Handy way to get your wrist measurement is to use an elastic band on your wrist. Place the yard stick virtically at your side on the floor. Slide the elastic band over it on the inside of your wrist. Making sure the stick stays on the floor, just slide your hand down it as you take your normal standing position. Then just grab the stick and read what the measurement is at your wrist.

I used to play with bladed clubs in my teens but stopped playing in my late teens as Golf got in the way of other things we discover as teenagers . Fast forward another 15 years I went to a golf shop 25years ago or so ( its closed down now) to buy some new clubs. They were one of the first shops to have a virtual range in a room at the back of the shop. Anyway i told the shop guy I wanted something not too expensive as I was starting to play again but wasn't expecting it to be much more than a dozen or so casual games a year. So he selected a few Irons and some drivers And got me hitting some balls I'm actually quite short so a lot of the clubs I gripped quite low After a while he disappeared and came back waving a 5 or 6 iron and said try this. These clubs seemed pretty good I was hitting the ball well and pretty straight. "What do you think of those?" he said. I asked "Can I try the matching woods?" so he came back with a 3 and 5 wood which I found to also suit my swing. Anyway Turned out they were last seasons demo model they were budget clubs shop soiled and he had no realistic chance of selling them So I walked out of the shop with a full set of clubs for about a 1/4 of what I thought I would be spending. The next day I was up the range hitting balls clubs were great and I was pleased with my bargain Howeer the Following Week I turned up to play Golf with the workmate who had convinced me to take the game up again Who said "Are those Women's Clubs?" Which of course they were! Funny enough I've still got them and played with them last week. They are actually about an inch too short as my hands are right on the ends of the grips.

One other factor is waist height. Somebody with an unusually high or low waist height (bend point) needs club lengths reflecting that. Two people the same height with the same arm length can have different hand height from the ground at address if they have an unusual waist height (low or high). The percentage of golfers with unusual waist height is small, but it is important for them. Your comments on posture are also important for club length.

@bobpegram8042
@bobpegram8042 2 года назад
@@kipdole Sounds likely. Arm length and how flat your swing plane is also come into play. When you use irons with standard lie angles do you have to choke down on the clubs to get the sole flat on the ground at impact (with heel and toe divot depth the same)? If so, that would work, or you could get the lie angles bent flatter to avoid shortening them (or having to choke up on th grip). Might be worth experimenting with a club or two (long iron and short iron) to see which way makes your impact the most consistent. (I am the other extreme. I am 6'-1/2" tall with my waist 45 inches from the ground and relatively short arms. I have to use longer clubs to use standard lies. My swing is not upright. I have to contort my swing to use standard length clubs (and it hurts my back.) My consistency increased a lot when I went to longer clubs. I don't hit it farther, except for extra roll in the fairway. I use X-flex graphite shafts in everything to keep the weight down. Woods are a model with adjustable sole weights to further reduce weight. My driver is 47.5 with proportional fairways and hybrids. My irons are 1-1/2" over length (39-1/2" 5 iron). The longer lengths also protect my back. I hate the 46" optional limit. If I enter a tournament with that limit my driver and 3 wood will both be 46".)

Or does getting the shaft flowed or spine help at all in any club? Lots of places ask you if you want it when you test drivers and get an upgraded shaft but it’s always and up-charge. Hi AJ, I used the wrist to floor measurements and looked at a few charts. Unfortunately the charts only have WTF that stops 31 inches. My WTF, is 30.5 inches. Hoever, before I cut my clubs. I'm going to use tape to make them as they are. The tape will show me where the cut would be. So I can chocking down where I've taped them on the grip. This will allow me to hit my clubs before i cut them. I am certain that my clubs are to long me, a 5 feet 5 and 1/2 Inches. So should I be using the .75 inches mesurement, is for a WTF of 31 inches? I really in joy learning about club making from watching your videos. I would love to own my own Golf pro shot one day, maybe whe I retire. Thanks for posting up all those great videos.

You've got the right idea. Tape off the distance and try it out. That will mimic both the length and the balance of the shorter club. Only real difference is the grip will feel a bit smaller because of the taper. The charts are just a guide, actually trying out lengths in hand is the best way to figure it out. Really focus on the shortest club if you are unsure as that is where the change will be most apparent.

If i buy for example the new ping g425 but i want the shaft at 44 1/2 is the swing weight less than their standard model? What adjustments do they do to bring it back to the standard swing weight if needed? Is it better to use a counterbalanced shaft or a regular shaft when I want to buy a club with less than standard length? Thanks love the channel
@EFGMC
@EFGMC 3 года назад
They would weight it to what you request within reason. Obviously, some combinations will not be possible. Ping heads are heavy and all the matching Ping shafts are counter balanced because of that. If you go an inch shorter, you will drop around 6 SWPs. Going with a more neutral or tip heavy shaft will help negate that. Ping would also have other interchangeable weights for the head to get where you want it. That's primarily how they do it.

