Are RM Williams Comfort Craftsman Boots Worth it - 1 Year Review Update

It’s been almost a year since I purchased my pair of Chestnut Kangaroo RM Williams, and just short of a year since I did my initial impressions of the boots, here on RU-vid. As such I think it’s about time, I update everyone on my thoughts and reflections on the RM Williams comfort craftsman and share my experience with everyone. These boots have been worn a lot, days standing on my feet, walking around, and trudging through puddles and mud in our extended rainy period here in Australia.

You need to buy a wide fit mate!

@jessupsays Год назад
You think so? Like an E/F? I think they fit pretty well honestly. But yes I know I have a fairly wide foot, it might be worth investigating. Would be 100% if they didn't feel comfortable at all. Did you go wider?

@@jessupsays yes i had a pair in 10G where i had the same issues u had. On certain days when my feet would swell up my pinky would get squished. Later when i moved to 10H it was world of a difference.

Great assessment; agreed completely. I bought my first pair of the Blaxland model (same as Comfort Craftsman except for toe profile) twelve years ago and, although they’re not always as comfortable as my full-leather shoes and boots, the durability and the grip in the wet make them a lot more practical most of the time. They’re starting to show their age and hard use, so I’ve just picked up another pair and expect to get at least another decade out of them. Very happy with the value for money considering how insanely long-lasting and versatile they are.

I'm glad you're even longer term experience with the boots is positive! I can't wait til mine are 10+ years old! They may not be as 'Fancy' anymore but I'm sure they're like a comfortable old friend. I think Ill get mine changed over to leather soles one day, just more comfortable in the really long run, though not as practical! Its a tough one truly. Wear your new pair in good health! They still make great boots, a pair to be proud of wearing in my humble opinion.

One thing that's important that RM left out is the CC use leatherboard under the poron material. Leatherboard is notorious for its incredible low ultimate strength (a term borrow from machincal engineering). Meaning it would not take much stress to snap it in half. Once it break, it's pretty much game over and it would be 250$ for a relasting service.
@jessupsays

You're right, its a low quality material choice. Which sort of mirrors the rest of the decisions in the materials right?

Sold my RM Williams and replaced with Ian Harold boots, better built, more comfortable and definitely wear better. And considerably cheaper.
@jessupsays
@jessupsays 4 месяца назад
Not the only comment to the same effect. Are you UK-based? It seems Ian has good cut through there, how are you seeing them? Here in AUS, people are patriotic toward RM, but it's also an 'easy' purchase. A well-known brand that people know and 'is quality'. Maybe like Trickers used to be in the UK? I would think IHarold would have a lot of trouble cutting through that.

@@jessupsaysyes , I'm in Northamptonshire borders 20 miles away from Crockett and Jones and Trickers. An Aussie mate told me about Ian Harold he said Australia best kept secret, I had two pairs of RM Williams one tan, the other brown, they were okay but I certainly wouldn't rave about them like some do, and have a cult following in UK mine made stupid money on eBay. As far as I'm aware there's only a few stockists of Ian Harold in UK loads stock RM Williams, I was lucky picked up the Ian Harold on eBay new, unwanted gift, had them two years now and worn them loads, with minimal wear. incidentally I own several pairs of Trickers, 3 Henry, Burford and Stow and a couple of pairs of C and J my personal favourite the Coniston rough out suede boots.

@@richyclubsport5155 Thanks for sharing. I'd been very curious how it was spreading! As I said, It's not done similarly here. Best kept secret indeed! Hey! Love your informative videos very helpful. Thankyou! I never wore boots, but I am looking to buy a pair of boots. For loafers, I wear 6.5 or 6 depending on the brand, with very thin dress socks. I go smaller size to prevent heel slippage. For sneakers, I wear 7 since I have thick socks. For boots, what size do you think I should wear and with what socks? I'm thinking to wear dress socks with them and thinking maybe 7 will fit me. I probably don't need to worry about heel slippage since it is a boot and not a loafer. Any opinions and suggestions? I will see if I can try some in store. I have flat feet so thinking about the dynamic flex.
@jessupsays
@jessupsays Год назад
Thank you! Very kind of you to say. Sounds like we have similar sized feet. Though the shape, who knows! I think I'd go a 6.5 or a 7. Depending on the last. But that would be a place to start and then go up or down or change widths if you need to. I think RM or anyone quality local would be the best place to start. Find a pair that fits and is comfortable that you like as a boot fit. Then go from there! If you can get to an RM store they'd have all the types too.
@flarierza33
@flarierza33 Год назад
@@jessupsays Checked in store today. The 6.5 has the boot slightly hugging my feet, the 7 is slightly loose around the toes. Hard to know without working in them for a day or 2. Will probably have to risk it to find out. Leaning towards the 6.5 and hoping it loosens up abit around the toes after some use. Also noticed some of the boots, the stitching is poking my leg around the ankle/cuff area. Probably I can ask them to do something about it, but I didn't mention it to the sales person.
@jessupsays
@jessupsays Год назад
Leather does stretch, but not a lot a lot. I personally like a tighter fit so would do the same with a 6.5. hopefully they fit after break. Hopefully the pair you end up with doesn't have that problem!

