whether low-carb is the best thing or not, I could never stick to that. I "lost" (I worked hard for losing weight, so I hate that term) 25 kg on a high carb diet and I now maintain on a high carb diet. I love carbs. carbs are friends, not the devil people try to make them out to be.

Well that's just great that your body can metabolize carbs that well.. Problem is that there is a large majority of the population can't and when they do eat carbs they get sick (including myself) and suffer from a host of metabolic issues.. The science on how carbs effect those with say type 2 diabetes or any kind of metabolic illness is undeniable..

Yeah when I was in my 20’s and working out and eating non keto I had solid gains but later on started to develop bad bloating started to allergies started to get fat and started to become forgetful and my gains started to decline. I went to keto ( it was dirty keto) my fat went down but everything else stayed the same so I went back to non keto symptoms got worse. Did some research started clean keto after a few months all my symptoms went away and iam now doing better in my late 30’s then I was in my 20’s

Im a low carb proponent but i dont disagree with anything said in this video. I agree that low carb is a tool. Ive found is a very effective tool. It may not have an advantage on energy expenditure. But i do think it has an advantage on sustainability from a satiation perspective. Its easier to eat less calories when your blood sugars are stable all day long.

Gary Taubes was so monumentally discredited and rendered irrelevant a few years back, to my knowledge he never responded to any of those criticisms ...and now they’re finally getting the “results” they originally wanted from NuSci. I used to be a real and not "religious" fan of LC diet :) That was because I love fatty food and I used to have some stomach troubles while eating most of grains, wheat etc. But when I found out I was celiac and eliminated gluten and tried to eat more carbs I changed my preferences. Science helped, since I also found out that eating more carbs equals more energy and my performance improved on a higher carbs diet. But I can imagine LC lovers who do not like carbs, certainly it is possible

I appreciate you Dr Layne. You’re an encouragement and example of how to put your work where your mouth is. Keep up the great content. I would love to hear if you’ve ever come across any credible studies that have analyzed a possible threshold for carbohydrate spill over? I tend to take a more modified ketogenic approach to my life and will cycle in carb refeed days twice a week usually (sometimes 3 times weekly) in excess of 350g carbs or more on those days with somewhat elevated fat calorie intake (I always keep my protein levels high to around 1g per pound of body weight) and find that I don’t trigger massive carbohydrate binging and keep my strength levels up in the gym for both the days I go low carb(under 100g) and the higher carb days whether I am utilizing balls to the wall bodybuilding workouts or incorporating some steady state cardio as well of 30 minutes or more. Inversely I’ve noticed if I go 3 or more days in a row where I am above 350g carbs then it’s like my body registers some massive storage of fat receptor and I fluff up a bit(get softer around my midsection) and engage in an unhealthy relationship to binging on carbs. I am assuming that by this characteristic I must be very carb sensitive and find that my performance suffers in the gym and I lose ability for endurance in my steady state cardio as well. Any thoughts on this conundrum are very much appreciated. I am a healthy weightlifting gym rat who believes in trying to stay as lean as possible as I keep my calories higher to put on muscle tissue. Currently around 10% bodyfat, 215lbs, at 6ft 1inches, and 41 years of age. Keep up the great work brother. You have no idea the positive impact you have on us daily grinders our here. I have done a lot of low carb diets and would get into ketosis when I'd fast. I noticed an increase in clarity when fasting after I switched to a different department at work were my quality of work was constantly under scrutiny. So I finally started a real ketogenic diet for a month or so. I had the blood ketone test kit and was getting into ketosis on the diet and felt the mental clarity I had when fasting. But the week of Thanksgiving I got off the diet and have been off since. I don't feel as though I have lost any of the mental clarity (but maybe I just haven't noticed it.) I haven't jumped back up 5-10 pounds like I usually do when I introduce more carbs, and my digestive issues I used to have with a higher carb diet have only very very mildly increased. So I don't know WTF...
@bhigshaman6644
@bhigshaman6644 5 лет назад
Literally in the exact same position as you. Started lifting this summer but had way too much excess body fat, was skinny fat and the added muscle made me look worse. My diet wasn’t great either. I did keto/IF for about a month and a half, felt great, and lost 23 or so pounds give or take. I also broke my diet around thanksgiving, I eat much more carbs now, adding breads and stuff back in (not excessively but with some meals) and I feel normal. Fasting is huge for me, I feel much better. This is a very uninformed opinion, but I feel that you and I like reset our bodies or some shit. I feel I was a tad insulin resistant before since I was eating so many refined carbs. Who knows. I just watch for calories now, I don’t eat all that much (OMAD or two) and try to make the best decisions, and I’m still losing weight. Weird. Sorry for the rant but I saw our scenarios were similar.

