📈 Check Scrap Prices: iScrapApp.com/ - Recently Tom wanted to take a look at a sealed unit himself to see what kind of copper can be recovered from it. Recently he shared his reaction to a video about sealed units and wanted to see if it would be worth it to scrap. If you have multiple units, taking them apart in an assembly line may be worth it, as long as your yard pays for the copper at a reasonable price compared to sealed units prices.

Not worth it. Modyly alu now and no copper and u get 23 cents a lbs with the oil drained for the whole thing

I cut them up, pisses ya off when you hit a full or half aluminum one, spent time to lose money lol. Either way I think the bigger ones are worth the time to cut up

Lol. I get most of my copper from motors. I collect up 25-30 compressors and do em all at once.

I always take mine apart. I find it worth my time. I get mostly these in my scrap pile anyway.

No one is going to drain the oil when selling them whole.

You got that right regardless of what anyone says. Me i drain the oil and strip out the copper. And reuse the oil later. I have seen where people have tried to take them apart and give up. It's not an easy or clean process, even drained. Most people don't have time to wait 4 or 5 days for one to look like in the video. Thanks for clearing up about the copper

I cut with a plasma cutter after draining the oil. But I do have a question the inside metal is that prepared steel to you yard or shredded steel price?

thats a big boy tool but Typically a sealed unit if drained and ripped up would likely go as shred. Prepared are typically much neater items of stripped and cleaned steel

Copper is getting ready for another big move. Everything else has gone up, why not commodities? Don't give your copper away at low prices.

A grinder is ok but i cut about 50 per week so i bought a decent plasma cutter and now i can do these in less than half the time it takes with a grinder. If you get a plasma it makes compressors worth processi in. I make a lot of money from them.

Some yards have "NO OIL" policies

Sump pumps, pressure washer, fridge compressors, etc, are oil filled, so have a plan to drain oil. I leave it in front of mechanic to drain, hope he doesn't mind.

The problem is often the yard that you go to. My yards require either to much documentation in regards to them or they will just buy them as steal so that they can cut them open.

wow . iff you got over 50 cut them up .i just cut the top and cut a 3 inch line on the both and last cut a line down it

Worth it for me to remove the copper. I have these down to a science. I rarely use an angle grinder for these since I found Diablo Carbide blades. They last a VERY long time. Be careful with them, and they'll service you for multiple jobs. But fact is, I don't believe my yard would pay me an adequate price if at all for sealed units. Can't say I blame them since the question would remain if it's copper or aluminum.

I use a plasma cutter for these. I'll do about 10 - 20 at a time. Abrasive cutoff saw and an air hammer to remove the copper windings. Cut tops first, leave them to drain, cut bottoms, cut down the center, knock out motor, cut one end of the copper windings in the cuttoff, place motor in vice and air hammer out the other side. Not really tools and a set up that a normal weekend warrior scrapper is going to have.

When they are vertical you always have to cut it vertical to give it wrong to slide out easily. Takes about two extra minutes. Good video tom

The thing most people don’t think about while there taking these apart they could be going out and getting more scrap and get paid from the scrap yard faster then taking them apart Now that being said if you have the proper tools and a way to get rid of the oil you can save them up and do a bunch at one time on a rainy day and make a little extra but it is a lot of work
