I had the same lever issues with my Magura MT8’s. So I ended up pairing the MT8 callipers with Shimano Deore M6100 levers. So far so good. It feels amazing! Definitely the best of both worlds 👌🏻

have you tried any bike with mt5/7 with Shimano levers, to compare to yours? I thinking of buying Mt4(same caliper i think) and convert straight away to Shimano levers. 2 pot only for weight reasons, but it must have good stopping power as it going on an ebike(total weight about 95kg). Does anyone know if these 2pots from Magura have more clearance to rotor than the MT7?

I converted mine to a Shingura set up, with XTR levers great feel and power. I had a Megura fail at the top of a shuttle, cheap racks and bikes slapping each other another time the lever just failed and stated leaking. Congratulations to stepping up and a huge upgrade with TRP’s!!

I am building my dream bike a Titanium Litespeed full suspension mountain bike, ($300 never used, NOS-not bad for a $3,000 frame, it also came with a Shimano crank and king headset). I bought my 2001 Specialized Rock Hopper Disc with Magura Julie’s. This was a time when hydraulic discs just came out, (road bikers said they would heat up, burn and/or cut your leg open. Fast forward 23 years and now pretty much all bikes come with discs, (I don’t understand using cables tho), my logic is like in 2001, you would never buy a car without hydraulic discs would you. The Julie’s never gave me problems, never leaked. In fact the oldest and top repair shop here in Hawaii said if it doesn’t leak, don’t change the mineral oil. I did change the black plastic levers to silver aluminum because it looked better and are stronger. Julie’s are bottom of the line and to adjust it from dragging you have to change shims. During the 1 year warranty, even the Specialized dealer couldn’t stop it from dragging, so I did it myself, couldn’t be harder than working on my 57 Porsche, right?! I got some used Shimano 2 pistons at the same Swap Meet but for my first custom bike build I am open to anything, thanks for posting this. I am a believer in Magura, (did you know they make the whole bike in Germany-as well as disc brakes for skateboards)?

I'm trying the Magura caliper with the Shimano XT M8100 with Flo Motorsports 120 levers. I recommend checking the Flo Motorsports levers they spring back to lessen the chance of lever blade snapping, and they have some cool colors as well.

I wonder how many people with Magura lever problems have installed them themselves & tightened the screws too much? When i got my Magura MT5s i had them bled & installed by a LBS that specialises in Magura, & he had them on so that when i crashed a few months later, the lever just moved upwards & had to be re-adjusted & tightened. the next 3 times i crashed on the same bike the same thing happened. . When i bought a new 2nd hand YT Tues DH that had SRAM Code Rs, i used them for 2 runs & i was like no, SRAM Code are terrible, so i had the brakes swapped over before i sold my old bike.. Ive since had a crash that partially tore my left PCL, so it was a doozy, involving gravity & rocks, that even chipped the bottom of the fork lower, at the point where the axle slides in, luckily not enough that the lower needs replacing. And the same levers from over a year of reasonably regular riding, 7 weeks of it chainless, all of it learning, alot of it on steep techy rocky terrain, & at least 4 crashes, one requiring an MRI & a physio plan, & almost damaging my fork lowers where the axle fits through.. And my stock MT5 levers are still going strong, albeit a little scratched.. I'm going to upgrade to the Loic Bruni lever blades at some point, but that's personal choice for feel. The only upgrades on the MT5 that i really need to do is swap out the standard Shimano 1.8 thick/203mm diameter rotors for a 2.0 thick/203 dia rotor, either the Magura Storm, Magura MDR-P floating rotors (have read differing opinions on floating rotors though, as applied to MTB vs Motocross, & its interesting to see that no UCI Downhill riders seem to be using them) , Galfer Wave fixed rotors, or if the caliper spacing is big enough, the TRP fixed rotors, & ive already upgraded the rear pads to Galfer performance single metallic pads, & noticed a decent difference to the stock Magura double pads.. But the levers themselves, have taken a fair beating & are totally fine, with all the same modulation & feel as new.. So I think that people who regularly brake the levers simply tighten them too much so that they cant move on impact. Which is probably the same to be honest with most levers. Tighten them only so much that they don't move with hand pressure, but so they do with direct impact. That is the key. My apologies if you've done all that, maybe you've just had bad luck, but as i say mine are still going strong a year & a bit later over 4 decent crashes & 2 bikes.. As for your using the brakes less o improve your skill, take it up a notch & ride chainless for a while if you have the descents to enable it. On my old bike the derailleur broke & for the same reason during covid, parts shortages of everything, whether i bought in NZ or bought online from UK, where all the best deals come from, there was a delay in getting a 10 speed derailleur, especially Saint, but even ZEE too, & i thought i may as well upgrade the cassette & narrow-wide front chainring while i was at it.. So for 7 weeks i rode chainless, on both flow trails & techy downhills, & man was that an eye opener. It forces you to pump, & take corners better & not rely on pedalling, & you brake far less to carry speed, & when you do brake you brake more efficiently. Landing jumps is a bit sketchy because you have no chain tension, but your suspension works so much plusher, you have to run it tighter it works so well, & all in all i found myself doubling my previous strava times & improving almost every time, skills i took with me once i got back on the chain. The level of progression in 7 weeks chainless was easily equivalent to 7 months previously & im not even joking.. Try it chainless for a bit, you'll be amazed at your progression..

