A lot of modern guns are like modern cars, supposidily better made, but yet strangely soul-less, which is why i only shoot old stuff.

Spot on, unfortunately over unders are quite expensive to make, so you can really see and feel the difference between 70/80s era to todays offerings, as sporting took off demand grew they all cut corners and did what they could to save build time/costs. New guns besides top end hand built units are cold and no passion, i will take a 70/80s gun anyday of week over new, compare a bc miroku to a new miroku it is night and day

I disagree with the comparison, in terms of clay shooting, which demands a high level of shells, therefore stress on the action. Old cars are lovely to look at and drive....for shortish distances, on a sunny Sunday. But, for day to day, hard use, a modern car is what we all use, with far more confidence. Why is the comparison not quite right? Well, because a 30 year old Beretta, as an item, is way more durable than any car built at that time. Just my opinion.

I managed to get a Beretta 686 Sporter from 1985. Only two owners from new, absolutely love it. Solid with some great history behind it and some Soul. Hoping to take ownership of a Browning Medalist from early 2000. Give me old or older. Makes you appreciate what its experienced when your holding it, and the new memories you'll hopefully make.

I have a 686 sporter from the first year they were made. It has the brown butt pad, and the plastic square bead which reminds me of Roger Moore it is so retro! It cost me 600 quid and shoots and handles beautifully. My friends 3 year old 686 cost three times that and just doesn’t have the same soul. I would also be surprised if it still works when it’s 35 years like mine. They are both beautiful guns and are probably exactly as accurate as each other. Some people like new stuff. I like old landrovers, faded wax jackets and patina. So it’s horses for courses. Buy what you love, not what you’re told!!

The birds and clays do not know what date is stamped on a gun. My stable of old Berettas has served me just fine since the early 1990's. Love my 95 682 Super Sporting, 96 682 Gold, and my 97 687EELL Sporting to list a few of my Berettas. I have shot to newer guns and yes they are nice but they do lack soul!

A freind of mine bought a brand new 687 sporter about 2007 he shot approx 3,000 shells thru it probably less,I think at the time it cost £1800 had all sorts of problems with it ejecting it was also loose like it was shot out. He took it back to the dealer in Buckinghamshire and he made every excuse under the sun but in the end he had to yield and berreta had it back. Other mates have had beretta since the 80s thousands of shells thru them and theve been faultless. Cant get on with berettas although I liked them just never suited me. Loved my old Winchester 101 but bought into the 32" brigade and shoot a mk38 for many years now and an mk 60 hp for game, brilliant guns great value four yr buck. Like yr reviews honest and informative 👍

I shoot a 1985 682L Sporter, finished in Beretta's custom shop, DT10/11L of its day, weighs nearly 9lb and I use it for clay, game and mostly pigeon shooting, I use it with 32 gram Rottweil Tigers or 34 gram Gamebore pigeon extremes and I feel less recoil than with my old Benelli M2, It has a piece of timber to die for and it just screamed buy me on the rack at Coley's on the way south for a NGO advanced loading course. I would not part with this gun ever, it is perfection for me, it just feels right, it seems to do the work for me. My advice for what its worth, buy quality buy older.

Of course old guns were made better. And the older you go, the better they are. Well kinda. Post WWI where steel had finally been perfected. Although to be fair, the top guys could make good steel prior but those guys knew they were superior and priced accordingly. After WWI, anyone could get quality steel and it was affordable. If all you care about is that it goes bang, get something new. If gun making heritage means anything to you and tradition is part of the enjoyment you get from using them, for the most part, you should be shopping the used rack. Find one in good shape and it’ll go bang every time as well. And they start appreciating in value immediately! 👍🏼

The reason Beretta no longer hand engraves is because consumers wanting to spend that much money for appearance they won't be looking at Beretta. If you're looking for a well built, great shooting gun Beretta is your place to go.

