They’ve been described as the world’s most persecuted people, unrecognized as citizens and rejected by the country they call home. The systematic campaign of violence that went on for decades have forced tens of thousands of Rohingya to flee their homes in Myanmar’s Rakhine state. Almost one million of them are now living as refugees in Cox Bazaar, Bangladesh to escape the terrifying violence. But the overcrowded camps and poor living conditions have made these makeshift houses vulnerable to fires and disease outbreaks, prompting calls for the refugees to be relocated to an offshore remote and cyclone prone island of Bhasan Char.
Is Bhasan Char a permanent solution to the problem facing the Rohingya? And a year after the military coup in Myanmar, is there any hope left for them to return home? Or are they destined to remain stateless forever?