I'm in the same boat. We might be insulin sensitive at the moment. Now that our guts are a bit used to eating carbs it my be time to go on a bodybuilding diet. 16/8 fast 3 meals. Low fat Grilled meats, steamed yams, and steamed veggies. Hitting macros. Since the fat is low micros should not matter as much? Think not sure about the calorie deficit with insulin sensitivity.
@xinic5
@xinic5 5 лет назад
Yeah how much fat and carbs to eat confuse me. I'm not sure if it matters or not. I feel like trying to reach certain goals for those would complicate things for me, as opposed to only focusing on calories and protein.

When you switched to low carb I'd expect you cut out a lot of junky highly processed food and sugars as well. Since going back to eating the carbs are you eating the same carbs you were eating before low carb or are you choosing better quality less refined and less sugar laden carbs?

@@SteveHonakerII I have eaten junk food, but I try not to too much. Also, it wasn't always junk food that upset my stomach or made me gain a few pounds or feel less mentally clear, it was stuff like potatoes as well.

Ok so is all anecdotal but I think many people myself included find it easier to get into a caloric deficit through a low carbohydrate diet. Personally I don’t eat any carbohydrates at all and I am trying to get into a caloric deficit. I find that a high fat high protein diet is more satiating. Also, and my apologies for not having the studies to point, taking breaks from carbohydrate intake does seem to have an impact on insulin sensitivity. I find this Especially beneficial when I come back on a hard training phase and I have adjusted my macros to be heavier and carbohydrates lower in fat for my energy and performance. But I’ll leave you with this opinion I think it really comes down to individual. As well as the goal. Hands down carbohydrates is the main fuel source in athletic performance. I feel it’s a far superior fuel source that fat. And so If you’re training hard to increase your energy expenditure to put yourself in a caloric deficit it would make more sense to me to use carbohydrates which again is a better fuel source for athletic performance. But if you’re more sedentary and you are not greatly increasing your energy output or being athletic I find it much easier for people to lower the caloric intake to get into a caloric deficit by eating high fat low carb. My two cents

Appreciate the intellectual charity of disclaiming that lower carb can play a role from person to person. I think part of the reason for the low carb zealotry stems from individuals who have found that it works very well for them. Not just how well the protocol satiates them and allows them to eat less, but, and I think more attention could be placed on this, the nature of individual food cravings, and how much overeating can consist of highly processed, high sugar foods. While one could make the case that the highly palatable highly processed foods abundant in the developed world are also higher in fat, I wonder in aggregate, if the average american were to cut out ALL highly processed "junk" food, what the carb/fat ratio being eliminated is, and crucially, the quality of the particular macro. IE. corn syrup vs. sweet potatoes, or avocados vs. hydrogenated soybean oil.

I have lost a lot of weight on low carb but I was having an issue adding any muscle mass. I worked with a Nutrition coach and did a Macro of about 190g carbs , which was a lot for me, added 200g of protein and saw immediate gains in strength. Then I went off the deep end (weekend of garbage), hungry all the time, added cookies and Chips and gained 15 pounds. Now I'm struggling to curb the cravings and get back on track. I feel like low carb is my fix but I know I need to get back to the balance. I have a real eating problem and it happens quick if I slip up. I need a better coach to push me back on track.

I Can relate.. if I eat 2 pounds of meat daily and unlimited vegtables.. I will drop weight like a madman but maintain muscle and not feel hungry. I've found that training each muscle group 1nce a week helps recovery so you dont loose much strength. But when I add in carbs.. I do get more cravings unfortunately and it's hard to break the cycle of binge eating. The only carbs that keep me full longer are beans/quinoa/red potato.

