Old School Fragrances like Dior Eau Sauvage, Creed Bois Du Portugal, Guerlain Vetiver and Aqua Di Parma Colonia sometimes get accused of smelling dated. In this video George from the Fragrance Apprentice joins me to discuss whether these old school fragrances are 'still good'!

You just can't beat Eau Sauvage, Antaeus, Egoist, Guerlain Vetiver, LIDG, Boss no.1, Kouros, Jazz, Chanel Pour Monsieur with modern sugary waters...

Most of them are watered down and flattened now. I would add to this list Boucheron Pour Homme, Van Gils Strictly For Men, Amouage Gold Man, Ted Lapidus Pour Homme, Zino, Aramis 900.

Modern sugary waters 🤣 love that! True though. Most of the men’s fragrance releases these days put you in risk of diabetes.... Eau Sauvage for me is the one.

That's the right words sugary waters, i grow with Drakkar Noir, Egoïste and Platinum Egoïste, Pleasures, Eternity, Dune, Farenheit, Kouros, Contradiction, Coolwater, Happy, Voyage, Chrome and One, they still give the fight.

Guerlain Vetiver has grown on me for the past year tremendously, nowadays when I wear it I cant stop sniffing my arms all the time 😁, its hypnotizing. In my opinion, this is the greatest vetiver ever in designers game. Grey Vetiver is great also, but it lacks the depth and the manliness of Guerlain's. Looking forward to try some niche vetiver fragrances.

Hi Chris. Many thanks for your brilliant videos I have taken so much from. It seems my comment is three years late, but anyway.. when you discuss Dior Eau Sauvage, this black-belt-silver-buckle bottle is actually 2017 version, the nose behind it being Francois Demachy. The original (1966) Eau Sauvage edt, created by Edmond Roudnitska, is in silver-belt bottle. There was also 2012 version (black-belt-black-buckle bottle) with a distinctive heavy mihrr note, mostly unavailable today. I thought this might be of some use. Thanks again.

Thank you Chris for another outstanding video. You never fail to approach this epic subject with intelligence, integrity and humor! I would love for you to revisit "old-school" fragrances in more videos. Many of them (as you conclude in this video) are just as relevant and exciting today, and it's refreshing to venture back and explore those forgotten dnas again...I think of Rive Gauche for men; Habit Rouge; Opium for men; M7; Encre Noire; Déclaration; Eau de Gentiane Blanche etc... Also, your guests are always to notch!

To me, fragrances are similar to music. If it was composed and created with emotion and passion, then it will stand the test of time. If a song had that hook (frag note) that just fit so well in the composition that it kept you coming back for a listen (wear), then it is a success. Many "mainstream" releases in both music and fragrance come off as mass appealing and boring, and are quickly forgettable. To me, music is a portal to my past, as are fragrances. Thanks for the great work on this video.

Great video boys 👏 Chris JPG Le Male, is legendary and I still love it now, in fact I bought a bottle in the sales 🕺 as I’ve said before I’m no expert and I haven’t got a ‘nose’ for picking out notes etc but surely if something smells good it smells good, I don’t quite get how a scent can be ‘modern’ by that do people mean ‘different’ all fragrance is different and to be fair as ok typing this at the end of the video you clarify your feelings on this but I’m not re-typing 😝 quality will stand the test of time like fine wine 🙏

And what you said about classic frags is 100% true and I also enjoy them and also their flankers like Dior Eau Savage Extrem. But is sad for me that many our fathers or uncles or fathers of our friends wore Davidoff Cool water and because of this many people have those oldschool memories associated with Creed Green irish tweed which I love. I am surprised that you did not chose any of this two for this video as this smell will be all time great classic oldschool fragrance and almost everyone or maybe even everyone know this smell. Especialy when there is also Aspen Coty with same DNA which you can buy for price of two biers and it was probably on sale in many huge malls and supermarkets around the wolrd during 90's with Cool water for price of cheesburger. And you can still buy all three of them everywhere in the world like in small village as Czech republic. Peace from here here is one cloud of Creed GIT for all of you 😶‍🌫️

@@FRAGMENTAL btw u should try cypresso di toscana from ADP blue line, recently picked up and it's lovey dry spicy cypress. Also for me Eau sauvage perfum is no longer good un till 2014/16 batches with all black box n plaque on bottle. It was smokey and i loved it but now it's disappointing.

