I used the old Hellborg DR strings. They were… as described? Lots of fundamental, subtle overtones. The thicc [what i called “single-ply”] outer wrap tore me up but it wasn’t terrible. These seem like they’re lower tension than those were, so I’m piqued. This is like a mix of those DRs and some of my favorite TI strings. SOLD!

This sounds similar to the problems Kalium Strings sought to resolve. And they did so amazingly. Especially noticeable if you get particularly large strings, as the size increase exponentially increases the dullness and stiffness problems. Stiffness also causes strings to be knocked out of tune easier, so a more flexible string will be more stable as it gets back in place faster.

you described how the strings are constructed very well. the price is silly, but these are designed for perfect harmonics and that makes them perfect in a studio scenario, and just like studio speakers and audio processing equipment, the price reflects that extreme precision in the engineering of the product necessary for that controlled environment.
@aleksandarpopovic369
@aleksandarpopovic369 2 года назад
Pitch of strings isn't exactly the same as pitch of harmonics because of ftret placement. Fret placement is kind of compromise between pitch and simplicity of fret placement and shape.
@casanovafunkenstein5090
@casanovafunkenstein5090 2 года назад
That's true when playing double stops and chords but the assertion is that the harmonic series on each individual note is closer to the theoretical 'correct' value, so the tone of those single notes is going to be different with these strings and those double stops and chords could come through more clearly because each note rings clearer. I placed the inverted commas there because a synthesiser is probably the only instrument capable of generating that sort of sound and they are designed to allow you to modulate that waveform into something more musical and the relationship between harmonics and the fundamental of the note is a significant part of what gives each instrument its character.
@nuberiffic
@nuberiffic 2 года назад
No, this nothing to do with frets. It's about the harmonics series / overtones present within any given pitch
@unduloid
@unduloid 2 года назад
What are these "frets" you keep talking about?
@aleksandarpopovic369
@aleksandarpopovic369 2 года назад
@@unduloid it is mentioned in the video that those strings overcomes the problem of difference between pitch of harmonics and fretted notes that exist on guitars. As I know, the only way to overcome this issue is to make microtonal or fretless guitar.
@MrAlternatingcurrent
@MrAlternatingcurrent 2 года назад
@@aleksandarpopovic369 Yeah, that's probably bullshit. I don't think you can compensate for that (except for using different tuning system like just intonation or 31EDO). The only thing that comes to mind is trying to change the diameter (or the shape) of the string in certain places, which would fuck up the tuning of everything else, and add more inharmonics. Also it would be ridiculously hard to make and very impractical. What I think they're actually doing is using some kind of thinner or more flexible core, so the string can vibrate almost like an ideal string would, while having the same or similar density like normal bass string. That means frequencies of the harmonics should be closer to integer multiples of the fundamental frequency and not to 12EDO notes.

I’ve got them installed on one of my basses. Different sound. But an interesting one. I really like them. They work especially well with effects. But I’m disappointed DR no longer makes them and they’ve since gone over to an orchestral string maker Dogal. The new string maker has basically tripled their former price. Which is why I’ll probably stop using them once I exhaust my stockpile of DR Hellborg s.
@SuperCele
@SuperCele 2 года назад
I think that the DR and Dogal have a different concept, the Doga’s core is a multi wire one (as cello or violin) and not a round or an exagonal one. About price if their life is 3 times longer than the DR one the price could be the same.

They sound a little noisy and sloppy and I imagine it’s due to the extra wind gap and the super light tension. They’re very vocal, though. How much part the pickups and mix have to do with it is the question. I’d like to see the same lick on the same bass with two different strings.

I wonder if these would help with the inherent intonation problems on the B string of short-scale 5-strings like the Ibanez EHB1505SMS, or the E string on a Hofner violin bass?
@bubblepipemedia3414

Would these work well on a fretless? I’m worried that perhaps the main point of these (aside from intonation) is to have a better bending ability, so I feel like some of it’s usefulness may be lost on a fretless. Also I wish they made a 4 string set that started at B, I know it’s not standard, but I hate wasting a string with sets this expensive.

That price isn't too high to at least try out. My question is how difficult will it be to re-acclimate to regular strings if and when I decide to switch back. Does playing on these cause you to lose enough hand strength that you have to rebuild that strength in order to effectively play regular strings again? For someone already fighting off chronic elbow tendonopathy, that kind of loss and attempt to rebuild would be begging for an exacerbation of the condition, if not for the development of new physical trauma.

In my opinion it doesn't really matter if the bass is slightly out of tune. At least It's far less prominent compared to an out of tune guitar. The human ear is a lot more tolerant with low tones.
@SxSxG666
@SxSxG666 2 года назад
@Funky Monk I thought the word "slightly" would suggest that I was not talking about a completely out of tune bass. The video was talking about how strings running over a nut or bridge would change in tone because of the bend. This might be true in theory but in reality almost no one cares. It hardly matters how hard you hold a bass string down. The tone is always almost the same, especially compared to a guitar. With a much thinner guitar string every over fretting (is that even a word) detunes the tone. Usually it's also easier to spot out of tune tones when they ring together in a chord compared to single note lines. Nevertheless I think we can both agree on that it is generally advisable to tune your instrument before playing.

perfect pitch? come on, stop with the clickbait titles they might be better than the most but they are NOT perfect pitch... if your bass holds tuning with these strings as opposed to some other, that's just the difference between good and bad strings and I know what I'm talking about, I had my bass hold a tuning with a wide range of temperatures and sudden changes, and I've had it detune with "fender" strings while sitting in the same room for a few days... Maybe you wanna try to watch the video before you start to scream „clickbait“ and „hoax“. It’s not even about holding strings in tune 🤦‍♂️

Strange body language, try to look straight at the camera when speaking otherwise it indicates dishonesty.
