Are These the Scariest Bridges to Cross in America?

Torri Forbes suffers from acute gephyrophobia, an intense fear of bridges that causes severe anxiety and even panic attacks. Forbes says a bridge collapsing under her, as happened last week in Pennsylvania, is her worst nightmare. Inside Edition was with Forbes as she crossed the Delaware Memorial Bridge, a dual span suspension bridge that is 2 miles long and 174 feet high, and the Chesapeake Bay Bridge in Maryland, which many think to be one of the scariest bridges in the U.S.

It’s great that she wants to conquer her fears, but it’s probably really not great for other drivers having her have a meltdown behind the wheel. Take small steps. Try with smaller bridges, on times that aren’t so populated, and work your way up. For the safety of everyone.

@@cantthinkofnameyeah7249 I don't think you've driven before, because that's not at all what happens on a freeway. You have people that drive faster and slower than everyone else, regardless of what the speed limit says or if they're in a passing lane, and you have large trucks that you need to maintain a good amount of caution with when they slow down or signal to change lanes, because they have blind slots to the sides and behind. You also need to learn how to look in every direction you need to make sure you're able to shift into different lanes without causing an accident. Driving isn't simple and is different for everyone who gets behind the wheel.

The fact that they went to such great lengths to conquer their fears is kudos to them. I mean the fact she had a panic attack and still drove over the bridge shows how brave she is that was probably not the best decision as her having such a severe panic attack could’ve caused an accident, but beside that point she is incredible for making that effort. And I agree that she should not go over that bridge again not because of the danger of it falling but because if she has a really severe panic attack and passes out she can have an accident on the bridge hopefully in the future her anxiety will be managed the point where she can drive over the bridge without having such severe panic attacks

I used to cross the Chesapeake bay bridge daily for work... sometimes twice back and forth to see friends. It's really not that bad. Only rough when they have two way traffic on the two-lane span... it's like any other road, but in the air and everyone moves fast. My jeep always felt really high compared to the sidewalls. Maybe the only time I wanted a sedan.

I’m terrified of bridges. I live right down the road from the tallest bridge in Georgia and I absolutely hate going over it. It’s just shy of 500ft but it does have an amazing view of the marshes here.

While I am proud of her for facing her fears, it is totally okay to pick I different route. Like if I am nervous about making a left hand turn across 4 lanes, I will take a right, then get into the left turn median lane and turn into some random parking lot, and then turn right again. There isn't anything wrong with doing what you gotta do to be a safe driver

Try driving over the Atchafalaya Basin Bridge in Louisiana. 18 miles long. You better pray you don’t break down or get in an accident because you’re stuck.

I don't have any fear while driving over bridges. My panic sets in when traffic comes to a halt and I'm just sitting there, stuck in the middle of the bridge. My imagination tells me that all the weight of the cars just sitting there with me will collapse the bridge. I know it's silly, but it feels terrible.

Getting rid of those phobias is only done through interactions like this. Basically just man up and face them head on. Then you start to realize there's absolutely nothing to be afraid of. Some people just refuse to take such initiatives and allow these phobias to be used as a crutch for the rest of their lives.

I totally understand why she would fear that. I fear biking over metal grills, manhole covers etc as I'm irrationally afraid of them collapsing under me. That and trucks passing to close and their back corner clipping me .... but that one has happened to me already by a bus. I was biking down a hill with a turn, and as it turned it caught my side, and i was thrown about 4 - 6 metres, into shrubbery that caught me and stopped me falling off a cliff. My bike was MANGLED, and my wire front basket (big enough to hold a basketball) was crushed flat, and my front wheel bent in half. If not for my basket, the police guy thought it would've been my head breaking the fall. I blacked out, and got whopping great bruises, and a mild concussion, but nothing else, miraculously. But not I fear driving behind or near big buses/trucks, and I moved to a city with no hills because the panic at biking down them was debilitating.
