Great explanation. I had already pieced this info together myself but had I found this video ages ago it could have saved me a lot of reading. Lol. Clear concise, to the point and correct information. Well done.
Thank you so much! Very understandable post. I had an old Bose system that died on me after 20 years. I wanted a new Bose system, but I had a Rotel RAP2580mkii with a Rotel external AMP that powers a pair of Bowrers and Wilkins 802 D3s. I was using it to play music only. After my Bose died, instead of purchasing another Bose, I decided to add more speakers to the Rotel surround processor. I now have a B&W db4s subwoofer, b&w HTM71 700 series center channel, and 8 b&w M-1 surround speakers. I know it’s not conventional, but it was most economical for me at the time. My speakers are all set to small except the 802d3s. They’re set to large. My crossovers are as follows: 40Hz for the fronts, 60Hz for the center, 70 or 80Hz for the M-1s, and 120Hz for the sub. Still learning, but it sounds great. Next year I plan to get another DB4S Subwoofer. It’s just not in the budget for this year.
So I’ve watched quite a few videos now about speakers and setting crossovers. Yours made the most sense of them all. Thanks for helping me understand this topic much better. 👍
Great video! Excellent and clear explanation and illustration of the crossover process. In many cases the AVR manuals are very confusing in explaining the configuration to the "small or large" of the speakers vs the Subwoofer!
Thanks for giving me some great ideas. I just inherit a 1979 DJ home equipment two phase linear amps one crown amp, crossovers compressors and a large subwoofer, Bose Stand speakers Bose I’m trying to get the sound correct it has a Gemini mixer with eq and an Alexis equalizer two turntables really nice set up so I’ll be watching your RU-vid videos a lot to get your expertise on how to get the correct sound. I’m a senior so it’s gonna take me sometime. Appreciate your videos. Keep up the good work.
I miss my home cinema. I sold everything when we moved from a house to an appartment. Tweaking every little detail to make it sound perfect was so much fun. Now days I’m tweaking my 2 channel hi-fi system. That’s fun to. I have the crossover set pretty high at 120 hz. Something just makes the sound fly at that level in that room. Theoreticly it should be set lower but who cares. If it sounds good, go with it. For home cinema I have the Sony HT-A9 system and I must say it’s pretty amazing. Four speakers and a sub that sounds like 12 speakers. Fantastic system. No tweaks needed though. Everything is handled automaticly.
This is a fantastic explanation on crossover settings. I have the PB 3000. Your videos are so helpful. This is the best video I’ve seen on this subject. Thanks!
Yesssssss ...... 👉🏼🙏🏼👈🏽... KPACEGUY .. It s about time someone talk s clearly about the speaker crossover. 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽. It s time for me to reajust all my speakers crossover. Love ur channel. From a Quebec/Canadian guy 👍🏽👊🏽👍🏽
This video need to be bumped up👍👍 Maybe you have a video on it, if not: talk about volume:) When you have a good setting, you cant «hear» the subwoofer play. The sound is just there. Many, and also people who have been doing this for years, still have the subwoofer to loud. Good video.
Hi from Dallas TX. My mains are Definitive Technology BP-9040 powered towers (L/R), CS-9040 center channel, A900 height speakers, 2 SR-9040 surround speakers. I also have a Klipsch sub 12 subwoofer. The sub has two adjustment knobs;gain and Lowpass. My receiver is a Onkyo TX-RZ50. I have the towers set to full range. I have a large den with a cathedral ceiling.
It all makes sense now after watching your video.. Thank you so much for explaining this info so a child could understand.. That is a gift.. well done.. Off to retune my speaker crossovers :)
I just got a calibrated microphone last week so I've been tweaking everything recently but in order to get the flattest frequency response with how I had everything set up before required raising my crossover to 120hz and adjusting the distance a couple feet higher for the subs. I have dual HSU VTF2-MK5s and Jamo S803 front ported bookshelf speakers that have a 57hz-26khz +/- 3db. Have yet to dial in the distance setting or crossover yet but I'm getting very even output from the subwoofers now that I moved them to opposing corners. Biggest thing for me is that you can fix subwoofers interacting with room modes by moving them but you can't move your towers out of a null so if you have a null where you place your towers it determines where you can cross over. Hard to really know any of that without getting a mic tho unless you have super ears in the region in which our ears aren't sensitive haha.
