Are the Panasonic Leica Lenses Worth it? or are they "All Fur Coat and No Knickers?"

The Pansonic Leica Partnership has been long-standing and nearly spanning 2 decades.
The tech and optics giants have benefitted hugely sharing knowledge to aid each other's efforts in their respective camera markets.
I believe if nothing else, Panasonic has gone on to create quality lenses for their cameras. Whether or not Leica is to thank for that I don't think we can ever know for sure.
The partnership gave them a badge that people in the camera world could look to and be reassured by. I think it gave Panasonic time to learn and develop their own optics in a better way.

The 10-25mm lives on my G9, There is no other lens that has this range across all camera platforms. The 20mm is great to show these massive landscapes and timelapse photography while 24, 35 and 50mm is great for more detailed shots and for shooting people. The quality of this lens is inmense. Now I am just hoping for a gh6 to show the world that m43 is alive and well.

Hey Band! Thanks for you live comment on the premier of the video 😎 the lens is so amazing! It's very expensive here, but seems worth it 😃 I'm probably going to get the 8-18mm but in the future the 10-25mm will be mine! Possibly with the newer release of the GH6! The ideal video lens for me ♥️

Hey Connor, yes the lens was a bit above budget, but I was able to sell many of my lenses instead. I now only own this lens + 42.5mm f/1.7 and the 100-300mm mark ii. Almost bought the sigma 18-35mm but it had too many cons. Really happy with this lens.

I think what people are forgetting is the incredible amount of engineering that goes into producing camera lenses. Ironically, for video people, the older, less refined glass now has "character". Also, optical lens patents.... Take the PL 10-25 f/1.7. The amount of optical engineering that went into getting an almost zero distortion wide angle to 50mm zoom at constant aperture with near zero focus breathing is enormous. Not to mention the AF lenses and motors, glass manufacturing, glass coatings and treatment. It's simple to twist the focus ring or the focal ring and forget about all the moving parts: certain lenses precisely moving in lock step to optically bend photons coming in on end and getting them to land tele-centrically on the sensor without any distortion, aberrations, and photon loss or back flare. In optical design, everything has a trade off because of physics. It takes years to figure this shit out. Compare the PL 10-25mm to the Canon RF 15-35. The canon has atrocious focus breathing...that may be fine for photography work but for video....it shows.

Well said Jesse! You're dead right 😎😎 I'd love to do a tour of a manufacturing facility, I've seen some stuff online but I'd love to film it and interview the staff and engineers! The PL 10-25 for me is such a pinnacle of lens design. Pretty much perfection. It's expensive but relatively affordable for what it covers if you were buying fast primes. I'll get it some day maybe when the newer GH6 releases 😄

I used Olympus for 16 years until I got the G9 except for one break in there when a Panasonic made their one and only 4/3 camera the L1 before producing m4/3 cameras. I kept the Leica 14-150 using the Olympus adapter for auto focus controls. It’s a great lens I don’t use much because I’m mostly a prime user but when you do need a zoom it’s a good one. Now I’ve tried several of Panasonic/Leica lenses and I have to tell you I prefer Olympus lenses on my G9 they deserve a lot more credit with their optics than they get.

Yo FRIEND! I hear you... I've used a few of the Oly lenses and was very impressed. I'm a sucker for uniformity and wanting the DUAL IS on my cameras so that's why I've tended to focus on Panasonic. That's not to take anything away from Olympus, they are putting out beautiful glass ❤

I hear great things about Olympus and I believe it! Thanks for your comment. I am considering buying Olympic lenses for my G9, but hesitant to buy anything else but Leica. Are you saying the Pro Series Olympus m43 lenses perform as well as Leica on your G9?

I know you made brief mention of Olympus, but while not the mythical status that Leica has, I think Olympus makes some incredible glass - especially the Pro series has incredible build quality as well as optical performance. As a M43 user, I love having the entire Panasonic/Leica/Olympus lens universe to choose from.
@CreativeConnor

Hey Scott! Thanks for such a considered comment. Love reading it! Oly glass is wonderful, I've used several in their lineup. I've always tended to lean toward the DUAL IS with the Panasonic lenses. But I have no doubt the Oly glass is top top quality 😃 What's your favourite Oly lens?

