Been wanting to shoot this one for a while. Initially I wanted to shoot it during a real storm. But we didnt get any storms worth talking about this year. I'd say easily 4 hours worth of wasted footage. So I decided in this approach.
I actually enjoy it somewhat. I hate psyching myself up. And the cold shock can be rough. But you get a endorphin rush just like a hard work out or really spicy meal.
Dip matches and strikers in paraffin wax. Cheap and it works for way less than$3.50 . Wax burns good and helps a little. And if I need lint or something , I check my belly button. Never know what I can find in there!
Have a piece of "wet sanding paper 220 grit" this sandpaper is used to wet sand cars and will not fall apart from contact with water, It makes a great striker..
I'll have to look for some next time I'm at the hardware store and test it. I think the problem is more eith the match head getting wet after the strike when the waterproof coating is rubbed away.
@Delon Duvenage south africa that's a interesting place. Yea we are all mixed forest up here. I live in a lot of historic farm land. So a lot of areas are really dense and grown up from when the land once upon a time was a open cattle field. The land I live on actually used to be a cattle field but now we have birch trees and mixed hardwoods 30 to 50 feet tall and it's all marsh.
I agree. The problem is I'm a sole operator. I dont really have anyone that can come with me when I need to shoot. If I can plan them out ahead of time I do. But sometimes its spur of the moment and needs to get shot.
I like adding the sense of realism plus cold tolerance training is something I practice. Ferrocerium will spark in the rain. But it is a matter if finding tinder dry enough to take the spark.