I'm new to boots. Were they tight when new and did they stretch overtime?
@jessupsays
@jessupsays Год назад
Welcome! Tight is relative. Some parts of some leather stretches. But I would say that no shoes should ever start out "tight" per say. For example for me I might have tightness across my little toes. This could either be the shoe is too narrow, or short, or that the leather needs to stretch out a little bit! Sorry I know it's not a straight forward answer. Do you have an example you're curious/ concerned about?
@JFomo

@@jessupsays I tried some on today and they were an 8G and they were a little tight width wise. Then I tried an 8H which apparently is a wide and they were too wide. There was no 8.5G to try on. Tomorrow I'm going to go to the R.M Williams store on my lunch break and see if they have an 8.5G.

Can't stand my RM Williams boots. I feel ripped off. I bought the Tanbark Kangaroo with leather sole. I've had them for a year and I'm the opposite of you. Absolutely cannot wear them in the rain unless you want to fall over or skate to work. Any rain and water in general discoloures the leather, sometimes permanently. The leather finish has worn off in multiple places. Also they're the most uncomfortable boot I've owned. For $700, not good enough! I've had better experience with a pair of cheapo Wild Rinos.
@jessupsays
@jessupsays 11 месяцев назад
A lot to unpack there. But in essence, support a company that you feel you can, and if they do badly, tell them with your money. I'd never tell you otherwise. Poor quality leather soles aren't the best in rain. But some of your points are a little inaccurate, though again it's your experience so I'm sorry it's been a bad one. A higher quality leather would not have this issue. It's a shame they've skimped on quality. I agree with your principle point, for $700 they do need to do better. Please. Please. Don't buy wild rhino. Even less comfortable, the RM could have the sole changed, internals changed. And you could have a great boot. Especially with kanga uppers, a great and quality material. Again, a shame but you aren't alone in this.

@jessupsays
@jessupsays 10 месяцев назад
Thanks for the suggestion. But you're not right on the price, these boots are over $500aud minimum, within RM pricing. The materials look similar but idk if they're the same. Plus their website is beyond awful. I can't imagine this is a solution that most people would take the risk to try. Thanks for the suggestion though
@oliverk191
@oliverk191 10 месяцев назад
They are superior judging by the construction method. They use brass screw construction, a method even r.m say is superior but don't use on all their boots. As for the price in the UK r.m s are £400 and Harrold boots are £220. Yearling leather, carbon fiber shank. They are identical alveti a superior construction method
@jessupsays
@jessupsays 10 месяцев назад
This may be so, but for most people screw is more complex to repair/ replace. Also looking at their site (which is insanely bad, and they might be closed???) it seems they use a range of construction from Blake to GYW, I don't see screw anywhere there. If you can get them at that price, and they're what you say. You've found a great deal mate. And even though I live ~30mins from where these are purportedly made, you can get a better deal than I can. What a weird world. Thanks for the suggestion! Might have to see if I can't visit the factory and see whats what.

@@jessupsays Yeh I may snap a pair up fast ... They are made in Vietnam hence the lower price than r.m. r m Williams seems to be lowering the quality of their products overall and I don't like it when a company does this. It's a bad sign of things to come.
@jessupsays
@jessupsays 10 месяцев назад
@oliverk191 personally I'll always take made in Aus vs Vietnam. The cost of wages isn't even remotely comparable. For a veit boot I'd expect to pay a mini -60% for wages alone. I've done a few videos of RM and their perceived quality. I agree it's not ideal, but I don't think it's changed in the last 5 years at least. Except the price going up!! Which I absolutely don't agree with haha. Let me know how they go if you get a pair!