Agreed he made a very interesting point about the water weight loss when switching to low carb after the first weight loss phase. Low carb is interesting mostly because it doesn't work in the calorie controlled lab environment, but works fantastically in the real world. So the problem becomes are we testing in the lab for what we want to accomplish in the population? If you test people's unrestricted food intake on low fat vs low carb it becomes pretty apparent the reason it works is that on low carb it becomes easier mentally for people to eat fewer calories, most times without noticing. I was eating nearly 1000 calorie deficit on low carb without knowing until I plugged in my food into cronometer. That's why the phcuk.org/rcts info aggregation was so interesting. Many of those are calorie restricted low fat vs low carb eating to satiety. That's what I find the most interesting is a large percentage of people restrict calories naturally when eating low carb, but that doesn't appear to occur in low fat. I wish they'd stop trying to prove that low carb makes you use more calories and instead focus on it's effects on satiety and do more research on other things. What percentage of the population gets those satiety benefits on low carb? How low do the carbs need to go before that occurs? Do you have to have some form of metabolic disregulation before that effect occurs? Does it matter what kind of carbs for how low you need to go to get the benefits?

Thanks for your work, Dr. Norton-especially your outreach. I'm a physicist, diabetic and quite obese. I've been trying to go through both popular and scientific literature, but even with scientific training, I'm slow to wade through literature outside of my expertise. I started with Dr. Fong's books and through low carb and alternate day fasting have managed to lose a lot of weight and get my serum glucose into low normal range without medication. I currently approximate keto, and I'm starting to move toward one meal per day/restricted feeding window. I'm quite disillusioned with Dr. Fong's theories, even though they were the basis for my early progress. Do you think low carb diets make more sense for Type II diabetics as a weight loss strategy? If I try to reintroduce a modest amount of carb, will I find that I'm still unable to cope with the blood sugar spikes? I don't expect you to know that for me individually, but I was wondering if you've seen research for people in my situation. P.S. your mom sounds sweet :)

I noticed that there are many fallacies in the design of the study. If they wanted to prove the endocrine model of obesity they should have selected: 1. Individuals with higher BMI. I believe that they mentioned that the BMI was +- 28. I wish I had a BMI of 28 2. I don’t see them screening for hyperinsulenimia. These individuals should be perfect to prove this point. In fact I believe that they excluded people with type two diabetes which normally fall in this population. 3. The caloric goals should have been one based on % but they describe using actual 2300-2400 calories. This was not correlated to individual needs. 4. They should had also done a follow up where they reverse the order - 4 weeks Keto to 4 weeks low fat. The order could have changes. 5. I heard but could not found that they fudge the data. Not sure how will this affect the validity of this research. Based on this, I believe that the proof that endocrine model is false is lacking. We still not sure if the endocrine models is real or not so the jury is still out. What is the energy expenditure for creating ketones and gluconeogenesis? I don’t think that this is accounted for in the standard calories in and calories out. Also, what are the side effects of taking insulin or medication that raises insulin? The answer is weight gain. So naturally speaking if someone eats a low carb meal and prevents glucose from rising (pre diabetic, type 2 and hyperinsulenemia), they will have lower numbers which means they could eventually lower the diabetes medication. Which means they will gain less weight and maybe loose more weight.

Layne, you said "you need to be in Airplane mode and use Wifi to not get charged" Well Airplane mode turns OFF WiFI! I think what you meant was you need to turn off Cell Data and only use WiFi

Ultra Male you can use WiFi while on airplane mode. When you turn your phone on airplane mode, it automatically turns off WiFi. But if you push that button. It comes right back up! I do it all the time when I’m overseas. 🤓

in a fasting situation someone with a good acess to the fat metabolism will be less catabolic. with a high carb diet your carb metabolism will always be the primary metabolism, so you will be less metabolic flexible.

they also have studies comparing keto to higher carb & there is still no difference in fat loss when calories and protein are equated

In your videos about reverse dieting you tell about keeping exercise and cardio routine same after show and increasing calories slowly. I have little question there Like before show calorie intake was 1800 with 1 hour cardio. Soo from cardio suppose 300 calories were burnt. Soo after show can we consume 1550 calories and eliminate all of cardio ? If we look at it we are still increasing calories by 50 ?

