At work I prefer a TKL with a separate numpad on the left. I do a lot of CAD at work and i like being able to input numbers quickly w/out having to take my hand off the mouse. I am really surprised with how many people are saying they dont use the numpad. It's sooo much faster than trying pick numbers out of a line

i think its preference. i myself is a full keyboard fan. i dont usually use them as numpad i bind them for something else and the enter key next to my right thumb is perfect.

I think I might have to try this. My desk is very limited in how much space I have on the right, but has tons of room on the left.

I love my numpad but at home i don't use it much. I would rather have the space I think. Tough choices.
@Perfidion

Yeah, the numpad is the business when it comes to numerical data entry (punching in account numbers without it sucks)... but otherwise, it's kind of redundant. I mean, when I'm not at work, the numpad on my Logitech is basically a dust trap.

doesn't numpads feature most of the arrow keys and insert to pg-down button if you toggle numlock, could probably achieve something if you cut out arrow keys instead of the numpad it would be one more row of buttons though. paying stuff would be annoying without a numpad.

Nice video concept. I don't know where I stand on the subject TBH. I have a full size and have had full size KBs for a long time. I don't use the numpad very often but feel I'd miss it if it wasn't there. Truth is I would no doubt get used to working with out it. Think I'd have to try one for a while along side my full size one to see. Good job as ever dude

I bought a tkl, and quickly learned how often I used that side enter.. It was tough getting used it, but I don't think I will go back. I love how much space I have now. Now that I think of it, my mouse has a button I never use. Maybe I could program it to function as an enter key!

Yes they are right for me! I love having more desk space for my mouse and love having less sized keyboards! I never thought I would say that, but i went on the 10 keyless kick about a year ago...and never ever went back o.o they are ultra amazing and allow for so much for desk space, flexibility, mouse space and precision. AND the mouse is literally RIGHT THERE next to you and you press enter. i used the numpad maybe 3 percent of the time lol. it's great im never going back to the other ones

If one of the reasons for TKL is room/ergonomics, why have no Keyboard makers placed the numpad on the LEFT of the WASD?? Patent worthy

some have removeable numpads. but i dont see any real advantage in placing it to the left. for normal writing it would be a hindrance and for gamer it would be same as macro keys. plus perhaps there are other people like me. even a small row of macro keys makes a keyboard damn uncomfortable for me.
@Catcrumbs
@Catcrumbs 4 года назад
@@TheHomerGE it's pretty obvious what the advantage is: you get the ergonomics of TKL + mouse but the functionality of a 100%kb. The only downside compared to a traditional setup is getting used to using the numpad with your left hand.

Just bought a KB Paradise V60 Mini with black gateron switches off Massdrop. It's a 60% board, so the function row, arrowkeys and pgup/down/home/del keys are under macros. Really happy to be sizing down from a Steelseries 6GV2!

@CanuckGod

For me it's the latter reason that you listed that keeps me with full size keyboards - I have macros set to all the numkeys - and also the positive of having the numpad there for quick entry when I use it for that purpose (which isn't all that often, but it helps). I do also find myself using the side enter a fair bit too, so there's that.

Been on TKL 87 keys for years and have never looked back. I currently use the Corsair K65 Rapidfire RGB, I love the small form factor on TKLs because it saves space on my cluttered desk, and it allows me to position my mouse closer to my keyboard.

Bought a TKL keyboard and have been super happy with it (MX Brown + CoolerMaster MasterKeys Pro S). About 2 months later I started regretting it when college classes started up and I had a MS Access and MS Excel classes back to back so I grabbed a wireless numpad on Amazon for $8. Now that those classes are over, I re-mapped it to be a macro-pad. Thing is super useful and runs off 1 AAA battery.

Harambabe I got used to not use it in only 2 days. And I'm never looking back at a full keyboard. TKL just makes everything so easier. And you don't have to pay for a numpad you barely use, assuming you're mostly gaming on your PC and don't enter too many numbers everyday.

these arguments make sens... for an english keyboard. Because on my french one for example I really need an numpad to write numbers without switching to caps to use the one over the letters because these are already used for our special letters such as éèçà and so on.