Until recently, that would have been easy. The 75 mm F/1.8 has been my most used and favorite lens since I switched to Olympus couple of years ago, and I have eight M. Zuiko lenses in all. I do a lot of portraiture, candids, and some weddings and I absolutely love the sharpness and the shallow depth of field I can get with that lens. You do need some elbow room to use it, and sometimes it is a little difficult in tight spaces. In those cases I have been going to the 45 mm F/1.8. However, I recently got a great deal on the 40 - 150 F/2.8 pro lens. I have been wanting that lens for a long time for some extra reach and versatility. I was not expecting that I would be able to blow out the background as well with it, but I find especially if I zoom all the way out to 150 mm, it does a fantastic job blurring out the background with beautiful bokeh. It is a bit large and heavy for micro 4/3, but still compact and light compared to the 70 to 200 f/2.8L I had with my CANON system. I will still be going to the 75 a lot, but time will tell if the 40-150 knocks it off the top spot in my lens lineup 😎

You are absolutely right, it is quite hard to say how much influence, contribution of Leica in Panasonic Leica branded lenses but ;) As dominantly Olympus shooter I do own two PanaLeica’s one is 15/1.7 which is absolutely marvellous, incredible compact, optically above any expectations lens. At the same time it has rendering of modern lens, no doubt. On other hand I have 25/1.4 gen II , which is absolutely different story. When I took first shots with it I was shocked, I saw absolutely classic Zeiss Sonnar 50/1.5 which I used long time ago on ZM cameras. I never had chance to use Leica M mount lenses, preferred Zeiss and 25/1.4 is blast from the past. Everything is so classy, charming. No, it is not soft as other reviewers think of it. No way! May be I breath too much of Leica magical dust ;) but I see excellent instrument for artist. Sharp enough to get everything what I need and smooth enough to get me right feeling. I absolutely love it, even I have Oly 25/1.2 I still love to snap 25/1.4 on GX9 and start wandering along streets ;) This is typical 50mm from rangefinder era of 50th. Not everyone will appreciate or understand it, definitely not majority of modern generation of photographers but for old farts like me - magic. Well done Panasonic !

Good stuff Connor. I love my Leica/Panasonic M4/3 lenses a lot, I have the 8-18 which is great and takes screw on ND filters, also the 15mm and 25mm primes. I wish I had the 12-60 but bought the 12-35 years ago, so I will stick with that. My other favourite is the 35-100mm internal zoom panasonic lens, absolutely beautiful results with that. Keep banging out the videos mate, love them.

The over-all wonderment of what my G9,. I refer to as my Mjolnir, will at least take me another year to discover and perfect with some form of advanced mediocrity. That said, like others, I have found a love for Prime lenses...especially with landscapes. My first lens was the Pana-Leica 15mm...to which I light a candle to each night. My mid range prime is the Sigma 56mm which has exceeded all the on line critiques and raves (and lets not even mention the price dare Sigma to discover their mistake :) Yes, I know that with many of the Panasonic lenses beginning with P or L, there is the built in IBIS which deserves some form of recognition with the Carpal Tunnel Association. But, the Olympus lenses are amazing as well and my next prime will be the 75mm Olympus M.Zuiko F 1.8. Thank you sir for sharing the rest of the story behind the Panasonic/Leica optics!

great short history lesson Mate ! I agree with what you said, the 12-60 leica is one of the lenses I'm going to buy ! i just have to save for it, i've seen great reviews. I currently have the 25mm 1.7 and the 14-45mm 3.5-5.6 (this one i got it super cheap, 60$ US so i couldn't say no) and I'm planing on getting the 45-150mm budget zoom, after that I'll look for the better more Pro oriented ones. just one question ! what do you think would be better for the G9 (video and photo) prime lenses or zooms? i was thinking on getting the Leica 25mm, the 15mm and the 12-60 as my future combo, anyways sorry for the long comment, stay safe and cheers buddy !

Dude don't apologies for commenting! Make them as big as you want!! I love reading them ♥️ definitely the Leica 12-60 is so nice. When it released I had the GH5 and 12-35 but after I used the 12-60 I wanted it so badly! The focal range is so useful 😎 you'll also love the 15mm! My heart wants the 8-18 🤷‍♂️ maybe with the money I get back from that Rode NTG5... Hmm

Maybe I’m a fanboy ( I am), but all of the PL lenses I have used have all been, in different ways, better than the non-Leica badged products. I feel like it’s a thing, and like others on here, is a massive reason I am still with Panasonic as a company (and because I can’t realistically afford actual Leica gear lol ((see, told you, fanboy)))
@CreativeConnor