While I think studies like this provide useful data, weight maintenance is much more complicated than an equation. Physical and emotional satiety are the true drivers of energy intake self-selection and body fat setpoint in my opinion. What has been proven over and over is that regardless of the acute effects of a given diet or a given meal, increasing fiber and protein intake (relative to SAD) tend to decrease ghrelin secretion and total ad libitum energy intake. Now, even this is not enough on its own. No macronutrient ratio holds more power than the human mind. Even in the study authors' dream world where you manage to increase your TEE by 50 kcal/day AND your body does not metabolically adapt to that TEE (which I seriously doubt) to maintain your body fat setpoint, all of your efforts are undone with the weekly ingestion of a single donut. This is why I love the fact that Layne, Paul Revelia, etc, preach adherence and sustainability above all else, because as Layne has said in multiple videos, willpower is a finite resource. Many people that I know in the eating disorder community with binge-purge type bulimia nervosa actually started participating in B-P behaviors due to orthorexic, not anorexic behaviors - in layman's terms, it means they restricted the types of foods they ate, rather than total energy intake. While I believe physical satiety is very important, it is not enough on its own. There is a mental/emotional aspect to eating that has to be respected. As a cyclist I have always found a high carbohydrate diet has worked well for me. Despite deriving ~45% of my daily energy from carbohydrates, I maintain a healthy body fat level (15.4% by DXA tested recently) and my hemoglobin A1c when last tested was 4.6. I have never found any compelling evidence that my participation in a high carbohydrate diet is in any way detrimental to my health. To the contrary I find that any time I try to deviate from this diet, while my body can adapt, it simply doesn't result in optimal performance or recovery time for me in particular. I'm also not so narcissistic as to think that because my diet works for me, that it would be better for others as well. Absolutely not. In fact I know plenty of people in my life for whom my diet would likely be unhealthy.

Let's be fair here. A zealot who goes low carb, feels better and loses weight has every right to be excited. I was this way on a Zone Diet back in the 1990's. I didn't need a stinking study to interpret what happened to me. And, if it happened to me, **maybe** it could happen for.someone else, so why not recommend it and speak highly of it? I do agree that extrapolating out to the entire population of Earth is a bridge way too far. But, guess what? The only way to know if a diet works for **you** is to test it out to n good faith. No study will prove something works for any given person outside the study! I never went keto because 40-30-30ish has always worked well for me, and I can easily maintain it. The lesson here is that we have to use discernment and try diets that sound reasonable to see what impact it has on us. I do summarily recommend that people avoid foods fortified with microscopic rusty iron filings, though. Look up "Iron Behaving Badly Douglas B. Kell" for more information.

Personally i can say that the more carbs i eat the better i could sustain my weight and loose aswell, where as higher fat makes me gain rather quick, and for whatever reason my nipples gets puffy whenever i eat high fat. If i just eat a pizza i will have puffy nips for a few days. And if i were to go back to eating higher fat everyday id gain 2-4 lbs in a week plus constant puffy nipples.

My experience. I was laid off from work Jan 1 2018. I was at 257lb. Had labs done, doc said I had high hdl and LDL and a fatty liver. Subscribed to dr. Bergs channel and started intermittent fasting for two weeks on maintenance calories(down to 252lb)then I added his keto diet plan with 16/8 fast daily for two months(down to 222lb). At that point I was eating around 3200 calories on lifting days. In march I started working full time as a chef and still lifting after work (keto+16/8 fast) so I increased my daily calorie to 4,200 with Thomas Delaware keto workout advice. Fasted lifts -First set- 4 reps 80%/ 2nd&3rd sets 20 reps 70% effort. I started seeing lean gain(stayed at 220lb) until thanksgiving. Today I'm at 236lb. Legs, chest and back grow a lot and seeing alot of soft fat around upper torso.

I do agree that if one picks quality animal foods low carb is superior if one enjoys raw wild fish and raw beef it's by far superior. Plants made it painful me to walk cutting them out I don't have body pain it's amazing.I willing to eat raw eggs yorks raw beef and raw wild fish slightly cooked bacon. When I mix egg yorks with kefir my mind kind crave more fats. What's great about eating like this I don't desire carbs. I the gain from plants is so tiny that I feel they should only be in the diet if you grow them your self to ensure they are not being sprayed with chemicals.

I agree that there are keto and low-carb zealots out there who rave so much about eating that way you would expect the diet to clean the kitchen floor and pay the bills for you; well, almost. And WTF is double labeled water? I assume it is not the same thing as heavy water, but all I can imagine is one label glued over another one on those annoying plastic water bottles that people leave everywhere.

Not watched video yet but will do later. I keep hearing low carb is better for my type 2 diabetes. But if I do fasted cardio in the morning steady paced 45-60 mins I've noticed I can go McDonalds and have a sweet chilli chicken wrap and apple pie and not spike my blood sugars so much at all where as before they'd shoot way above 10. Last night i had a bic mac large meal and an apple pie and some Galaxy chocolate and bloods went to 10.2 (Uk) woke up 1kg lighter today lol.

It's kinda bothersome to see that people can manipulate studies in such a way to produce a desirable outcome... Think about other areas of sciences where this is happening and negatively impactng the masses.