I wish I could edit my previous comment, it wasn't just the intro, this is the best more clear explanation about crossover speakers I've ever seen (and I've seen a lot!) thank you!
Yes and spreads the bass load more evenly IMHO, my mains go down to 35Hz, lower than my sub!! Tried both and prefer LFE + main, but as he says use your ears!
Bro l have to say l just loved your no bs easy to understand with no heavy techie explanation of things! 🙂 Like you making your voice go lower in trying to explain things 🙂 It was even easy for an old technophobe noob like me to follow 🤣 Just a couple of questions please on your opinion with what frequency settings to use on my speaker set up…. Fronts, which I’ve had since you were born, are like massive bass heavy Cerwin Vega 1725’s, being over 52 inches high x 17 inches deep with each having a 15 inch and a 17 inch bass drivers, 2 mids and a tweeter, so what would u set the crossovers on those? I’ve looked for the instruction manuals and also on line but can find nothing to tell me their frequency response? The sub is a Yamaha soavo 900, frequency 18hz-160hz Rear sides 70mz-20mz Centre front 65mz-20mz Rear centre 80mz-20mz I’ve also subbed as well due to the opening scene of the video 🤣 AND thanks with any help u can give me with this 🙂🇬🇧
Your receiver probably doesn't let you set your crossover lower than 40hz and the cerwins are probably rated for a little under that. I'd personally go 50hz or 60hz and let my subwoofer do its job.
@@Kpaceguy Thanks bro appreciate your reply and I’ll let u know the outcome 👍🇬🇧 So would u set the sub @ 120 mz. Centre @ 60 mz. Rear sides @ 60 mz. Rear centre @ 80 mz
Kpacey" you are awsome 🤗👍🎼🎵🎶🎺🎷finally i got my Onkyo 696 set up, 😁✌Your video is the Best ivêd seen " step by step" on a screen now thats is how it should be explain , everyone should set their hometheater to what they love and hear it.men it just feels so great you break it Down in every detail 🤗😁✌thankz again , lookforward more videos " Godbless🙌🏻🙏🏻
Great job .!!! With this video I loved how you made something That May seem complicated . easier to understand .!! I have shared it with a few friends .!!
I recently got an Edifier D12 and added a Bestisan-SW65D. For an inexpensive system it's great and fills my home. The Edifier needs the sub badly tho. Subwoofer is rated at 40Hz-250z. After much OCD tweaking I finally just set the crossover at the midway notch and said screw it. I guess that would be a 145Hz setting? It's really hard to tell the difference in subtle tweaking it. I can only tell when dial is at opposite ends. With D12 really just good with mids I'd think it's good if the sub crossover isn't too low, like about clear down as some suggest to have it.
Thanks bro..im soon setting up my first home cinema and have no idea in frequency shifts or the crossover thing.....now i have some sort of idea on how to achieve this..
One of the best video.....cleared most of my doubts about crossovers.....I am using polk audio psw111 subwoofer connected to denon AVR via LFE ....when I am putting subwoofer back panel low pass filter knob to full.....woofer is not giving me gud quality base and when I set the knob to 100hz ....base is gud and clean. I guess avr should control subwoofer crossover ,instead of doing it from subwoofer physical knob. Any idea what i am doing wrong. Front ,center and surround crossoverd at 80hz All speakers set to small Lfe +main----120hz Speakers details- Front- polk audio t50 Center-polk audio C30 Surround -t15
Thanks for the compliment. It doesn't sound like a crossover issue. It sounds like a subwoofer placement issue, phase issue or room acoustics issue. Maybe even all 3.
Audio Pro Drumfire - Crossover set on 2nd marker (no Hz markers on the dial, only 11 white lines) - documentation just says Frequency Crossover 2500 Hz, 50-120 Hz so without knowing much about audio gear its hard to know where is best. Sounds great though
Unfortunately I do not yet own a subwoofer, so for the time being I accept missing anything below ca. 30 Hz. (That is the roll off of my large front speakers). So by default my fronts are set to large whereas auto calibration leaves my center channel at 40 Hz which is way too low anyway. Specs for my center channel read 72 Hz but no mentioning of dB. So I had to trust my ears to set my center channel correctly. I somehow noticed that for Blu Ray quality 80 Hz is fine, but for my TV settop box (which streams Dolby Digital) I mostly have to raise it to 90 Hz because of bad mixing which makes human voices mumble. But that's mostly because of bad mixing resulting center channel way too high in volume.