I’m currently using their MT thirty series brake on a cube 55 race, so far not feeling any discomfort or problems with it maybe it’s my problem cuz I’ve just started riding like a couple mouths a go but I would still give them a shout out for all of the new riders in the world. The purpose that I wrote this is to remind you’ll good brake or not it’s all about personal preference and the thing about magura disk brakes is that they claps softer because they’re more optimised for enduro style of riding for God’s sake! ! Ah, can believe there are ignorrntes on the internet who actually believe in what ever some RU-vidr says 🙄🙄🙄

I had Magura MT7 HC3. Lever sustained damage to the master cylinder. Made an audible clicking sound when I would compress the lever and lost braking power (air got into system). Switched to Hayes dominion and haven't looked back. Their aluminum levers are more durable in my opinion.

I’ve had mt7 masters go bad 3 times during race runs, and countless other times. After an impact, either a crash or a big drop, the brake just has no power whatsoever. Or it will lock up fine but when you try to modulate the lever goes to the bar. Kinda scary in a race haha. It’s disappointing because I believe they have amazing power and control, but the reliability is just not there.
@UpHillWill
@UpHillWill 2 года назад
You are right very disappointing, I ran the TRP DH on my downhill bike all winter with the same pads and no bleeds. As a matter fact I just did both yesterday I can't believe how worn the pads had gotten, I Did not notice at all. I guess that thick 223 rotor was worth it after all. But I will still say nothing feels as good as the Mt7's.

Big Sram fan. I’m currently running G2 Ultimates in Gray. Stumpy evo alloy s4 and I’m about 216lbs. in the nude. I’ve never had issues stopping when i have one of those big O moments. Buddy installed the TRP DHR Evo’s on his enduro and i have to say, those would be my next brake sets i would go with. Love the modulation and stopping power. For some reason they felt similar to my G2 Ultimates, but i love the TRP levers better and surprisingly got really comfortable with them quick. Most importantly with any brake set you go with. Don’t forget to bed in your brakes. Improper bedding will make any expensive brakes feel like 💩

I've ran mt7s for 4 years and had some really nasty crashes. The last one was with hc3 levers (which don't flex in a crash) was so bad that the lever bent in a u-shape! But no issues with snapping parts etc. People run their masters too tight on the bars; the lever doesn't stand a chance. You only need the clamp tight enough so it doesn't rotate when you're riding.. no tighter.

Im surprised Magura still makes their MT7s with stupid plastic master cylinders and levers. Every RU-vidr Ive watched reviewing them seems to have broken a lever.
