Are the Newer Model Butane Stoves Actually Better? - How to buy a good one!

In this video I wanted to see if I could make an older butane stove function more efficiently like the newer ones that are being sold on the market. Does the newer design actually make a difference? I show what I did, but any changes that you make are AT YOUR OWN RISK! My recommendation is that you just buy a new model with the upgrade shown in this video. They are not very expensive.
I like my butane camp stove for its convenience and how compact it is, but those 1lb butane bottles are so inefficient! When they are near empty, but not empty enough to throw them away, the flow of gas slows waaaaaay down so that all you get is a small flame! Some newer models of these stoves have a new feature that helps with this problem, but I show you the difference between the old and the new.

Top tip, some of those stoves have exploded due to the canister overheating from using a wide frying pan which reflects the heat back to the canister causing an explosion and fire burning down your tent... Advise not to use anything that overhangs any part of the canister area!
@gonagain

Good warning. Never use too big of a pan that will spread the flame out to where it can heat the fuel bottle.
@dungeonmastervenger
@dungeonmastervenger Год назад
Unfortunately, there will be some that will try this modification in an effort to extend the burn time while at the same time using an oversized pan to prepare more food specially in remote locations that will not have those bottles in stock at a loca Walmart. I would advise to include a warning at the beginning, end and the middle and a banner “At your own RISK” on this video.

I see your Bluetti there. I just ordered one on 3/09 a EB55 but didn't receive it although they charged my card right away (3/25 I still do NOT have it)....heads up, you can't call anyone, they do not respond to emails. Can't contact tech support...there IS NO SUPPORT. I found the "community chat" through Google, someone there got through to someone at Bluetti who sent me an email message to be patient? That's customer support? When $1000 is charged but you can't find out where your purchase is, speak to anyone, get support, not even told when to expect it....HEADS UP....promoting the product.

Did you buy your Bluetti through Amazon? If you did, then you need to go directly back to Amazon. If you bought it from Bluetti then it will take longer for it to arrive. Communication is harder because of the language barrier and sometimes what they say doesn't seem quite right. They just came out with the new "S" series ( EB55S and EB70S) and I know that they are backlogged because of that. Did you get a tracking number yet?

Tech-Tip: pressurized liquid fuels like butane and propane must be able to boil to produce enough pressure to be forced through the plumbing and oriface so it can be burned. Much below about 45F and butane appliances like these stoves and cigarette lighters get rather cranky. As the fluid fuel boils due to pressure release, because you're channeling fuel vapor away for use, the temperature of the containment vessel will decrease. It's the same principle that allows air conditioners to work. If you don't provide external heat the temperature of the tank will drop so much that it will be too cold for the fuel to boil, right around 32F for butane.
@StewieGriffin505

hi rick - great information for heating up the butane canister - thanks! i'm going to try it on my on my older stoves. fyi - in case you might need another stove sometime and don't want to pay amazon prices - if you have an asian market in great falls, or you want to check one out on your travels, they sell gas-one stoves in two sizes - the large ones like your's are $18.99 and the small ones are a little more at $25.99. i paid $45 on amazon for a small one, and then a week after i found one at the asian grocery so much cheaper. they sell the butane for $1.25 a canister too, and if you buy a case you get four for free. i hope linda is doing much better now - hopefully walking without much pain. thanks again for the stove tips.

They would, but the cost would negate any gain. The other day, using an unmodified stove, I just placed my hand on the bottle and that was enough to get it working great. Oh the irony.!!! First off well presented, clear and precise description of the modification. The irony is that here in Australia 🇦🇺 there was an issue of a couple of cases of the propane tank becoming too hot and bursting. The main cause of this was using too large a pan that then deflected excessive heat on to the canister. All the “old” style stoves were removed from the market and a big scare campaign to stop people using them until the next generation was brought out onto the market. The next generation incorporated an over pressure protection to disconnect the vapour flow if the pressure goes above a certain level. Now the “frozen cans”. The stoves rely on gas “vapour” to burn 🔥. Below a certain temp the liquid propane will not vaporise. The pressure drop inside the propane canister drops to such a level it appears to freeze (just the same as a refrigerator works. That’s were the added “heat sink” helps to keep the propane vaporising to use up every last bit in the can. I hope this is useful. Happy camping 🏕 and stay safe and well

You made me do math and now my head hurts! A pound of butane contains about 21,000 BTUs and these are 8oz cans, so figure about 10,500 BTUs in a can. Most of these stoves burn 7,500 per hour on high so you would get about an hour and a half per 8 oz. can of butane.
@gonagain
@gonagain 2 года назад
The modification I've shown in the video will only allow a small amount of heat to reach the bottle to warm it slightly. A word of caution concerning the use of these stoves! Always follow the instructions and the most important instruction is to NEVER use a pan that extends over the butane fuel bottle (or can). This can cause the can to overheat and explode. The price of 8oz. cans of butane for these stoves has gone through the roof along with all other types of fuel. I just bought 12 cans off of Ebay for $35.00 including shipping so search around a little for the best deals. Try this outlet for fuel: www.webstaurantstore.com/search/butane-fuel.html 03/25/2022

your design can also be used on the model with the slide. Just let the aluminium plate rest on the slide. The slide will still move the cannister while it rest on the plate.