I used a TKL until I've started to work with programming seriously. Then I went back to my old Mionix ZIBAL 60, which I've found to be an absolute wonder. Solid build, perfect wristrest, and the full size is alot easier for me to code on than my TKL K65 ever was. Granted I do not use the numpad that often, but i find it alot easier than having a separate one connected to my computer whenever I'm paying bills and such. ALSO: Cherry MX black switches are totally underrated, as is this Mionix Zibal 60 keyboard.
@miguelagueda3928
@miguelagueda3928 7 лет назад
I've been using a TKL for about a year and I'm really happy with it. It's really portable and it takes very little space on my desk, since it's not that big. The lack of numpad hasn't been a big deal for me, but if I ever need it intensively I'll just get an external one, with the benefit of being able to place it wherever I want. You can even get them mechanical now, I've seen a few in places like massdrop.

Been using an HHKB Pro 2 for a few months now and I absolutely love the modified 60% layout. I really believe that smaller keyboards are more efficient especially when you get below 60% because of finger travel. If you look at keyboards like the HHKB keys like backspace are so much easier to hit

How about the Tesoro Tizona? They use Kailh switches and they don't seem to get many positive reviews but they have a usb port on the left and right sides where you can attach a numpad.
@Montisaquadeis
@Montisaquadeis 7 лет назад
The Tesoro Tizona is the ONLY keyboard I have been able to find that allows you to attach the keypad to the left. For me that would be the ideal side for the keypad as it allows me to move my hands closer when gaming and allow for mouse use when enter numbers which I do several times a day and kind of rely on my numpad but I just wish I could move it to the left which would be a much better spot for me. Also the Tesoro Tizona is pretty cheap with its starting price of $70 comapred to something like the Claymore which is $150 for just the core and $250-$290 for the full keyboard including the numpad.

Never tried one but I do use the numpad quite a lot so I don't really see myself getting one, but I can understand lots of people would like this over the traditional design. I bought the Red Dragon Kumara Mechanical TKL keyboard about 5 months ago and have loved it so far. My desk isn't necessarily cluttered with stuff, so a full length keyboard wouldn't be in the way, but I find the compact design of TKL keyboards more appealing to me personally. I only use computer for gaming, social media, and school work, so the absence of the number pad isn't that much of an issue for me.

4:42 "Moving on to the negatives... And don't even mention the lack of numpad..." TKL with a separate numpad is an option if you need to enter a lot of numbers occasionally, or prefer the numpad on the left-hand side.
@markotikvic
@markotikvic 7 лет назад
Pytte how often do you enter keys? Two possible answers: a) very often - you should be proficient enough with top row as well as the numpad = no problem b) not often enough for you to care = no problem

I use a Coolermaster Quickfire TK, and I really love the design of it. It has everything that I need and I wish more companies made this style of keyboard since you can have the size of a TKL but with the capabilities of a full size. But I am looking to explore some 68% sizes (like the poker sized with arrow keys), and it would cut out more fluff I don't need on keyboards on a daily driver.

Savva Moser £60 or so is pretty cheap for a decent quality keyboard with genuine Cherry MX switches. I've had the K65 for a couple of years - after having played around with far more expensive options trying to find something I liked - and it's an excellent TKL.

This video feels like he's SUPER biased towards TKL keyboards.... "TKL Looks better on your desk" - Entirely subjective "Full Size will overlap with mousepad and be wobbly" - Uhh.. Only if you overlap them, and do so in a silly way... "Keyboard will be centered in front of your monitor" - Can still do that with a full size, and if it's off center, so what? "TKL keyboards have better build quality" - Uhhh.... wat? "Don't even mention the missing num pad" - Uhh.. Yeah.. Let's just gloss right over the biggest disadvantage. Who ever types numbers in their computer anyways? Absolutely no mention of the fact that TKL keyboards are more often missing media and macro keys. TKLs have their place, but this video should be titled "Why I Like TKL Keyboards" and not passed off as advice for others.

How on earth can you center a non-tkl keyboard in front of your monitor? Please do tell me. Also, the reason why I went with a tkl keyboard personally is so that I could center my keyboard in front of my monitor. I found it was a real pain in the butt whenever I wanted to start typing but my left hand and right hand would be at completely different lengths away from the keyboard thereby making my typing experience absolutely abysmal.
@Balot_Rune
@Balot_Rune 6 лет назад
while I would agree that TKL looking better on your desk is subjective, the point of having a full size keyboard centered and having no issues is not always the case as it more often than not depends on the size of your monitor and having the keyboard centered can help you to feel less tired after spending hours typing something (not to mention the streches you should do on a regular basis), the point of better build quality is just for the fact that they flex less during transportation - but that is an irrelevant point to you isn't it? the missing num pad is the whole reason you would consider a TKL board and not a medium sized one he mentioned at the start of the video. he also DID mention the lack of dedicated media controls as for macro keys - they don't belong on a keyboard you would get only for the reason of having a minimalist setup (which he is mainly focusing his attention on in the video anyways)

not worth getting a TKL IMO, removes versatility. also, he did not mention anything about doing any sort of math or school work. It's terrible using a TKL. you NEED that Num pad to be entering a large volume of numbers! torture without and shit tons of mistakes due to the spread. Also, this review was horrible as this guy was obviously extremely biased towards TKL. he should have titled it "Why i think TKL keyboards are better." DERRR

