Tweeters are the most likely to be blown by clipping, woofers are usually burned up by amplifier fault where an O/P transistor shorts (only in split supply amps)

If it sounds bad, you might be damaging the speaker, turn it down. If it smells, you’re probably damaging the voice coil, turn it down. I burned out the voice coils of two beautiful car subs back in the ‘90s. And I did it unintentionally with the Metallica “Justice for All” album! The subs were probably getting killed with amp clipping but I didn’t notice and didn’t turn it down. Goodbye Jensen sub, you were good. Goodbye Cerwin Vega replacement sub, you were phenomenal!!!! To test to see if they are "blown," stage your gain on your amp and head unit properly (basically set them in order of flow so that they are just below the point at which they don't clip, first the head unit with amp at nominal gain, then turn up amp to just below clipping, do a search for more details), and then play a tone sweep (search RU-vid). Your speaker tone will change drastically at particular frequency ranges. This indicates they are blown. You'll probably notice some differences from left to right. Turns out my left speaker isn't blown at all but my right one is and shows in a couple places.
@AxiomHomeTheaters
@AxiomHomeTheaters 3 года назад
Excellent advice, I would just exercise caution with the playback levels when using test tone sweeps. They contain far more acoustic energy than typical music programme, so can tax both the speakers and amplifier.
@braceyourselvesfortruth2492
@braceyourselvesfortruth2492 3 года назад
@@AxiomHomeTheaters thank you for the addition. Yes, you should start with your volume low and use your ears to gauge what a good level is with respect to how your music sounds when you are just below clipping thresholds at all stages.

Quick question. I understand that Axiom subs are DSP controlled. I was wondering in that case if it is possible to damage the woofer by playing it too loud and bass at the max or if the DSP will prevent the woofer from being over driven, no matter the settings and volume?
@AxiomHomeTheaters
@AxiomHomeTheaters 3 года назад
Under normal operating conditions with music or movie program signals, the DSP limiter will protect the drive unit from over-excursion at all times, regardless of the volume setting.

@@AxiomHomeTheaters Thank you. The reason I was asking was because I wanted to check what my new EP800 could do and looking for the deepest bass to demo a subwoofer, what comes often is the opening credits (first 20/25s) of the movie Edge of tomorrow. However a lot of warnings regarding not playing this at reference level as this was supposedly mixed too hot and there has been reports of some subs being damaged while playing it. So if I understand correctly, since Axiom subs are DSP controlled, they will never be damaged by something like this, even playing at reference level, correct? Thanks again.

@@bdpf1744 You will be fine…just don’t run it on a loop! As with any regular speaker, if you start to hear any strange mechanical noises or smell anything, turn down the volume. While the DSP will protect the woofer from over-excursion, heat stress can still play a part.

Different type of 'speaker' entirely, and unless there's been physical damage or water, this shouldn't happen. Suggest talking to the phone manufacturer.

My air tube in my subwoofer makes a rattling noise for some reason. Anyone know why? My speaker isn't blown it's perfectly fine, but the tube where the air escapes is rattling.
@AxiomHomeTheaters
@AxiomHomeTheaters 4 года назад
Check to see if the port tube is loose…you can usually tell without opening the cabinet by trying to rock it with your hand. If it is the adhesive holding it has likely failed over time. I would contact the original manufacturer for advice. Thanks for watching 👍

"It will sound distorted, harsh, thin, bright". And you can't give us some examples of how this sounds why? :/
@AxiomHomeTheaters
@AxiomHomeTheaters 4 года назад
One example would be if you're listening to a stark recording of female voice. If instead of very pure sound it's fuzzy, or you buzzing, when the singer hits certain notes, this would indicate a problem with your speakers. Hope that clarifies things for you, thanks for your question, and for watching.

If I can get some feed back on an issue that would be amazing. I have 2 - Qsc k12 speakers and they’ve always been amazing. Lately the speakers sound sooo harsh and loud like it’s not healthy sound. Everything is gained correctly, seriously there’s no reason these speakers should be sounding this loud and harsh. It sounds like the gain on my mixer is cranked so it sounds very hot and over gained and harsh and loud. But again everything is properly set etc. Nothing sounds buzzing or anything like that it’s just so harsh sounding. I’ve tried different mixers, different audio interfaces and the speakers are my last option. Do speakers start to produce harsh sound when they’re going bad? I’m going to go buy 2 of the k12.2’s to see if it’s the speakers but since I’ve never heard them sounding “blown” like crackling or buzzing etc I never thought they were bad. If someone can let me know if this is a sign of the speakers going bad that would be super helpful. Again the speakers sound very clear and fine but harsh and loud when I get them to an appropriate level. So now if I wanted to get a crowed going at say a bar, my volume will have to be wayy more lower for it not to kill my ears and then I can’t captivate the energy and vibe of the venue because of the harsh sound. I hope this all made sense and if anyone can help me out that would be awesome. I really hope someone says hey man your speakers are dying go buy new ones and then I will be so happy. I just want this problem fixed because I host two shows a week and I am losing my hearing and I’m livid.

If the sound has changed all of a sudden, it suggests to me that something might have happened to the internal electronics, or the tweeters. I would speak to QSC to see if they have any ideas.

So today I was playing music and they sound completely fine. They’re clear and have good bass still but during certain songs with the bass where I usually have it I’ll hear a popping sound. Does anyone know what that is? It sounds like a suction cup being pulled off a glass.
@AxiomHomeTheaters
@AxiomHomeTheaters 4 года назад
If it sounds mechanical it’s possible that you are “bottoming” the woofer. This means that you are driving the woofer beyond its limits and the voice coil is hitting the back plate of the motor system, creating a mechanical popping sound. If this just started occurring you might want to remove the woofer from one of your speakers and have a close look at the surround and the spyder/damper (attached to the back side of the cone neck) to check for damage. Thanks for watching, and good luck with your speakers.