Hahah that's ok jack! I love people that are passionate about gear! The 12-60 PL lens feels so much nicer than the 12-35mkii (though great lens too) I love the metal barrel zoom rings and focus ring. They are do amazing for focus by wire! I've ordered the 8-18mm PL lens today and it'll arrive in a couple of weeks. I think Leica do have input of design and optics for sure. (But if they didnt) and it was just Panasonic making these lenses to a higher spec to by approved by Leica then holy moly Panasonic are crushing it ♥️

Thanks for the informative video. I’m really considering “downgrading” my A7iii and going back to Panasonic. Looking into the G9 since it is such an amazing deal right now especially used. Looking at the same Leica lenses you mentioned, 12-60 and 100-400. For my needs i may not need any others. What are you opinions between the Leica DG and the Lumix G lenses. Is the Leica brand worth the extra cost?
@CreativeConnor
@CreativeConnor 4 года назад
Hello Workin' 😄 hope you're doing well! Ah it's such a tough decision, I have the Sony A7iii (24mm GM, 55mm Zeiss, 105mm Sigma F1.4) and I've been weighing up selling or staying with it. I think I'll wait for the newer gen before deciding entirely 😬 or might sell the A7iii for the A7RIV. Right now I don't have to sell to buy. I've ordered the 8-18mm PL and with it pretty much completes my lens set 8 - 400mm which is insane with 3 lenses 😂 I love the G9 and I love using it. But I approach it from a very user/shot focused stand point. I know it's not as big a sensor and it lacks the dynamic range as the FF cameras. But it never bothered me, I use it more because it's better to use I enjoy filming and taking photos with it 🤗 I don't cry over a little noise or whatever, I'm always amazed by the shots I do get! Again I can use the Sony if I need to for lowlight/DR (corporate video work) if I really need to! If I could do it all again id have kept my GH5 (sold it for Sony A7iii) and probably get the GH5s & G9 at some stage. The benefits of FF are there but I just prefer using all the panasonic m43 gear 🤗 hindsights a powerful thing! The 12-35ii and 35-100ii are fabulous and I've used and owned them for years. A great combo. This time around I decided to try merge them into one lens with the PL 12-60 and use the difference in money to get the PL 8-18. The PL lenses are so nice. The zoom and focus rings along with metal housing and overall finish are top notch. No wrong choices with whatever you go with though 😎
@overworkin1
@overworkin1 4 года назад
Thanks for the reply. I am not a professional and do not make a living from photography. I started with my first interchangeable lens camera last year and quickly got sucked into upgrading kit!! I very much enjoyed the Panasonic G7 & G85. I do see the pros of FF but can not justify the expense to get really good glass. I can get excellent results, in my non-professional opinion, from the smaller sensor and have excellent (Sony GM level) glass at a fraction of the cost and weight. If I can sell my Sony kit, once the world return to somewhat normal, my first choice will be the G9. Again thanks for your input.

@@overworkin1 If you're not a pro and dont need the 800mm reach of the 100-400, the 100-300 mkII is a very good lens, and a much better bargain. It's the best bang for the buck of any telephoto lens IMO at the current price of $550.

Well of course your right, but have you thought that Leica and Lumix both begin with a L, and they both have precisely 5 letters... scary right. Panasonic really makes batteries 🔋 there I said it... Tesla is so in love with Panasonic, Notice again 5 letters!?! The pattern is so obvious.. Now has anyone noticed that Panasonic used Sony sensors, hell Nikon does too! lens design is hard. very hard. competing technical compromises at every step. every new lens is an evolution. priced to suit a market. having said that, the 9mm f1.7 should not have leica branding (plastic body and no quick MF)
@WhiteWulfe
@WhiteWulfe 4 года назад
The PanaLeica 15mm is definitely on my short-list for lenses. Arguably, it was even harder to give back to the store than the Olympus 17mm f1.2, but as nice as those pros lenses are (and they balance soooo nicely on my G85) that 15mm f1.7 just seems to have a specific charm to it. Oh, that and it's a nice, tiny little quiet guy in the corner, that secretly fights crime. Or something. Kind of lost where I was going with that, but it's definitely a lens I want to buy at some point. As for the other Leica lenses, I've been tempted by the 25mm f1.4 II as it's only slightly larger than the Lumix 25mm f1.7, and also fixes that one issue I have with my Lumix 25mm (aka I'm not a fan of the subdued colours, and almost soft look it has)
@CreativeConnor

If you get the 15mm f1.7 I don't think it will ever leave your camera! It's still on my list right now! I just loved it so much! Funnily I'm not interested in the 25mms atm. The 12-60 Leica Pana covers the range so nicely 😬 but man oh man doesn't that 8-18 sing it's sirens song to me
