Hunt Couplings now do Hunt Couplings Elite which does away with the polarity issues, so you can have rolling stock either way and there’s no issue.

Sorry to hear Jenny get better soon! As for the couplings... great to see some competition on the market!

Thank you Jenny, one of the irresoluble issues are the coupling issues, this probably help to resolve them.

Great coupling Jenney would not a spring behind the coupling may help solve the problem of buffer lock by limiting the range of travel on the coupling shalf.

Hi Jenny - I have tried these and they work very well. And I wish you a speedy recovery...........Cheers Kev

The buffer lock is because the couplers move in the pockets. The whole idea of the NEM is to create a rigid, fixed coupling bar, that levers the stock apart when it is being pushed through curves and pointwork. One way to fix this issue would be to add a collar to the coupler to set it into the pockets or at least limit the distance they can slide. i.e. when they are being pushed, they should only be able to slide together so far as to not allow the buffers to touch. With the couplers fixed at a certain point, the gap would be consistent throughout the whole train as well. By rights, NEM pockets ought to be located a standard distance from the buffers anyway.

Absolutely right and entirely sensible. It's hard to believe it was thought acceptable to allow so much sliding movement that coupling would become impossible. That should never have happened.

Enjoyed your review. I moved onto the Hunt standard couplings earlier last year, but now changing over to their Elite. Their dual polarity with buckeye, are so realistic.

Hi Jenny thanks for another great review. I have been looking at these type of couplings, so having another make on offer is great. Well be looking at getting some of both makes for comparison. Get well soon, best wishes Gary.

Hi Jenny, Interesting review. Indeed some positive to build a permanent rake running forward. But for shunting good wagons...ummm, no. Overall I'll stick with Kadee's. They are, in the end, still the most reliable and easiest to use couplers. Thanks for sharing, well done! Greetings

Hi Jenny, thanks for an excellent review. I will try these. Sorry about your bout with Shingles. I had them a number of years ago and still remember the experience. Certainly “no fun.” Hope you get better very quickly.

Thanks Jenny, very interesting and food for thought. Sorry to hear you’ve had shingles, I hope you’re feeling better now. I’ve had shingles three times in my life and I know it really isn’t nice. Get as much rest as possible, otherwise it’ll drag on and your recovery will take longer. Take care x

I bought some rivals a while ago and used them for the first time last weekend. For me, they were a great way to connect my converted Baldwin Pershing 2-8-0 to pull other HO stock. However, I mainly bought them to put onto a 6 year old's stock because he is always breaking the Hornby couplings. With these, he can pull them apart easy and of course the couple very easily . The polarity isn't an issue at all because they have an A or B on them.

Perhaps the big manufacturers will eventually supply their models with a coupling design like this as standard and do away with tension locks? These mag couplings are clever but quite expensive and that might put many off fitting them to an entire rake or even their whole fleet.

Hi Jenny, glad to see you are on the mend, I am interested in these couplings for some of my rolling stock. As my loco's and RTR rolling stock are all pre China build I am having to convert everything to a more realistic look, even down to the conversion of most of my loco fleet to DCC. With regard to the occasional buffer-lock problem a solution to this could be securing either a thin bronze strip strip between the buffers of each vehicle, I have seen similar to this used with I think Sprat and Winkle couplings. It's worth a try. A very interesting video Jenny, take care and get well soon.

Well it would be worth getting some of these but what is best for uncoupling rolling stock somewhere you can’t reach. I.e remotely?

Jen,wish you would try the Fleischmann 6515 NEM profi coupling since i found these couplings its shown me what a modern coupling should be,all my rubbish tension lock, roco ugly couplings,in the bin,has for these magnetic, keen system, just a joke.the 6515 is so good give it a try, easy coupling, uncoupling, superb German engineering,i am sorry to say,we are being let down by english manufacturars in this area!

Hmmm, how often are you going to propel a 6 carriage train up a 4% gradient with tight curves? End of the day, everything's a compromise and I have to say, I like the look of these because you dont have to mess around making sure you have a north south magnet on each coach. Pricing will be important though.

Hi Jenny, I have been thinking about making my own magnetic couplings. So this video was very pertanant. It occures to me that these couplings could be modified to overcome the snags that you have uncovered so I could buy these and modify them instead of building from scratch which could be cheaper but time consuming. My wagons and coaches number in the low hundreds so making my own couplins could be a mega project and will border on the tedious. If time is not money to the retired, it does rob attention to the layout and keeping the other half happy. Love your videos but do wish your intro was shorter to save hitting the fast forward, lol. Best regards...

Your young to get shingles !! I had it last year but give you a clue about me :-) you can get a vaccination if you are 70 or over. but I had to wait 6 months after the bout to get one. Its a very unpleasant thing to have. You can only get it if you have had chicken Pox as I understand - it is not a infectious disease .

They would be OK on modern stock because we gave lost the buffer. So NO Buffer lock Then. Yes what do you think. Most of our stock don't have Buffers anymore.

Shingles are bad news, hope you recover fully quickly. I'm looking for a good solution to the wretched tension lock couplings on cheaper Hornby wagons, do I cut off the couplings and glue something else on?

You refer to the “other” magnetic couplings. Do you know whether those couplings are still being manufactured? I ordered some on July 12 and having not received them chased them. I have had no email response, the phone number quoted is switched off and a text has received no response. I’m not expecting you to become a consumer champion but it might be interesting to know whether Magnem are now the only effective option

Great video as always but like others will stick to Kadees I think. Shingles is very unpleasant and painful - I had it in my late 20s but you can get it again of course. Once you get to 70 like this old fart you can have a vaccination - well worth it as it can be very bad for old folk. However a long time for you yet young'un. Take care! And get well soon - it takes a while so rest up when you can.
