my iPad Pro since the m1 came out the last one I had was the iPad 2 I was mind blown by how much you could do with it now compared to back then. I was exited when stage manager came out that was my main complaint is multitasking. My only complaint now is uploading to websites is much easier dragging and dropping on a Mac that you can’t do with most iPad apps etc.

Thank you for pointing out the fact this depends on the user because no one else seems to wanna mention this, it’s just all about what the iPad Pro cannot do. I love my iPad Pro and I love my MBP. My MacBook Pro is where I type of assignments, check emails, web browsing, Zoom calls, and some light gaming. My iPad Pro is used for FaceTime, Netflix and Disney Plus, checking email, filling in and signing documents, writing notes, web browsing, and light gaming, and it’s a lightweight travel device. Different software experiences and uses for me.

I get you! I saw that video and as a user of both an ipad and a 15 inch older macbook pro (i9), I would totally be down with an ipad that has the ability to run illustrator in a way that I’m fluent with. I see what you mean though. I think that had I more time to invest in utilizing my ipad more, it would definitely stand to replace more of my workflow especially on the go. The reality is though, that it isn’t for me in that way. Going on a trip, if I want productivity, I take the mac, if I want to view content, I take the ipad. One thing in that video that does make you think is that when you’re staring at the larger macbook pro with a magic keyboard on it or a regular apple keyboard for that matter and a mouse, you kinda just wonder if the software could offer a couple percent closer to that core experience so that the software is also producing that same modularity and flexibility that the hardware is. It’s not worth it likely though as it’s not going to be something to flow over to the smaller ipads so it doesn’t represent a very large chunk of the pie. I can bet they check out pc devices that try to offer that software flexibility though and if they have a good idea on how to solve it, they probably will. With a 15 inch macbook air, who knows, maybe we’ll end up seeing a larger ipad someday.

Ya I’m an artist and never in my life have I used a keyboard on my iPad Pro, just the Apple Pencil.

For me, I use a laptop for work and iPad for personal use. If I required a device for video editing then I would use the Mac Mini, e.g. I use the same keyboard and monitor I have setup for my work laptop.

As a musician, I use my ipad pro to store music scores As a student, I used my ipad for note taking As a working adult, I use my ipad to sign documents and fill forms, but also to watch videos and series These are all use cases that are way more practical on an iPad than on a macbook (if not impossible on a macbook)

To be honest. I haven’t really used my MacBook forever. I’ve been more on my iPad for years now..from drawing/photos/videos/mastering music etc..my iPad gave me all that and more. I love going on hikes etc and my iPad is right there..every idea I get on the go is right there on my iPad…an idea about sketching hit when I’m out, my iPad is right there, I sketch it..a music riff pops in my head, boom..iPad is here etc. my iPad is my MacBook.

If Apple removed the 4 app limit for apps on an external display and let me do away with the stage paradigm entirely, I would use it 1000% more. I always feel like Stage Manager gets in the way of what I'm trying to do.

So like I'm an artist and I mostly work on PC with a pen display. But I want to get my first iPad. I want the 12.9. I think it is iPad pro M2. Do you think it's worth waiting for the next version to come out? Because they said it's going to have the M3 chip and it will be the first major upgrade.

I actually got a raspberry pi and use it with my ipad. There is another channel that has this, I have an edge case where I would rather have my 11” ipad and pi vs a macbook. I agree that the ipad will always have a special place in my workflow and for many years to come, i will use both… unless apple gives us a way to partition an ipad into two sections, mac os lite + ipad os and you get to switch between the two.

I agree with you, Chris. I enjoy my iPad pro even though I don’t do all that I planned with it. Still, I use it more than my Windows laptop simply because it is a transformer, when I want only to draw on it. At some point, I will get a MacBook because I see the usefulness of having both tablet and laptop. Not everything is fully functional between Apple and Windows like Notion and Canva. And even Notion is more easily edited on my laptop than on my tablet. My only regret with the purchase of this iPad pro is that I bought it with too little storage at 128 Gb. I enjoyed your video, really like the way you parsed this out.

You can’t turn a MacBook into an iPad but for the cost of the iPad accessories needed to turn an iPad into a MacBook you could buy an iPad and have the best of both worlds.

Agree. The only things I would hope for is at least 8 apps instead of 4 per screen and the after that all I need is for Zoom to integrate into SharePlay for better screen share capabilities and most knowledge workers will be set free!