I'd buy the new one over the old one in a heartbeat: who cares if the asterisks are done by machines?!? The most important aspect of a gun is the trigger and barrel technology which have improved considerably. These improvements will help the shooters' performance .... The rest is, in my humble opinion, nonsense. 🤔😄

@dadanddaughtersadventures3557

I’d be inclined to disagree with this. Newer 92 series like the 92a1, M9a1, and M9a3 are superb quality with a tighter fit and finish than the older milspec 92s that could be described as loose/sloppy in my opinion. Oh and the plastic guide rod is an upgrade over the old metal ones they replaced.
@john-paulsilke893
@john-paulsilke893 4 года назад
One word should end this argument. Non-adjustable and pitiful sights. Okay five words but you get the point. The old ones are certainly worth every penny they sell for however and are way greater value, but simply not ultimately worth as much as newer guns. Also remember when it comes to old guns all the lemons have typically been sorted or tossed in a garage to rust away already whereas the newer guns haven’t all had a chance to be done with their lemons.
@dadanddaughtersadventures3557
@dadanddaughtersadventures3557 4 года назад
John-Paul Silke I’d have to disagree again. 92a1 has dove tailed front and rear sights to be able to switch to an after market sight set. I put a Dawson precision front sight on mine and just blacked out the rear. Wilson makes awesome rear sights in various heights to change the point of impact.

Take the older 471 Silver hawk side by side and compare it to a $5,600 dollar 486 Parallelo, and it's common sense. The older Beretta's engravings, wood, and overall aesthetics are much better. I'm sure the functionality is there as well given they both shoot 3", and are made in an era where a good bit of Italian manufactures use Fausti and others to make the same guns.

I recently paid a grand for a 687 silver pigeon from 1999. One owner and still tight. It doesn't look dated but still has nice hand finishing. With machined guns, they are all the same. With handmade guns, you can have a Monday morning one or a Friday afternoon one. Much the same as my Land Rover. Some people have loads of trouble with them, mines never put a foot wrong.

The only reason I traded my old Beretta in for a new SP Sporter was I needed a steel shot compliant gun. The gun shop owner told me several times I was going backwards in quality. To be honest I do use the new gun a lot more though and do love it.

In retrospect I should have bought him the 85 I have now as he doesn't look after anything, I couldn't bear to even look at my 75 now but if he cant kill it no one can. @Morroes100
@Morroes100 5 лет назад
I can answer this at least for the US market... Browning will sell to any dealer at just about any volume. Plus you can get them at a Distributor if you can't order less than a handful of guns per year. Beretta recently (5-10 years ago?) changed to favor big box stores & high volume dealers. They axed their local reps and focused on much larger territories so you probably don't even know your reps name. Their lowest tier became around 10 times what Browning is, and if you truly want to make money and get extra discounts you need to multiply that by another 2 to 4 times. You can't buy anything but the lower end Beretta's from a distributor. If you want anything that isn't a 686 grade 1, you can't get it from a distributor. This caused a massive favoritism toward Browning & Benelli in the US market. That's not to say there are different reasons elsewhere in the world. However, any of the spoken of companies make fantastic firearms though.

@@Morroes100 Morroes, thanks for the reply and insider explanation - really very interesting, makes sense and this can be related to other manufacturers like Apple, Samsung and DJI etc. in different industries I guess, where they start up with local dealers working really hard to promote the products in their own small individual capacities, only to be dropped when the 'big players' show an interest and take over the majority of that countries distribution completely? 😒👍✔ - cruel and disrespectful to the initial independant pioneer distributors, but all to common these days I'm afraid!

I have a 686 onyx 28" multi choke which is now 35 years old. this gun has been a game gun, a clay gun, a rough shoot gun. So its done some work. I take off the stock and give the action a clean out about every 5 years this gun has never let me down in all that time. It still shoots [with my help] at around 85% on sporting clays. I also owned a new berretta Parenia which went back to berretta twice because it was giving inconsistent light trigger pulls on the bottom barrel. After I got it back the second time it started doing it again at this point I had had enough and got rid and took a hard financial loss I loved that gun but it had to perform. The anticipation when shooting it of whens it going to do it again started to effect my shooting. So I guess that's why I am biased towards older berrettas. I will never sell my 686 onyx

Coming from someone who doesn't know much about Beretta's, you said that you can still get hand engraving on new guns, do you have any more details on that ? How much is it, what kind of options are there ? I'd love to be able to buy a gun with a blank receiver and have someone engrave an image of my choosing. I'd imagine that would cost far more than most guns are even worth ?
@tgsoutdoors
@tgsoutdoors 5 лет назад
You have two options if you want a truly hand engraved beretta First is to buy an SO series gun, they start used at £3000. Second - buy a plain action 680 series (686 onyx or 682) and send it away for annealing, engraving and hardening. Probably be in for £4-10k by the time you are finished. However, the EELL is hand finished engraving, so is a good compromise.
