school "drop off, pick up" is similar to "daily concert event" , the number one contributor for local peak hour traffic jam and can be easily fixed by build "school centered" local bike trails linking school to home.
@Celeste-in-Oz

That’s a brilliant insight. “School traffic” is worse than work traffic these days… not to mention the horrendous waste of energy in drop off & pick up lines as cars idle with aircon running! As inner urban schools grow, the congestion around schools is getting insane!

yes, school pick up and drop off is terrible; if not cycling to school, then even coming to school half an hour early is a lazy workaround to reduce that traffic jam. though, honestly, cycling to school is achievable in 90% of cases, especially primary school. the other 10% of cases - the majority can use public transport or move; I never understood the parents who send, or drive, their child to a school that is far from home
@SystemParanoia

Hub and spoke bike networks. Every school should be a hub of the local bike network, and spokes should run throughout it's entire catchment. Then you just need to connect all of these hub and spokes together. Once the kids are safe.. sort out the commuters

Australian drivers, in my experience, are incredibly negligent or abusive. The attitude towards non-car transit here is awful.

Thats because drivers aren't as accustomed to it, and frankly, the infrastructure encourages that hostility, the literal conflict. I'm a cyclist and a driver, and I get frustrated by cyclists when im driving. Cyclists should not be riding on 60,70, 80 kph roads. They shouldn't have to.

EVERY road user should be pushing for more dedicated bike lanes. It’s in everyone’s interest that as many people as possible can ride their bikes to work. Unfortunately arguments from the cycling side about speed limits (while somewhat true) will never win over the part of commuters that have to travel by car. Here in inner Sydney we've got lots of people who want to cycle more and a council who are on-board, but we're missing out due to conflict over removal of parking spaces. Tokyo figured this out: you can't register your car unless you own/rent a place to park it off-street. This makes a big contribution to Tokyo's cycling culture. In Amsterdam they have been moving on-street parking underground. Not an ideal solution but it gets the ball rolling in increasing cyclist numbers which eventually decreases car numbers.

@@anubizz3 I like this route and take it often but I think it could be more popular and inclusive of all riders if they fixed some of these issues: - Not enough protection down Bourke Rd Alexandria due to gaps in the concrete divider for driveways. I think it would be better as a 1 way cycleway on either side of the road so cyclists don't have to ride unprotected adjacent to oncoming traffic. - "Shared paths" that are really just standard width footpaths with blue paint. They aren't really designed for both pedestrians and cyclists, but at least it's a better option than mixing with cars and trucks on the dangerous high speed limit roads. - Cyclist dismount signs: along the route into the CBD we're told to dismount and walk several times. Most of these areas have plenty of space to share, more space than some of the shared paths where we are not required to dismount. - Removal of the Dunning Ave cycleway. The should remove a lane of parking and build the cycleway properly instead of removing the cycleway. - Intersections with dedicated bicycle lights, except the cars get to do 2 full cycles of traffic before bikes can go. - The cycleway is the least respected lane of the road so it's always the first place to get blocked when there is any construction happening. I like that City of Sydney are making an effort to get more people cycling but there is always opposition, and compromises have to be made which make cycling less practical.

I like that more people in Australia want to ride a bicycle, but i'm noticing one thing whats quite different from cycling in Holland. Everyone is wearing cycling gear and is using an expensive bike. For a quick commute you wont need cycling gear and any old bike will do, negating the risk of it being stolen. And you dont need an e-bike to ride just 3 to 5 kilometer. And some advice from a Dutchie to city councils. Dont think roads, think routes. Routes get people from A to B. While just adapting one road for cyclists is good, it's much better to think of a network of connected bicycle friendly roads, even if that means that the average standard is lower.

Nice video, missed this episode. Still frustrates me that I finished a double degree at uni before a 20 metre link on the bikeway I wanted to use was finished , the alternative at the time around that spot was not a safe route but now it is amazing. Hopefully it won't take another 50 years for us to have more safe routes - I think traffic congestion will have to make it a priority eventually for transport planning, especially if more kids could get to school safely without the need for car drop-offs. 800 people converging on a spot in cars always clogs the roads up around my area. Also, if you look what is happening in places like Montreal, Vancouver and other places in America now (or Manilla in the Philippines where they built 500 km of bike lines in under 12 months during COVID). Not just Europe is investing in micromobility solutions to reduce congestion and make cities better for people to live in, so there is hope. I think before we would too easily dismiss it as just a European city thing so it's great to see other examples now.