“ are old school frags still good?” , has literally 4 of my favorites in the thumbnail. I’m only 25 I think bois du Portugal and Vetiver by Guerlain are quite outstanding, Acqua di Parma holds a strong corner in my collection as well.

You should do video where you use 10 (example most sensual/masculine) fragrances, put them on you and let them set. (And ofc 1 per day or apply another when previous is gone) And then just walk by strangers / people in your videos and ask what people think if someone smelling like that walks by.

Great topic and discussion guys, George seemed a bit bored though, not sure why. I am going back to old school frags since most new designer releases have been so generic and boring. Out of them all Dior ES Parfum is something I am going to look into.

Love Vetiver...and if you want a more affordable AdP Colonia (in US anyway) check out Burt's Bees Cologne. Same DNA and natural. It lasts longer and is more rustic and less "posh" but ultimately better IMO. Smell swell & be well, JR xox PS My vintage 1967 Eau Sauvage aftershave splash (bottle #23160) has more ooomph and balls than the modern EDT...I need to try the Parfum. My grandpa scent association is British Sterling!! I still have his last mini travel splash...so smooth.

Colonia is good but I also prefer Colonia intensa. Just picked up the a old classic to me that I used in the beginning of the nineties “Hugo Boss Number One” and maybe it’s because I have all these good memories with this one that I still like it

Definitely all about associations. Even though George defined "good" in his videos, I still find it to be an incredibly subjective term. After all, I'm sure there are people out there that never considered 1 million or Bois du Portugal to be good in the first place! Nevertheless, it's great to hear your thoughts on each fragrance. Not hopeful that Eau Sauvage won't be discontinued though, the way Dior's been tracking. Might have to turn to niche and indie to keep the good times rollin'.

Sinatra also liked Yardleys English Lavender (perhaps a specialist man's version compared to what's out today). Churchill wore Floris Special 127 and Penhaligons Blenheim Bouquet. Ian Fleming (and possibly David Bowie) favoured Floris 89.

My favorite fragrance of all time is Eau Savauge. I'm a huge fan of Diorella, and some one on a forum wrote that Diorella was the feminine version of Eau Savauge. Eau Savauge is so much better. I'm glad they still make it. To me it's smells modern.
@JT-rx1eo
@JT-rx1eo 2 года назад
You think Eau Sauvage EDT is better than Diorella? I think it was the critic Luca Turin who said the Diorella was Eau Sauvage perfected. I think I also read that the perfumer of both, Edmond Roudnitska, thought so too.

ADP Colonia Essenza is great but I really like Assoluta and it lasts a lot longer for me. Colonia Club is great on a hot summers day. Has that great cooling effect. Only issue with Club is longevity is weakest of the ADP's I own. Guerlain Vetiver (and extreme) are great. Will always have GV / TF Grey Vetiver and TdH in my collection. The holy trinity of vetiver fragrances ;) Eau Sauvage EDP is great (2017)

I was never a fan of 1 Million, I had it back when I only really had one or two fragrances on the go at any one time. I then had a boss who wore it but ignoring how popular it was it was never something I enjoyed so I do appluad it for that, it wasn't a simple crowd pleaser at release. On the same idea though, I do always keep a bottle of Tommy around and enjoy wearing it, but that may be clouded by the association, I associate it with great times when I was much younger. The late 90s, puffer jackets, Nokia 3210 etc. So it's always a pleasing smell for me.
