My first tarantula was a rose hair, she was such a good spider, never refused a meal she was really cute, she was the angriest creature in existence though she would bite everything that moved, she was my little baby though and she would toss rocks at the walls of her enclosure. She lived to be 27 years old.

You just made my day with this video. I've been in the pro camp for years, and although I understand that they have some traits that keep them out of the "top beginner species" spot (varied temperaments, slow growth rate, and the fasting), they still have so many good qualities. And I can't tell you how many folks got interested in this hobby after keeping them (rather than be turned off, as some would argue). I still have my old girl, and she is my favorite tarantula in my collection. I got her 23 years ago, and she was about 4.5" then. She's an OLD girl. x100 likes! :)

PS; interestingly, our Rose girls always eat. They’re our most reliable. Our home is also really warm and our 1.5yr slings have molted twice in the last four months! We are thrilled! Ours are really “friendly” in that they will come out when we open the lids and will actually “play” tugging games with us with their plants. They seem to enjoy this weird game. None of the four has ever kicked a hair. They are also incredible burrow artists! Our slings made the coolest turrets! The adults routinely “rearrange their furniture” and we enjoy watching. They’re a great one for introducing our young ones to T’s without too much fear. :) Just WINS here. We are in the pro column for sure. Thanks, Kat!

I love how real you are about everything. "All tarantulas are pet rocks" 👍😄. I don't understand people that get a tarantula as a pet and say "they don't do anything" or "they just sit there". They aren't going to play fetch. I have always thought of them more as a display pet (while having an amazing creature to care for). I think all tarantula are beautiful in their own way. Some have the strikingly bright colors and others beauty is in their ability to blend into their surroundings. I love your rose hair with her subtle shimmering pink areas on her carapace and her long hairs. She is perfect. Thanx for another awesome video. You rock!!! Love you.

My second tarantula was a Poecilotheria as well, but it is a P. regalis. My first was a pamphobeteus sp machala that matured male. pamphobeteus are very good eaters and fast growers so not the worst first spider but they are big and bold so they are definitely intimidating

My grammastola rosea is the sweetest tarantula ever. I know tarantulas dont "like" to be handled but she is very nice to me and lets me handle her for sometimes long periods of time. I dont hold her for very long anymore because i almost lost her once but she would just sit on me while I watch youtube or something. She once fasted for almost a year and a half. And she likes to dig.

Ive had my old porteri "Cory" for about 18 years and she's still going strong. I hate how many people in the hobby pass them off, but out of my 73 current Ts, she has the most personality. She's like a cranky old granny that wants you to get off her yard. She was also the spider that helped get my wife into tarantulas. Great video and glad to see more rosie love!

Thank gosh for you and your videos. Finally another channel with some serious experience and insight, instead of the typical "oh it could bite you once in a while, not a good pet blah blah blah". Literally my two T's are my FAVORITE pets! Yes, they are slow and just kind of sit there and that's what I love about them! My first T was a G. Rosea and she has never once bit in the 4 years I have had her. Compare that to your typical cat or dog scratches/bites, I have hands down lost more blood and had more pain due to one dog/cat than I have ever received from a T.

Rose hairs are underrated, they are beautiful. My uncle has one that is at least 24 years old but was a mature female when bought so probably a good bit older, it lives in a 10 gallon glass aquarium 60% full of dirt and is kept in an unheated room in Montana that sometimes gets into the 40s. These girls are sturdy for sure, though I suspect that the extra substrate helps insulate the spider which is why it can handle being in such a cold room. He said it went over a year without eating on multiple occasions and usually doesnt eat anything in the winter, the conditions are extreme and I would never risk that for my spiders but it has lived a long time.

Tarantula heaven has a gorgeous rose hair, the world famous Spidey. Species maule or the red color form in my opinion are the best looking. I've also heard from several sources that there are cases of the tan color form and the red color form being in the same egg sac, but who knows? I have to get something in this genus, maybe G grossa or G inheringi. One of these is on my bucket list.

I had one back in the early/mid 90's, and they are as easy to care for as it gets. Also pretty easy to handle. Mind did spook once for some reason and ran off my arm and landed on the carpet, then tried to book it under the bed. When I went to cut it off it raised up and bared its fangs at me. Only time it ever did that, and I'm sure it is because it fell.

I think Rose Hair Tarantulas are beautiful. That's mostly what I have been keeping for the past 30-35 years. I have one that I have had since March 12, 1998. She was given to me by a friend. Her friend had it then decided they didn't want it anymore. She has been doing fine since I got her. I have another one that I have had since April 10, 2006. I have had several species of Tarantulas over the yeas. I have had a Green Bottle Blue, a pink Toe, a Curly Hair, a Mexican Red Leg, a Mexican Red Knee, a Striped Knee and a few others. I've had a male Rose Hair, but he didn't live long after he got his mating hooks. I wanted to try and pair him with one of the females, but didn't get a chance, and I was kind of afraid that one of them would kill him. I love Tarantulas.

So... I pretty much agree with everything that you pointed out that people dislike about the rose hair tarantulas. But having said that I have a grammostola rosea I believe, I believe it is a female oh, but it has never molted in the year-and-a-half that I have had her. She just ate last week for the first time in a little over a year. She is probably the size of your adult Rose Hair so given how slow they grow I'm guessing that she is probably 5 to 8 years old at least maybe more. Apparently somebody got bored and tired of her and gave her to one of my favorite local pet stores and I bought her enclosure and all and I absolutely love her. I think she is beautiful, she's never thrown a threat posture and her butt is big and every hair in place so she is not a kicker. Rose hairs are awesome! That being said as far as a good first trantula, if you don't have patience it would not make a good first trantula for you but if you loved beautiful tarantulas in general and have the patience they are awesome addition to any collection. Thank you for the video it was wonderful to hear someone bring up all of these points.
@GothikSamurai1

I love rose hairs personally. If anything my only complaint would be they aren't highly available as bigger juveniles or adults since they stopped importing and grow so slow. So if you want a decent sized one it can be tough to find sometimes obviously. Other than "They grow at about the rate of stalactites" I can't think of anything bad about them in my eyes. Since that slow growth means long lived i wouldn't even say that's bad really. Just something to consider more than a plus or negative by default. All the other complaints people have about them I pretty much think are pretty unfair.

I had a rose hair, she was awesomely nice. I had a Mexican Red Knee when I was a kid. She was awesomely nice for years, until I bumped it's leg with something hard, the ear part of my glasses. After that, she was completely defensive at all times, for years following, no matter what. One bump with anything stiff at all on a leg, can be a permanent deal breaker for them. That's reasonable too, I'd change the same way if it were me.

Would personally never own anything from the Grammostola genus. My first T (if the hubby allows) will definitely be a Brachypelma.

Hello tarantula kat how are you I enjoyed your video and liked your video very much I do not have any new world tarantulas Because they can kick hairs it can cause respiratory problems and vision problems I only have old world tarantulas I respect them and use caution when I’m around them during feeding time

My 1st T is a Chilean Rose Hair. And they grow so slow. I got a CGK few days later and now it's 3 times bigger than my rosea 🤣🤣

i considered a grammastola to be my first. I decided for a albipolosum and a cyanepubescence for my firsts but i could have easily chosen a grammastola. The only hindrance was really their slow growth and for a beginner you want to see them eat so sometimes a year without eating was not appealing. Other than that beautiful tarantulas