On the yellow one, I don't see why you can't do the same. Just make it lay on top of the moving metal. That way it wouldn't keep it from engaging.

I’m going to try this with my older propane burner. My sister gave me a newer model this past Christmas that has the fancier features. Ok, I have a question. Probably 2 years ago you did a video that talked about your then sleeping arrangements in the trailer. You were using a cot that I believe you called a roll cot. Would you still recommend this cot? I’m in the market for a new cot and I’m considering this cot. Thanks for the advice.
@philiptong4978

consider propane boils at -42C instead of ~0C for straight butane, unless gas container is cold enough, preheating gas line or container would not be necessary for stove cooking, unless your goal is higher pressure (before the regulator)
@gonagain
@gonagain 2 года назад
The Roll-a-Cot worked so well for us that after building our bunks in the trailer, we took them to our off-grid cabin and used them there. Be sure to put down an air mattress/pad and you'll be very comfortable.

Some great things about the Roll-a-cot: one, the bed is a plastic mesh. We used to take ours on canoe trips in Alaska because they are easy to rinse off and dry. Sand or water doesn’t damage them. I now have a van to camp in and have put my Roll-a-cot in it. A 5” memory foam cot mattress makes it feel like a regular bed. Also, most camp cots have 3 sets of legs under them. The Roll-a-cot has only 2 sets of legs, one on each end, so stowing bins and bags under them is so easy. Their height is also convenient and comfortable for sitting. I sit on the foot of my bed and cook my morning coffee and other meals on my butane stove which is on a wooden box my husband made. The cots are also extremely durable. I have dragged mine thousands of miles and camped in a dozen states and they are no worse for the wear. I can’t recommend them enough. They are 30” wide so that is the same as one half of a queen size bed which is all I need to be comfy!

Also if using at lower elevation don't assume it is empty. Those cans will be good for one more use when going up in elevation. Also don't use the click start. Wastes a lot of fuel , use a lighter for instant instead of losing gas the whole time you are turning the knob. Always disengage the can manually. Don't rely on the stove to do it. I've had one drain a can. I've also had one still lit even with all the safeties.

Timely video!! I have had multiple stoves in the 7500 btu range without the heat sink., My remedy was usually warming the can in water or with my hands.. I had also thought of warming the can and then putting s piece of reflectix On the can.. Recently been considering buying a Iwatani stove in 15000btu range but read some of the burners meltdown., In the end I settled on a Eureka sprk 12500 btu with the heatsink in it.. I love this stove and the case that came with it seems very robust.. Something that everyone should remember is each can of fuel only had a value of so many btu’s.. If you have a powerful stove the fuel cylinder is not going to last as long as less powerful model unless you use at lower flame height.. Also, I buy my fuel at a restaurant supply store or Asian markets.. Usually half the price of a big box store.,
@gonagain
@gonagain 2 года назад
Thanks, David. The cases that come with most of these stoves don't last very long, so you did well. Now I know why this 15,000BTU stove has a brass burner!

price per # from butane an propane.....lp gas is far cheaper than non refillable butane cans....that being said dont use the green lp cans unless you have the refill connectors an just get a 20lb tank with the adapter hose! and butane will not work at 32 degrees but lp gas will....smarty pants XD

In the UK you can buy gas canisters with 70% butaine, and 30% propane. Because propane freezes at a lower temperature, the gas still flow when it's cold? Like your channel.

It might be hard to find the balance to get just enough heat for the liquified gas to evaporate and not blowing the canister up due to overheating.
@gonagain
@gonagain 7 месяцев назад
The canister only needs to be warmed slightly. The purpose of the video was to show that it works, but the price of the stove itself is so reasonable that I suggest just buying one that already has the warmer installed.

Did you check the gas consumption on the newer stove compared to the older stove? I imagine the 15,000 BTU stove would be using a lot more gas to produce that heat?
@gonagain
@gonagain 2 года назад
Oh yeah, it will use the fuel twice as fast, but we just turn it down so that the flame doesn't extend out past the bottom of the pot, which wastes gas.

@gonagain
@gonagain 2 года назад
Hello Matthias. No, it's not dangerous, because only enough heat makes it to the bottle to warm it up slightly. However, never put a wide pan on the burner that extends over the bottle. That can lead to an explosion.

Slightly off topic but..... I had a similar stove that only ran hot or very hot. It wouldn't run low when I wanted to simmer wat I was cooking. With so many stoves as you have, have you experienced trying to throttle back the flame? which brands would throttle back? I tossed out mine when it leaked gas where it connected to the bottle. I couldn't figure out how to fix it.
@gonagain
@gonagain 2 года назад
Our propane stoves don't throttle back very well, but we put a flame diffuser (amzn.to/3rdVsJF) under the pan to help simmer. These butane stoves are perfect for simmering and that's why so many Asian restaurants use them at your table.

With the cooker with the moving platform could you fix the heating plate to the side and have a floating platform?
@gonagain

Not sure about that but most of the newer stoves have the warm plate installed.