I have a $40 TKL keyboard from DREVO (I just wanted to see if mechanical keyboards were worth the hype). I love the small form factor of this thing. The smaller distance between mouse and typing thing should not be underestimated. It feels so good to just hop from mouse to keyboard with so much less effort.

Great video Dmitri. I am just an old guy that wants to type word docs etc, I do not game. So I just want a simple TKL keyboard with no lights etc. But as you say, they are so hard to find. And they are so dear. I love my Microsoft wired 600 keyboard but it just takes up too much room on my desk. I hope the trend is towards TKL, then they might make more of them at better prices.
@bigmofo1122

TKL are stupid (i own one). What we really need is 'lefty keyboard', where they arrow part and the numpad part are on the left side. Having these extra key on the right side made sense before the mouse. But fully removing them is stupid because we could just move them to the right side instead. HardwareCuck, find us decent lefty mechanical keyboards and do a review. I would disable my ads block for this.
@MGBatman98
@MGBatman98 7 лет назад
dude leftys can use regular keyboards. design wise it's just weird to have the arrows on the left side.
@bigmofo1122
@bigmofo1122 7 лет назад
That is just your preference. Having arrow on the left side is not 'weirder' than not having them at all. I'll rather have room for the mouse where the arrow/numpad are... and have the arrow/numpad on the left side in case i ever need them.

But by moving the arrows and the numpad to the left, the keyboard length remains the same, so you wouldn't gain any extra mouse room. (I'm a lefty myself, and did fine all my life with regular full sized keyboards. I just got a K65 and I'm looking it)
@bigmofo1122
@bigmofo1122 7 лет назад
"But by moving the arrows and the numpad to the left, the keyboard length remains the same" Irrelevant because you center the keyboard on the space bar. Whatever hang over the other side don't matter. As long as there are 'close to' center room for the mouse on the other side.

You know what they say about the size of your keyboard, amirite? (A: that is really good to have a small one for your compact desk) I'm always hitting it with the mouse when I'm gaming, so this video actually make me choose a TKL keyboard for my next upgrade! Keep it up with the useful videos man, thanks so much!

Got into the idea of a TKL thanks to Corsair and their K70, but after dealing with some design issues (personal, not functional) I sold the K70 and got the CoolerMaster Pro Key S and have loved it ever since. Super compact, saves space and just feels amazing. I *HIGHLY* recommend getting a TKL for saving space. Yes I still miss the numpad but you can always get a cheapo bluetooth one with a dongle and have that on the side for when you're number crunching like a madman.

I like a TKL for couch gaming, but I'm still too reliant on the number pad to make the switch elsewhere. For me, I think the ideal solution would be a left-handed number pad. It would also allow me to enter numbers while still keeping my right hand on the mouse. Maybe I'll eventually move to a TKL with a separate number pad. Of course, I'm still using a G13 & macro keys on my main keyboard as well, so it might just end up being too much on the left.

I have Ozone Strike Battle, which is TKL keyboard I bought spontaneously both because I used to only play when visiting cousin with a laptop and it was cheap. I never regretted the decision. It's sturdy and reliable, it comes with a software, but it doesn't required to use it. Other than that, i'm thinking of upgrading to Logitech G Pro TKL

In my country, there's a company named vortex series that primarily makes gaming chairs, but they also made this tkl keyboard which costs like 50 bucks, and it had 3 versions, one with Gateron, Outemu, and Cherry switches, the Gateron and Outemu versions are cheaper than the Cherry boards, but the cherry boards are still quite affordable.

I quite like my Claymore Core, I have the cherry Red version, and being my first red keyboard I was very surprised, the thing comes with a velvet like carry case and the best part imo is the ability to system boot, change fan speed, ram OC right from the keyboard (pretty sure only if you have an Asus motherboard though, correct me if I'm wrong) I love the keyboard, it's comfortable and looks sexy as hell 👍🏼
