There are 3 basic types of crown materials. First is the metal crown, this includes the gold crowns. Second is the all ceramic crowns, and the third is the porcelain fused metal crowns. The metal crowns are the most popular. They are basically economical. The disadvantage is it is unaesthetic. The second type of crowns, that is the all ceramic crowns, they have gained lot of popularity, primarily because of its good aesthetics. The disadvantage is that it has a tendency to abrade the opposing tooth structure. The third type of crowns, the PFM crowns. The PFM crowns use the advantages of both ones. Now it has an inner substructure of metal and thee outer structure is made of ceramic. Here again, the advantage is good aesthetics, but the disadvantage is it can abrade the opposing tooth structure. The newer crowns what we have today is computer made crowns, or the CAD-CAM crowns or the Computer assisted crowns. They are the future of dental crowns.
