Is there such a thing as a healthful beverage? All other mammals consume only two liquids over the course of their lives: breast milk and water. The evidence for telling humans that some beverages are necessary and that others should be avoided isn’t nearly as clear as many believe.

It is healthy sugar but becomes unhealthy because phytonutrients are stripped away. When you eat whole fruit, if there is excess sugar, it will bind to phytonutrients and pass through the body. There was a study done where folks were fed 22 servings vegetables and 22 servings fruit DAILY with no adverse effects including no weight gain. There's another study done that shows type 2 diabetics shouldn't limit fruit because it doesn't adversely affect them as well because phytonutrients bind to excess sugar and pass it through the body. The food product closest to the source is usually healthiest and the refinement of foods make them unhealthy.

@@namehere4954 could you cite that study? If it's legit I'd like to read it, but as far as I know sugar is harmful in excess for a variety of reasons. Not just weight gain because of the calories, but also an increased chance of heart disease, diabetes, etc. There is no "healthy" sugar because no matter what the source is they have a high caloric value, could cause disease, and do little for you other than give you calories. Sure, fiber and other nutrients from fruits are good, but you can get those from other sources. Historically milk got labeled healthy back when animal protein and fat were rare in the diet of the urban poor. It made sense then to subsidies and promote more milk in the diet, it was a cheap way to prevent malnutrition. Maybe there are places in the world where this is still true but not in the Western world.
@namehere4954
@namehere4954 3 года назад
No. Milk was a byproduct of the beer industry. Cows were brought into cities to eat spent grains from beer production. They milked the cows and gave the milk to infants who's mother's couldn't breastfeed. This lead to a 40% infant mortality rate which then lead to pasteurization. In the 1930s/40s the dairy lobby (the oldest & most effective lobby group) pushed congress to get their product into schools. It was then marketed to folks as if we were drinking it since the beginning of time when in fact we haven't. This summation is from Milk: Nature's Perfect Food by Melanie DuPuis. Also, ALL plants have protein so people aren't really ever protein deficient unless they're literally starving to death. Plant protein is superior to animal protein as it comes bundled with phytonutrients.

I feel a lot of what is happening now is older giant industries don't want to change for the more informed consumers. The industry selling cows milk doesn't want people to stop drinking it, even though it also is used in making cheese and yogurts. This can be seen in everything from how our electricity and gas are being produced (into possibly solar & hydrogen options) and in the meat industry where new alternatives options will eventually replace the mass slaughtering of animals. The hope is science and education will begin to change what used to be seen as normal in the future, but people are really going to have to demand and support the smaller growing options first.

Fruit = Healthy, Juice = Not healthy. Does that mean whatever is left after the pressing is some super food?
@lizmerrick6883
@lizmerrick6883 3 года назад
Its mostly due to how the sugar hits you. There are vitamins in juice but they're counteracted by the huge spike in blood sugar. Plus you end up consuming more (it takes several apples to make the juice in one cup.) Fruit has not only the vitamins, but fiber and more phytochemicals. Plus the sugar is introduced into your blood stream at a slower rate which is less taxing on your system.
@bramvanduijn8086
@bramvanduijn8086 2 года назад
Define super food. What does food do that super food does better? Food is stuff you can eat to get calories, the requirement for specific micronutrients is entirely secondary. Does that mean super food has more calories? On the other hand, if you insist it is about the trivial goal of micronutrients then you still need to prove that in that case more is better. I'd say that there are clear micronutrient examples where more is worse. Like fat-soluble vitamins, they quickly become poisonous.

But fruit juice has potassium (unlike soda), which almost everyone gets way too little off, some even less than others. So it's not just empty calories, but I agree that vegetbles have a much better sugar/potassium ratio, and even whole fruits are better for you because dietary fiber is also anti-inflammatory, and the dietary limits in whole fruits calory consumption more by filling up the stomach and intestines more than juice does I'd say, much better to drink fruit juice than soda, but the high sugar still makes it something that should be a treat, like candy

So I’ve got a question. Do other nations like in Europe or Asia have the relationship America has with milk and dairy in general? Because I feel like most of the milk propaganda can be traced back to dairy farmers lobbying Congress to help advertise milk at a time people were drinking less, when it’s nowhere near as healthy as they, the doctors, the advertisers, and so many other groups said it is. I wonder if any other countries have experienced something like this. Personally, I like milk but I know that I have to switch to an alternative at some point because cow milk is by far the worst milk for the environment but also knowing I’ve been lied to about it’s health benefits ever since I was a kid helps too.

Between milk and synthetic milk, that is. Water is still far more environmentally friendly than any other option except maybe the juice you could extract from invasive species.

Alcohol for adults is not really equivalent to soda for children, I'd argue.

Drinking the milk from another mammal is ridiculous when you think about it. Switch to plant-based milk. For your kids, see a nutritionist to make sure they eat what they need. Juice is just sugar, not any better than other sugars. Eat the fruit instead, or do like me and make smoothies using complete frozen fruits.

Did you not watch the video? Switch to water for daily consumption and leave all other beverages on the "special treats" list.

I clicked on this video, and as of this comment, I haven't heard Aaron say ANYTHING, but I am guessing right off and recording this that at some point, he's gonna go on a rant about Big Milk and the Milk Industry.

Plant milks actually are "more healthy and special" because they are so much better for the planet that we live on. Even almond milk, which has the biggest environmental impact, has a tiny tiny tiny tiny impact compared to cow's milk. You have to take emissions into account when you talk about health, so many floods and wildfires this year, clean drinking water getting more scarce and more expensive, these are health concerns. Also most soy milks are fortified, it's just the "organic" ones that aren't.

It's weird for me that when Americans and Europeans talk about juice, they talk about the processed (industrial) kind. For me the freshly made juice is the only juice, the other is just a sham.

I'm gonna have to put a firm foot down on this one. While your conclusions are mostly valid, comparing Milk, Juices, and other drinks to ALCOHOL is Extremely irresponsible. What you are telling people with substance use disorders is that the drink they're addicted to is no more harmful than the stuff they put in their cereal. You should have known better, Aaron. And you really, REALLY should address this.

Wow, that's what you heard from: "Every beverage other than water and breast milk might be treated they way you treat alcohol for adults." What you've done is reversed the statement to identify that you could treat alcohol the way you treat milk instead of the other way around.