If they feel uncomfortable and the quality of your strike is suffering, I would consider extending them a little. Don't feel like you have to extend everything evenly. More and more people are experimenting with not traditional club length progression. Decide what the shortest club is that still feels good to you, and either extend the shorter ones to that length or drop to say 1/4 inch progression instead of 1/2 inch. Might require slight adjustments in lie and loft depending on how much length you add just fyi. SW will also go up slightly.

I went to the range and start hitting shanks 30% of the time. I have not hit a shank consistently in five years. I took out my old clubs. I hit the new 7 iron, and my old 7 iron. I shanked the new club but not my old club. My old clubs standard and were off the rack too. Well, I laid the new and old 7 iron side by side; my old club is a half inch longer. Could this be causing the shank? Thanks for your help
@EFGMC
@EFGMC Год назад
A shank is usually more likely to occur when I club is too long vs too short, however it could be an issue of weight or swing weight. If the new club feels lighter and you lose feel for where the club head is during the swing, that could cause these issues. I would give them a couple range sessions to get used to them and if still having issues, try some lead tape on the back of the club and see if that helps.

I can’t say. Some people like to choke, others prefer to hold the grip near the end. Biggest difference between the two is going to be the smaller grip diameter when choking down the shaft more.

You can just get the current set extended if you don't want to drop a bunch of money on a new set. Very simple job to extend clubs, usually will run around $7-$10 per club plus the cost of new grips. Guessing if you're over 6' you may want some larger grips also since the starter sets just come standard.

Persimmon I am no expert on. I never worked on any as by the time I started doing club work around 2001, it had all but disappeared. I would assume refinishing the heads would be very similar to refinishing any wood furniture. As far as if it worth the time and effort, if they have personal value to you or you just enjoy the work, then sure, go for it. If you are hoping to increase their value, I wouldn't bother. All you need is either steel or plastic (for graphite) extensions. Just make sure you know the butt diameter of the shaft so you can get the correct size extension. Depends on the club. Irons and wedges usually should all be the same (so 1/2 inch across the board). Hybrids and woods could go shorter, but don't have to. Really depends on how your contact is. @@lorenzoontiveros7875 You can get them to fit. Just want to make sure they will be long enough for what you want if you are buying used shaft pulls. Also make sure you drill out all the tips so you have a clear vent hole for pressure release during assembly.

@EFGMC 2 года назад
Your hands get closer to the ball and therefore could use a shorter shaft just as if you naturally had long arms, again moving your hands closer to the ball.

If you shorten a club, at what point do you have to adjust the lie angle and by how much? Is there a formula for that? Also, if you determine that you should shorten a 9 iron by half an inch, which makes it the same length as your PW (as originally built by the manufacturer), do you have to cut down the PW also, or would it be OK to leave them both at the same length since you know you can make good contact using the PW at that length?
@EFGMC
@EFGMC 3 года назад
For the first question, the rule is 1/2 inch of shaft change = 1 degree of lie change. Shortening causes the lie to play flatter. However this assumes the golfer's posture at impact does not change with the new length club. If it does change, that rule is void. As for the second question, you can make your irons whatever lengths you want. There are no rules saying you need to have 1/2 inch progressions through the set. That's why some people play one length sets, or use a 1/4 or 3/8 length progression. Just be aware that the swing weight will change when you start making these changes so you may need to readjust SW once you've decided on what length progression works best.

Interesting but disappointing, why did I measure my wrist length? How is that measurement used to determine the right length shaft?
@EFGMC
@EFGMC 3 года назад
It's a starting point and probably the best static measurement. But from there the golfer really has to make a determination based on how the clubs feel on the long end and short end of the set.

Shoes on. Doesn't need to be golf shoes though, any athletic style will yield similar results.

@@EFGMC I’ve been playing for about a year with standard hand me down clubs. I’m 6’3” with a 37” wrist to floor and I feel like I’m more of a standup posture when I play. These have to be too short for me, right?
@EFGMC
@EFGMC 2 года назад
@@worldnomad2301 The simplest answer is, if you think they are too short, then they are too short. Especially in the 8,9,PW I would guess you feel a little uncomfortable at setup. I might glue in a couple extensions into a couple irons and cut the extension to make the length 1 inch longer. Go try that, see how the length and weight feel. If it seems too long, grip down a half inch and try that. Find the length that gives you the most consistent face contact results and then you can either extend, reshaft, or buy new clubs at the right length. Also would just mention if you are playing standard size grips, you may want to go up and try some midsize or oversize. This can also make a huge difference in consistency.

The "wrist joint" you reference is about 1.5" long, so unless you can identify an exact point in the joint that you're supposed to use, this is a highly inaccurate method.

All the measurements for wrist to floor are done in ranges so you don't need to worry about small discrepancies. Aim for the middle of the joint and you will be fine.

I’m sorry, but this is all way too complicated. For high handicappers like myself who are constantly adjusting our posture or swing path trying to get a more consistent strike getting fitted for club length or any other club metric (lie angle) doesn’t make sense. Sure if you are a low handicap player and have a consistent swing it makes sense to get fitted otherwise just get standard length and lie. If the clubs are too long just choke up and unless you’re 6 feet plus with gorilla arms it’s unlikely you will need shorter clubs. Perfect your swing first and when you have that down pat, then get fitted.