A lot of it comes down to driver attitudes. Drivers can be so unnecessarily aggressive towards cyclists, IMO it comes from the convict roots of this country. If more drivers got on a bike they'd realise that cycling is great and be less rude towards cyclists IMO.
@MissFoxification

We need cameras on intersections where there's bike paths. Every driver that cuts off someone using the cycle path needs to be fined and the fines need to be heavy. People just aren't learning, you can't turn in front of a vehicle or cyclist, it's against the law. But nobody gets fined for it even though it's dangerous driving.

@@dickiesdocos Do you even realise what you just did? I me stating I want to stop drivers of cars hitting and killing cyclists your brain instantly went on the defense of the driver. You are coming to the defense of people hitting and KILLING people and to do that, spitting a stupid question that you think will reframe this to me doing the wrong thing or somehow being in defense of the other side. No. Fine cyclists that do it too. The red lights are there for good reason. Running the lights on anything is against the law. Not the response you expected huh. Your prejudice is showing. It's not a dichotomy of teams you hate or defend. Stop defending drivers that do the wrong thing. It doesn't matter if you cycle or not, being are being killed on the roads and that should be of greater concern to you than "your team".

Just do as the Europeans do. Make the footpaths wider and allow bikes to share the footpath. Include more bikelanes and close off city centers for cars. Give people the freedom to choose if they wish to wear a helmet (I do wear one). Build good bike parking/storage in central locations. Build tram and trains with a designated spot for bikes.

Wrong. People pay rego upon their cars and rego doesn't pay for roads. People also pay income tax, stamp duty, gst and rates and that's what pays for roads. Those taxes also fund footpaths, clean parks with benches to sit on, public transport, schools, hospitals, the military and politician's gravy.

The mandatory helmet laws did incredible damage to cycling in Australia, painting it as a dangerous activity. The irony was that after the law was introduced, cycling accidents rates tripled, and cycling uptake massively dropped. We now have 22 times more cycling accidents than best practice.

Small motorcycles and scooters are a good alternative to cars in terms of climate impact but some people ride very loud high power motorcycles through residential areas. I think we should make a new legal class of vehicle for high power e-scooters and e-bikes with throttles. Keep the least dangerous forms of transport (walking and cycling) the least regulated. People are starting to discover new forms of mobility but the laws need to catch up.

I would hope that no one would disagree there needs to be infrastructure and separation. But the arguments used by the bike lobby are pathetic and naive and often have the opposite effect than intended. The age old Netherlands argument. Have a look at a topographic map overlaid with the population. Hills, low population density, long distances, less tax per square kilometre. The weather. If it's cold and rainy, only the most enthusiastic will get out there. What are people supposed to do on these days? The sweaty smelly stuff that happens when you arrive at work. Penalising carbon polluters for bicycle priority does one thing - make them angry, creating danger and backlash. The "I like doing it so you will have to ride as well" argument. The complete lack of understanding of other people's lives. Try having little kids, 40km commute between home and work, the stress of managing kid's activities, and tell me that's achievable on a bike.

The main thing there needs to be is a refutation of people who think they have a right to public space because they own an over-engineered, polluting personal transport device. People cycle in cities. Cities are dense. That goes for the Netherlands and Australia. Long distance? It's a city. No-one is suggesting you commute in the outback. Most car journeys are a couple of kms. The weather is always used as an excuse. But Finnish kids ride to school on compacted ice. When it rains, wear a raincoat. It's true that Australian cities have been badly designed around cars. That doesn't mean they need to continue to be.

Australia is too car centric and the investment into riding infrastructure is pathetic. The result is a fat, lazy society with failing health outcomes. Less and less are interested in biking. Also, bicycles cost way too much as the industry went hard to cash in on the MAMIL with his spare cash to spend on gear. The average punter can't afford a few grand for a bike.
@petergibson7287
@petergibson7287 22 дня назад
Your claim of fewer people being interested in cycling is plain wrong; lots of people are interested in cycling and there's more every year. Not everyone is fat and lazy, only about half of everyone. Also, your claim about bicycles being too expensive is also false; there's ;lots of cheap bikes out there. If the average punter can't afford a bike then that person is wasting their money on crap they don't need. As for mamils; haven't you ever wondered why they have so much spare cash?
