This is my first time coming up to Pennsylvania, this trip is to fish a national kayak tournament on the Susquehanna River. I had heard of this river for years, and of all the smallmouth that live here. How hard is it to catch them?

That long gray boat in the background at 4:59 is the Millersburg Ferry, in operation since 1817 and is the last wooden double stern wheel paddle boat operating in the United States. It is also the last operating ferry on the Susquehanna River and is on the National Register of Historic Places. My kids and grandkids always loved that trip across the river and getting ice cream on the other side. Cool to see it here.👍🏼😁

I'm 45 min away from the Susquehanna and I'm restricted to bank fishing . Wee hour cat fishing didn't produce so I threw out the no name brand of whopper plopper and got into some smallie action around daybreak. No meat on the table but not skunked or disappointed either. Plenty of people welcoming you, this one asking you to return and make another video

That river is so amazing. Photos doesn't do it justice. Just a phenomenal fishery. As you could tell big baits and aggressive techniques are key there.

Fished the Susquehanna River in Pa and Md the majority of my life. It’s an amazing fishery! Smallies push baitfish into shoals and transitions the majority of the season. 2.5-3” Slam shady paddle is my go to. A lot of people will use an umbrella rig with 2” on secondary and 3” on primary, pearl color. 3-4’ is ideal but 5-9’ with colder temps. Enjoy your channel and good luck with your tourney!

Beautiful area, John. Several nice smallies, but that 16"er was the looker of the day ! I followed your trip up I-81, I always get a smile when I recognize places you are traveling. I understand that this video is a prelude to the actual tourney, but it leaves us "chompin' at the bit" for the actual grind. LOL ! Hopefully, that will be posted soon ! Been watching your channel for a few months now. Glad to see you made it to PA. I've lived in central PA my entire life. Wade fishing the creeks and rivers of PA has been a passion for me since I was a young boy I am now 67 and wading for me is much more difficult than it used to be. I still get out when I get a chance, but not as often as I would like, so I fish vicariously with you on your channel. Great channel keep up the good work I enjoy your videos immensely.

Always good stuff, Mr Dalton. As pretty as that backdrop is with those PA foothills, I'm still partial to the TN mountains, especially since I lived in your neck of the woods awhile back. A collab with another tuber called Anglers Anchor in his waters would have been cool to see. He's primarily a bank fisher, but does go out on his yak sometimes on video.

Took a break, and caught a break! That was a heavy Smallmouth Bass, right there at the end. Great work! You guessed that Bass's weight at about 3 1/2 pounds. Brother, to me, he looked to be somewhere between 4-5 pounds! At the very least, 4-4 1/2 pounds, is my guess. Have a great evening, and Git-R-Done tomorrow!!!

If you make it up this way again I suggest using a bitsy bug mini jig with a three in senko trailer all green pumpkin it slays smallmouth in the susqy just cast and let it drift down the current and give it a pop every now and then

Great video as always, an unrelated question for you. How far from the campground/marina off I-75 can you run a bass boat up the Hiwassee? Looking to head down from Knoxvegas 2nd week of November and was curious how far I could take a full sized bass boat safely up the Hiwassee versus the Alumacraft? Gonna be a touch cold to kayak the river, so we were debating what boat to take to get up there and see what was hungry.

John, I live right off I81. I saw you travling toward Roanoke Va....before Roanoke you would have seen Radford. You should go there and fish The New River. Research it first. Very dangerous current!

You should have gone farther up river above the ferry dam. That section holds a lot of certified donks. 18-20 inchers. I fish that section almost every weekend.

Crawdads are migrating to the banks to burrow for the winter and the fish know it. Load up a spare reel with a bitsy bug jig with a crawdad trailer!

I’ve fished the Susquehanna in northern PA…fishing is really good number wise but the quality is definitely much better in central and southern PA for some reason..it’s nothing to catch 50+ smallmouth and not have one be over 12 inches up here… have caught quite a few 3-4 pounders and a couple pushing 5 pounds but only in the spring and fall

I fish the central susquehanna from Sunbury dam to Holtwood dam. This section is all catch and release, that is why we have more big fish.

Get off my river! Lol jk good luck big dog. Fish the end of rapids..start of a deep hole... Almost guaranteed to catch a giant. I actually caught a 22 inch 5 lb 3 oz tank off the fly last night. It was epic. Right before dark. It’s juicy water dude..im right at the border of ny/pa. It’s not as big up here but it’s still decent sized.
