This will be a new series covering the basic science of how fat loss works. In episode 1 we discuss how energy balance works. Many people have attempted to dismiss 'calories in calories out' or debunk it. These people really don't understand how thermodynamics work. He's way off. It's NOT calories in : calories out! It's energy partitioning. Did you know that your body responds to restricted calories by slowing down metabolism? So, calories out lowers as well, all by itself. Equation is false even ignoring insulin, etc.

Anyone else noticed the scale tilting is backwards?, the drawing only I mean the info was correct (if you decrease the left side then that side should move up not down), anyway great video glad I found your channel Layne.

The only thing wrong with this video, is that it wasn’t up before. Wish I had this information back when I started to try and lose weight. Thorough, simple, accurate.

The scale doesn't operate that way; it should be the reverse. When there's a greater energy output, the 'energy out' side of the scale should go down. Similarly, when you consume more calories, the 'energy in' side should also go down, pulling the other side up. Fat loss is assessed by how much the left side of the scale moves up. The further up the left side is, the greater your energy deficit, leading to more weight loss. Think of a curved measuring tool on the left side of the scale; the further up it measures, the more significant the energy deficit.

Well done! Hit the nail on the head. Every student should be taught this in high school. We need to stop listening to marketing campaigns and gimmicks. Start listening to the science.

You often hear phrases like "a calorie is a calorie" thrown around but this video is one of the best at going into detail of why that is, and why there is so much confusion around some of these concepts. Lane breaks down the science in an entertaining and clear way and answered many of the questions I had on this topic. Greatly appreciate the videos! I am learning a lot!

Great video! As someone who’s experienced the eat less and exercise more and still not lose any weight phenomenon, this really helped explain maybe why that was happening. Can’t wait for more! Would love to hear more about how to figure out a proper calorie deficit. Also, drop the background music in the next video...too distracting and not needed.

I want to be an MMA fighter but I want lose 60-70lbs of fat before i do so during that process I want to work on my skills. I had no good knowledge of losing weight when i was wrestling in high school so any advice you’d like to share would be helpful.

You transformed the way I looked at the process of weight loss.. I finally feel like I'm in control now that i'm not externalizing the cause of weight gain to "carbs".. Causing me to have a black and white mindset

This is great Layne. I've been a PT for a tiny 3 years. Have learned via absorbing all kinds of information and stuff over my own experiences and with clients on how to do this and explain this. Layne, Thank you,! Great explanation, really well done. I can't wait for the more in-depth videos. If I have one complaint, it is that the music is too loud and distracting. I don't think you cater to the type of audience that needs annoying music filler.

Calorie in calorie out hypothesis was first stated by Max Rubner in 1874 called isodynamic law, this was prior to any understanding of the human hormone system. It’s drastically flawed and totally inaccurate, the sad part is individuals like this “educated person” think they have been taught the “truth and facts”, however they are completely unaware of many other hypothesis that are more recent (then a 125 years ago) that actually understand and include the hormone system and are far more accurate. I have made suggestions to study other hypothesis and this guy refuses to and only accepts this 125 year old idea. Pitiful, this ideas in this video is why people struggle to loose fat, this is not how your body works!

Matthew David it doesn’t matter how old a hypothesis is. You’re making it seem as if the hypothesis as never been put through any RECENT case studies. The hypothesis is studied more often than most because of the constant “versus” battle between calories in/calories out. It works. It’s literally what EVERY bodybuilder uses during there contest prep and their main job is to LOSE BODY FAT....How can you argue with that? And show me your PhD on the subject when you do so......Thanks....

Wraps up taxes/expenses metaphor with "it just... it makes sense" 😂🤣😂. It's funny because I say the same thing after I try to explain something complex but end up on some almost related side rant. Overall, though, great info. I love when things are thoroughly explained rather than the "just trust me" spiel. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

This video was great Layne thanks! Not that its any NEW information to me because I already had a good handle on the biology of metabolism, but I work at a supplement retailer so I deal with peoples expectations of fat loss and all the typical conundrums that happen in their heads to make up why they aren’t losing weight, and this will help me immensely in explaining it to them step by step! 👍🏼

Tried the whole not counting calories keto diet, what I found was I lost water weight drastically, however I looked very flat, didnt get good pumps and didnt even lose fat. Counting calories is a must. Period.

Thank you Sir! I just had some people from “Zeroing in on health”, a Facebook group, tell me that calories in and calories out and basal metabolic rate is a total myth and nothing you had to say was relevant because you don’t eat zero carb. I used to not understand why you railed against nonsense all the time but I get it now!

Would love to see an episode on fat GAIN that factors in rates of lipogenesis depending on macronutrients consumed (ie - higher fat vs higher protein/carb, etc).
